Mark Morford: Frightened Men Love Mitt Romney (SF Gate)
These are the facts you don't want to know. This is the hard data that can make you cringe, that can despoil the soul and make you wonder at the sad state of the modern world, and gender politics, and the tragically deceived hearts of (ahem) men.
Froma Harrop: From Poor to Cool in 500 Square Feet (Creators Syndicate)
Dubach, La., was named "Dogtrot Capital of the World," and how cool is that? Very cool in the "small house" obsession embraced by urban hipsters. A dogtrot house is typically a modest home in which the cooking and living sections are divided by a breezeway (the dogtrot). Another Southern invention is the "shotgun house," a narrow rectangle whose handful of rooms line in a row. Elvis was born in one.
Reverend Phil Snider: "About the Springfield City Council Speech" (WordPress)
A lot of people ask, "How can a pastor who values the Bible take this kind of stance?" Truth be told, there are a bunch of pastors and people of faith across the country who are open and affirming - not in spite of their faith, but precisely because of it. And the number of open and affirming people of faith is rapidly increasing. Brian McLaren offers the following perspective, which deeply resonates with my experiences as a pastor:…
Yelp Strikes Back (Neatorama)
Watch out you sneaky Yelpers, the website is now out to get you. Apparently people have been using Yelp to make a quick buck. Users will rise to the rank of "elite reviewer" then people will pay them to review their place, restaurant, or what have you. Now the website is striking back. Yelp is placing fake Craigslist ads that promise good reviews for money. Any business caught trying to buy reviews is publicly shamed for 90 days with a warning that informs users of their dastardly deeds.

Ernst Stavro Blofeld is a fictional character and a supervillain from the James Bond series of novels and films, who was created by Ian Fleming and Kevin McClory. An evil genius with aspirations of world domination, he is the archenemy of the British Secret Service agent James Bond. Blofeld is head of the global criminal organisation SPECTRE and is commonly referred to as Number 1, an official numerical position given to members of SPECTRE.
He was played on screen by Donald Pleasence, Telly Savalas, Charles Gray and Max von Sydow, among others. It was initially a convention of the films not to show Blofeld's face, only a closeup of him stroking his white blue-eyed Turkish Angora.
Many of Blofeld's characteristics have become clichés of supervillains in popular fiction, representing the stock character of the evil genius. In many versions, even the stroking of his white cat has been retained as a parodic allusion to Blofeld's character, as seen in the Austin Powers film series with the character of Dr. Evil and his cat Mr. Bigglesworth.

PS: I heard the 'other' debate amongst the 4 '3rd party' candidates last night on, "Voice of Russia" radio. It was a pleasure to hear. Larry King, moderator, was GREAT, and IMHO, he should have hosted the Obama/Romney debates. He takes no crap, interruptions, etc. He sticks to the allotted times, and doesn't interject with his opinions.
While I didn't agree with everything the candidates said, I had no problem listening to them - and I did agree with more than I disagreed. They made their comments to the audience, not to one another. No, "my friend," or "President Obama says..." They did not refer to the other candidates at all, just their own stands on various questions! I was not tempted too hurl my brick even once, LOL!

Elizabeth Taylor surpassed Michael Jackson as the highest-earning dead celebrity in the past year, with her estate pulling in $210 million, much of it from the auction of her jewels, costumes and artwork, Forbes said on Wednesday.
Jackson, who died in 2009, dropped into second place with earnings of $145 million, followed by Elvis Presley with $55 million.
Although Taylor bumped Jackson from the top spot, Forbes said the pop star is likely to regain it next year due to steady revenues from music sales and other ventures.
Cartoonist Charles Schulz, who created the Peanuts comic strip, came in at No. 4 with earnings of $37 million, followed by reggae star Bob Marley with $17 million.

A new survey says there's a generation gap among e-book fans.
Readers under 30 prefer cellphones and computers. Those over 30 like dedicated devices such as the Kindle.
The Pew Research Center's latest study focuses on young readers. Among e-book users surveyed, between ages 16-29, more than half read one on a desktop or laptop and around 40 percent use a cellphone. Around 25 percent used an e-reader. Among respondents 30 and older, 46 percent preferred e-readers, just 25 percent cellphones.
According to the report released Tuesday, teen readers were less likely to read an e-book than those immediately older. Around 12 percent of respondents aged 16-17 read an e-book over the past year, compared to 21 percent for ages 18-24 and 25 percent for ages 30-39.
During Monday's presidential debate, conservative pundit and paid provocateur Ann Coulter said she supported Mitt Romney's strategy to not attack President Barack Obama. Or, as Coulter put it on Twitter, "I highly approve of Romney's decision to be kind and gentle to the retard."
On Tuesday, John Franklin Stephens, a Special Olympics athlete, published an open letter to Coulter, asking her why she continually uses the "R-word."
"I'm a 30 year old man with Down syndrome who has struggled with the public's perception that an intellectual disability means that I am dumb and shallow," Stephens wrote. "I am not either of those things, but I do process information more slowly than the rest of you. In fact it has taken me all day to figure out how to respond to your use of the R-word last night."
And if you're waiting for Coulter to apologize for her R-word tweet, don't hold your breath. On Tuesday, Coulter criticized a line in President Obama's stump speech, tweeting: "'Stage 3 Romneysia'-because cancer references are HILARIOUS. If he's 'the smartest guy in the room' it must be one retarded room."
In line with the 50th anniversary of the James Bond franchise, posters from every Bond movie in the series are hitting the auction block in December, along with stills, lobby cards, scripts and other 007 ephemera.
Auctioneer Profiles in History said the Bond poster collection is expected to take in well over $200,000, led by a rare "From Russia With Love" special advance Leicester Square world-premiere poster from 1963.
It is one of a handful believed still in existence and is expected to fetch $10,000 to $15,000, the auction house said.
Other highlights include posters from the earliest Bond films, including a rare U.K. advance "Goldfinger" from 1964 and a British "Thunderball" poster from 1965, each estimated to sell for $4,000 to $6,000.
The Florida-based editor of a Mormon-themed website has left the church rather than face disciplinary action and possible excommunication over writings that he said prompted accusations of apostasy.
David Twede's posts on MormonThink.com offer his account of the history of the church's political involvement, criticism of fellow Mormon and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, and the author's take on Mormon beliefs about the nature of God and temple ceremonies.
Twede, a 47-year-old fifth-generation Mormon and MormonThink's managing editor, has said church leaders described his recent posts as anti-Mormon. A disciplinary hearing had been set for September 30, but was later delayed without explanation.
"I wish to assure you that I am not leaving the church because of some personal slight or insult or because I have 'sinned' or can't 'keep the commandments,'" Twede wrote in the letter, which is posted on his blog.
"I have simply come to the very sad realization that the church is not what it claims to be, that its doctrine is false and that the LDS church (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) is not where I wish to be."

An attorney for Tom Cruise (R-Homunculus) said he filed a $50 million defamation lawsuit Wednesday against the publishers of Life & Style magazine for articles that said the actor has abandoned his 6-year-old daughter, Suri.
Cruise's attorney, Bert Fields said to falsely claim the actor deserted his daughter is a "vicious lie."
The lawsuit was filed in a Los Angeles federal court.
"These serial defamers are foreign-owned companies with their global headquarters in Hamburg," Fields said. "They take money from unsuspecting Americans by selling their malicious garbage. Having to pay a libel judgment may slow them down."
Bobby Brown has been arrested on suspicion of drunken driving for the second time this year.
Los Angeles police spokeswoman Venus Hall says the singer's car was stopped in the Topanga area at around 1 a.m. Wednesday.
Police say he was booked on suspicion of driving under the influence at the Van Nuys jail but was later released.
The 43-year-old pleaded no contest to DUI earlier this year following a March arrest in Los Angeles. Under a plea agreement, Brown checked himself into a rehabilitation center in August.

The child abuse scandal that has enveloped one of Britain's most respected news organizations is now hitting one of America's, as the incoming president of The New York Times is on the defensive about his final days as head of the BBC.
Mark Thompson was in charge of the BBC in late 2011 when the broadcaster shelved what would have been a bombshell investigation alleging that the late Jimmy Savile, one of its biggest stars, was a serial sex offender.
The BBC scandal has horrified Britain with revelations that Savile, a popular children's television presenter, cajoled and coerced vulnerable teens into having sex with him in his car, in his camper van, and even in dingy dressing rooms on BBC premises. He is also alleged to have sexually assaulted disabled children at hospitals that he helped by raising charity funds.
Police say there could be more than 200 victims, leading one child protection charity to say that Savile could rank among Britain's most prolific child sex predators.
Thompson, 55, was the BBC director-general from 2004 until last month.
Former Broadway theater mogul Garth Drabinsky has been granted day parole and will be released to a Toronto halfway house to serve the remainder of his sentence for fraud, a parole board ruled Wednesday.
The Parole Board of Canada's two-member panel said Drabinsky, the high-profile producer of "Ragtime" and other Broadway hits, does not pose an undue risk to public safety, but denied his application for full release, calling it premature.
The ex-CEO of the now-defunct Livent Inc. testified for nearly three hours via video link from the minimum-security Beaver Creek Institution in Gravenhurst, Ontario.
Drabinsky, 62, could be seen crying and hugging his family following the decision. He is prohibited from operating a business and associating with co-accused Myron Gottlieb.
Livent was once the largest live theater company in North America. It once owned or controlled theaters in New York, Chicago, Toronto and Vancouver and its Broadway productions have won 14 Tony Awards and have been nominated for dozens more.

A producing team has won the theatrical stage rights to "Rear Window," the noir tale that Alfred Hitchcock made into a classic film.
Producer Charlie Lyons, director Jay Russell and actor Tim Guinee announced Wednesday that their two-year hunt for the rights have been successful and they're hoping to mount the show on Broadway.
"Rear Window" is based on a Cornell Woolrich short story, "It Had to Be Murder," that was first published in February 1942 in Dime Detective Magazine.
Literary agent Sheldon Abend in 1971 purchased a copyright to the short story on which "Rear Window" was based. The new producing team bought the first stage option ever granted by Abend's trust.
Earth's magnetic field reversed extremely rapidly soon after modern humans first arrived in Europe, completely flip-flopping in less than a thousand years, new research suggests.
These findings, detailed Oct. 15 in the journal Earth and Planetary Science Letters, could shed light on how and why magnetic field reversals happen, and how they leave Earth vulnerable to solar and space radiation, the study scientists said.
Earth's metal core acts like a giant magnet that emanates a magnetic field with two poles, north and south. These two magnetic poles very roughly match where the planet's geographic north and south poles lie, which mark the axis on which Earth spins.
In addition, every several hundred thousand years, Earth's magnetic field reverses - a compass that would have pointed north would instead aim south. These flips are captured by magnetically sensitive minerals in cooling lava that are literally set in stone pointing to where the poles were at that particular moment in Earth's history.
Full reversals of the magnetic field usually take millennia to finish, based on those frozen rock records. However, scientists now find that 41,000 years ago, shortly after modern humans first entered Europe, the magnetic poles flipped and flipped again in less than a millennium.
