• Authors are often asked who has most influenced their career. For Newbery Medal-winning children’s book author Lois Lowry, that person was a Czechoslovakian woman named Maria who took care of the children while Ms. Lowry wrote. (Before she hired a housekeeper, a well-traveled path existed between Ms. Lowry’s washing machine and her typewriter.)
Language
• Journalist and author Andrew Mueller takes spelling, punctuation, and grammar seriously. He once discovered that a possible romantic companion did not know — or care — about the difference between your and you’re. She ceased to be a possible romantic companion for him. He once shouted an obscenity at people whose stall had a sign for toiletrie’s. And he routinely went four blocks out of his way to purchase groceries because the store across the street had a sign for tomatoe’s. All of us can applaud Mr. Mueller’s campaign for correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar. (Oh, wait. He’s a Brit — his book I Wouldn’t Start From Here: The 21st Century and Where It All Went Wrong is published in Britain — who wants Americans to use the spelling neighbours. In the opinion of this American writer, that makes him a radical who has gone too far.)
• African-American comedian Dick Gregory’s first memoir was titled Nigger, and it was written with the help of a man named Robert Lipsyte. For a long time, Mr. Lipsyte interviewed Mr. Gregory, then wrote sections of the book, and for a long time Mr. Gregory did not read any of what Mr. Lipsyte wrote. Finally, Mr. Lipsyte got Mr. Gregory to read a few chapters, then he waited, afraid that Mr. Gregory would reject the writing and the autobiography would never be published. Finally, Mr. Gregory looked up from the manuscript and said, “No, I can’t let this go through.” Mr. Lipsyte gasped, “What?” Mr. Gregory replied, “You’ve hyphenated ‘motherf**ker’ — it’s one word.” When the book was published, “motherf**ker” was one word.
• Chris Crutcher used profanity while he was growing up in Idaho, and profanity peppers some of his books for teenagers, such as Stotan! When his first book, Running Loose, was still in the editing stage, his agent suggested that a certain two-word phrase that was used frequently in the book might negatively affect sales, considering the audience for which the book was written. Mr. Crutcher agreed to remove the two-word phrase, and he jokes that by deleting the two-word phrase he turned a 300-page novel into a 200-page novel. During the time he spent editing the book, someone asked his mother where he was. She replied that she had not seen him for two weeks because he was busy “unf**king” his book.
• Some cultures are in touch with nature. Translator Burton Watson writes about being in Japan and hearing what he thought was the cry of a bird called uguisu (bush warbler). He later imitated the cry for a Japanese friend, who knew immediately what it was: “Uguisu no tani-watari.” Mr. Watson then learned from his friend that tani-watari meant “the cry the uguisu makes when he is crossing over from one valley to another.” This astonished Mr. Watson. How many cultures have a special word for one of the cries of one particular species of bird? Disbelieving, he looked in a Japanese-English dictionary and found tani-watari, which was defined as “The song of a bush warbler flying from valley to valley.”
• Robert Louis Stevenson, author of Treasure Island, wrote a story titled “The Bottle Imp,” about an imp who lived in a bottle and granted wishes. Mr. Stevenson lived on Samoa, and his story was translated into the Samoan language and printed in a missionary magazine. Later, he wished that he had not allowed the story to be translated, because many Samoans used to visit him and ask to see the imp.

Up, Up and Away. Back in the ‘60s and early ‘70s there was a Fort Wayne Indiana radio station my parents would tune in to when we drove to my grandparent’s Michigan cottage near the Indiana state line. WOWO (rhymes with ‘go go’) 1190 on the AM dial. And since there was no TV at the cottage the radio often on and was tuned to WOWO as well. WOWO had an easy listening format and you could always count on Up, Up and Away being played every day. Sadly today WOWO features hate radio shit, like Limbaugh, instead of music.

My left hand was healing nicely and was almost able to make a fist after the run-in with Diabla, the feral cat last month, but while carrying a laundry basket, whacked my knuckles against the door jamb.
So, the middle finger knuckle is about twice it's normal size again and it keeps reminding me it's there.
Then, taking a tray of garlic bread out of the oven, the hot pad slipped when my left hand didn't quite do what I thought it would, and the result is blisters on the tips of all 4 fingers on my left hand.

Stars from the South Asian community are coming together for a virtual block party in support of the Joe Biden/Kamala Harris ticket for the 2020 election.
“Joining forces with our community of brown folks/South Asians for a fundraiser for Biden-Harris is not just a natural evolution of my involvement, but something I’m so proud of. I’m thrilled to be participating in this first-of-its kind get together with other South Asian actors, artists and leaders to help our community unite our around this truly vital cause: essentially, fighting for the rights of all and the preservation of our democracy,” said Eternals and The Lovebirds actor Kumail Nanjiani.
Nanjiani is one in a handful of Hollywood stars set to make an appearance at the South Asian Block Party on Wednesday. An official fundraiser for the Biden-Harris campaign, the South Asian Block Party will also feature Hollywood figures Mindy Kaling, Lilly Singh, Aparna Nancherla and Liza Koshy as part of its informative and entertaining program.
The one-of-a-kind political get together also seeks to celebrate the increasing representation of the South Asian community in entertainment, music, and more, said organizer Rajan Shah.
Media coverage of Sen. Kamala Harris’ vice presidential nomination disproportionately focused on her race and gender, according to a report published by Time's Up Now, an organization founded in the wake of the #MeToo movement that aims to fight gender-based discrimination. A quarter of the analyzed coverage incorporated at least one racist or sexist stereotype — most of which derived from the repetition of President Donald Trump (R-Prissy)’s ad hominem attacks on Harris.
The report, released last week, compared media coverage of the announcement of Harris’ nomination this year and 2016 coverage of the announcements of the vice presidential nominations of then-Gov. Mike Pence of Indiana and Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va.
The racist and sexist “angry Black woman” trope was the most prevalent stereotype in “mainstream U.S. top-tier media coverage” of Harris, emerging in 13 percent of the analyzed coverage surrounding the August announcement that she would be Joe Biden’s running mate. Trump’s attacks on Harris’ character — as “nasty,” “mad,” and “mean” — largely fueled the prevalence of that trope, according to the report.
Some journalists also contributed to it — albeit less than Trump did overall — by characterizing Harris as “uncooperative” and “unlikeable,” the report noted. But most biased coverage resulted from mainstream news outlets perpetuating racist and sexist storylines: References to the "birtherism" conspiracy theory, for example, appeared in 10 percent of all coverage.
At a time when the journalism industry faces its own reckoning over race and racism within the industry, the report shows the persistence of sexist and racist biases in both media and politics, and the unique blend of both that Black women experience — a combination dubbed "misogynoir" by Moya Bailey, an assistant professor of Africana studies and women’s, gender and sexuality studies at Northeastern University. The report was published as part of Time's Up Now’s recently announced nonpartisan We Have Her Back initiative, which aims to raise awareness of how sexism and racism affect coverage of female candidates.
NBC has put in development a drama series based on the novel and movie Fried Green Tomatoes, with Reba McEntire attached to star, and Norman Lear executive producing, Deadline has confirmed.
Written by Jennifer Cecil, the project is described as a modernization of the beloved novel and movie that explores the lives of descendants from the original work. When present-day Idgie Threadgoode (McEntire) returns to Whistle Stop after a decade away, she must wrestle with a changed town, estranged daughter, faltering cafe and life-changing secret.
Cecil and McEntire executive produce with Lear, who was an executive producer on the film, and his producing partner Brent Miller via their Act III Productions banner. Fannie Flagg, author of the Fried Green Tomatoes novel and co-writer of the film’s screenplay, will also executive produce. Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, is the studio.
The 1991 film, directed by Jon Avnet and based on Flagg’s novel, starred Kathy Bates, Jessica Tandy, Mary Stuart Masterson, Mary-Louise Parker and Cicely Tyson. It revolved around the story of a housewife who is unhappy with her life who befriends an old lady in a nursing home and is enthralled by the tales she tells of people she used to know. The critically praised film was a box office hit, grossing $119.4 million on an $11 million budget. It was nominated for two Oscars — Best Supporting Actress for Tandy and Best Adapted Screenplay.
Robin DiMaggio, the former musical director of The Arsenio Hall Show, was sentenced today to 27 months in federal prison for embezzling nearly $1 million from a charity concert intended to raise money for children made homeless by wars. He pleaded guilty in September 2019. Arsenio Hall was not involved in the scheme in any way.
In sentencing DiMaggio, the US District Judge described his actions as “a despicable crime of sheer greed.” She also ordered him to serve one year of home confinement once he has finished serving his prison sentence. A restitution hearing in this case will be scheduled in the coming months.
During the summer of 2016, DiMaggio promised to help the Bulgaria-based nonprofit organization “Peace for You, Peace for Me Foundation” organize a concert in the Bulgarian capital of Sofia. The concert was intended to raise money to help children who lost their homes because of global conflicts.
DiMaggio, a professional drummer who had served as a musical director for the United Nations, offered to get world-famous musicians and celebrities to perform at the concert. He told the Foundation that he needed nearly $1 million to book the artists, and the Foundation’s financial sponsor wired him the money.
But according to the US Attorney’s office in Los Angeles, rather than use the money for the charity concert, DiMaggio used it to fund his personal lifestyle and pay his debts. Within weeks of the last wire transfer of $750,000, he used $251,370 of the funds to purchase a Calabasas home for his ex-wife. He also bought his mother a $35,000 car and bought his son a $24,000 car. He also wired $150,000 of the funds to a bank account in the name of his company, DiMagic Entertainment Inc. None of the transfers was sent to artists or their management in connection with the charity concert in Bulgaria.
Conservative Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett (R-Submissive) struggled to name the five freedoms protected by the First Amendment on the third day of her confirmation hearing on Capitol Hill.
Ms Barrett, president Donald Trump (R-Corrupt)’s pick to replace the late Ruth Bader Ginsburg as a justice on the US Supreme Court, was asked to name the five constitutional freedoms by Republican senator Ben Sasse during her confirmation hearing on Wednesday.
The senator asked: “What are the five freedoms of the First Amendment?” and the 48-year-old, replied: “Speech, religion, press, assembly.”
Ms Barrett then paused and started counting with her fingers, before she added: “Speech, religion, press, assembly... I don't know — what am I missing?”
The senator asked the Supreme Court nominee the question while he discussed Ms Barrett teaching students about the constitution in her previous role as a law professor at the Notre Dame Law School.
A new pro-Trump campaign ad that aired in three battleground states last week used footage from Russia and Belarus.
The America First Action advert, which launched last Thursday across Florida, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, was first reported to have featured the stock footage by Politico.
The $10 million (£7.7 million) advertisement titled “Pandemic Tax” stars Russian and Belarussian actors, and attacks the Democratic presidential nominee’s alleged plans to raise taxes “on all of us”.
It is the fourth time in three months that an advert in support of Donald Trump (R-Compromised)’s reelection bid has used footage from Russia.
Politico connected a Shutterstock account which sold stock footage seen in America First Action’s advert, to the Facebook page of a Russian man named Konstantin Mikidov.
Tardigrades, small aquatic creatures known as water bears, can survive extreme heat, radiation, and even the vacuum of outer space—conditions that would kill most animals. Now, scientists have discovered a new species of tardigrade that can endure ultraviolet (UV) light so lethal, it is regularly used to get rid of hard-to-kill viruses and bacteria.
The discovery was made by chance: Researchers at the Indian Institute of Science scoured their campus for water bears, and then exposed them to extreme conditions. They happened to have a germicidal UV lamp in the lab, so they hit their specimens with it. The dose of 1 kilojoule per square meter, which killed bacteria and roundworms after just 5 minutes, was lethal to Hypsibius exemplaris tardigrades at 15 minutes; most died after 24 hours. But when they hit a strange, reddish brown species with the same dose, all survived. What’s more, when the researchers upped the dose four times, about 60% of the reddish brown bears lived for more than 30 days.
The researchers realized they had found a new species of tardigrade, part of the Paramacrobiotus genus. To figure out how the new species—which was found living in moss on a concrete wall in Bengaluru, India—survived, the scientists examined it with an inverted fluorescence microscope. To their surprise, under the UV light, the reddish tardigrades became blue (above). Fluorescent pigments, likely located under the tardigrades’ skin, transformed the UV light into harmless blue light, the team reports today in Biology Letters. In contrast, Paramacrobiotus with less pigment died about 20 days after exposure.
Next, the researchers extracted the fluorescent pigments and used them to coat H. exemplaris and several Caenorhabditis elegans earthworms. Animals with the jury-rigged shields survived at almost twice the rate of animals without the shields. It’s likely, scientists say, that the tardigrades evolved fluorescence as a means to tolerate the high doses of UV typical for hot summer days in southern India.
The remains of a 1,200-year-old pagan temple to the Old Norse gods such as Thor and Odin have been discovered in Norway — a rare relic of the Viking religion built a few centuries before Christianity became dominant there.
Archaeologists say the large wooden building — about 45 feet (14 meters) long, 26 feet (8 m) wide, and up to 40 feet (12 m) high — is thought to date from the end of the eighth century and was used for worship and sacrifices to gods during the midsummer and midwinter solstices.
Old Norse culture was famous and feared by some a century later, after bands of Norse sailors and warriors known as the Vikings started trading, raiding and colonizing throughout Europe and into Iceland, Greenland and Canada.
This is the first Old Norse temple found in the country, said archaeologist Søren Diinhoff of the University Museum of Bergen.
A large white "phallus" stone, roughly representing the male genital organ, was also found nearby several years ago and was probably part of the Old Norse fertility rituals, Diinhoff said.
