Garrison Keillor: Sitting in a breakfast café with a small child
I gather from the news of Sunday night's Emmy Awards that we're in the midst of a new golden age of television and that I am a foreigner in my own country since I stopped watching TV in 1982. No wonder I'm having a hard time understanding younger people. I never saw "Flu Bug" or "Name of Stones." I may as well be an undocumented guy from Guatemala.
Greg Sargent: Here's a timeline of Trump's latest scandal. It's damning. (Washington Post)
The floodgates are opening: Even as more Democrats are moving decisively toward supporting impeachment proceedings, we're now learning that President Trump himself ordered a freeze on aid to Ukraine, just before telling the Ukrainian president that he wanted Ukraine to dig dirt on Trump's most likely general-election opponent.
Geoffrey Kabaservice: Impeach Trump? The United States is now in uncharted waters (The Guardian)
Nancy Pelosi, the US House Speaker, might sympathize with the quote attributed to nineteenth-century French politician Alexandre Auguste Ledru-Rollin: "There go the people. I must follow them, for I am their leader." For months following the release of the Mueller report, Pelosi had resisted pressure from within her caucus to begin impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump. But now, with more than two-thirds of Democrats in the House of Representatives favoring impeachment in the wake of Trump's Ukrainian scandal, she has reversed herself and announced a formal impeachment inquiry.
Inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame in 1998, this childhood favorite was invented by André Cassagnes, a French electrician, who named it L'Écran Magique. What is the name of this toy in the US?
Written for the film Sun Valley Serenade (1941), this song was originally recorded by Glenn Miller. Even though Celine Dion and Beyoncé had chart successes with this hit, it's considered Etta James's signature song. What is the title of this timely song?
"At Last" is a song written by Mack Gordon and Harry Warren for the musical film Sun Valley Serenade (1941). Glenn Miller and his orchestra recorded the tune several times, with a 1942 version reaching number two on the US Billboard pop music chart.
In 1960, rhythm and blues singer Etta James recorded an arrangement by Riley Hampton that improvised on Warren's melody. James' version was the title track on her debut album At Last! (1960) and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999. Celine Dion and Beyoncé also had chart successes with the song.
The song became Etta James's signature song and was the third in a string of successful songs from her Argo Records debut album (Argo LP 4003, mono; LPS 4003, stereo) At Last!. In April 1961, it became her second number two R&B hit single (Argo 5380) and crossed over to pop radio, reaching number 47 on the Billboard Hot 100. Despite its modest pop chart standing, the song is well-known and is still played regularly on oldies radio stations.

At Last. First released as a 1942 single (Glen Miller and his Orchestra) , as the B side of "(I Got a Gal in) Kalamazoo." "At Last" was popular during the war years and was included in a V-Disc the War Department sent to troops serving overseas. The 1960 Etta James cover of "At Last" was featured in her first album on the Argo label. The James version of "At Last" is now considered the highest quality version, and now all covers are compared to her "At Last." Coincidentally, I used to have a gal in Kalamazoo. Married her.

CONAN Highlight: Conan jokes about the impeachment inquiry into President Trump.
Monologue transcript:
It looks like impeachment proceedings are going to start on President Trump. President Trump is in hot water for asking the leader of Ukraine to look up dirt on Joe Biden. Now, for you history buffs out there get this - no one's asked a foreign government to interfere in a US election since way back in 2016.
Today, President Trump called his phone call with Ukraine's president "perfect." Then Nancy Pelosi said, "I agree."
According to polls, 59% of Americans do not want President Trump removed from office. That's a group made up of Republicans and comedy writers.
• Moby, who is most famous for the theme to Matt Damon's Jason Bourne movies, is an original guy. In a 1997 interview, he spoke about a family of cockroaches living in his apartment and often standing on a clock. Because of his born-again Christian beliefs, he would not kill them. Moby takes his Christianity seriously, but it may not be the Christianity that the reader is familiar with. At first, in the 1980s, he was celibate and did not indulge in alcohol and drugs; however, he realized that Jesus was not an ascetic person; after all, "he swore, and he drank, and he ran around, and he screamed at people. He loved his friends and was a very human, passionate figure. So I rejected that weird asceticism after thinking about who Christ really was and realizing that I was forcing myself to be something that didn't feel natural." As you may expect, people regard Christianity in different ways. Moby was signing autographs at a Detroit rock festival when a woman said to him, "I think it's really cool that you're a Christian." But the man standing beside her said, "You're a Christian? That's f**ked up." Moby said in the interview, "I wanted to say to them, 'Look, I like both of you, but neither one of you probably understands what that word means.'"
• The Ramones sometimes opened out on tour for the band White Zombie - something that embarrassed White Zombie member Sean Yseult because she felt that White Zombie should be opening for the Ramones. The Ramones were grateful to White Zombie for taking them out on tour with them. Joey Ramone would tell White Zombie, "You guys are so cool for taking us out." The Ramones would also say that few bands would ask them to go out on tour with them. Ms. Yseult would reply, "Well, there's a reason. People are probably too scared to ask one of the greatest bands on earth to open for them." By the way, the band Sonic Youth sometimes opened for the B*tth*le Surfers (the band did not use asterisks in its name). Despite selling many more records than the B*tth*le Surfers, Sonic Youth had a good reason for opening for them. When the B*tth*le Surfers played, things happened such as beer getting spilled and chaos being rampant and mass numbers of people getting rowdy. By the time the B*tth*le Surfers had finished their set, the stage was always a mess, and Sonic Youth avoided playing in the mess by opening for the B*tth*le Surfers.
• Culturcide became underground punk legends by taking other people's records, singing their own lyrics over top of the real lyrics, and then releasing the records. One thing they did was to sing their own lyrics over top of "We Are the World," a Live Aid/Band Aid single on which many major stars such as Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder sang. Culturcide's version was "They Aren't the World," and some of the lyrics were "There comes a time when rock stars beg for cash … There are people dying/whooah, and they just noticed." "We Are the World" was a good single that made a lot of money to help hungry people, but "They Aren't the World" is major-league satire that drove the music industry crazy and gave a lot of work to lawyers.
• Mickey McGowan, creator of the Unknown Museum, enjoys collecting odd records. Among them is an album titled Music to be Murdered By. As you may expect, the portly suspense movie director Alfred Hitchcock introduces each musical selection and tells jokes in his distinctive voice: "Why shouldn't I make a record? After all, my measurements are 33-45-78." About a record titled Companion to TV, Mickey says, "When I played [it], I discovered it was absolutely silent - there's no sound on the record! Whoever made this was pro-television and wanted to make sure that if you got the urge to play a record while watching TV, you couldn't possibly interrupt anything."
Photography
• Milt Hinton is an African-American jazz musician who took many, many photographs of fellow jazz musicians, both black and white. Whenever he would print a photograph of one of his white friends and the photograph came out dark enough for someone to comment on it, he would say, "I can't help it - that's just the way I see everybody."

Female experts in cyber harassment, slavery and climate change have been awarded hundreds of thousands of pounds as part of an annual fellowship recognising 26 young "geniuses".
Since 1981, The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation's so-called "genius" fellowship grants are awarded annually to individuals, not institutions, to "pursue their own creative, intellectual, and professional inclinations," according to the foundation. Criteria for the awards include "exceptional creativity" the "promise for important future advances based on a track record of significant accomplishments," and a potential to produce new work. The foundation has named 1,040 geniuses since 1981.
The grants are not conditional or relative to specific projects, however; the quarterly stipend supports recipients' abilities to "exercise their own creative instincts for the benefit of human society."
Fellows include geochemist and paleoclimatologist Andrea Dutton and theoretical geophysicist Jerry X Mitrovica, whose works explore sea level rise, and marine scientist Stacy Jupiter, who studies conservation strategies to protect ecosystems and coastal communities.
Graphic novelist Lynda Barry, guitarist Mary Halvorson, writers Valeria Luiselli and Ocean Vuong, and visual artists Mel Chin, Jeffrey Gibson and Walter Hood are among this year's rank of creative arts fellows.
Mattel, the company behind Barbie and American Girl, has announced a new line of gender neutral dolls called Creatable World. In the brand's own words, it is "a doll line designed to keep labels out and invite everyone in - giving kids the freedom to create their own customizable characters again and again."
The tagline for the dolls, "All Welcome," is an accurate description of the toys that are something of a blank canvas and encourage creative play. Each doll retails for $29.99 and comes with short hair, a long haired wig, clothing and accessories that can be mixed up to create hundreds of looks.
"Toys are a reflection of culture and as the world continues to celebrate the positive impact of inclusivity, we felt it was time to create a doll line free of labels," Kim Culmone, senior vice president of Mattel Fashion Doll Design, said in a statement.
"Through research, we heard that kids don't want their toys dictated by gender norms. This line allows all kids to express themselves freely which is why it resonates so strongly with them."
Back in May, Hulu announced development on a live-action superhero drama with Gabriel Luna returning to his phantom biker role after Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. However, due to an unspecified creative impasse, the streaming platform will not be moving forward with the planned series, EW has learned.
We're not sure if this development means Luna won't ever appear as Ghost Rider elsewhere in the world of Marvel; Hulu is still committed to Marvel's Runaways and Marvel's Helstrom, the latter of which was announced for development at the same time as Ghost Rider. Marvel declined to comment and a rep for Luna did not immediately respond to EW's request for comment.
Disney, which owns Marvel Studios, purchased full operational control of Hulu in a deal announced in May. Other Marvel projects in the works for Hulu include animated series Marvel's M.O.D.O.K., Marvel's Hit-Monkey, Marvel's Tigra & Dazzler Show, and Marvel's Howard The Duck, all of which will culminate in the Avengers-esque team-up of Marvel's The Offenders.
From the way things are going in the universe of Collin Trevorrow's Jurassic World, the humans are all but done for now that the dinosaurs have made it off Isla Nubar and are running around in densely-populated areas. But the latest casting news about the next Jurassic World film suggests that maybe, just maybe, there might be a chance for the homo sapiens to adapt and survive in this new landscape with the help of some familiar faces.
This week Trevorrow announced that Jeff Goldblum, Laura Dern, and Sam Neill are all returning to the franchise to reprise their roles as Dr. Ian Malcolm, Dr. Ellie Sattler, and Dr. Alan Grant. Not only that, the director expressed that all three characters will have significant amounts of screen time, unlike the brief cameo Goldblum had in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.
Presumably, all three characters have been watching things unfold from afar as people have continued to make the same foolish mistakes involving dinosaurs over and over again. Since they've had a lot of time to think on their past experiences, one would imagine they've all got some kind of gameplan as to how to deal with the beasts roaming the streets.
The as-yet-untitled Jurassic World 3-written by Emily Carmichael and Trevorrow- hits theaters on June 11, 2021.
A grand jury has declined to bring charges against an off-duty LAPD officer who fatally shot a mentally ill man and injured his parents during a confrontation at a Costco in Corona in June, Riverside County District Attorney Mike Hestrin announced Wednesday.
The decision not to charge Officer Salvador Sanchez followed a monthslong investigation by the Corona Police Department and the DA's office, culminating with the grand jury's decision on Tuesday.
Sanchez was off-duty and shopping at the Costco with his family on June 14 when he was struck from behind by 32-year-old Kenneth French, who was at the warehouse store with his parents, Russell and Paola French, authorities said.
French's parents said they tried to intervene on behalf of their son, who had schizophrenia. After Sanchez identified himself as an officer, the parents told him their adult son had an intellectual disability.
Sanchez fired off 10 shots, hitting Kenneth French four times - three in the back and once in the shoulder, according to Johnstone. Paola was hit once in the stomach area, while her husband was struck in the back, the chief said. Both were hospitalized for critical injuries.
Italian officials sounded an alarm Wednesday over climate change due to the threat that a fast-moving melting glacier is posing to a picturesque valley near the Alpine town of Courmayeur.
Courmayeur mayor Stefano Miserocchi closed down a mountain road and banned access to part of the Val Ferret, a popular hiking area outside of town on the southern side of the Mont Blanc massif. Those moves came after experts warned that a 250,000-cubic-meter mass of the Planpincieux glacier was at risk of collapsing.
The glacier, which spreads 1,327 square kilometers (512 square miles) across the mountain, has been moving up to 50 centimeters (nearly 20 inches) a day.
He emphasized that even if a large chunk of the glacier collapses, no residents would be at risk, just the area of road that has been closed.
The glacier is located in the Alps on the Grande Jorasses peak of the Mont Blanc massif, which straddles the borders of Italy, France and Switzerland and contains the highest peak in Western Europe. Officials said unusually high temperatures during August and September had accelerated ice melt at the Planpincieux, which has been monitored by the Safe Mountain Foundation since 2013.
A chemical analysis of pottery feeding vessels from the Bronze and Iron Ages suggests prehistoric European babies and toddlers had diets supplemented with, and possibly replaced by, animal milk, in what's potentially the earliest archaeological evidence of infant weaning.
New research published today in Nature is offering unprecedented insights into European Bronze Age and Iron Age cultural norms related to infant care and weaning practices. Chemical analysis of organic residues found in ancient German feeding vessels points to the use of animal milk as a supplementary or replacement food for infants and young children. The new research was led by a team from the University of Bristol.
The three ceramic vessels included in the study date to between 3,200 and 2,450 years ago (1200 to 450 BCE) and feature a spout through which a child could easily suck out a liquid. In a way, these pipe-like vessels are a precursor to modern baby bottles and sippy cups.
Spouted vessels like these have been found before, including older artifacts, also found in Germany, dating back to between 7,500 and 6,800 years ago. Because some of these Neolithic artifacts were found in child graves, archaeologists could reasonably assume they were used to feed infants. But as bioarchaeologist Sia^n Halcrow pointed out in a related Nature News & Views article, some scholars believe the drinking vessels, some of which were crafted to look like animals, were used to feed the elderly and infirm.
Two of the artifacts were found in an early Iron Age German cemetery dating to between 800 and 450 BCE, and the third artifact was found in a Late Bronze Age German necropolis, dating to between 1200 and 800 BCE. All items were found buried next to children, who ranged in age from a few months to six years old.
