America! You know what you need? Besides better bourbon, less Jesus and fewer conservatives? That's right: A good whoopin'. A serious spanking. Andrew Tobias: Republican Efforts to Suppress the Vote - #2
…the IRS is not the analog of the Republican Party. Not least because it was run at the time by a Bush-appointee. An appointee, by the way, that the Republicans in Congress for years prevented President Obama from replacing with his own. That alone, it seems to me, makes the two situations entirely dissimilar.
7 Disney Movies That Don't Get Enough Love (Neatorama)
You really have to give credit to Disney studios. Starting with Snow White in the 1930's, they have carved an unforgettable path in film and animation, often being a major part of most of our lives as we grow up. From using the death of parents on film to help teach kids how to cope with loss, to addressing issues like gender and love, there is a uniformity to animated Disney films. You walk away from them feeling better about life. They just carry that Disney magic, and you carry it with you after seeing their films, too.

Harriet Rebecca Lane Johnston acted as First Lady of the United States for four years, but was not married to the president. During what presidency did she serve?
Harriet Rebecca Lane Johnston (May 9, 1830 - July 3, 1903), acted as First Lady of the United States during the presidency of her uncle, lifelong bachelor James Buchanan, from 1857 to 1861. Among the handful of women who have served as first lady while not being married to the president, she is by far the best known. (Most of the other women were relatives of widowed presidents.)
Harriet Lane's family was from Franklin County, Pennsylvania. She was the youngest child of Elliott Tole Lane, a merchant, and Jane Ann Buchanan Lane. She lost her mother when she was 9; when her father's death 2 years later made her an orphan, she requested that her favorite uncle, James Buchanan, be appointed her legal guardian. Buchanan, an unmarried Democratic senator from Pennsylvania, indulged his niece and her sister, enrolling them in boarding schools in Charles Town, Virginia (later for two years at the Academy of the Visitation Convent in the Georgetown section of Washington, D.C.) By this time, Buchanan was Secretary of State, and he introduced her to fashionable circles as he had promised.
In 1854 she joined him in London, where he was minister to the Court of St. James's. Queen Victoria gave "dear Miss Lane" the rank of ambassador's wife; admiring suitors gave her the fame of a beauty.
The capital welcomed its new "Democratic Queen" to the White House in 1857. Harriet was a popular hostess during the four years of the Buchanan presidency. Women copied her hair and clothing styles (especially when she lowered the neckline on her inaugural gown by 2.5 inches), parents named their daughters for her, and a popular song ("Listen to the Mockingbird") was dedicated to her. While in the White House, she used her position to promote social causes, such as improving the living conditions of Native Americans in reservations. She also made a point of inviting artists and musicians to White House functions. For both her popularity and her advocacy work, she has been described as the first of the modern first ladies, and her popularity at the time is compared to that of Jacqueline Kennedy in the 1960s.

James Buchanan, America's first gay President, (according to many anonymous sources, Ronnie Rayguns swung both ways), had an extremely close and intimate relationship with William Rufus King. Andrew Jackson called them "Miss Nancy" and "Aunt Fancy" (the former being a 19th-century euphemism for an effeminate man). One of our shoddier Presidents. Helped set the stage for the insanity of the Civil War with his appeasing attitudes towards then Northern and Southern Democrats.

The U.S. Coast Guard has had three cutters named "Harriet Lane" since 1859 with the last one currently on patrol...
(WMEC-903)... all Coast Guard cutters' official designations start with 'W' - the 'MEC' means 'Medium Endurance Cutter'...
The first "Harriet Lane" was a U.S. Revenue Cutter Service vessel (the USRCS was the forerunner of the CG - added later was the U.S. Life-Saving Service with their lifeboat stations in 1915, then the U.S. Lighthouse Service in 1939) She has the distinction of firing the first naval shot of the Civil War off of Charleston harbor in 1861 after being transferred to the US Navy...
The middle "Harriet Lane" was a 125 ft Patrol Boat (1926-1946) whose class chased rum-runners and then U-boats amidst SAR operations...
The Coast Guard has had a very arcane system of naming their cutters. From naming them for trees and flowers to Indian tribes to rivers and bays to former Secretaries of the Treasury to former famous vessels to lighthouse keepers of note. It's kinda strange, but we never paid it no mind. There's currently a CG Buoy Tender named the "Abbie Burgess", for a very noted female lighthouse keeper in Maine (her father was one and she married one and she became one). She was Keeper at Whitehead Island Light, Sprucehead, Maine, from 1875-1890, the Light I became Keeper of in 1981...

FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler (D-Comcast) says that the commission has the legal standing to meet confidentially with potential critics of media mergers, after a report was published stating that companies have privately met with regulators who are reviewing the proposed combinations of Comcast with Time Warner Cable and AT&T with DirecTV.
Wheeler cited a rule in the Administrative Procedure Act that allows "a limited opportunity for entities who seek confidentiality 'due to fear of possible reprisal or retribution.'" Meetings with the FCC otherwise must be disclosed and be part of the public record.
The Wall Street Journal reported last month that FCC officials were offering anonymity to companies concerned about the impact of the proposed merger. Last week, Sen. Dean Heller (R-Nevada), who has been a critic of FCC procedures, fired off a letter to Wheeler, writing that when orders "that have significant impact on the industry are crafted based on information provided in secret and go unchallenged, I believe it can undermine the effectiveness of that order."
Among the media companies that have gone public with their concerns are Discovery Communications, which said that it has "critical issues" with the Comcast-TWC combination, particularly in the leverage that the bigger company will have during carriage negotiations.
A new study shows a large majority of African-American and Hispanic news consumers don't fully trust the media to portray their communities accurately, a statistic that could be troubling for the news industry as the minority population of the United States grows.
Three-fourths of African-American news consumers and two-thirds of Hispanics have doubts about what mainstream media report about their communities, according to a survey released Tuesday by the Media Insight Project. And while most say it's become easier to get news generally in the last five years, few feel the same way about news regarding their own community, the survey said.
African Americans and Latinos currently make up a third of the U.S. population, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. By 2043, the number of minorities is expected to eclipse the number of non-Hispanic whites, with the total minority population reaching 57 percent by 2060.
People of color who are "seeking out news about their communities, they can't find it. And what they see, they don't think is accurate," said Tom Rosenstiel, executive director of the American Press Institute, which teamed with The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research on the project. The survey was funded by the American Press Institute and the McCormick Foundation.
When asked whether they thought news about their communities was accurate, 75 percent of blacks said only "moderately" or "slightly/not at all." When Hispanics were asked the same question, 66 percent replied "moderately" or "slightly/not at all."
Women and minorities are largely shut out of the ranks of TV series directors in a stubbornly unchanged pattern of hiring, according to a Hollywood guild study released Wednesday.
The Directors Guild of America report said that employers have made no significant improvement in diversity among TV directors in the last four years.
According to the study, white males directed the vast majority of the more than 3,500 cable, broadcast and high-budget online episodes made for the 2013-14 season.
A lengthy "worst of" list with shows that hired no or few minorities or women includes HBO's "Boardwalk Empire," NBC's "Hannibal" and CBS' "The Big Bang Theory." Shows that made the "best" list include BET's "The Game," CBS' "Mike & Molly" and Lifetime's "Drop Dead Diva."
Last season, 69 percent of all TV episodes were directed by white males, with 17 percent directed by minority males and 12 percent directed by white females, the study found.

The De Beers diamond cartel warned Wednesday that global production will decline from 2020, a trend that could spell pricier bling for consumers.
A dearth of major new diamond finds means that production might not keep up with ever-increasing demand from the United States, China and India, the firm claimed.
Existing mines in Botswana, South Africa and Namibia are becoming depleted and the need to dig deeper has made operations less profitable.
De Beers said exploration has now turned to Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zimbabwe, Arctic Siberia and Canada.
But the last major mine discovery came a decade ago in India, at Rio Tinto's yet to be completed Bunder project.
Puerto Rico reggaeton star Don Omar was arrested Wednesday in the U.S. territory on suspicion of domestic violence.
Authorities said in a statement that 36-year-old William Omar Landron Rivera was detained early Wednesday at a house in the northern coastal town of Vega Alta. Authorities said he is suspected of threatening his 26-year-old partner.
No charges had been filed, but police Lt. Aimee Alvarado told reporters that an investigation is ongoing and that officers were following up on previous reports of domestic violence. She said Don Omar's partner was cooperating in the investigation.
Don Omar won 10 awards last year at the Billboard Latin Music Awards. He has also appeared in several movies, including "Fast & Furious" in 2009.

A Los Angeles judge on Tuesday issued a temporary restraining order preventing the release of an independent review into the shooting death of an unarmed black teenager by police in Southern California, officials said.
Results of the probe, conducted by the Office of Independent Review, has been sought by civil rights groups including the American Civil Liberties Union and the Pasadena chapter of the NAACP as well as the Los Angeles Times and the mother of the victim.
Kendrec McDade, 19, was shot by two Pasadena police officers in March, 2012 after a man called 911 and falsely reported he had been robbed by two men with guns.
Police chased McDade and a friend through the streets of Pasadena, 12 miles north of downtown Los Angeles, and then claimed McDade charged them. Two officers opened fire on the teen, shooting him seven times, according to an autopsy report.
A report completed by the Office of Independent Review this year has not been made public after the Pasadena Police Officers' Association sought to have it sealed arguing it contains privileged information barred from release under state law.

Former U.S. intelligence analyst Edward Snowden has accused the U.S. National Security Agency of routinely passing private, unedited communications of Americans to Israel, an expert on the intelligence agency said Wednesday.
James Bamford, writing in the New York Times, said Snowden told him the intercepts included communications of Arab- and Palestinian-Americans whose relatives in Israel and the Palestinian territories could become targets based on the information.
"It's one of the biggest abuses we've seen," Bamford quoted Snowden as saying.
Snowden said the material was routinely transferred to Unit 8200, a secretive Israeli intelligence organization.
Bamford cited a memorandum of understanding between the NSA and its Israeli counterpart outlining transfers that have occurred since 2009.

A multimillionaire Israeli celebrity rabbi with a following in the United States has accepted a plea bargain in which he admits to attempting to bribe a senior police official, and could now face a one-year prison sentence, Israel's Justice Ministry said Wednesday.
As part of the plea bargain, the Justice Ministry said Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto will admit to offering bribes and making payments in 2012 in an attempt to receive classified information on a police investigation into him and one of his charitable organizations.
Pinto has also agreed to cooperate with a police investigation into a separate bribery case against another police officer who headed a unit known as Israel's FBI. That officer later resigned.
In exchange, the Justice Ministry said, Israeli prosecutors are seeking a reduced, yearlong jail sentence for Pinto, as well as a "significant" fine and seizure of funds.
Pinto is considered one of Israel's wealthiest rabbis. The great-grandson of a famous Moroccan-born mystic known as the Baba Sali, he amassed his fortune while serving as spiritual guru to the rich and powerful in Israel, New York, and elsewhere.

Conservation group Sea Shepherd Australia said Wednesday it will switch its Southern Ocean campaign from whales to toothfish -- a rare species famed as "white gold" -- if Japan cancels this year's hunt in Antarctica.
Sea Shepherd, which has spent a decade harassing the Japanese harpoon ships during the southern hemisphere summer, said it would still keep its eye on any whaling vessels.
But provided Tokyo abided by its promise not to kill whales, the group would instead target the illegal fishing of Patagonian and Antarctic toothfish.
Toothfish live in Antarctic waters at depths of 300 to 2,500 metres (1,000 to 8,200 feet) and are long-lived species, which means they are vulnerable to over fishing due to their slowness to mature.

The long-running ideological dispute over what gets taught in Texas classrooms flared anew over proposed history textbooks Tuesday, with academics decrying lessons they said exaggerate the importance of Christian values on the nation's Founding Fathers while conservatives complained of anti-American, pro-Islam biases.
The Board of Education will approve new history textbooks for the state's 5-plus million public school students in November. But it heard hours of complaints about 104 proposed books during a sometimes heated public hearing.
Jacqueline Jones, chairwoman of the University of Texas' History Department, said one U.S. history high school book cheerleads for President Ronald Reagan and the significance of America's free enterprise system while glossing over Gov. George Wallace's attempt to block school integration in Alabama. She also pointed to a phrase stating that "the minimum wage remains one of the New Deal's most controversial legacies."
Objections such as Jones' were the most common, but some conservatives complained that the books marginalized Reagan and other top Republicans, even as they heaped praise on former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Federal researchers are exploring several underwater sites where ships sank while navigating in the treacherous waters west of San Francisco in the decades following the Gold Rush.
Over the past week, a team from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration used a remote-controlled underwater vehicle, equipped with sonar and video cameras, to examine and record the historic shipwrecks.
The five-day expedition was part of a long-term archaeological survey of the Gulf of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary, which covers about 1,300 square miles of the Pacific Ocean off the Northern California coast.
NOAA researchers say more than 300 ships have wrecked in the gulf, where heavy fog, strong winds and protruding rocks have bedeviled many vessels heading in and out of the San Francisco Bay - especially before arrival of sonar and other navigational technologies.
