Daniel Streltschenko: "Rapper and Mystic: Two Sides of Charles Bukowski" (PopMatters)
… Charles Bukowski was the first author I became obsessed with. It was the combination of simplicity and readability, that rare thing in a writer's trick bag where truths and feelings are stated in such a way that you feel as if you've found a friend, someone else who experiences the world the same way you do, humour and the fact that his books were fantastically entertaining.

There will no doubt be many discussions of Kael's work and influence and with the publication of Brian Kellow's new biography 'Pauline Kael: A Life in the Dark,' and the Library of America's forthcoming collection of her work.

What director told Billy Bob Thornton that he was too ugly to be an actor and he should write a screenplay for himself in which he could exploit his less than perfect features?
William Claude Dukenfield (January 29, 1880[1] - December 25, 1946), better known as W. C. Fields, was an American comedian, actor, juggler and writer. Fields was known for his comic persona as a misanthropic and hard-drinking egotist who remained a sympathetic character despite his snarling contempt for dogs, children and women.
On movie sets, Fields kept handy a vacuum flask of mixed martinis, which he referred to as his "pineapple juice". While filming Tales of Manhattan, a prankster switched the contents of the flask, filling it with actual pineapple juice. Upon discovering the prank, Fields was heard to yell, "Who put pineapple juice in my pineapple juice?!"

Dale of Diamond Springs, CA replied:
Though he is better known these days for his movie performances, in his youth W. C. Fields was the most successful comedy juggler of his generation. He was born William Claude Dukenfield on April 9th 1879, and again on January 29th 1880 (according to other sources). He claims to have first worked professionally as a juggler at the age of 15, in Pottsville, PA, and elsewhere at the age of 11 in Norristown, PA.
Be that as it may, it is clear that by 1899 he was working at Fortesque's Pier in Atlantic City, NJ. Among his other duties was building a crowd by pretending to drown in the ocean and being rescued by one of the other performers. It was here that he met his future wife, Hattie, who assisted him in his act until the birth of their son in 1904.
Fields was billed as 'The Eccentric Juggler'. On stage he dressed as a tramp, with a fake beard and exaggerated eye makeup, while Hattie wore a tuxedo with tight satin pants. He did not speak during his act, but did a lot of physical and character comedy. He might drop deliberately and blame it on his assistant, or fake behind the back throws by juggling two in one hand and waving a third ball behind his back with the other hand.
He worked with balls, cigar boxes, hats and a cane. Later he developed an elaborate routine using a gimmicked pool table, in which he would bounce balls from the table to a hip pocket via bounces on various parts of his body. However, it is in the field of comedy that he made his greatest contribution to the art of juggling, making character more important than tricks (though his tricks were not easy), and turning his juggling act into a true performance.
I've seen most of his movies many times & there are also great silent shorts of his juggling act.

Called Fox News 'A Destructive Force In Our Society'
Steve Jobs
Steve Jobs reportedly told Rupert Murdoch that Fox News "has become a destructive force in our society," according to Walter Isaacson's new biography of the Apple co-founder.
In the book, Issacson recounts how Jobs took Murdoch to task during a News Corp. management retreat in 2010. Jobs was the featured speaker, and in return, he asked Murdoch to listen to his thoughts on Fox News. "'You're blowing it with Fox News," Jobs told him over dinner. 'The axis today is not liberal and conservative, the axis is conservative-destructive, and you've cast your lot with the destructive people.'"
Jobs told Isaacson that he thought Murdoch did not really like how far Fox had gone. However, Murdoch later said he was used to the complaints about the news channel. "'[Jobs has] got sort of a left wing view on this," he said.
Jobs requested Murdoch get a reel of Sean Hannity and Glenn Beck's shows to watch, which Murdoch agreed to. Hannity is still on Fox News, but Beck left the network in June of 2011. Fox News chief Roger Ailes has since said the network was on a "course correction" away from the far right.

A Bruce Springsteen exhibit including guitars, handwritten lyrics, and a 1960 Corvette will open at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia this winter.
"From Asbury Park to the Promised Land: The Life and Music of Bruce Springsteen" will open at the national museum sometime after closing in February at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. The exact dates have not yet been posted.
Constitution Center officials say the Philadelphia showing is the only scheduled stop for the exhibit.
The collection has been at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame since April 2009. Springsteen contributed many of his own items to the exhibit, including the Chevrolet Corvette he bought after the success of "Born to Run."
The Steve Jobs biography has debuted at the top of the charts, and you can expect it to stay there for a long time.
Though official book sales figures from Nielsen will not be released for more than a week, "Steve Jobs" is already No. 1 on the Kindle bestseller list, the Nook bestseller list and the Apple iBookstore chart.
The authorized biography, written by Walter Isaacson, appeared in book stores yesterday, and the print and versions is already No. 1 on Amazon.com.
Industry analysts expect it to stay there for some time, and Amazon spokesperson Brittany Turner already told Reuters it could be the top-selling book of the year.

Rare original drawings of the Smurfs, blue-skinned cartoon characters created by Belgian artist Peyo, are set to fetch up to 120,000 euros ($167,000) each on Saturday in the first auction of the late artist's work.
The highlight of a sale of 33 full-page Peyo comic strips at the Artcurial auction house on the Champs-Elysees in Paris will be a black-and-white sketch -- "The Smurfs and the Magic Flute."
It is the first time Peyo's family has sold original Smurf artwork, although some drawings given as gifts has been sold, and the sale is drawing interest from enthusiasts worldwide.
The Magic Flute drawing was the basis for the cover of Peyo's 1960 "Johan and Peewit" comic, a precursor of the Smurf series in which the diminutive figures, who sport white pants and pointy hats, first appeared before becoming stars in their own right.
Smurfs -- or "Schtroumpfs," as they are called in French -- went on to achieve worldwide fame, appearing in widely syndicated television cartoons, advertising spots and movies.
Did Arianna Huffington and Ken Lerer steal the idea for the Huffington Post?
Though Huffington has deemed the allegation "ridiculous," a judge thinks that a lawsuit making that claim is serious enough to go to trial, per a ruling in a New York court Wednesday.
Peter Daou and James Boyce, two former political advisers, filed suit against the HuffPost co-founders last November claiming that they took their idea for a liberal-leaning news site. Since then, Huffington and Lerer have tried to have the case thrown out, but to no avail.
The judge ruled Wednesday that the case would go to trial.

Protesters in William Shakespeare's home county were on Tuesday to temporarily remove the writer's name from street signs in support of a campaign against a new film which suggests the Bard was "a fraud".
Shakespeare Birthplace Trust was to tape over nine road signs bearing the writer's name in Warwickshire, central England, in protest at "Anonymous", a new movie which alleges Shakespeare was a "barely literate frontman for the Earl of Oxford".
The charity, which promotes the study of the writer, derided the film as an attempt to "rewrite English culture and history".
Along with the roadsigns, the trust was also to cover up the Gower Memorial statue in Stratford-upon-Avon, Shakespeare's home town, with a sheet and 10 pub signs bearing the writer's name.

An extensive collection of Batman memorabilia once owned by a slain Florida millionaire will be auctioned next month.
Heritage Auctions said Wednesday it expects the sale of Ben Novack Jr.'s collection to generate more than $1 million. It will be held Nov. 15-17 in Beverly Hills, Calif.
The items include a copy of DC Comics' first Batman edition from 1940 and a 1939 comic in which "The Batman" first appeared. Novack's replica Batmobile is not part of the auction.
Novack was slain in 2009 at a hotel in upstate New York. His wife, Narcy Novack, and her brother have pleaded not guilty to murder charges.

Two Picasso paintings owned by a German museum and stolen from a Swiss exhibition have been found in Belgrade, Serbia's interior minister said Wednesday.
I
vica Dacic provided no information on the exact location of the paintings or possible suspects in the theft.
The works - "Tete de Cheval" ("Head of Horse") from 1962 and "Verre et Pichet" ("Glass and Pitcher") from 1944 - were stolen from an exhibition in the small Swiss town of Pfaeffikon, near Zurich, in February 2008. They belong to the Sprengel Museum in Hannover, Germany.
Police director Milorad Veljovic said authorities are still investigating who and when brought the paintings to Serbia and where they were hidden before discovery.
Rembrandt's "Night Watch" may need a different nickname after the painting was put under new lighting on Wednesday that makes it look like a day scene.
The change at the national Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam is startling, as characters once barely visible or relegated to the background now stand out in vivid color.
The 1642 painting was commissioned for one of Amsterdam's citizen militias and is officially titled "The Company of Frans Banning Cocq and Willem van Ruytenburch," the two most prominent and central of 34 figures depicted on the large canvas.
Museum director Wim Pijbes said Wednesday the painting - widely considered Rembrandt's greatest masterpiece for its composition, dynamic motion, and use of light, color and shadow - may in fact only have acquired the "Night Watch" title because of a dark varnish that was removed decades ago.

Marine archeologists say that the ancient wreckage of a ship discovered in the seabed off the coast of Nagasaki, Japan, belongs to the ancient "lost fleet" of ships belonging to China's 13th century Mongol ruler Kublai Khan, CNN reports.
Explorers found the 20-meter-long shipwreck by using ultra-sound equipment some 25 meters off the coast of Nagasaki. The team of researchers buried the ultra-sound sensors about a meter deep in the sandy earth beneath the sea. Archeologists believe the ship dates back to 1281, and was part of a 4,400-vessel fleet that China's Mongol rulers during the Yuan Dynasty had employed as an invasion force.
The discovery of the ship's well preserved and mostly intact 12-meter-long keel "could go a long way to helping researchers identify all the characteristics of the 20-meter warship," CNN reported, citing the head of the research team that made the discovery.
According to Japanese legend, two typhoons--known as the Kamikaze--that occurred seven years apart in the 13th century twice saved Japan from Mongol invasion by "destroy[ing] two separate Mongol invasions fleets so large they were not eclipsed until the D-Day landings of World War II," CNN reported. China was not so spared, however, and was ruled by the Mongol Yuan Dynasty from 1271-1368.

A computer scientist at the University of Southern California and two Swedish linguists have cracked a 75,000-character cipher from the 18th century that described the laws of a secret society.
The "Copiale Cipher" was neatly hand-written in Greek and Roman characters with some unknown symbols thrown into the mix. Researchers suspected that the original language was German, since the manuscript was found in Berlin, but they tried to match the manuscript with dozens of languages by running different "computer attacks" on the code, all to no avail.
As they explain in their paper , the researchers' first theory was that the Roman letters contained the true message, with all the other characters serving as distractions, or "nulls." It turned out their hypothesis was completely wrong. After running the cipher through the computer program, the researchers realized that their assumption was backwards--that the Roman characters were, in fact, the nulls.
Even after the code-breakers found and translated most of the unknown characters into letters, a handful of symbols remained mysterious. The researchers believe that these symbols stand for top-secret people in the society.
The manuscript described how to initiate new members into the society and other rules.
