George Dvorsky: 9 Overlooked Technologies That Could Transform The World (io9)
We live in an era of accelerating change. Technology is changing and innovating faster than most of us can keep up. And at the same time, it's easy to get so caught up in shiny visions of the future, and not notice the astounding things that are happening in science and technology today. So the next time people ask you where the future went, tell them it's already here.
VINCZE MIKLÓS: Famous Historic Photographs, Transformed by Color (io9)
There is something incredible that happens when we see a classic black-and-white photograph transformed into color. It makes the past seem more vivid, but also more surreal at the same time. Here are some of our favorite colorized iconic photographs.
Anthony Cerniello: Danielle (Vimeo)
"The video is five minutes long, but if you skip around, you'll miss the amazing effect, the point of it all. Anthony Cerniello wanted to show the aging process in a way that hadn't been done before. He used Danielle, but Danielle is more than one person." - Neatorama
Mumblety-peg (also known as mumbley-peg, mumblepeg, mumble-the-peg, mumbledepeg or mumble-de-peg) is an old outdoor game played by children using _____?_____
Mumblety-peg (also known as mumbley-peg, mumblepeg, mumble-the-peg, mumbledepeg or mumble-de-peg) is an old outdoor game played by children using pocketknives. The term "Mumblety-peg" came from the practice of putting a peg of about 2 or 3 inches into the ground. The loser of the game had to take it out with his teeth. Mumbletypeg was very popular as a schoolyard game in the nineteenth and first half of the twentieth centuries, but with increased concern over child safety the game has declined in popularity. Mark Twain's book Tom Sawyer, Detective recounts "mumbletypeg" as one of boys' favorite outdoor games.

Most young boys had such a pocket knife years ago. They were used for so many things besides games. Strangely, no one was seriously hurt either. Perhaps we were a gentler society before the rise of violent video games...
PS: Glad you are feeling better MAM. We missed you!

Pocket knife
Dale of Diamond Springs, Norcali Cooler, replied:
My Dad and Uncle Jack used to play it when I was a little kid. They would try to throw knifes at their feet sticking it into the ground as close as they could to their foot. Mom wouldn't let the kids play it. Uncle Jack stuck the knife into his foot twice. Lucky they wore shoes!!

Jackknives, o' course... played it as a tad... wasn't the best, but never impaled my foot. I even remember playing it at school during recess. Nowadays, however, any exhibition of it like that would result in mass hysteria and the SWAT team being summoned. My, how times have changed...

One throws the knife to cause it to stick into wood. (Table, stump, floor, etc.) - thus, the "peg".
Then the other must pull the knife loose using his teeth. Thus mumble.
(If you slip, your smile can go from ear-to-ear)
At least, that's how I learned how to play it when I was a young'n.

AMC is calling Saul Goodman for a spinoff of the network's drama series "Breaking Bad."
AMC and Sony Pictures Television on Wednesday confirmed the long-discussed spinoff, which will feature the popular supporting character from "Breaking Bad" in a one-hour prequel tentatively titled "Better Call Saul."
Played by Bob Odenkirk, Goodman is the sleazy New Mexico lawyer whose clients include "Breaking Bad" antiheroes Walter White and Jesse Pinkman, who manufacture crystal meth.
AMC said the new series would focus on Goodman before he crossed paths with those drug czars. The network provided no further details.

The most expensive hotel suite in New York city took seven years and $50 million USD to build, features cathedral ceilings, semi-precious stones in the bathroom, a grand piano and stands 800 feet (over 240 m) above the street -- the highest hotel penthouse in the city.
Named after the American business tycoon who created the Beanie Baby empire and who holds a significant share of the luxury hotel chain, one night at the Four Seasons New York Ty Warner Penthouse costs the equal of a lower middle class yearly salary in the US.
For the sum of $45,000 a night, guests of the extravagant hotel suite get panoramic 360-degree views of the pulsing city below them.
In second spot, guests of the Presidential Suite inside the St. Regis pay $35,000 a night for bragging rights to sleeping in the same room as Salvador Dali and Marilyn Monroe.
Scientists have uncovered a portion of an ancient path that may have led to Stonehenge.
While dismantling a modern road that runs near Stonehenge, the archaeologists uncovered two ditches found to be remnants of an ancient pathway called the avenue. Archaeologists have known of the avenue and suspected it led directly to the monument, but the modern road had cut the delicate pathway in two, obscuring its purpose. The new discovery confirms the avenue's role as an ancient pathway to the site.
An exceptionally dry season also revealed the imprints where three stones used to lie in the main stone circle, suggesting the massive stone monument was once a complete circle.
For years, English Heritage had planned to remove the A344 road that snaked through the area and cut quite close to Stonehenge. Though archaeologists suspected the A344 had cut the avenue almost perpendicularly, they weren't optimistic they would find any traces of the earthwork, because the road is now recessed into the ground below the grass level.
The discovery confirms that the avenue, which is about 1 foot (30 centimeters) wide, extended 0.3 miles (0.5 kilometers) straight to the stone monument before snaking onward for about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) to the Avon River in the nearby village of Amesbury.

Actor Peter Mayhew, who portrayed towering Chewbacca in the "Star Wars" films, has had double knee-replacement surgery at a Texas hospital.
Mayhew was recovering Wednesday at Plaza Medical Center in Fort Worth. Angie Mayhew says her 69-year-old husband had the surgery Monday and hopes to walk again. She says her spouse has been using a wheelchair for two years.
Angie Mayhew says her husband also had a tendon-stretching procedure to stabilize his legs. Peter Mayhew was born with a condition known as gigantism, which causes excessive growth. He's 7 feet 3 inches tall.
The British-born actor's medical issues will be the subject of an upcoming documentary, "Standing in the Stars - The Peter Mayhew Story."
The Mayhews live in Boyd, about 20 miles northwest of Fort Worth.
The music industry's largest record companies are suing SiriusXM Radio for royalties it says the satellite radio company didn't pay for recordings from before 1972.
Capitol Records, Sony Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group Recordings Inc. and Warner Music Group Corp., as well as ABKCO Music & Records Inc., an independent company that manages music rights for such acts as the Rolling Stones and The Animals, filed the lawsuit against Sirius XM Radio Inc. on Wednesday. It seeks unspecified damages and a judgment about the rights involved in pre-1972 recordings.
Sound recordings weren't brought under federal copyright protection until 1972, instead being governed through state laws. In recent years, the U.S. Copyright Office has asked for opinions about bringing so-called "oldies" under the law.
The suit is the third major complaint filed against Sirius XM in recent weeks. SoundExchange, a company that collects royalties on behalf of recording artists, filed a similar lawsuit last month in Washington, D.C.
Former hip hop mogul Marion "Suge" Knight has been arrested on an outstanding warrant after being pulled over for a traffic violation in Los Angeles.
Police Officer Sara Faden says the founder of Death Row Records was stopped shortly after midnight Wednesday near Beverly Hills. She declined to say what the alleged traffic violation was.
Officers determined Knight was wanted on a misdemeanour warrant and police took him into custody. Records show he was booked into county jail and released several hours later on $20,000 bail.
A warrant was issued for Knight's arrest in February after he skipped a court appearance for driving without a license.

Pranksters who make false emergency calls, drawing police to the homes of celebrities and other targets, will face tougher penalties under a new law signed by California Governor Jerry Brown.
The law, signed late on Monday, takes aim at the expensive and, police say, dangerous hoax known as swatting, when a caller reports that violent intruders have taken over a home, prompting an armed law enforcement response.
In Southern California in recent months, swatters have sent police to the homes of such celebrities as Ashton Kutcher, Tom Cruise, the Kardashians, Chris Brown, Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber and Clint Eastwood, according to a fact sheet distributed by state Senator Ted Lieu, who sponsored the law.
The cost of sending out such large teams of first-responders can be as high as $10,000 per call, Lieu said. Under the new law, callers making the false report - or their parents - will be required to reimburse law enforcement agencies for the full amount.
Previously, pranksters could face up to 1 year in jail and a fine up to $1,000, depending on the court's discretion. The new law does not change the potential jail time.

A "tidal wave" violently tossed ships docked along the Delaware River south of Philadelphia at about 11 a.m. ET on Jan. 8, 1817, according to newspapers of the time. Turns out, that tidal wave was actually a tsunami, launched by a powerful magnitude-7.4 earthquake that struck at approximately 4:30 a.m. ET near the northern tip of the Bermuda Triangle, a new study finds.
The study links the tsunami to a known Jan. 8, 1817, earthquake. The temblor shook the East Coast from Virginia south to Georgia, where the seismic waves made the State House bell ring several times. Based on archival accounts of the 1817 shaking, geologists had gauged the quake's size at magnitude 4.8 to magnitude 6. Now, with new geologic detective work and computer modeling of the tsunami, researchers have considerably revised the earthquake's size. A magnitude-7.4 quake releases almost 8,000 times more energy than a magnitude-4.8 earthquake.
The size and location, or epicenter, of the 1817 earthquake has never been pinned down so closely before. U.S. Geological Survey research geophysicist Susan Hough and her colleagues zeroed in on the source from newly uncovered archival records, looking at where the shaking was strongest. But they weren't sure about the tsunami link: The 11 a.m. arrival time seemed too late for a 4:30 a.m. earthquake. So they created a computer model of the tsunami, testing different locations and magnitudes. The best fit to force a foot-high (30 centimeters) wave up the mouth of Delaware Bay by about 11 a.m. was a magnitude-7.4 earthquake offshore of South Carolina.
The foot-high tsunami wave started about 800 miles (1,300 kilometers) south of Delaware Bay and 400 to 500 miles (650 to 800 km) offshore of South Carolina, according to the study, published in the September/October issue of the journal Seismological Research Letters. That's smack on the northwestern limb of the so-called Bermuda Triangle.
The "T-back" (L) and "Cover-up" buttock-shaped mooncakes sold by Hong Kong lifestyle label Goods of Desire (G.O.D) are shown ahead of the Mid-Autumn festival in Singapore September 10, 2013. The odd-looking mooncakes are a tongue-in-cheek reference to the 15th of the eighth lunar month, which is Cantonese colloquial euphemism for buttocks, according to G.O.D. owner Douglas Young in media reports. Each box retails for S$52 ($41) and consists of four different pieces of mooncakes which depicts human buttocks wearing thongs, a torn pair of trousers and one bare buttock covered by only a hand. Mid-Autumn festival falls on September 19 this year.
