This actress, whose career in film, television, and musical theatre spanned six decades, was born Margaret Yvonne Middleton. By what name is she better known?
Yvonne De Carlo (born Margaret Yvonne Middleton; September 1, 1922 - January 8, 2007) was a Canadian American actress, singer, and dancer whose career in film, television, and musical theatre spanned six decades.
She obtained her breakthrough role in Salome, Where She Danced (1945), produced by Walter Wanger, who described her as "the most beautiful girl in the world." Success followed in films such as Criss Cross (1949) and The Captain's Paradise (1953). Her film career reached its peak when director Cecil B. DeMille cast her as Sephora, the wife ofMoses, her most prominent role, in his biblical epic The Ten Commandments (1956).
After her lead performance in Band of Angels (1957) and supporting role in McLintock! (1963), she played Lily Munster, the wife of Herman Munster, in the CBS sitcom The Munsters (1964-1966).

Arrived in NYC last night just before midnight. So much traffic in the middle of the night! Holy cow!
After breakfast we're going to walk to Prospect Park, among other places, and visit our daughter's workplace in Manhattan.
Flying from Sacramento to Houston we had 1st class seats (my husband as accrued many thousands of upgrade points and likes to use them; I sure don't mind). From Houston to La Guardia he got a bump to first class & I did not, so he gave it to me and said, "Happy Birthday! You deserve this!" The passengers who witnessed his generosity applauded him.
Day 1 of vacation: Excellent.
Carry on, people.

I like to think I got my middle name from Yvonne De Carlo. True story: My mother is in the maternity ward after excreting her THIRD baby girl, which was her last chance to have a boy and thus a MAJOR disappointment. Presented with the birth certificate she decides to go with "Lois" for a first name on account of that's her mother's name (whom she dislikes intensely) as she thought the old bitch might put her namesake in the will (she did not). Hm. Middle name...she turns to the lady in the next bed and asks what name SHE likes. Anonymous Stranger replies, "I've always loved the name Yvonne". And that's how I got named, kids! Best of all, my mother took the time to TELL ME THIS STORY. Thank you Anonymous Stranger, for the cool middle initial! "Y" sums everything up perfectly!
Daniel of The City responded:
Yvonne De Carlo. It was years before I learned she had a career beyond Lily Munster.

Chris Rock is coming back to host the Oscars for a second time.
The show's producers say the prolific comedian-filmmaker will be at the helm for the 88th Academy Awards on Feb. 28 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Producers David Hill and Reginald Hudlin called Rock "the MVP of the entertainment industry."
The 50-year-old entertainer posted a photo of himself with an Oscar statuette on Twitter Wednesday with the caption, "Look who's back."
More than 42 million viewers tuned in when Rock hosted the 77th Academy Awards in 2005, compared to 37 million for this year's show.

In time for "Back to the Future" day, the widow of the automaker whose famous car traveled through time in the 1985 movie and its sequels has settled a lawsuit over the use of his name.
Last year, the widow of automaker John DeLorean sued a Texas company she said has been illegally using the DeLorean name for years. The DMC-12, known simply as "the DeLorean," was driven by Michael J. Fox in the movie and has since gained a cult following.
Sally DeLorean, who lives in New Jersey with her daughter, sued the Texas-based DeLorean Motor Company, claiming it had been illegally using the DeLorean name to sell hats, pens, notebooks, key chains and other items, and illegally licensed the name and images to other companies including Nike, Urban Outfitters and Apple.
The company has never been formally affiliated with the one DeLorean started.
A preliminary settlement was reached in June but hit a speed bump over the summer. Last month, the parties agreed to a settlement that will pay Sally DeLorean an undisclosed sum while allowing the company to retain rights to use the DeLorean Motor Company name, trademarks and logo.
Alphabet Inc's YouTube will launch a $10-a-month subscription option in the United States on Oct. 28 that will allow viewers to watch videos from across the site without interruption from advertisements, the company said on Wednesday.
Starting early next year, the service called YouTube Red will add exclusive shows and movies from top YouTube creators including PewDiePie, Lilly Singh and The Fine Brothers.
"Consumers are embracing paid subscriptions of ad-free content at an incredible pace," Robert Kyncl, YouTube's chief business officer, said at an event at YouTube's production space in Los Angeles.
The effort offers a new source of revenue for YouTube and its video creators. Rival streaming sites such as Vessel and Interactive Corp's Vimeo are luring online stars to their paid offerings, which provide creators a larger cut of revenue than they typically receive from YouTube's ad-supported videos. Facebook also is taking steps to boost video viewership on its site.

Broke Encryption On Trillions Of Secure Connections
NSA
Some Edward Snowden leaks have revealed that the NSA and other intelligence agencies can break encryption barriers for mass surveillance purposes. It has been theorized that a flaw in encryption used by many Internet services lets the spy agency decrypt HTTPS, SSH, and VPN traffic, and a new paper seems to prove that.
Indeed, a massive effort comparable to the attempts of breaking the German Enigma coding machine during the World War II seems to have given the NSA the tools required to break trillions of secure connections.
Researchers Alex Halderman, Nadia Heninger and 12 other coauthors won the best paper at the ACM Conference on Computer and Communications Security for the Imperfect Forward Secrecy: How Diffie-Hellman Fails in Practice research.
The paper describes the way the NSA - and anyone else with access to similar resources - must have been able to decrypt online secure connections and eavesdrop on communication believed to be protected from prying eyes.
According to the researchers, the NSA didn't exactly break encryption per se, instead targeting a human flaw: online services tend to reuse the same 1024-bit prime numbers to encrypt services.
An intruder used a hatchet to destroy computers, plumbing fixtures, phones and medical equipment inside a Planned Parenthood clinic, and police are investigating whether the vandalism is linked to the word "murderer" being spray-painted on the same building earlier this month.
Claremont Police Chief Alexander Scott said his department beefed up patrols around the clinic after the graffiti was found on Oct. 6. During one of those checks early Wednesday, officers discovered the damage and caught a juvenile inside.
"This illegal activity is the second incident in New Hampshire since the recent escalation of attacks against Planned Parenthood," said Jennifer Frizzell, vice president for public policy for Planned Parenthood Northern New England. "These acts have no place in New Hampshire."
There has been a corresponding increase in vandalism and arson at clinics across the country.
Earlier this month, an arsonist threw a container containing flammable liquid through the window of a Planned Parenthood office in Thousand Oaks, California, igniting a small fire. Last month, an arsonist threw a flammable object through the window of a Planned Parenthood clinic in Pullman, Washington, causing extensive damage.

A Polish bishop on Wednesday defrocked a high-ranking Catholic priest fired by a furious Vatican earlier this month after he came out as gay on the eve of a key synod on the family.
Bishop Ryszard Kasyna has decided that Krzystof Charamsa should no longer be able to celebrate mass, administer sacraments like communion and baptism or wear a cassock, according to a statement on the website of their northern Pelplin diocese.
Charamsa had held a senior position working for the Vatican office for protecting Catholic dogma, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.
The 43-year-old priest sparked outrage at the Vatican on October 3 by publicly declaring his homosexuality -- and presenting his Catalan boyfriend Eduardo -- on the eve of a bishops' synod set to touch on the divisive issue of the Catholic Church's relationship to gay believers.
Bishop Kasyna said he was forced to defrock Charamsa for failing to abide by his vow of celibacy following an earlier official warning.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sparked an uproar in Israel on Wednesday for suggesting that a World War II-era Palestinian leader persuaded the Nazis to adopt their Final Solution to exterminate 6 million Jews.
Holocaust experts and survivors slammed Netanyahu's comments as historically inaccurate and serving the interests of Holocaust deniers by lessening the responsibility of Adolf Hitler and the Nazis. Critics also said the statement amounts to incitement against modern-day Palestinians in the midst of a wave of violent unrest and high tensions.
Speaking to a group of Jewish leaders Tuesday, Netanyahu tried to use a historical anecdote to illustrate his claim that Palestinian incitement surrounding Jerusalem's most sensitive holy site goes back decades. He has repeatedly claimed that a wave of Palestinian attacks in recent weeks is the result of decades of hatred, and not connected to Israel's 48-year occupation of lands claimed by the Palestinians, as the Palestinians have claimed.
Netanyahu said the World War II-era grand mufti of Jerusalem, Nazi sympathizer Haj Amin al-Husseini, also instigated Palestinian attacks on Jews over lies that they planned to destroy the Temple Mount, known to Muslims at the Noble Sanctuary.
"Hitler didn't want to exterminate the Jews at the time, he wanted to expel the Jews," Netanyahu told the group. "And Haj Amin al-Husseini went to Hitler and said, 'If you expel them, they'll all come here.' 'So what should I do with them?' he asked. He said, 'Burn them.'"

Oklahoma regulators are cracking down harder on saltwater disposal wells near the vitally important Cushing crude storage hub, where a rash of quakes have stoked concerns its tanks and pipelines may not be designed to handle a major seismic event.
The state's oil and gas regulator late on Monday said all saltwater disposal wells within a 10-mile radius of Cushing could face new limits. It has also basically halted approvals for new disposal wells for the time being and ordered 13 wells to shut in or reduce the amount of water they inject deep into the earth.
Once considered an area of "moderate seismic risk", Oklahoma now experiences as many as two magnitude 3.0 or higher earthquakes a day, up from just two a year in 2008. The uptick has been attributed to the disposal of saltwater, a normal byproduct of oil drilling, into deep wells.
In September, in a bid to curb the frequency of the quakes, the Oklahoma Corporation Commission (OCC), which regulates the state's oil industry, ordered drilling companies to shut or reduce usage at half a dozen saltwater wells near Cushing. Just one month later, a pair of earthquakes registering at 4.4 and 4.5 struck near Cushing, renewing safety concerns among residents and regulators alike.
While the OCC is not currently issuing new permits for disposal wells near Cushing, there are still an estimated 3,500 wells operating in the state. These play an important role servicing the oil and gas industry that has long been key to the economy of the Sooner State.

A pair of devout Jehovah's Witnesses have been ordered by a B.C. provincial court judge not to talk about religion in front of their four-year-old granddaughter.
The couple lost their bid for unsupervised access to the girl because they insisted on taking her to worship at their faith's Kingdom Hall despite the repeated objections of the child's mother.
The girl is identified only as A.W. and the grandparents as A.R. and B.R. in Judge Edna Ritchie's 12-page decision. And for now, they're on a short leash.
In this case, Ritchie found it wasn't fair to place A.W. in a holy war between her mother and grandparents.
"I am concerned that the applicants' demonstrated inability to respect and comply with M.W's decisions on religion will continue to cause conflict," she wrote. "It is not in A.W.'s best interests to be exposed to that conflict."
Later, he was known for lending his rasp to voiceover work in hundreds of cartoons and commercials. He also launched Ingels, Inc., an agency which booked film stars, including John Wayne and Cary Grant, in TV ad campaigns.
Ingels and Jones met at a party at actor Michael Landon's home, after which Ingels pursued her tenaciously, which bothered some of her friends. The pair got married in 1977 and published a 1990 autobiography entitled Shirley & Marty: An Unlikely Love Story.
Jones appeared in such movie musicals as Oklahoma! (1955) and Carousel (1956) and won an Oscar for her role in Elmer Gantry (1960). She was later known for playing the matriarch on the 1970s sitcom The Partridge Family.
Cory Wells, a founding member of the popular 1970s band Three Dog Night and lead singer on such hits as "Never Been to Spain" and "Mama Told Me (Not to Come)," has died at age 74.
Wells experienced acute back pain weeks ago and died suddenly Tuesday in Dunkirk, where he had lived, bandmate Danny Hutton said.
Vocalists Wells, Hutton and Chuck Negron formed Three Dog Night in 1967, lifting the name from Australian slang for especially cold weather. They added a backing band as they became a top group over the following decade, specializing in covers of songs by Randy Newman, Harry Nilsson and Paul Williams, among others.
Dubbed the "kings of oversing" by Village Voice critic Robert Christgau, they patented a fervent, gospel-influenced style on such hits as "One," ''Eli's Coming" and the chart-topping "Joy to the World."
Band members took turns on lead vocals, with Wells' singing featured on "Shambala," ''Never Been to Spain" and the No. 1 hit "Mama Told Me (Not to Come)," Newman's comic tale of an innocent man at a wild party.
Wells, a Polish-American with several polka players among his relatives, was born Emil Lewandowski in Buffalo. He joined the Air Force right out of high school and performed in local groups after returning. He moved to Los Angeles in the mid-1960s and while in the house band for the popular club the Whiskey A-Go-Go he met Hutton, a writer and producer at the time with Hanna-Barbera Records.
Wells and Three Dog Night continued to record and tour, in various incarnations, right up to the present. Wells' death comes seven months after longtime keyboard player Jimmy Greenspoon died of cancer.
Wells is survived by his wife, two daughters and five grandchildren.
