Garrison Keillor: Looking forward to my Reykjavík years
This is why I despair of my fellow Democrats as we approach an election year, that we'll find a righteous nominee who says the correct things about Calhoun-type issues and who will carry five states, and in 2021, as Ginsburg and Breyer retire from the Supreme Court and the country enters a permanent state of E Pluribus Duo, and the twittering gets crazier and crazier, and mass shootings become page 7 news, and Two Corinthians becomes required reading in schools - when that happens, Iceland is going to look better and better.
Greg Sargent: Trump is lying to farmers' faces, and they're finally getting angry about it (Washington Post)
Let's stipulate up front that there is likely zero chance that farmers - or rural voters - break with Trump in 2020. Still, this illustrates the limits on Trump's lying powers: If they stick with Trump, it isn't because he mesmerized them into ignoring reality; it's that they still see other reasons for sticking with him. Those are likely rooted in partisanship more than anything else; farmers are overwhelmingly Republican voters.
Paul J. Maginn, et al.: How male 'porn superfans' really view women (The Conversation)
These findings challenge what porn scholars call the "negative effects paradigm," which sees porn as an inherently bad thing that cultivates harmful attitudes. Our survey isn't the only one that upends this way of thinking. A 2016 study based on General Social Survey data found that male porn consumers held more egalitarian views on women in position of power, women working outside the home, and abortion than those who didn't view porn. … For now, it's probably best to pump the brakes on the idea that pornography causes negative attitudes toward women. The evidence just isn't there, and much of today's rhetoric about pornography seems to be more of a moral panic than public health crisis.
This American rock band, clad in Hollywood-ized Revolutionary War costumes, saw considerable success in the 1960s & 1970s, even appearing as themselves on 'Batman'. What is the name of this group?
Originally recorded by Eddie Cochran in 1958, this song was a staple of the Who in their early days, and was covered in French by Johnny Hallyday as "La Fille de l'été dernier". What is the title of this song in English?
"Summertime Blues" is a song co-written and recorded by American rockabilly artist Eddie Cochran. It was written by Cochran and his manager Jerry Capehart. Originally a single B-side, it was released in August 1958 and peaked at number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 on September 29, 1958 and number 18 on the UK Singles Chart. It has been covered by many artists, including being a number-one hit for country music artist Alan Jackson, and scoring notable hits in versions by The Who, Blue Cheer and Brian Setzer, the last of whom recorded his version for the 1987 film La Bamba, where he portrayed Cochran. Jimi Hendrix performed it in concert.
The song is about the struggle between a teenager and his parents, his boss and his congressman.
The Who played "Summertime Blues" as a staple of their concerts from their early days up to 1976, with intermittent appearances thereafter. It has not been played since the death of bassist John Entwistle in 2002. It was performed during the 1967 US tour, from which the first known Who recordings of the song were made, including a June 1967 date at the Monterey Pop Festival.
The song was covered in French by Johnny Hallyday. His version (titled "La Fille de l'été dernier") was released in 1975 and spent one week at no. 1 on the singles sales chart in France (from May 10 to 16, 1975).

Considering that 50s on 5 is my go-to channel in my car, I can almost guarantee to be hearing 'Summertime Blues" a time or two during any given week. It's got a good beat and it's easy to dance to.
Dave responded:
Summertime Blues. Although it only peaked at #8 for the teenaged Eddie Cochran, "Summertime Blues" stood the test of time and has been covered by numerous artists, besides The Who. The Beach Boys, T Rex, and Alan Jackson and others recorded it. Brian Setzer (as an actor, playing Eddie Cochran) sang it in the film "La Bamba" (1987) and was included in the movie soundtrack album that sold over 2,000,000 copies in the US. Unfortunately at only age 21, Eddie Cochran was killed in an automobile wreck while a passenger of an English taxi cab. Cochran was in the UK for a concert.

Unlike yesterday when I knew the answer and didn't have to Google it, this was not the case today. I Googled it, and when I saw the answer I said to myself, to myself I said, "You know, I should have known that." Then I spent a lot of time bringing up '50s Rock.'n' Roll and listening to the music of my youth. So, the answer is, "Summertime Blues."
And you know, my first guitar was an "f" hole guitar similar to the one Eddie played.

• When Robert Louis Stevenson, author of Treasure Island, was sailing in the South Seas, he used to dictate stories to his stepson, who typed them. South Sea natives observed this procedure, then explained it by saying that Mr. Stevenson was singing and his stepson was accompanying him on a musical instrument. By the way, when Mr. Stevenson was sailing in the South Seas, he stopped at Sydney, Australia. He went to the Victoria Hotel, but because he was rudely treated there, he immediately switched to a different hotel. The next day, the newspapers ran front-page stories about the visit of famous author Robert Louis Stevenson, so the Victoria Hotel management visited him to ask him to move back into the Victoria Hotel. He declined to do so.
• Björk's first boyfriend owned 10,000 books - and he read them. Because he was well read, he was always ready to help Björk find exactly what she wanted to read. For example, she would tell him, "Listen, I want to read something that's kind of, like, hairy and dangerous with a nice female character." And he would get a book, hand it to her, and say, "Here you go." Björk has a collection of books, although it may not what you think it would be. When she enjoys reading a book, she gives it away. Then she buys another copy and gives that one away, too. She says, "So I haven't got any books I like - only those I don't."
Children
• Some famous composers had interesting experiences as children:
• As a boy, Johann Sebastian Bach loved music and wanted to study a book of difficult music that his brother, the organist Johann Christoph, owned. Unfortunately, his brother would not allow him to borrow the book because he felt that it was too difficult for his young brother. Therefore, Johann Sebastian "borrowed" the book each night without permission, took it to his bedroom, and copied it.
• Before he was seven years old, George Frederic Handel smuggled a clavichord into the attic so he could play it for hours at a time.
• As a boy, Franz Joseph Haydn marched in a band in a parade. His job was to play the drum, but he was too small to carry it. To solve the problem, his teacher strapped the drum on the back of another person, and young Joseph walked behind him and played the drum. As an adult, he composed the Surprise Symphony, which contains a loud, unexpected chord during a period of quiet music. Why did he do this? He explained, "To make the ladies jump."
• As a boy, Franz Peter Schubert made things difficult - in a good way - for his music teacher Michael Holzer, who told Franz' father, "Whenever I want to teach him something new, I find he already knows it."
• What is it like to be the son of a famous father and the father of a famous son? The father of Abraham Mendelssohn was Moses Mendelssohn, a famous philosopher; the son of Abraham Mendelssohnwas Felix Mendelssohn, a famous composer. People tended to refer to him in terms of his famousrelatives. Abraham Mendelssohn once said, "Formerly I was the son of my father; now I am the father of my son." The young Felix Mendelssohnwas fortunate enough to be invited to spend two weeks at the home of the great poet Johann von Goethe. Fanny, Felix' sister, was jealous and wrote him in a letter, "When you are with Goethe, open your eyes and ears wide; and after you come home, if you can't repeat every word that fell from his mouth, I will have nothing more to do with you!" In a letter to Fanny, Felix wrote about Goethe, "The amount of sound in his voice is wonderful, and he can shout like ten thousand warriors."
• Before he was 15 years old, Richard Wagner wrote a tragedy that was influenced by Shakespeare. So many people died in the tragedy that in order to have a fifth act he had to bring the characters back as ghosts.
• Edvard Grieg's first teacher was his mother, who would listen to him play the piano as she cooked and would make comments as needed: "For shame, Edvard. F sharp, F sharp - not F." People loved Edvard. As an adult composer, he had a studio - a cabin - built. Unfortunately, he discovered that it was too near the highway, and so he held a "moving bee." Friends came over, picked up the cabin, and moved it deeper into the woods.
On the toasty side, with a heapin' helpin' of humidity. Ack.

Five years ago today, Barack Obama made what was considered one of his most questionable choices as president of the United States when he donned a tan suit.
The 'scandal', which took place on 28 August 2014, occurred when the then-president chose to wear a light suit by tailor Georges de Paris for a White House briefing. Although the conference was meant to focus on the fight against Isis and Russia's intervention in Ukraine, Mr Obama's fashion choice became the centre of attention, prompting a response that came to be known as "Tan-gate".
On Twitter, analytics show there were more than 4,000 tweets referencing Mr Obama's suit during the press conference - many of which were critical of the president's style.
New York Representative Peter King said: "There's no way I think any of us can excuse what the president did yesterday… For him to walk out… in a light suit, light tan suit.
However, five years on, some believe Tan-gate has been put into perspective by the Trump presidency.
Up for his first Emmy nomination for playing a murderous Member of Parliament in A Very English Scandal, Hugh Grant today took a killer aim at perpetually ruffled UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson over the move to suspend the House of Commons and slide in a no-deal Brexit.
The Golden Globe winning actor who played possibly the most beloved fictional 10 Downing Street resident ever in Love Actually had little of that infamous British stiff upper lip in chastising the former London Mayor for the potential constitutional crisis and anti-democratic taint created by the five-week suspension:
Termed a prorogation, the procedure was approved this morning by Queen Elizabeth II under advisement from the recently installed Johnson and the UK's Privy Council.
With #StopTheCoup trending on Twitter in Britain and around the world on Wednesday, protests have emerged on the streets of the island nation and among leading politicians both of Johnson's own Conservative Party and Opposition parties plus the Commons Speaker John Bercow. The latter called the strong arming to clearly curtail debate before the October 31 exit of the UK from the European Union a "constitutional outrage" as others plan to challenge the move in Parliament itself when the body convenes briefly next week.
No stranger to airing his own political views online since the dark days of the Rupert Murdoch (R-Evil Incarnate)-owned tabloids hacking scandal back in 2011, Grant will probably be on this side of the pond for the Emmys on September 15.

A federal grand jury yesterday indicted eight people who allegedly ran two pirate streaming services that "offered more television programs and movies than legitimate streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu, Vudu, and Amazon Prime Video," the Department of Justice said.
Jetflicks, which operated from 2007 to 2017, obtained its video from torrent sites and Usenet sites "using automated programs and databases such as SickRage, Sick Beard, SABnzbd, and TheTVDB," the indictment said. Jetflicks made "those episodes available on servers in the United States and Canada to Jetflicks subscribers for streaming and/or downloading," the indictment said. Torrent sites that Jetflicks operators relied on allegedly included the Pirate Bay, RARBG, and Torrentz.
With this method, defendants often "provid[ed] episodes to subscribers the day after the shows originally aired on television," a DOJ announcement yesterday said. Jetflicks charged subscription fees as low as $9.99 per month, letting subscribers "watch an unlimited number of commercial-free television programs," the indictment said. The service claimed to have more than 37,000 subscribers.
One of the eight defendants, 36-year-old Darryl Julius Polo, left Jetflicks to create another site called iStreamItAll, which was still online today. iStreamItAll likely won't stay online long, though, as the indictment said the site's domain names are subject to forfeiture. The Jetflicks domain names were also subject to forfeiture orders, and the website is offline.
Jetflicks "claimed to have more than 183,200 different television episodes," while iStreamItAll "at one point claimed to have 115,849 different television episodes and 10,511 individual movies," the DOJ said. iStreamItAll "publicly asserted that it had more content than Netflix, Hulu, Vudu and Amazon Prime," the DOJ said. (Netflix offered 4,010 movies and 1,569 TV shows as of 2018, according to Netflix search engine Fixable.)
Migrant girls being held by the Trump administration are being given only very limited access to items as basic as sanitary pads and tampons, according to a lawsuit that claims to put fresh light on the "appalling" conditions being endured by youngsters.
Earlier this year, it was revealed children being held in facilities in Texas operated by immigration authorities, were being detained in circumstances United Nations (UN) human rights chief Michelle Bachelet said appalled her. Children were denied access to showers, adequate food or bedding, allegedly in breach of a 20-year ruling.
Now, in a lawsuit filed by 19 states, further details have been provided by some of those children, who told investigators they were held in rooms too small to sit down in, were repeatedly woken through the night by "roll calls", and were made to fight for food that guards threw on the floor.
One young woman told lawyers from Washington state, that menstruating youngsters were permitted only one tampon, or sanitary pad, a day. After that, at least one girl "had no choice but to continue to wear her soiled underwear" and clothes.
The lawsuit includes testimony by lawyer Alma Poletti, an investigator in Mr Ferguson's civil rights division, who said one young woman who was having her period was only permitted to take a shower after 10 days.
Archeologists in Peru say the 227 bodies they have unearthed from a site used by the pre-Columbian Chimu culture is the biggest-ever discovery of sacrificed children.
Archeologists have been digging since last year at the huge sacrificial site in Huanchaco, a beachside tourist town north of the capital Lima.
"This is the biggest site where the remains of sacrificed children have been found," chief archeologist Feren Castillo told AFP on Tuesday.
Castillo said the children, who were aged between four and 14, were sacrificed in a ritual to honor the Chimu culture's gods.
"They were sacrificed to appease the El Nino phenomenon," and show signs of being killed during wet weather, he said.
When you're an 80kg (180lb) apex predator with massive teeth and claws, the world is your litter box-but you might have to wait a few thousand years for someone to come along and clean it up. Archaeologists recently scooped up a dried piece of 16,500-year-old puma feces (called a coprolite) from the floor of the Peñas de las Trampas rock shelter in the mountains of northwest Argentina.
The cold, dry environment helped preserve the material, along with its cargo of a few dozen roundworm eggs, well enough for parasitologist Romina Petrigh and her colleagues to sequence DNA from the eggs. The result is the oldest DNA ever recovered from feces and the oldest parasite DNA ever sequenced.
Mitochondrial DNA from the coprolite itself revealed what had left the evidence behind: a puma, the largest member of the family Felidae, which also includes domestic cats. The dried-up calling card showed that Ice Age pumas shared the southernmost reaches of South America with giant ground sloths, now-extinct American horses, and the relatives of modern alpacas and llamas. It also offers a sample of the less-charismatic part of the ecosystem: the parasites that infected the local megafauna. The combination is a snapshot of the complex, untouched world people first walked into around 15,000 years ago (as far as we know based on current evidence; the human settlement timeline is regularly revised as new sites turn up).
The 64 tiny roundworm eggs mixed in with the remains of the Pleistocene puma's last meal can tell us something about how parasites and their hosts have co-evolved over the last few thousand years. The roundworm Toxascaris leonina lives most of its life attached to the intestinal lining of carnivores like cats, dogs, and foxes, where it can cause diarrhea, vomiting, and other unpleasant digestive symptoms. Animals pick up the 7-10cm (3-4in.) passengers when they eat an infected rodent-where larvae sometimes lie in wait for a better host-or swallow a bit of egg-laden feces (anyone with a dog and a litterbox in the same house knows that these things happen).
Although the new find shows that T. leonina is an ancient pest, the roundworm still infects modern pets and wild carnivores pretty regularly. It's so common in domestic cats and dogs that, until recently, scientists thought domestic carnivores had originally spread the parasite to their wild neighbors in the first place. But if pumas in Argentina had intestines full of T. leonina before humans and their domesticated dogs made it so far south, it can't have been domestic pets' fault.
