Josh Marshall: "High Trust, High Fear: Inside the Dystopian Hellhole of Trumpism" (TPM)
People who study negotiation call this the difference between "distributive negotiation" and "integrative negotiation", one of which is about seeking maximum advantage and the other about building sustainable relationships. Each can be appropriate in a particular context. If you're buying a car, you simply want to pay as little as possible. But that's seldom the basis of a productive on-going relationship. Donald Trump only thinks about the former approach. It's worked well for him. It's also why, before he became President, every major US bank had blackballed him, refused to loan him money. Because he can't be trusted. He's a cheat.
Paul Waldman: Why are so many people Trump hires corrupt, incompetent and immoral? (Washington Post)
There's a fundamental fallacy at work in this argument even when it's offered by an ordinary businessperson. It's the widely held belief that effectiveness in government requires no relevant knowledge or experience and is only a matter of the business mind-set or things such as "common sense." The truth, however, is just the opposite: Public policy, which combines intricate practical challenges with unpredictable political situations, is often far more complex than anything a corporate CEO ever has to deal with.
Garrison Keillor: My weekend in Manhattan: a memoir
A string of blazing summer days in New York City and after the sun went down, perfect summer nights, diners in sidewalk cafes along Columbus Avenue, dogs walking their owners, and my wife walking me. "You need to get out and move around," she says. "It's not healthy to sit at a desk all day." And she is right. I am stuck on a memoir I'm writing, pondering the wrong turns of my early years. How much do you want to know? Are you sure?
"Never Learn Not to Love" is a song recorded by the American rock band the Beach Boys, credited to Dennis Wilson, and released as the B-side to the group's "Bluebirds over the Mountain" single on December 2, 1968. The song was actually an altered version of "Cease to Exist", written by Charles Manson, an ex-convict who was seeking a career as a singer-songwriter. Musically, Wilson deviated from Manson's blues influence, reworking it to fit the band's pop-oriented approach. Two months after its release, it was included on the Beach Boys' 15th studio album 20/20.
In November 1969, about a year after the Beach Boys recorded his song, Manson and his cult of followers were apprehended for the murders of several people, including of the actress Sharon Tate.
According to biographer Peter Ames Carlin, Manson penned "Cease to Exist" specifically for the Beach Boys to record, and biographer Steven Gaines said that Manson "reportedly" wrote the song to help ease tensions within the group. Bandmember Mike Love recalled that he was not aware of the song's author, and assumed that Dennis had written it. In exchange for the publishing rights to "Cease to Exist", Manson received a sum of cash and a BSA motorcycle which he later gave to Family member "Little" Paul Watkins.

That's a Charles Manson song.

Charles Manson.

Dave wrote:
Charles Manson. A very strange story. Beach Boy Dennis Wilson struck up a friendship with Manson and bought the song, which was changed and renamed, without giving Manson a songwriting credit. Being uncredited infuriated Manson who reportedly threatened an alarmed Wilson, who gave Manson "about $100,000 worth of stuff" to pay him off and ended the friendship. About 1 year after "Never Learn Not To Love" was released as the B side of "Bluebirds Over the Mountains" (another 1968 Beach Boys song I'm not familiar with), Manson and his cult were arrested for murder and Manson never got out of prison again.
Gene replied:
One of the great oracles sez:
Never Learn Not To Love by The Beach Boys Songfacts. This song was originally written by Charles Manson and titled "Cease To Exist.". Beach Boys drummer Dennis Wilson made some minor lyrical changes to it, which supposedly upset Manson greatly.
Deborah responded:
I never heard of "Cease to Exist" so I looked it up. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that Charles Manson wrote that song. Eek.
A few cooler than normal days - I'll take 'em. Triple digits by this weekend. Some of my tomatoes and the basil are done with producing, so I'm working on our winter garden plans this week.
Kevin K. of Washington, DC said:
"Cease To Exist" was written by none other than Charles Manson. Tough to say
which was worse: ripping off Chuck Berry by swiping from "Sweet Little
Sixteen" with "Surfin' USA" or actually paying Manson for the song the lousy
B-side "Never Learn Not To Love" is based on.
Cal in Vermont replied:
Charles Manson wrote and performed the song. Dennis Wilson and Terry Melcher expressed some interest in recording the song to go along with a possible documentary on the hippy commune lifestyle. Nothing came of it which made Charles Manson mad and the rest is history.
Dave in Tucson responded:
Cease to Exist was written by Charles Manson.
The Southern Cow actually talked about erratic conduct and behavior from not-Trump and God didn't strike her deaf and dumb?! (Or dumber than she already is.)
JHC in a handbasket! Look in the dictionary for the erratic conduct and behavior entry! There's no definition; just the attached!

We are all only temporarily able bodied.
So far so good on beating cancer for now. I'm doing fine. At the end of the month I'll be 16 months into an 8 month mean lifespan. And yesterday I went on a 7 mile hike and managed to keep up with the hiking group I was with. So, doing something right.
Still waiting for future test results and should see things headed in the right direction. I can say that it's not likely that anything dire happens in the short term so that means that I should have time to make several more attempts at this. So even if it doesn't work the first time there are a lot of variations to try. So if there's bad news it will help me pick the next radiation target.
I have written a "how to" guide for oncologists to perform the treatment that I got. I'm convinced that I'm definitely onto something and whether it works for me or not isn't the definitive test. I know if other people tried this that it would work for some of them, and if they improve it that it will work for a lot of them.
The guide is quite detailed and any doctor reading this can understand the procedure at every level. I also go into detail as to how it works, how I figured it out, and variations and improvements that could be tried to enhance it. I also introduce new ways to look at the problem. There is a lot of room for improvement and I think that doctors reading it will see what I'm talking about and want to build on it. And it's written so that if you're not a doctor you can still follow it. It also has a personal story revealing that I'm the class clown of cancer support group. I give great interviews and I look pretty hot in a lab coat.
So, feel free to read this and see what I'm talking about. But if any of you want to help then pass this around to both doctors and cancer patients. I need some media coverage. I'm looking for as many eyeballs as possible to read these ideas. Even if this isn't the solution, it's definitely on the right track. After all, I did hike 7 miles yesterday. And this hiking group wasn't moving slow. So if this isn't working then, why am I still here?
I also see curing cancer as more of an engineering problem that a medical problem. So if you are good at solving problems and most of what you know about medicine was watching the Dr. House MD TV show, then you're at the level I was at when I started. So anyone can jump in and be part of the solution.

Republicans on Wednesday condemned a poster by Pearl Jam that shows the White House in flames and a bald eagle pecking at a skeleton they say is meant to depict President Donald Trump.
The National Republican Senate Committee compared it to the now-infamous photo of comedian Kathy Griffin holding a fake decapitated Trump head.
The rock group's Twitter account says the official poster from Monday's concert in Missoula, Montana, is a collaboration between bassist Jeff Ament and Bobby Brown, an artist also known as Bobby Draws Skulls.
The "Rock2Vote" concert aimed to encourage young people to vote in the November midterm elections and support Democratic U.S. Sen. Jon Tester of Montana, who is from Ament's hometown of Big Sandy.
"The role of the artist is to make people think and feel, and the current administration has us thinking and feeling," Ament said in the statement. "I was the sole conceptualist of this poster, and I welcome all interpretations and discourse."
Paul McCartney teamed with Grammy-winning hitmaker Ryan Tedder for his new single "Fuh You." The song has a bouncy piano and harpsichord line, helium-voiced backing vocals and a danceable rhythm, as the former Beatle recalls meeting a lover.
"I just wanna know how you feel, I want a love that's so proud and real," he sings in the chorus, "You make me want to go out and steal/I just want it fuh you." Though it's safe to assume that McCartney, who uses the word "raunchy" to describe the tune, wouldn't be surprised if you misheard that last line. The song will appear on his upcoming album, Egypt Station, due out September 7th.
"With this one I was in the studio with Ryan Tedder whereas the rest of the album has been made with [producer] Greg Kurstin," McCartney said in a statement. "We were just thinking of ideas and little pieces of melody and chords and the song just came together bit by bit. And then I would try and make some kind of sense of the story.
"So it was like 'Come on baby now,'" he continued. "'Talk about yourself. Tell the truth, let me get to know you' and basically I wanna know how you feel, you make me wanna go out and steal. I just want it for you. So that was the basic idea and it developed from there… sort of a love song, but a raunchy love song. There you go - fuh you."
In the meantime, he's been on a media blitz, visiting Liverpool with James Corden and taking a tour of The Late Late Show with the host. He'll also be the subject of an hour-long primetime special, Carpool Karaoke: When Corden Met McCartney Live From Liverpool, which will air on CBS on August 20th.
The man who killed John Lennon is up for parole again.
Mark David Chapman The killer is scheduled to go before New York's parole board next week, in what will be his 10th attempt to win release. A decision is expected within two weeks of the parole hearing.
The now 63-year-old Chapman killer is serving 20-years-to-life in the Wende Correctional Facility in western New York. He shot and killed the former Beatle outside his Manhattan apartment on Dec. 8, 1980.
The state Board of Parole last denied parole to Chapman the killer two years ago.
Aerosmith clearly does not want to miss a thing called a Las Vegas residency.
On Wednesday the rock band announced its "Deuces Are Wild" residency, which will kick off on April 6, 2019, at the Park Theater in the new Park MGM resort on the Vegas Strip.
There will be 18 shows scheduled through July 9.
Tickets start at $75 a pop and go on sale Friday, Aug. 24, at 10 a.m. PT.
And although lead singer Steven Tyler said the band can't give away too many details, a press release from Live Nation, which is promoting the event with MGM Resorts International, sheds some light on what fans can expect, such as "never-seen-before visuals and audio from Aerosmith recording sessions" and some stellar acoustics.
A pirate radio station in Texas that served as the flagship for conspiracy theorist Alex Jones has dropped off the air amid an intensifying fight with the FCC.
The Department of Justice filed suit against Walter and Rae Olenick, accusing them of operating an unlicensed radio station out of their Austin apartment complex since at least 2013.
The FCC sent the couple multiple letters, warning of the dire consequences of broadcasting without a license, including fines, seizure of equipment and even criminal sanctions. It called upon the operators of Liberty Radio to "cease immediately."
The Olenicks responded that the agency lacked jurisdiction and to "kindly never bother us with your harassment … again."
The U.S. Attorney filed suit last Friday in U.S. District Court in Austin, seeking to force the couple to pay the penalty. The Austin-American Statesman reported that religious programming was airing on 90.1 FM on Wednesday, in place of Liberty Radio.
Even the oceans are breaking temperature records in this summer of heat waves.
Off the San Diego coast, scientists earlier this month recorded all-time high seawater temperatures since daily measurements began in 1916.
"Just like we have heat waves on land, we also have heat waves in the ocean," said Art Miller of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
Between 1982 and 2016, the number of "marine heat waves" roughly doubled, and likely will become more common and intense as the planet warms, a study released Wednesday found. Prolonged periods of extreme heat in the oceans can damage kelp forests and coral reefs, and harm fish and other marine life.
"This trend will only further accelerate with global warming," said Thomas Frolicher, a climate scientist at the University of Bern in Switzerland, who led the research.
The psychedelic drug DMT produces an effect in the brain similar to that felt by people undergoing near-death experiences, according to a new study.
A powerful hallucinogen, the substance is widely used for ceremonial purposes in South America as part of the brew known as ayahuasca.
Though the drug is illegal in most countries, its connection with spirituality is widely acknowledged and has earned it the nickname "the spirit molecule".
Near-death experiences (NDEs) are psychological events often reported by those who think they are about to die, and can include out of body experiences, feelings of transitioning to another world and inner peace.
As similar feelings are often reported by DMT users, researchers at Imperial College London wanted to investigate how deep the connection between these experiences went.
