• When Robert Louis Stevenson wrote The Black Arrow as a serial story for Young Folks magazine, the proofreader of Young Folks helped him by pointing out some errors with the story — Mr. Stevenson had lost track of the fourth arrow and of some of his characters.
• Richard Peck, author of such children’s books as Secrets of the Shopping Mall, had an excellent experience with the manuscript of his first novel. He took it himself to an editor, and the very next morning the editor called to tell him, “Start your second novel.”
Education
• Isaac Asimov’s parents believed that he ought to go to school when he had learned to read. Therefore, his mother lied about his age. He was five but had to be six to go to school, so she added a few months to his age. Not until the third grade, when Isaac was asked his date of birth, did school officials discover the error. Isaac performed well in elementary school — he used to read all his textbooks during the first week of school, with the result that he frequently skipped a grade because he already knew the material the teacher was teaching. Another thing that contributed to Isaac’s education was the public library — actually two public libraries, since he lived on the boundary line separating them. He frequently visited both the Brooklyn Public Library and the Queens Public Library, often reading the books on his way back from the library and so failing to recognize his friends on the sidewalk. Mr. Asimov, of course, became a renowned author, and he once wrote, “During my childhood as a member of an ambitious but very poor immigrant family, I did my reading and obtained nine-tenth of my learning in the public library. It frightens me to think what I might have become — and what I might have failed to become — without one.”
• Some lessons are remembered many years after they are taught. In the fifth grade, a young Ralph Nader watched as his teacher, Ms. Thompson, wrote on the chalkboard, “LOST: 60 SECONDS. DON’T BOTHER LOOKING FOR THEM BECAUSE THEY ARE GONE FOREVER!” This lesson was his best and most memorable in both his fifth-grade and his sixth-grade years. Unfortunately, another lesson Ralph learned was memorable for a bad reason. In the third grade, a very young Ralph got into trouble for correcting his teacher. She called the local library a public library, but Ralph pointed out that it was a memorial library, something that he had learned from his parents, who valued charity. Young Ralph was right, but his teacher made him sit in the dunce chair in the corner anyway. His parents valued education. His father told him, “Imagine what a bargain books are for readers. The author spends months or years writing a book. You reap the benefit of all that effort in just a few hours.” And if any of her children appeared to suffer from a case of educational overconfidence, his mother would tell them, “You better be a genius, because you’ve clearly decided to stop learning.”
• Chris Crutcher, author of books for young adults, was not himself a reader while he was in school. However, during the sixth grade, he was assigned to read Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird and after reading the first chapter, he was hooked — he couldn’t put the book down. However, Mr. Crutcher admits, “When I say I couldn’t put a book down, I mean I read it inside a month.” At this point, he was on the verge of becoming a reader. Unfortunately, the next book he was assigned to read was George Eliot’s Silas Marner, which made him believe that only one good book had been written in the entire history of the world, and he had already read it.
In a 1970s ad campaign, actress Margaret Hamilton portrayed Cora, a shopkeeper who sold only one brand of coffee because it was 'good to the last drop'. What brand of coffee did Cora sell?
Named for a cocktail, the lyrics of this 1977 song reflect a laid-back lifestyle in a tropical climate and the search for a lost shaker of salt. What is the title of this song?
"Margaritaville" is a 1977 song by American popular music singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett from the album Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes. This song was written about a drink Buffett discovered at Lung's Cocina del Sur restaurant (where High 5 is located today) at 2700 W. Anderson Lane in Austin, Texas, and the first huge surge of tourists who descended on Key West, Florida, around that time. He wrote most of the song one night at a friend's house in Austin, and finished it while spending time in Key West. In the United States "Margaritaville" reached number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and went to number one on the Easy Listening chart, also peaking at No. 13 on the Hot Country Songs chart. Billboard ranked it number 14 on its 1977 Pop Singles year-end chart. It remains Buffett's highest charting solo single.
Named for the cocktail margarita, with lyrics reflecting a laid-back lifestyle in a tropical climate, "Margaritaville" has come to define Buffett's music and career. The relative importance of the song to Buffett's career is referred to obliquely in a parenthetical plural in the title of a Buffett greatest hits compilation album, Songs You Know By Heart: Jimmy Buffett's Greatest Hit(s). The name has been used in the title of other Buffett compilation albums such as Meet Me in Margaritaville: The Ultimate Collection and is also the name of several commercial products licensed by Buffett.
"Margaritaville" has been inducted into the 2016 Grammy Hall of Fame for its cultural and historic significance.

Margaritaville. That 1977 release was written and composed by Jimmy Buffett and was his highest charting single, topping out at #8 on the Billboard Top 100. It is Buffett’s signature song and he has used the title in various commercial ventures, like his satellite radio show, a chain of restaurants, beer, apparel and what have you. Anyway, today Buffett has an estimated net worth of $550 million.

“Where L.A. Witch's self-titled album oozed with vibe and atmosphere, with the whole mix draped in reverb, sonically placing the band in some distant realm, broadcast across some unknown chasm of time, PLAY WITH FIRE comes crashing out of the gate with a bold, brash, in-your-face rocker ‘Fire Starter.’ The authoritative opener is a deliberate mission statement. ‘PLAY WITH FIRE is a suggestion to make things happen,’ says Sanchez. ‘Don’t fear mistakes or the future. Take a chance. Say and do what you really feel, even if nobody agrees with your ideas. These are feelings that have stopped me in the past. I want to inspire others to be freethinkers even if it causes a little burn.’ And by that line of reasoning, “Fire Starter” becomes a call to action, an anthem against apathy. From there, the album segues into the similarly bodacious rocker ‘Motorcycle Boy’—a feisty love song inspired by classic cinema outlaws like Mickey Rourke, Marlon Brando, and Steve McQueen. At track three, we hear L.A. Witch expand into new territories as ‘Dark Horse’ unfurls a mixture of dustbowl folk, psychedelic breakdowns, and fire-and-brimstone organ lines. And from there, the band only gets more adventurous. PLAY WITH FIRE is a bold new journey that retains L.A. Witch’s siren-song mystique, nostalgic spirit, and contemporary cool. Despite the stylistic breadth of the record, there is a unifying timbre across the album’s nine tracks, as if the trio of young musicians is bound together as a collective of old souls tapping into the sounds of their previous youth.”
“Los Angeles has always been a home for misplaced souls, and L.A Witch has the sound to go with it, dripping with nostalgia, heavy reverb, and glamour.” — NYLON
“Sanchez sounds like she genuinely might steal your car and your soul, and then drive them both through the darkness to Hell.” — VICE
“As one might expect of a band called L.A. Witch, this West Coast trio plays pitch-black pop-rock wrapped in blankets of reverb.” — Consequence of Sound
Price: $1 (USD) for track; $8 (USD) for nine-track album

The vice presidential debate featured plexiglass barriers to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. They were no match for the night’s most talked-about intruder — a fly that briefly buzzed around the stage before landing and staying on Mike Pence (R-Ofdonald)’s head.
The incident went unmentioned onstage, with the Republican vice president and Democratic Sen. Kamala Harris continuing to focus on the discussion of systemic racism in the justice system.
But as the insect took up residence on Pence's white hair, the social media firestorm was immediate — and intense. It easily created more, well, buzz than nearly anything else that occurred.
“That’s not on your TV. It's on his head,” tweeted MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow. “The fly knows,” tweeted author Stephen King. Others joked about the creature perhaps getting stuck in hair spray — or possibly now being a prime candidate for coronavirus testing.
Pence had spent much of the night shaking his head in response to Harris' answers. But the vice president didn't appear to notice the fly's arrival. Despite his talking and normal body movements, the hot stage lights and those virus-fighting barriers, the fly was unperturbed. It finally flew away on its own.
Morgan Wallen will not be making his Saturday Night Live debut after all.
The rising country star, 27, was supposed to be the musical guest this Saturday along with host Bill Burr. However, after TikTok videos surfaced of Wallen partying without a mask and kissing multiple women while at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa over the weekend, NBC rescinded its invitation amid the pandemic.
Wallen confirmed the news in a video posted on Instagram. “I got a call from the show letting me know I would no longer be able to play,” he said. “And that’s because of COVID protocols, which I understand.” He further apologized to SNL, his fans and his team. “My actions this past weekend were pretty short-sighted," Wallen said, "and they have obviously affected my long-term goals and my dreams.” He added, “I think I have some growing up to do. I think I lost myself a little bit. I tried to find joy in the wrong places and, I don’t know, it’s left me with less joy, so I’m going to try to work on that. I’m going to take a step back from the spotlight for a little while and go work on myself. I wish I could have made country music and my fans proud this Saturday, but I respect the decision once again.”
While TikTok has helped accelerate the “7 Summers” singer’s rise to fame (he has over 1 million followers), it was videos posted to the video-sharing site that led to his invitation being nixed. There to see the Alabama-Texas A&M football game, the videos showed him drinking in a crowded bar, kissing different women, riding in the back of someone’s car, taking snapshots with fans and playing a guitar at a jam-packed indoor gathering. Wallen wore a neck gaiter, but not covering his mouth — and people he was with didn’t have proper face coverings, either.
SAG-AFTRA and Actors’ Equity Association are locked in a jurisdictional dispute over the taping of live theatrical presentations. SAG-AFTRA has long held that jurisdiction, but says that it’s offered AEA a waiver to help out their fellow actors during the coronavirus shutdown of live theaters across the country. According to SAG-AFTRA, Actors’ Equity has rejected the terms of the waiver.
“SAG-AFTRA is looking to use a pandemic to claim jurisdiction in Equity workplaces now and into the future in a way they haven’t had before,” said Mary McColl, executive director of Actors’ Equity. “At a time when solidarity is required, SAG-AFTRA has chosen to disrupt the relationship between employers and actors that has existed for years, if not decades. Ultimately, the workers are the ones who are left behind.”
She also told her members SAG-AFTRA has been signing “longtime Equity employers to contracts that do not meet Equity’s safety or wage standards. As a union, our job is to ensure that workers are protected with fair pay, benefits and a safe workplace. This is supposed to be a matter of solidarity throughout the labor movement. A theatrical company working without an Equity stage manager and without the protection of Equity’s safety rules is inherently less safe, and this creates a more difficult environment for the entire company. Especially during a pandemic.”
SAG-AFTRA president Gabrielle Carteris and national executive director David White said Wednesday in a communique to their members that SAG-AFTRA “has been and remains ready to finalize the development of a waiver that will help AEA members survive the shutdown while preserving SAG-AFTRA’s jurisdiction.”
To back up their assertion of jurisdiction over tapings of live performances, Carteris and White noted that SAG-AFTRA “has for decades covered recorded or live broadcast presentations including Broadway shows (e.g., Hamilton, Diana, and Jesus Christ Superstar); televised special events (e.g., the annual Tony Awards and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade); morning shows (e.g., The Today Show and Live with Kelly & Ryan); late night shows (e.g., The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel Live!) and a host of other live theater productions and other live programs.”
A stolen poetry scroll written by Mao Zedong and valued at hundreds of millions of dollars has been recovered, Hong Kong police said Wednesday -- but not before it was cut in half.
Officers said someone handling the thieved artefact had given it the chop after judging it "too difficult to display".
The calligraphy scroll -- worth an estimated US$300 million -- was the most valuable item taken in a brazen robbery last month targeting the Hong Kong apartment of Chinese collector Fu Chunxiao.
The gang of three made off with a hoard of treasures worth, according to Fu, an estimated HK$5 billion ($645 million) that included antique stamps and revolutionary items from mainland China in what is believed to be the city's biggest heist by value.
Former Attorney General Jeff Session (R-Evil Elf) and other top Justice Department officials were "a driving force" behind President Donald Trump (R-Crooked)'s child-separation policy at the US-Mexico border, a new draft report from the department's inspector general said, according to The New York Times.
The Times reported on Tuesday that the draft report on Michael Horowitz's investigation into the "zero tolerance" policy said Sessions and former Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein (R-Compromised) called for the separation of children no matter how young they were. The draft, which is being reviewed by officials, is subject to change, the newspaper said.
The Times said it reviewed the 86-page draft report — which cited "more than 45 interviews with key officials, emails and other documents" — and spoke with three government officials who had read it. MSNBC's Jacob Soboroff tweeted late Tuesday that NBC News had also seen the draft report and confirmed The Times' reporting.
The Times said five attorneys general had told Justice Department officials in May 2018 that they were "deeply concerned" about orders to prosecute immigrants at the border even if they had to separate kids from their parents.
The Times said a prosecutor described what Sessions said in a note: "If care about kids, don't bring them in. Won't give amnesty to people with kids."
One of the most complete specimens of a T-Rex fossil in the world was sold for a record $31.8 million Tuesday by Christie's in New York, nearly quadrupling the previous highest price for a dinosaur at auction.
The apex predator made mincemeat of Christie's opening price of between six and eight million dollars, showing off the lasting power of the T-Rex.
It then shredded the previous record set by a specimen called Sue that was sold for $8.4 million in October 1997 by Sotheby's to the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago.
Bids hit the $9 million mark in less than two minutes after the start of the auction, but after 14 minutes there were just three bidders left in the race, until the hammer came down on an offer of $27.5 million, to which were added costs and commissions.
The fossil, nicknamed Stan, stands 13 feet (four meters) high and 40 feet long, with puncture marks in the skull and neck that experts believe show evidence of fights with fellow T-Rexes. He would have weighed in at around eight tons when alive, some 67 million years ago.
In a span of one month, the number of sealed coffins found at an archaeological dig in Saqqara in Egypt has ballooned from 13 to 59 — and there is more to come — the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities said in a statement.
The colorful coffins, which date back to Egypt's 26th dynasty (688 B.C. to 525 B.C.), were found stacked together within or near three burial wells, the ministry said on Oct. 3. The mummies are still preserved within the coffins; and hieroglyphic writing on the coffins indicates that many of the mummies were priests.
Beside the coffins, they found the remains of 28 small statues. One of the most interesting statues is a nearly 14-inch-tall (35 centimeters) bronze statue of the god Nefertem, who is shown wearing a headdress shaped like a lotus blossom. The headdress is made of red agate stone, turquoise and lapis lazuli, the ministry statement said. In ancient Egyptian mythology, Nefertem was a god associated with lotus flowers and was the son of Ptah, a creator god who was popular in Memphis, the first capital of Egypt. (Saqqara served as the burial ground for Memphis.)
Another small statue found near the coffins depicts the god Ptah-Soker — an amalgamation of the gods Ptah and Soker. "Saqqara was called Saqqara because of the god Soker. In the Late Period [the time the coffins date to], there was a combination of the god Ptah of Memphis with Soker," Zahi Hawass, a former Egyptian minister of antiquities, said in a video released by the ministry. "This is unique. I have never seen this before," Hawass said of the Ptah-Soker statue.
Numerous shabti figurines were also found with the coffins. Ancient Egyptians often buried the dead with shabti figurines, which they believed would work for the deceased in the afterlife.
Many people struggle to keep the pounds off during the dark winter months, but there are some who lose up to a third of their body weight in the cold season. For them, size matters – and the fatter you are, the better.
Which is why a bear thought to weigh as much as nearly eight men is being celebrated in an annual battle of heavyweights in Alaska.
A salmon-chomping bruin named 747, like the jetliner, has been crowned the fattest bear of the year, winning the popular vote out of 12 chubby contestants.
The bear, one of more than 2,200 brown bears roaming Alaska’s Katmai National Park and Preserve, was victorious after a week of online polling during the park’s Fat Bear Week.
Park chiefs estimate that 747 weighs in at more than 1,400 lbs (635kg) – that’s 100 stone, or 7.6 times the weight of an average man in the UK.
