Paul Krugman: Rentiers, Entitlement, and Monetary Policy (New York Times)
This kind of behavior - ever-shifting rationales for an unchanging policy (see: Bush tax cuts, invasion of Iraq, etc.) - is a "tell". It says that something else is really motivating the policy advocacy. So what is going on here? When I read Gross and others, what I think is lurking underneath is a belief that capitalists are entitled to good returns on their capital, even if it's just parked in safe assets.

Andrew Tobias: Notes from MY 45th College Reunion
But excessive inequality - never more grotesque than in slavery - has no place. As increasingly plutocratic as we have become these last few decades, today's Republicans argue that the rich are overburdened; that the estate tax on billionheirs should be lowered from 45% to zero; that the minimum wage should not be raised. If the working poor want to live better, they should take on a third job to supplement the first two or - better - start a successful business (or inherit one as the Koch brothers and the Waltons and the Donald all did).

Mark Morford: Everything worthy of your time (SF Gate)
Wait, is the brutal budget impasse/government shutdown thing already over, and I didn't even get a chance to join in the collective mockery of the one-person clown car that is Ted Cruz?

Trivia Question from Yesterday

Who was born Rosine Bernardt?

      Sarah Bernhardt                                                      Source

Sarah Bernhardt (c. 22/23 October 1844 - 26 March 1923) was a Frenchstage and early film actress, and has been referred to as "the most famous actress the world has ever known." Bernhardt made her fame on the stages of France in the 1870s, at the beginning of the Belle Epoque period, and was soon in demand in Europe and the Americas. She developed a reputation as a serious dramatic actress, earning the nickname "The Divine Sarah."

Bernhardt was born in Paris as Rosine Bernardt, the daughter of Julie Bernardt (1821, Amsterdam - 1876, Paris) and an unknown father.        Source

  PS: No raking today. I decided that the Halloween "Trick or Treaters" will be tramping through the piles of leaves in the street tomorrow night - so I'll have to resume on Friday. As for today, I am making 'ghosts' with Kleenex on Tootsie pops tied with a tiny ribbon round the 'neck' for the many kiddies we get around here. To tell the truth, I love seeing the kids in costumes - so excited to get a piece of candy or two! Bring it on!!

Dale of Diamond Springs, Norcali, responded:
   Rosine Bernhardt was the one and only Sarah Bernhardt (1844 - 1923). The most favourite actress of her generation! Reincarnated as my late sister Valerie. Dramatic is just an understated word for both of them!

Lois Of Oregon said:
   That would be the most famous actress in the world of that time, Sarah Bernhardt, the one legged lady known by her fans as the "Divine Sarah", not to be confused with the Divine Miss Middler, who had no legs at all!

BttbBob   replied:
   "The Divine Sarah" (Bernhardt)... I noted her birthday last week, dontcha know?
~~~~~
  Besides being the most notable actress of the 19th and early 20th century, she was also an accomplished 'courtesan'... which her mother introduced her to at an early age. A Belgian prince and rumored with the future King Edward VII when he was still the Prince of Wales.
~~~~~
  She often slept in a coffin which she claimed helped her understand the tragic roles she was often cast in...
~~~~~
  I think she'd fit right in with the Hollywood of the 21st century...
My Wife Is A Pen Thief
I was inspired to write this article about my wife, the pen thief. I cleared it with her first, to make sure I wasn't sounding harsh in any way. Actually, I find the matter rib-tickling. Not griped at all. -D
My Wife Is A Pen Thief
BY DJ Useo
As an artist I've always loved ink pens. I doodle a lot, and I always keep a large package of pens about. You can get a BIG bag of pens cheap, so I stock up when I see a bargain.
On my desk next to the mac is a wooden vase I keep ?lled with ink pens, sharpies, and various art tools. My house rule is if you take a pen, put it back when you're done. ( and please leave my art tools alone. )
Today I took my perch at the mac, and immediately noticed all the ink pens are gone. ( Again ) I'd already realized they'd been slowly vanishing, but now there's not a one! In addition, my clipboard with art paper on it now has a large phone number written on the top sheet with an expensive multi-colored art pencil. Lmao!
I didn't bother confronting her about the absence of all those pens. I've tried that before! Lol! She blamed it on the cats! Hahahaha! I will admit, those varmints had nabbed about four ink pens I found under their scratching post. All that means is I can't trust anyone in the house with my precious pens! Ro?!
Now that I really apply my memory, I recall it's always been this way for me. As a wee lad, I got a box of 64 crayons only to end up with 6 broken ones after a couple days. ( I suspect my younger brother liked to eat them. ) As an adult, I can expect company to look at those sharpies, say to themselves " Hey! I could really use those!" and walk out with all. Lol!
So, I came up with a solution. I put some fake pens and pencils in the wooden vase. The pencils look real, but they're all rubber, and can't write nothin'! The pens light up when you push a button, but the ink is absent. I hope I get my jollies from these tricks, because I know I won't be getting any pens back.
A small nuisance really, from someone who otherwise is my biggest blessing in life.
I love you, Wifey, now put that pen back! Lol!
Donates Painting
Banksy
Banksy bought a painting of a pastoral scene from a thrift store for $50 and reworked it, adding a Nazi soldier. He then donated it back to the store Tuesday.
As he does with all his works, Banksy posted the image on his website. He titled it "The banality of the banality of evil." He also included a photograph that shows the painting in the thrift shop's front window.
The 23rd Street Housing Works store is auctioning the painting. By Wednesday afternoon, bidding topped $220,000. The auction ends Thursday.
It'll benefit Housing Works' homelessness and AIDS initiatives.
Madame Tussauds
Marilyn Monroe
Marilyn Monroe will be remembered in wax at the Madame Tussauds museum in Washington.
The museum is unveiling its newest wax figure Wednesday. It will be displayed initially at Washington's O Street Museum in The Mansion on O Street.
An exhibit about the late Hollywood star will also include a pin-up calendar and photographs, as well as a shampoo advertisement and lunchbox featuring Monroe.
Monroe died 51 years ago but remains a pop culture phenomenon. She was well known for films that included "Some Like it Hot," ''Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" and "How to Marry a Millionaire." But for younger generations, Monroe remains an icon of style.
Toronto Exhibit
David Cronenberg
Before finding a temporary home in the new film-inspired exhibit "David Cronenberg: Evolution," a select number of the auteur's grotesque, strange and surreal artifacts held a comfortable place of prominence - where else? - in his own house.
The 70-year-old director says that included such bizarre pieces as a maquette of the twin-headed lizard from the futuristic thriller "eXistenZ" and the knee brace that James Spader wore in the fetishistic "Crash."
"To me that was like a beautiful metal sculpture," Cronenberg says of the cold hard frame worn by Spader, whose character is a car crash victim drawn into a kinky, macabre world of sex with other crash survivors.
"(It was) on top of one of my speakers and it looked great. And if you didn't know what it was you'd say: 'That's a great abstract metal sculpture.'"
This week, the piece moves from Cronenberg's living room to TIFF Bell Lightbox, where more than 60 artifacts, designs, and rare and unseen footage trace the director's boldly idiosyncratic career and prescient cinematic themes.
Canadians Believe He's A Hero
Edward Snowden
The vast majority of Canadians support the actions of American whistleblower Edward Snowden, according to a new Angus Reid/Huffington Post survey published on Wednesday.
The poll - conducted in Canada, the United States and in Britain - found that 67 per cent of Canadians surveyed believe the former U.S. intelligence operative is a "hero" for leaking classified information about the National Security Administration's spy activities.
That's the highest support for Snowden out of the three countries: 60 per cent of Brits consider him to be a hero while only 51 per cent of Americans do.
The pollster also asked its respondents whether they thought the occasional infringement on civil liberties justified security and anti-terrorism efforts.
Children Sue Over 'Blurred Lines'
Marvin Gaye
Two of Marvin Gaye's children sued Robin Thicke and his collaborators on the hit song "Blurred Lines" on Wednesday, accusing them of copyright infringement and alleging music company EMI failed to protect their father's legacy.
Nona Marvisa Gaye and Frankie Christian Gaye's suit is the latest salvo in a dispute over Thicke's hit and whether it copies elements of Gaye's song "Got to Give It Up."
Thicke has denied copying Gaye's song for "Blurred Lines," which has the longest streak this year atop the Billboard Hot 100 chart and has sold more than 6 million tracks so far. The suit also accused Thicke of improperly using Gaye's song "After the Dance" in his song "Love After War."
Much of the lawsuit focuses on claims that EMI should have pursued a copyright infringement claim. It also alleges the company's executives used intimidation to try to stop the Gaye family from pursuing a lawsuit.
The suit claims EMI, which is owned by Sony/ATV Music Publishing, has allowed a conflict of interest between the family's rights and the profits it is earning from "Blurred Lines" sales.
Double Salmonella Risk
Imported Spices
The Food and Drug Administration says that almost 7 percent of imported spices over a three-year period were contaminated with salmonella.
In a report released Wednesday, the FDA says testing of imported spices between 2007 and 2010 showed that spices were twice as likely as other inspected foods to be contaminated with the pathogen. More than 80 different types of salmonella were detected.
The agency decided to study the issue as several spice-related outbreaks have caused illnesses around the globe. In 2009 and 2010, black pepper and red pepper from India, Vietnam and China used in salami caused hundreds of illnesses. The FDA says there have been 14 known outbreaks around the world since 1973, causing almost 2,000 illnesses, many of which were in children.
The FDA says that during the three year period, 749 shipments of spice were refused entry into the United States because of salmonella contamination while 238 other shipments were denied because of the presence of what the FDA calls "filth" - insects, excrement, hair or other materials.
Exorcism of 1949
St. Louis
Saint Louis University junior Zach Grummer-Strawn has never seen "The Exorcist," the 1973 horror film considered one of the finest examples of unadulterated cinematic terror. He's only vaguely familiar with the monthlong 1949 demon-purging ritual at his school that inspired William Peter Blatty's novel and later the movie.
But just in time for Halloween, Jesuit scholars have joined a whole new generation of horror buffs in St. Louis to recount the supernatural incident. The university hosted a panel discussion Tuesday on the exorcism, which involved the treatment of an unidentified suburban Washington, D.C., boy. About 500 people crammed into Pius XII Library, with some spilling into the library aisles, leaning against pillars or sitting on desks.
The university scholars and guest speaker Thomas Allen, author of a 1993 account of the events at the school's former Alexian Brothers Hospital, emphasized that definitive proof that the boy known only as "Robbie" was possessed by malevolent spirits is unattainable. Maybe he instead suffered from mental illness or sexual abuse - or fabricated the entire experience.
Some of the non-students in the audience spoke of personal connections to an episode that has enthralled generations of St. Louis residents.
One man described living near the suburban St. Louis home where the 13-year-old boy arrived in the winter of 1949 (his Lutheran mother was a St. Louis native who married a Catholic). Another said she was a distant cousin of Father William Bowdern, who led the exorcism ritual after consulting with the archbishop of St. Louis but remained publicly silent about his experiences - though he did tell Allen it was "the real thing."
Killer Hazard
Yellowstone
A supervolcano blasting Yellowstone National Park to smithereens may capture the imagination, but the region's real risk comes from earthquakes, researchers reported here Sunday (Oct. 27) at the Geological Society of America's annual meeting.
"The pervasive hazard in Yellowstone is earthquakes," said Robert Smith, a seismologist at the University of Utah. "They are the killer events."
Smith and his collaborators analyzed 4,520 earthquakes in and around Yellowstone that struck between 1985 and 2013. Their goal: Create the best picture ever of the magma chamber hidden beneath the park's colorful hot springs and spectacular geysers. A side benefit was a better view of the seismic risk from nearby faults.
One of these faults triggered the most destructive earthquake ever recorded in the Rocky Mountains - the deadly magnitude-7.3 Hebgen Lake quake in 1959. The epicenter was about 15 miles (24 kilometers) north of West Yellowstone.
Smith said the probability of another magnitude-7 or larger earthquake on one of the major faults near Yellowstone is 0.125 percent. The number reflects the chance an earthquake will occur in any given year, based on past records.
New Species Identified
Dolphins
A new species of humpback dolphin has been identified off the northern coast of Australia, researchers have announced.
Humpback dolphins - named for the hump below their dorsal fin - swim within river deltas, estuaries and coastal waters throughout the Indian, Pacific and eastern Atlantic oceans. The charismatic mammals can grow to be 8 feet (2.4 meters) long, and sport different combinations of gray, pink and white colorations.
The animal's wide geographic distribution has caused isolated populations to evolve into distinct species that have adapted to their own local habitat types, researchers say. For years, scientists had known of three different species. But now, an international team of researchers based at the American Museum of Natural History and the Wildlife Conservation Society has determined that a population of dolphins off the northern coast of Australia represents a fourth distinct species.
"We were surprised," study co-author Martin Mendez, a researcher with the Wildlife Conservation Society and the American Museum of Natural History, told LiveScience. "Morphologically, these guys are not all that different from other dolphin species, but we were surprised to see that the genetic data came out quite different."
