Chris Rio: 5 Viral Stories That Had Insane Twists After We All Moved On (Cracked)
No offense, you guys, but let's face it: the Internet is a fickle audience. One day, you're all sharing a viral video of a cat squeezing itself into a flower pot, and before you know it, you've moved on to a cat saying "hey" without so much as a second thought as to how the first one got out of that pot. Well, that kitty starved to goddamn death in there, you guys. OK, so that's almost certainly not true, but …
Mark Morford: Luxy is the dating app for wealthy, attractive douchbags. At last! (SF Gate)
All the people you want most to avoid in life, now in one convenient app! "What a great service!" "What a genius idea!" "Why didn't someone think of this before?" These and other giddy exclamations will most certainly not come pouring out of your face the minute you read about Luxy, a new, horribly edited, clumsily designed, so-dumb-it-might-be-a-hoax dating/hookup app designed exclusively for rich, attractive people, AKA "Tinder for douchebags."
Mark Morford: Ello is the tiny, ad-free anti-Facebook. Does it have a prayer? (SF Gate)
Ello is having a moment. Cute, no? Ello, in case you're not fanatically dialed in to the blink-and-you'll-miss-it tech zeitgeist, is the elegant, artist-created, exceedingly simple, Courier-obsessed, ad-free anti-Facebook everyone's talking about - everyone, that is, who has the spare time to score an invite to the private beta, so they can kick the skinny e-tires on what is, at this point, no more than a quaint idea, a baffled puppy in a land of dragons, all yappy and cute until the novelty fades […] and shiny shiny hey look over there.
Mark Morford: This short movie perfectly sums up the Selfie Generation (SF Gate)
Here is this ironic and deeply amusing short film, "Aspirational," by Matthew Frost, shot for Vs. Magazine, a publication I know little about and a film which apparently has something to do with fashion. It stars, as you can see, Kirsten Dunst, as herself, along with two perfectly numbed-out, modern day, selfie-obsessed fangirls, doing what fangirls do, only worse.

Beatrice "Bea" Benaderet (April 4, 1906 - October 13, 1968) was an American actress born in New York City and reared in San Francisco, California. She appeared in a wide variety of television work, which included a starring role in the 1960s television series Petticoat Junction and Green Acres as Shady Rest Hotel owner Kate Bradley, supporting roles as Blanche Morton in The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show and as the original voice of Betty Rubble during the first four seasons of The Flintstones, and in The Beverly Hillbillies as Pearl Bodine. She did a great deal of voice work in Warner Bros. animated cartoons of the 1940s/1950s, most famously as Granny.

Excellent actress, but her voice just grated on my nerves

That would be Bea Benaderet, also of "Petticoat Junction" fame.

I recall that Bea Benaderet was Jethro Bodine's mother, Pearl, on "Beverly Hillbillies", and was also the original voice of Betty Rubble. Bea was also Kate Bradley for the first few seasons of "Petticoat Junction".

Bea Benaderet was one industrious actress from 1926 thru 1968. Lung Cancer got her. Yeah! Score another one for Big Tobacco!
DJ Useo answered:
Why, it's that delightfully whimsical actress, Bea Benaderet.
I see her in tv series nearly every day because I'm a HUGE fan of the George Burns & Gracie Allen Show,
in which Bea portrays the often nervous neighbor, Blanche Morton.
By coincidence, all her major shows like the Flintstones, & the Beverly Hillbillies are faves of mine that I own on dvd.
I'm not real keen on Petticoat Junction, but it's been years since I've seen it.
Joe S replied:
Bea Benaderet. A name I'm familiar with from radio days. Never knew what she looked like. The photo below is what she looked like on the radio.
As you all know the untimely passing of Terry was unexpected, even by
him. We all knew he had cancer but we all thought he had some years
left. So some of us who have worked closely with him over the years are
scrambling around trying to figure out what to do. My job, among other
things, is to establish communications with the Bartcop community and

Singer Stevie Wonder has been named the Grand Marshall of the 83rd annual Hollywood Christmas Parade.
The parade benefits Toys For Tots and will be held on Sunday, Nov. 30. at 6 p.m.
"I am deeply honored to be serving as Grand Marshal of the Hollywood Christmas Parade, as 2014 is a historic one in the annuals of American history, and represents the 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, a landmark piece of legislation in the United States guaranteeing all citizens equal protection of the laws under the Fourteenth Amendment. It is my privilege to give back and to be a part of an American tradition like the Hollywood Christmas Parade," Wonder said.
The parade will be hosted by Laura McKenzie, Dean Cain, Erik Estrada and Montel Williams.

Do you hate your cable company? Well, you're not alone: Matter of fact, the two most hated companies -- Comcast and Time Warner Cable -- are both cable providers. And while there's a lot to dislike, you can't entirely blame them for rampant price increases.
Right now, cable companies provide a host of cable packages at different price points with pre-bundled channels. The issue is nobody's watching the majority of these channels: A recent Nielsen study reported that on average U.S. homes receive nearly 190 channels but only watch 17.5; that means the average U.S. home utilizes less than 10% of the channels it is delivered.
However, each cable channel needs to be paid by cable providers -- and by association, cable customers who are burdened with the monthly tab -- via affiliate fees. Pay-TV providers are stuck in a situation balancing the costs of these channels with customers wary of fee increases. And not all channels are created equal: Here are the channels responsible for jacking up your cable bill.
Leading the list is Disney's ESPN channel. And while many casual observers associate the company with its namesake "land and world" parks and theme resorts, astute investors know that, at its heart, Disney is now a media company. Former CEO Michael Eisner provided significant value to investors by buying ABC in 1995, perhaps unwittingly, because ABC bought ESPN a decade prior.
And how much do cable subscribers pay for that a month -- regardless of whether they watch the network or not? Well, according to data from media-research firm SNL Kagan, ESPN receives $6.04 per subscriber every month from your cable network; the median cost per channel is $0.14 per month. However, many cable companies bundle that with ESPN2, costing subscribers an additional $0.74 per month.
The 2004 Olympic baseball stadium in Athens is now a white elephant. Oslo has pulled out of the running for the 2022 Winter Olympics after the Norwegian government advised against hosting.
That leaves Beijing, China and Almaty, Kazakhstan as the only remaining cities involved in the bidding process.
Researchers have known for years that hosting large sporting events like the Olympics always costs more than expected and always yields less revenue and useful long-term infrastructure than estimated. Now voters and politicians in democratically elected countries are starting to realize the same thing.
Potential host cities began dropping out of the bidding process for the 2022 Winter Olympics like crazy early in 2014.

Notorious Speed Trap City Closes Police Department
Waldo, Florida
A 50-year-old nationally recognized speed trap in north central Florida came to an end as of midnight Wednesday after the city of Waldo voted to disband its police department.
The Waldo city council turned over law enforcement duties Wednesday morning to the Alachua County Sheriff's Office, according to sheriff spokeswoman Becky Butscher.
The council voted 4-1 on Tuesday to disband its police force after member Carolyn Wade reported that the local prosecutor led her to believe a grand jury would be convened to investigate the police department if it continued to operate and the results would be humiliating for the city, according to the Gainesville Sun.
Waldo's police chief and a top-ranking officer had been suspended since August when five officers complained to the city council that they worked under a quota to issue 12 traffic tickets per 12-hour shift.
A Texas court on Wednesday upheld the dismissal of money-laundering and conspiracy convictions against former U.S. House of Representatives Majority Leader Tom DeLay.
The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals found that another state appeals court had correctly overturned DeLay's 2010 convictions, finding insufficient evidence against him in September 2013.
DeLay, a once-prominent Republican known as "The Hammer" for his tough political tactics, had been accused of funneling $190,000 in corporate campaign donations to Republican candidates for the Texas Legislature in the 2002 elections.
DeLay's political action committee was accused of giving $190,000 it received in corporate donations to the Republican National State Elections Committee. Two weeks later, the national committee gave $190,000 to seven Republican candidates in Texas. This practice, known as "swapping," is a way to bypass Texas law that requires corporate donations to go only to overhead costs of a campaign, according to court documents.
Judge Cheryl Johnson wrote in the ruling that although the "wheeling and dealing was a tad shady," it was legal.

It's not just the Koch Brothers. In key Senate-race states across the US, the airwaves are chock-full of political ads - and most of the money is coming from outside groups, not from the candidates' official campaigns.
This rise of outside groups since 2010 spans both ends of the political spectrum, although the conservative Koch Brothers have come to symbolize the trend.
What's behind all the outside money? Wealthy donors face federal caps on how much they can give directly to a candidate - but no limit on how much they can put toward political ads created by independent groups.

Russia has pulled out of a long-running US-funded student exchange programme, accusing the organisers of letting a teenager stay behind in the United States in the care of a gay couple.
Moscow's decision to pull the plug on the largest Russia-US high school exchange programme comes amid a showdown with the United States over Ukraine which has also seen President Vladimir Putin (R-Shirtless) try to curb the spread of Western values.
"A child, who has a mother in Russia, has illegally been placed under guardianship, and the boy has been handed over to a US gay couple," Russia's children's ombudsman Pavel Astakhov said on Wednesday.
Since returning to the Kremlin for a third term in 2012, Putin has pushed an increasingly conservative agenda, seeking to promote Russia as the antithesis of the West.

The FCC today unanimously voted to end its sports blackout rules nearly four decades after they were first implemented in 1975. Despite stiff objections from the NFL, the Commission has put an end to the rules that barred cable and satellite providers from airing games blacked out on local broadcast stations because they failed to sell out. But it only ends the government's rules. The NFL still has its own, private blackout rules in place with broadcasters like FOX and CBS, and those may still prevent fans from watching local games when tickets remain at the box office.
Specifically, here's what the FCC says is the outcome of today's vote:
The action removes Commission protection of the NFL's current private blackout policy, which requires local broadcast stations to black out a game if a team does not sell a certain percentage of tickets to the game at least 72 hours prior to the game.
Until now, the FCC's rules protected the NFL's restrictions by extending them to cable and satellite, but they're now history. FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler (D-Comcast) led a public campaign to dismantle the rules, going so far as publishing a USA Today editorial that accused blackout rules of "hurting loyal fans." "We at the FCC shouldn't be complicit in preventing sports fans from watching their favorite teams on TV," Wheeler wrote earlier this month.

Pacific walrus that can't find sea ice for resting in Arctic waters are coming ashore in record numbers on a beach in northwest Alaska.
An estimated 35,000 walrus were photographed Saturday about 5 miles north of Point Lay, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
Point Lay is an Inupiat Eskimo village 300 miles southwest of Barrow and 700 miles northwest of Anchorage.
The enormous gathering was spotted during NOAA's annual arctic marine mammal aerial survey, spokeswoman Julie Speegle said by email. The survey is conducted with the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, the agency that oversees offshore lease sales.
The gathering of walrus on shore is a phenomenon that has accompanied the loss of summer sea ice as the climate has warmed.
In a photo provided by the Detroit Zoo, a newborn giraffe calf is seen next to 5-year-old Kivuli at the zoo in Royal Oak, Mich., Wednesday, Oct. 1. 2014. The zoo says the reticulated giraffe was born Tuesday evening following a 15-month gestation. The father is 6-year-old Jabari. The zoo says the yet-to-be-named calf was born outdoors in the giraffe habitat and took its first steps about an hour after its birth. Scott Carter, Detroit Zoological Society chief life sciences officer, says in a statement that it "appears strong and healthy."
