Re: Harper's Weekly
10/30 Harper's Weekly is misleading
The quote:
"Senator Paul Wellstone of Minnesota, one of the last liberals in Congress,
died in a plane crash on his way to the funeral of a steelworker. Lobbyists
were giddy at the prospect of a Republican Senate; one anonymous source
remarked that "it's the domestic equivalent of planning for postwar Iraq." "
It's actually two separate items. The article about giddiness appeared in the
washington post before the death of Wellstone.
Not that the dark side didn't think it.

Thanks, Alex, I see your point! 'Harper's Weekly' comes in 3 large paragraphs, and generally I use only the first paragraph. I insert the breaks where they seem appropriate, in an effort
to make it easier to read - guess I was moving too fast last night. That'll teach me!

'COUNTING ON DEMOCRACY'
from tim h
In the face of the controversial decision by the PBS network to refuse to
transmit the investigative report, the nation's top PBS stations will independently
broadcast COUNTING ON DEMOCRACY.
Directed by Emmy-award winner Danny Schechter, the 57-minute
documentary follows BBC television reporter Greg Palast as he discovers how Katherine
Harris removed up to 57,000 legal voters from registries - mostly black - five months before
the 2000 election. While the public broadcast network chiefs refused to schedule
this important report, dozens of local stations are insisting on showing the expose
before the mid-term elections.

Last Night
A beautiful fall day with plenty of sun, and Jo (the remaining lizard) enjoyed his time outside.
This cold is still hanging - has messed with my sense of smell - about the only thing that hasn't changed scents is cat crap.
Bill Simon is really getting on my nerves. What a condescending, patronizing, smirking candidate. Just what nobody needs is another smirker.
The kid will be Trick or Treating as a killer whale. He was parading around the house in the costume tonight - think he would have slept in it if allowed.
Warren Zevon was amazing on Dave.
Tonight, Thursday, CBS opens the night with a fresh 'Survivor: Thailand', then a fresh 'CSI: Crime Scene Investigation', and tops it with a fresh 'Without A Trace'.

Killed in New York
Jason ''Jam Master Jay'' Mizell
DJ Jam Master Jay, a member of the groundbreaking hip-hop group Run-DMC, was shot and killed in a recording studio in the New York borough of Queens on Wednesday, a spokesman for the group said.
DJ Jam Master Jay, whose real name was Jason Mizell, was one of two men gunned down inside the studio at 7:30 p.m. EST, group representative Dave Goodsen said in a statement
posted on Run-DMC's official Web site.
Mizell, along with Run, whose real name is Joseph Simmons, and D.M.C., Darryl McDaniels, was part of the pioneering hip-hop group Run-DMC, credited with being the first rap
artists to cross into mainstream and the first hip-hop group with a platinum album.
According to their official Web site, which is running a banner across the home page saying, "Whose House? Jay's House. Rest in Peace Jam Master," all three men were products of
solid, middle-class families in Hollis, Queens.

Unveiling New Comedy Routine on Letterman Tonight
Jerry Seinfeld
Superstar comedian Jerry Seinfeld plans to try out an all-new routine this Thursday on the CBS "Late Show with David Letterman," his first TV stand-up performance since his
last visit with Letterman in March 2001.
Seinfeld's most recent "Late Show" appearance comes as the former television sitcom star promotes his newly released film "Comedian," a behind-the-scenes look at the stand-up
circuit from his perspective and that of up-and-coming comedy talents.
Seinfeld recently appeared with Letterman's NBC rival, "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," to talk about his movie and the release of his illustrated children's book, "Halloween."
And while he showed a clip from the movie in which he and Leno were seen joking together, Seinfeld did not perform any stand-up on the show.

5,000 Expected In Eugene Today
Bill Clinton
Bill Clinton will be visiting an old haunt when he returns to McArthur Court for a Halloween "get out the vote" rally.
The former president will be the featured guest at Thursday's noon gathering, a fund-raiser for U.S. Senate candidate Bill Bradbury. The visit marks Clinton's second visit
to Oregon this year on behalf of Bradbury, the Democratic secretary of state who is facing an uphill battle against incumbent Republican U.S. Sen. Gordon Smith.
It also marks a reunion of sorts for Clinton, who greeted a boisterous crowd at the University of Oregon basketball arena 10 years ago this month on his way to unseating incumbent George Bush for the presidency.
Thursday's gathering won't match that year's overflow crowd, but organizers and university officials say they expect as many as 5,000 people to show up. "This is more Clinton country than Bush
country - on campus, anyway," UO spokeswoman Gaye Vandermyn said.

Sniper Episode to Air As Scheduled
'CSI: Miami'
A "CSI: Miami" episode about a sniper that CBS had considered postponing will air as planned Nov. 18, the network said Wednesday.
The decision to air the episode came after arrests were made Oct. 24 in the Washington area shooting attacks that left 10 people dead and three others wounded.
The "CSI: Miami" story was conceived in August and the script was delivered weeks before the real-life shooting attacks began, CBS said last week.
The episode features a forensics team studying crime scenes from an attacker who kills people from atop a building. The Monday night drama is a spin-off of CBS' "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation."

Mark Twain Prize
Bob Newhart
Bob Newhart found himself "a long way from being an accountant" Tuesday night as he accepted the Kennedy Center's Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.
Newhart — an ordinary-looking everyman who has always regarded the lunacy around him with unflappable calm — was regaled by fellow comedians Tim Conway, Richard Belzer, Steven Wright
and The Smothers Brothers, among others. The Kennedy Center gala will be broadcast Nov. 13 on PBS.
Newhart, 73, who worked as an accountant in Chicago in between a hitch in the Army and his comedy career, had no regrets about choosing show business. "It's not easy being an accountant
today," he said. "It's taken a lot of heat off the lawyers."
The Mark Twain Prize has been awarded annually since 1998. Other recipients include Richard Pryor, Jonathan Winters, Carl Reiner and Whoopi Goldberg.

Cancelled
'Liza & David'
Liza Minnelli won't become another Ozzy Osbourne.
VH1 has pulled the plug on the singer's planned reality TV show, complaining that her husband, David Gest, was impossible to work with.
Gest would repeatedly cancel production meetings and shooting schedules, and restricted VH1's access to his wife, according to an official at VH1 who spoke on condition of anonymity.
He was also a "neat freak" who ordered a VH1 staff member to stand duty with a portable vacuum cleaner while a hole was drilled in a wall, the source said. The New York
Post said Gest required VH1 crew members to wear surgical booties while in their apartment.
Finally, with only one episode filmed, VH1 backed away entirely.

'girls club'
Fox canceled producer David E. Kelley's new law office drama "girls club" after just two airings because of low ratings.
The drama about three female lawyers in San Francisco debuted last week but finished 82nd out of 131 total rated programs, according to Nielsen Media Research. The Monday night show lost
nearly 1 million viewers this week and gave up more than half the audience that tuned in for Kelley's "Boston Public," which preceded it.
Fox will air a rerun of "Boston Public" next week and specials throughout November to fill the slot.
"Girls club" starred Gretchen Mol, Kathleen Robertson and Sarah Mickle as three Stanford Law graduates who get a job at a corporate law firm. It joins ABC's "That Was Then" as the second
show this fall that didn't make it to its third episode.

Going To Pre-Tape Most Programs
'Connie Chung Tonight'
It's tough trying to figure out what's going on over at "Connie Chung Tonight" these days.
The show's senior executive producer, Bruce Perlmutter, sent a memo around early last week informing staff that the 8 p.m. "Connie Chung Tonight" would henceforth be taped at 3:30 p.m. each day.
This would be a major change for a show that the network and the star have been touting as the place to get the latest information live, as opposed to, say "The O'Reilly Factor"
over on Fox News Channel, which is taped shortly before telecast at 8 p.m.
In his memo, Perlmutter said that if a major story broke right before the show was to go on, that story would be handled out of Atlanta. On the other hand, if a major story
is brewing during the day, the producers may decide to do "Connie Chung" live.
The decision as to whether to go live or use tape on any given day will depend on that day's stories.

The remains of a prehistoric woolly rhino is seen at a gravel pit in Whitemoor Haye, in Staffordshire, central England in this undated handout photo. The remains of four rhinos, discovered by a quarryman, will provide new clues about the Ice Age, scientists said Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002. According to scientists, the group is 'extraordinary' and one of the best Ice Age discoveries of its type in Northern Europe in recent years.

Elton John spared no expense to throw his boyfriend David Furnish a 40th birthday bash at the couple's new Venice palazzo over the weekend. The pop star flew 100 pals in from London,
New York and Paris for a two-day fete, staging one blowout at their historic house La Giocanoda, and another at the Hotel Cipriani. Guests Liz Hurley, Donatella Versace, Victoria Beckham,
Lily Safra, Ingrid Sischy, David LaChapelle, Lynn Wyatt, Hedi Slimane and Sting were all upstaged by bad boy Brit artist Damien Hirst, who had to be subdued after his drunken sing-song toast went awry.

Sues Movie Producers
Joan Jett
Rocker Joan Jett is suing the producers of a would-be movie "Prey for Rock & Roll," saying she hasn't been paid for her work on the film, according to a federal lawsuit filed Wednesday.
The hard rocker of "Bad Reputation," "Do You Wanna Touch Me" and "I Love Rock-n-Roll," said she was paid only $20,000 of the $100,000 she was due for music for the soundtrack
for the film and for a movie appearance she was scheduled to make, according to the suit filed in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.
Film production stopped in May and was revived in July. Producers told Jett that if they paid her the remainder of the $100,000 it would break the movie, the suit said.

Clean Underwear Is Insulting
Tom Jones
In a recent interview, Tom Jones waxes nostalgic at the days when the underwear women would throw at him during his concerts were the ones they were wearing at the time.
Not anymore -- "nowadays, they bring along a plastic bag with their underwear in it," Jones says in the interview. "It has nothing to do with enthusiasm anymore. I actually take it as an insult."

More Than A Tennis Star
Serena Williams
Tennis sensation Serena Williams has gone Hollywood with a guest spot Wednesday night as a kindergarten teacher on ABC's "My Wife and Kids."
"I've never considered tennis as my only outlet," the world's top-ranked player told the Los Angeles Times, adding that she performed as a child in plays written by her sister, Venus.
"I've always liked doing different things when I was younger. I just never really liked focusing on tennis. I do see myself as a crossover."
"I've had lots of (acting) opportunities. It's just that other career that I have — that other small career that's putting a hindrance on my acting," she said with a smile.

Parachutist Missing
Film Shoot Accident
Rescuers on Wednesday searched for a parachutist who disappeared after landing in the Pacific Ocean during the filming of a Bruce Willis action movie.
The parachutist was among nine sky divers who jumped from a plane 14,000 feet above the ocean on Tuesday, all planning to land on a nearby beach.
Two landed in deep water about 300 yards offshore, said Andrew Zilke, chief ranger at Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area. One of the parachutists was rescued.
Rescue efforts were hampered by choppy seas when winds picked up, Zilke said. Winds were light at the time of the jump, although all jumpers landed about a mile south of their target.

a 'military zone' off limits to all citizens and residents the areas between the Abdally Road and Salmi Road, which is almost 1/4 of the entire country. Civilians
including hunters, shepherds and livestock pen workers will be banned from approaching or trespassing into the area starting Nov. 2. Many camps with camels, sheep or

Barry White
The walrus of love is in critical condition. Barry White, whose sultry songs are responsible for more than a few unplanned pregnancies, has been in a Los Angeles hospital for over a month with
kidney failure, sources say. The situation is "not good," and it is not known if White will recover as no donor has been found. White's illness has pushed back the launch of Def Jam Soul. White
was supposed to be the label's top act, along with Patti LaBelle, but he hasn't been available to help promote it. White's manager didn't return calls.

Closes Hollywood Office
Pax TV
Its alliance with 32 percent-owner NBC on the rocks, family-friendly broadcaster Pax TV has shut down its Hollywood production and promotion operation.
About 50 employees at the company's Studio City offices were told Tuesday that they were out of a job if they did not relocate to the headquarters of parent company,
Paxson Communications, in West Palm Beach, Fla.
A spokeswoman for Paxson declined to discuss the number of staffers who might be affected and denied that Jeff Sagansky, president-CEO of Pax TV,
would resign as part of the consolidation.
In addition to Pax TV, Paxson owns and operates 65 TV stations. When NBC bought the stations of Spanish-language broadcaster Telemundo late last year,
Paxson sued NBC claiming that the deal would impede NBC's plan to take over Paxson. It lost an arbitration action against NBC five weeks ago.

Ends Hunger Strike
Hildur Runa Hauksdottir
The mother of pop singer Bjork has ended a hunger strike against a plan to develop the Icelandic highlands.
Hildur Runa Hauksdottir said Tuesday that she began eating again on Sunday evening. She began her fast Oct. 7 to try to persuade Pittsburgh-based Alcoa Inc.
to pull out of the plan to build an aluminum smelter and hydroelectric plant in the wilderness area.
Hauksdottir, 56, said she quit because she was satisfied that her message was having a global impact.
"Americans, Europeans, people in the Far East, have all contacted me asking how they can help, how they can stop this," Hauksdottir said.
"I thank them for their support and I urge them to keep track by reading the campaign Web site. But a lot more work needs to be done — time is running out."

Bows Out As 'Idol' Judge
Angie Martinez
Rapper Angie Martinez discovered she wasn't tough enough to be an "American Idol" judge.
Martinez, who was to join original judges Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson for the Fox talent-search show's second season, quit after the first few auditions.
It became "too uncomfortable for me to tell someone else to give up on their dream, especially when I realized that many of them have supported my musical career," Martinez said in a statement.
Fox will stick with a trio of judges and not fill Martinez's slot, a spokeswoman said Wednesday.

Enigmatic Baseball Icon
Sandy Koufax
So how good was Sandy Koufax, the Hall of Fame pitcher who wrote baseball history in the 1960s with a powerful yet ultimately fragile left arm?
Consider this: Koufax gave up just six earned runs in seven World Series starts while the Anaheim Angels and San Francisco Giants combined for 76 in this year's seven-game Fall Classic.
What would 66-year-old Koufax, a former Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodger, say about this measure of his hardball prowess?
"I don't know. He doesn't like to talk about himself ... but would probably just say it is a different era," said Jane Leavy, who recently wrote a biography with limited cooperation from Koufax, who became
an icon of baseball, American Judaism and a more innocent time in professional sports.
Koufax made it clear, she said, that he did not want her to do the book, "Sandy Koufax: A Lefty's Legacy," now on the New York Times bestseller list. But he said if she was going to proceed, he wanted it done right.
So, Koufax politely agreed to verify biographical data. More importantly, he told friends they could talk to her, provided it was clear the book is "'based on what others said, not on what I'm saying,"' she said.

Dumps Her 'Viagra-Taking Pig'
Heidi Fleiss
Former Hollywood Madam Heidi Fleiss has dumped live-in boyfriend Tom Sizemore for the second and last time, calling him a "Viagra-taking pig."
"Tom may be a hero to fans of the new CBS show 'Robbery Homicide Division,' but to Heidi he is the ultimate scumbag," an insider declared.
Heidi told a friend, "Hookers are calling me and telling me he stiffed them out of money. Another woman told me the sexual favors Tom wanted were gross. He was doing Viagra
all the time. The guy is a Viagra-taking pig."
Several weeks ago, things got really ugly between the couple.
"Tom threatened to put Heidi back in prison if she attempted to leave him," said the source.
"Heidi is on parole and can be sent to prison for failing a drug test. A close friend said Tom threatened to put drugs in her food and then tell her parole officer. Afraid of
what he might do, Heidi confided her fears to her parole officer.
