Paul Krugman: The Reactionary Soul (NY Times Blog) Frank Bruni marvels at polls indicating that Donald Trump, with his multiple marriages and casinos, is the preferred candidate among Republican evangelicals. Others are shocked to see a crude mercantilist make so much headway in the alleged party of free markets. What happened to conservative principles? Actually, nothing - because those alleged principles were never real.
Josh Marshall: Gaming Out the Trump Nightmare Scenarios (TPM)
Obviously, five months is a long time, blah blah blah. Trump could easily fall apart before then or the shape of the race could change. But it no longer seems like one outlandish remark will sink him or gut his support. That's happened enough times already that I think we can be clear on that. But with such a divided field and no other strong candidates in the race, I'm less clear that it matters that so many Republicans say he'll never be their choice. 25% to 30% could be plenty.
Kyle Smith: How Ty Cobb was framed as a racist (NY Post)
The two things everyone knows about Ty Cobb are that he was a phenomenal baseball player and that he was the worst racist ever to play the game. But one of these things is mostly wrong.

That same afternoon, I noticed a huge swarms of dead flies - not the usual lake gnats, the no-see-ums and such - but large, black flies, by the tens of thousands - covering the surface of lake near our cabin. I skipped my swim.

Rights groups reacted furiously on Wednesday after Venice's mayor said he would seek to ban Gay Pride parades for as long as he is in charge of the city of canals.
"There will be no Gay Pride in my Venice," Luigi Brugnaro said in an interview with La Repubblica, describing such celebrations as "a farce" and "the ultimate in kitsch".
Brugnaro, a centre-right business figure elected in June, had already stirred controversy by withdrawing books depicting same-sex families from the city's nurseries and primary schools.
His latest outburst came just a week before the city is due to host Johnny Depp and a string of other international cinema stars for the annual film festival.

Some Broadway heroines are rolling up their sleeves and posing in a familiar way to support National Women's Equality Day.
Kristin Chenoweth, Laura Benanti and Patina Miller were some of the women Wednesday on Twitter or Instagram striking the classic Rosie the Riveter pose.
Others included the leading ladies of "Hamilton" - Renée Elise Goldsberry, Jasmine Cephas Jones and Phillipa Soo - and the trio of women heading the "The King and I" - Kelli O'Hara, Ruthie Ann Miles and Ashley Park.
It's an attempt to bring attention to the fact that there's no Equal Rights Amendment and to help it get reintroduced in Congress.
Other participants included Beth Malone and Judy Kuhn from "Fun Home," composers Cyndi Lauper and Sara Bareilles, and actresses Laura Osnes and Stephanie J. Block.
Joy Behar is returning to "The View" as a co-host, part of an overhauled panel that also will include newcomers Candace Cameron Bure and Paula Faris.
Another familiar "View" face, former co-host Sherri Shepherd, will be back as a contributor, ABC News said Tuesday.
ABC has been trying to find the right formula and improved ratings for the daytime talk show since the departure of co-creator and on-air leader Barbara Walters in 2014.
Behar, Cameron Bure and Faris will join returning moderator Whoopi Goldberg and co-hosts Raven-Symoné and Michelle Collins for the show's 19th season that begins Tuesday, Sept. 8.

USA Network is postponing airing the Season 1 finale of computer hacker drama "Mr. Robot" over a scene described as "similar" to the incident in Virginia.
"The previously filmed season finale of 'Mr. Robot' contains a graphic scene similar in nature to today's tragic events in Virginia. Out of respect to the victims, their families and colleagues, and our viewers, we are postponing tonight's episode. Our thoughts go out to all those affected during this difficult time," a statement from the network read.
The finale of the show, which stars Rami Malek, Christian Slater, Carly Chaikin and Portia Doubleday, will now air next week, on Wednesday, September 2 at 10/9c.
On Wednesday morning a gunman shot and killed Alison Parker and Adam Ward, a reporter and photographer from WDBJ-TV in Virginia, as they were live on air.
Fox News Channel unleashed its anchors on Tuesday to fight back against Donald Trump's renewed criticisms of star anchor Megyn Kelly.
"He is totally out of bounds reigniting that fight," Fox & Friends host Brian Kilmeade said on Tuesday's show."I don't know if he expects to get ratings out of that, or poll numbers, but he's not going to be successful. "You can not, you should not, keep going after her."
Kilmeade also called Trump "totally out of control" (probably a comment that won't help keep Trump as a regular phone guest on the morning show).
Sean Hannity, Geraldo Rivera, Bret Baier, Bill Hemmer and Dana Perino took to Twitter to directly and indirectly tell Trump to cool it with the Kelly attacks.
The anchors' breaking their silence is the first of what's likely to be a strong, coordinates response from Fox News and network chairman Roger Ailes.

Sea levels worldwide rose an average of nearly 3 inches (8 cm) since 1992, the result of warming waters and melting ice, a panel of NASA scientists said on Wednesday.
In 2013, a United Nations panel predicted sea levels would rise from 1 to 3 feet (0.3 to 0.9 meters) by the end of the century. The new research shows that sea level rise most likely will be at the high end of that range, said University of Colorado geophysicist Steve Nerem.
Sea levels are rising faster than they did 50 years ago and "it's very likely to get worse in the future," Nerem said.
The changes are not uniform. Some areas showed sea levels rising more than 9 inches (25 cm) and other regions, such as along the U.S. West Coast, actually falling, according to an analysis of 23 years of satellite data.
Scientists believe ocean currents and natural cycles are temporarily offsetting a sea level rise in the Pacific and the U.S. West Coast could see a significant hike in sea levels in the next 20 years.
Fracking by a Canadian subsidiary of Malaysian oil and gas giant Petronas triggered one of the world's largest earthquakes linked to the controversial practice, Canadian media said Wednesday.
The British Columbia Oil and Gas Commission said it has linked the operations of Progress Energy in the province's northeast to a 4.4-magnitude quake felt in Fort St John in August 2014, the CBC reported.
The commission told the broadcaster that the quake was "triggered by fluid injection during hydraulic fracturing" by the company.
It was preceded by a 3.9-magnitude quake in July the same year, also believed to have been caused by fracking.
After the 2014 quake, Progress Energy was ordered to reduce the amount of fluid it was using in the process, and has complied, said CBC.

Doubts emerged Wednesday over the authenticity of an Italian painting supposedly worth $1.5 mn, which hit headlines after a 12-year-old boy punched a hole through it as he tripped and fell during an exhibition in Taiwan.
Organisers said the "Flowers" painting, which forms part of a collection of 55 artworks in Taipei, was by Italian artist Paolo Porpora and dated back to the 1600s.
But a report in Taiwan's Apple Daily said the painting seemed identical to an artwork entitled "Composizione con vaso di fiori," a 17th-century piece by Mario Nuzzi, which was listed in the 2012 catalogue of the Della Rocca Casa d'Aste auction house, with a guide price of 25,000 to 30,000 euros ($28,700-$34,000). The work went unsold.
David Sun, head of TST Art of Discovery Co which sponsored the Taiwan exhibition, insisted that the two paintings were different, without going into details.
Do you text or otherwise engage with a small screen during a social gathering? A U.S. survey suggests you are not alone, even if you are annoyed when other people do exactly the same thing.
The Pew Research Center survey on shifts in what is acceptable in an always-wired world found 82 percent of American adults say that using cellphones hurt conversation in social gatherings.
But even more people - 89 percent - say they used their phones during their most recent get-together, including for texting, talking and for a photo.
Lee Rainie, Pew's director of Internet, science and technology research, said the survey underscored big issues about how technology is disrupting longstanding rules on human interaction.
The survey of U.S. adults showed that 92 percent had a cellphone. Of those, nine out of 10 said they were always with them.
A survivor of the September 11, 2001 attacks on New York who was featured in one of the most haunting photographs of the outrage has died of stomach cancer. She was 42.
Marcy Borders, who was 28 at the time of the attacks, was just one month into a job for Bank of America in one of the Twin Towers.
As one of the towers collapsed, she took refuge in a nearby office building, where AFP photographer Stan Honda took a haunting photo of her completely covered in a thick layer of ash, which earned her the moniker "The Dust Lady."
The air appeared heavy and a distraught Borders was shrouded in a cloud of dust and backlit by an eerie yellow luminescence.
After the attacks, Borders spiraled into a decade-long deep depression and alcohol and drug abuse, though she eventually recovered.
She lost her job at Bank of America, where she ignored repeated offers of a transfer.
She spent much of her time sequestered in her two-room flat, in one of the poorer parts of Bayonne, a bedroom community in New Jersey over the bridge from Manhattan.
Borders was relying on her mother for food at the time and said no one had contacted her in the months that followed the attacks and her photo was beamed around the world.
No aid organizations helped her and no one had told her that mental services were available for free for 9/11 survivors.
Borders went into rehab in 2011, and has said that news of the death of Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden helped her regain peace and recover from her trauma.
After her diagnosis, she suggested in interviews that her exposure to chemical pollutants emitted by the World Trade Center collapse likely had a role in her illness.
