• Humorist H. Allen Smith once received this letter from two soldiers in Florida: “There is a guy here, a first sergeant who calls himself William Smith, eternally a son of a b*tch beyond belief. This lying b*stard enrages us constantly by claiming that he is your brother. It may not seem important to you, but you ought to do something about it, stop this insufferable jerk from claiming relationship with you.” Unfortunately for the two soldiers, H. Allen Smith couldn’t do anything about the situation — the “insufferable jerk” really was his brother, a highly able soldier.
• In 1969, Judy Blume received a letter from a company that wanted to publish her picture-book The One in the Middle is the Green Kangaroo. Of course, she was extremely happy, so she ran into her young son’s playroom and danced around while tossing his playthings in the air. Ms. Blume’s young son’s playmate ran home and told her mother, “Larry’s mother is crazy.”
• When author Peg Bracken was growing up, she and her brother sometimes raided the cookie jar. Understandably, their mother did not want them to ruin their appetite before supper, so sometimes young Peg and her brother would find this note inside the cookie jar: “KEEP YOUR BIG MITTS OFF!”
Reporters
• When a new reporter began to work in Washington, D.C., seasoned editors used to tell the reporter that a press conference was being held to announce the name of the Unknown Soldier. Of course, no such press conference was ever held, but some of the best and most dogged reporters Washington would ever know spent hours trying to track down the name of the Unknown Soldier before they understood that they were the victims of a practical joke.
• Newspaper editor Horace Greeley believed that the word “news” was plural. One day he telegraphed a reporter, “ARE THERE ANY NEWS?” The reporter telegraphed back, “NO, NOT A SINGLE NEW.”
Television
• The Mary Tyler Moore Show was ground-breaking in its day, but very quickly the much more controversial series All in the Family arrived, and writers for All in the Family felt that The Mary Tyler Moore Show dealt with fluff. Bob Weiskopf, a writer for All in the Family, once told his writing partner, “The Mary Tyler Moore Show got wind of the fact that we’re doing a two-parter on abortion. They’re retaliating: they’re doing a three-parter on mayonnaise.”
• The scripts for The Dick Van Dyke Show were very good — the writers wanted to do their best work for the series. In the five years of the series, only one script was ever rejected. Ten people were at the reading of the script, and after the script had been read, 10 scripts were flung into the air. Series creator Carl Reiner then picked up a script gingerly by a corner and dropped it in a wastebasket.
Travel
• When Helene Hanff went to London, she visited several authors’ homes, including those of Charles Dickens and of John Keats. Valerie Grove then showed her the house belonging to John le Carré, author of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. While they were looking at the outside of the house, Mr. Carré himself came out. Ms. Grove said, “That’s him!” Ms. Hanff was properly impressed and replied, “That was something. They showed me Keats’ house, but they never showed me Keats.”
• In The Innocents Abroad, Mark Twain wrote about visiting the Mosque of Omar and other interesting sites in the Holy Land. He writes, “Just outside the mosque is a miniature temple, which marks the spot where David and Goliath used to sit and judge the people.” In a footnote, Mr. Twain explains, “A pilgrim informs me that it was not David and Goliath, but David and Saul. I stick to my own statement — the guide told me, and he ought to know.”
Released in May 1975, this song recorded by Glen Campbell topped both the country and Hot 100 charts simultaneously that September. What is the title of this tribute to survival?
"Rhinestone Cowboy" is a song written by Larry Weiss and most famously recorded by American country music singer Glen Campbell. When released in 1975, it enjoyed huge popularity with both country and pop audiences.
Several music writers noted that Campbell identified with the subject matter of "Rhinestone Cowboy" – survival and making it, particularly when the chips are down – very strongly. As Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic put it, the song is about a veteran artist "who's aware that he's more than paid his dues during his career ... but is still surviving, and someday, he'll shine just like a rhinestone cowboy."
Released in May 1975, "Rhinestone Cowboy" immediately caught on with both country and pop audiences. The song spent that summer climbing both the Billboard Hot Country Singles and Billboard Hot 100 charts before peaking at No. 1 by season's end – three nonconsecutive weeks on the country chart, two weeks on the Hot 100. Billboard ranked it as the No. 2 for 1975. It also topped the charts in Canada and several other countries.
During the week of September 13 – the week the song returned to No. 1 on the Billboard country chart, after having been nudged out for a week by "Feelins'" by Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn – "Rhinestone Cowboy" topped both the country and Hot 100 charts simultaneously. This was the first time a song had accomplished the feat since November 1961, when "Big Bad John" by Jimmy Dean did so.

Dave responded:
Rhinestone Cowboy. That was my guess and research confirmed it. Johnny Carson dressed up as a rhinestone cowboy for a mocking skit on the TONIGHT SHOW in 1975 and that probably didn’t hurt sales. Before becoming a breakout country music star, Campbell was a member of the legendary The Wrecking Crew group of studio musicians, and was considered a guitarist with few equals, either in rock or country music. Campbell also hosted his own TV show for several years, hosted TV music specials and starred in at least one movie. He had the looks of a movie star but like co-star John Wayne just played himself on screen.

When an Amazon Prime Video user buys content on the platform, what they're really paying for is a limited license for “on-demand viewing over an indefinite period of time” and they're warned of that in the company's terms of use. That's the company's argument for why a lawsuit over hypothetical future deletions of content should be dismissed.
In April, Amanda Caudel sued Amazon for unfair competition and false advertising. She claims the company "secretly reserves the right" to end consumers' access to content purchased through its Prime Video service. She filed her putative class action on behalf of herself and any California residents who purchased video content from the service from April 25, 2016, to present.
On Monday, Amazon filed a motion to dismiss her complaint arguing that she lacks standing to sue because she hasn't been injured — and noting that she's purchased 13 titles on Prime since filing her complaint.
Further, Amazon argues, the site's required user agreements explain that some content may later become unavailable.
The late Whitney Houston has earned her third diamond-certified album, becoming the first Black artist to achieve the feat.
The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and Legacy Recordings announced Wednesday that Houston’s 1987 sophomore album, “Whitney,” has reached diamond status, which is equivalent to selling 10 million albums. Her self-titled 1985 debut album and 1992's “The Bodyguard” soundtrack were already diamond successes, selling 13 million and 18 million units, respectively.
“Whitney” featured four songs that topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart: the Grammy-winning “I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me),” “Didn’t We Almost Have It All,” “So Emotional” and “Where Do Broken Hearts Go.” The single “Love Will Save the Day” peaked at No. 9 on the chart.
Garth Brooks holds the record for most diamond-certified albums, with nine. Others with three or more albums that have reached diamond status include The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Shania Twain and the Eagles.
The RIAA awards diamond plaques to albums and singles that reach 10 times platinum status. That once was the equivalent of selling 10 million songs or albums, but has changed since 2016, when the RIAA began incorporating streaming from YouTube, Spotify and other digital music services.
With just six days to go in a tight Los Angeles County District Attorney’s race, incumbent Jackie Lacey’s office just unveiled seven new sexual assault charges against Ron Jeremy.
Involving five women and a 17-year-old girl, the new charges and previous claims could see 67-year-old porn star facing 330 years in state prison if found guilty. The rape and other sex crimes revealed today range from 1996 in the San Fernando Valley to 2013 in a West Hollywood bar.
What is equally chilling is that 14 other cases were denied by the L.A. D.A.’s office “because they were outside the statute of limitations.” All of the six cases allowed in today’s charges were from 2000 to 2013, except the 1996 incident, which involved a minor.
First arrested back in June, Jeremy now is looking at a total of 11 counts of forcible rape, eight counts of sexual battery by restraint, six counts of forcible oral copulation, five counts of forcible penetration by a foreign object and much more. Having pleaded not guilty to the first set of charges this summer and unable to come up with the $6.6 million in bail, Jeremy remains in jail.
Jeremy entered a not guilty plea today to the latest allegations. His next court appearance on the new charges has been scheduled for December 14 in a preliminary hearing.
The original Studio City location for Jerry’s Famous Deli has announced it will close on Friday.
The New York-style deli, located at 21853 Ventura Blvd., opened in 1973 as an outpost of Solley’s Delicatessen. It was purchased in 1996 by Jerry’s Famous Deli Inc., based in Studio City. The location, adjacent to a bowling alley, was the scene of many celebrity sightings and was patronized by Adam Sandler, Will Smith and the Seinfeld cast, among others.
Comedian Andy Kaufman used to bus tables at the restaurant at the height of his fame on the television show Taxi. Kaufman would stay in character as a humble busboy, always denying that he was Kaufman.
The Jerry’s in Studio City joins the fallen other locations in the chain. Within the last year, Jerry’s closed closed locations in Woodland Hills, Marina del Rey and West Hollywood, as well as one in Miami Beach.
A die-hard Trump supporter and his wife, who despises the U.S. president, are united in a rare mission.
For years, John and Laura Hunter have set up water stations for people illegally crossing the U.S.-Mexico border, saving them from fatal heat in the Anza-Borrego desert in California.
John, 65, is a Republican who founded the nonprofit group Water Stations 21 years ago when a record number of migrants were dying of dehydration and heat exhaustion.
"I was born here. I was lucky to be born here in the States where we had great freedom, great opportunities," said the physicist. "But the guys down south from here don't have the same opportunities just because their system is different. So, if I was one of them, I'd be coming north, too."
His wife Laura, born in Mexico, joined Water Station as a volunteer and they tied the knot years later.
The loss of billions of tonnes of ice from Earth's frozen spaces is likely to increase global temperatures by an additional 0.4 degrees Celsius, according to research Tuesday highlighting the danger of a "vicious circle" of warming.
Arctic summer sea ice levels have declined by more than 10 percent each decade since the late 1970s and mountain glaciers have shed roughly 250 billion tonnes of ice annually over the last century.
Ice loss from the West Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets is accelerating and already outstripping what scientists until recently believed to be the worst-case melt scenarios.
Decades of studies have sought to quantify how Earth's melting ice will contribute to sea level rise - Antarctica and Greenland alone contain enough frozen water to boost oceans' height by around 60 metres (nearly 200 feet).
Scientists at Germany's Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) used a climate model that includes components on atmosphere, ocean, sea- and land-ice data to predict temperature change from ice loss under a variety of emissions scenarios.
When Captain Will Whatley guides a ship through Arctic waters, he is starkly aware of what can go wrong.
Double the manpower is needed to navigate. Lookout shifts are kept to just one hour, so sailors don't lose concentration and miss a mass of floating ice. Big icebergs show up on radar, but smaller, truck-sized "bergy bits" - even more dangerous - can be missed, the captain says.
The cold can freeze equipment and the earth's magnetic field disrupts compasses. If anything goes wrong, "you are so far away from help," said Whatley, 31, who sails through Arctic and Antarctic waters for the British Antarctic Survey.
As climate change opens new sea routes, experienced polar captains like Whatley are coveted for Arctic voyages that can save money on the run between Europe and Asia. But as activity in the Arctic's waters picks up, insurance companies are grappling with a fundamental question: If something goes wrong, who pays?
So far, it's unclear that the cost of a major accident would be completely covered by insurance. Damages from a ship spilling oil, hitting an iceberg or becoming marooned can run into the hundreds of millions of dollars.
Feeling under the weather? Chances are you or your doctor will grab a thermometer, take your temperature and hope for the familiar 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit (37 degrees Celsius) everyone recognizes as “normal.”
But what is normal and why does it matter? Despite the fixation on 98.6 F, clinicians recognize that there is no single universal “normal” body temperature for everyone at all times. Throughout the day, your body temperature can vary by as much as 1 F, at its lowest in the early morning and highest in the late afternoon. It changes when you are sick, goes up during and after exercise, varies across the menstrual cycle and varies between individuals. It also tends to decline with age.
In other words, body temperature is an indicator of what’s going on within your body, like a metabolic thermostat.
An intriguing study from earlier this year found that normal body temperature is about 97.5 F in Americans – at least those in Palo Alto, California, where the researchers took hundreds of thousands of temperature readings. That meant that in the U.S., normal body temperature has been dropping over the past 150 years. People run cooler today than they did two centuries ago.
The 98.6 F standard for “normal body temperature” was first established by the German physician Carl Wunderlich in 1867 after studying 25,000 people in Leipzig. But anecdotally, lower body temperatures in healthy adults have been widely reported. And a study in 2017 among 35,000 adults in the U.K. observed a lower average body temperature of 97.9 F.
