Andrew Tobias: Fundraising Stories
Long-time readers know that if today's Republican leaders were like Abe Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, or Dwight Eisenhower - or even Richard Nixon, sans the demons and the conspiracy to subvert an election - I might still vote "Democrat" most of the time, but I sure wouldn't have spent the last 15 years of my life as a fundraiser.

Female viewers are flocking to US cinemas to see the newest release from the Marvel stable, with women making up almost half of the audience. Why? It offers something often missing in superhero movies.
Eddie Deezen: The Inside Stories of Six I Love Lucy Episodes (Neatorama)
August 6 is the 103rd birthday of the great Lucille Ball (Lucy was born in Jamestown, New York on August 6, 1911). Who doesn't love Lucy? A brilliantly talented comedienne, we followed and laughed at Lucy's crazy adventures through 179 episodes of her classic TV show I Love Lucy.
Beatnik was a media stereotype of the 1950s to mid-1960s that displayed the more superficial aspects of the Beat Generation literary movement of the 1950s and violent film images, along with a cartoonish depiction of the real-life people and the spiritual quest in Jack Kerouac's autobiographical fiction.
Kerouac introduced the phrase "Beat Generation" in 1948, generalizing from his social circle to characterize the underground, anti-conformist youth gathering in New York at that time. The name came up in conversation with the novelist John Clellon Holmes who published an early Beat Generation novel, Go (1952), along with a manifesto in The New York Times Magazine: "This Is the Beat Generation" In 1954, Nolan Miller published his third novel, Why I Am So Beat (Putnam), detailing the weekend parties of four students.

Proof uno…My lady and I went to see "I Got You" last Saturday Night in Placerville, CA. This is a terrific movie that I highly recommend. The singing and dancing in the flick got us moving our feet and bodies in our seat. We saw it in an almost empty theater. There were just five other women inhabiting the showplace. But us seven had a real honkiefest gyrating to the rhythms as the credits rolled.
Lois, Beat To My Socks, In Oregon replied:
Ha! Didn't have to look this one up as I once tried to read
"On The Road", hoping to gain insight into the buddhist
experience and instead got a book to the face from falling
asleep while reading in bed. No enlightenment, just more
evidence of the pervasive atavism that descended on this
country after the Great War! Aimless young people crippled
by self-absorption and angst. FEH.
P.S. @ Dale...you're right, dude! It DOES NOT rain in
California in August (left L.A. in '94) but (adjusting the

WHITE smog-like haze which made for some stunning sunrises
and sunsets the last couple of days.

As you all know the untimely passing of Terry was unexpected, even by
him. We all knew he had cancer but we all thought he had some years
left. So some of us who have worked closely with him over the years are
scrambling around trying to figure out what to do. My job, among other
things, is to establish communications with the Bartcop community and
provide email lists and groups for those who might put something

U.S. Ambassador to Japan Caroline Kennedy attends a ceremony at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park in Hiroshima, western Japan, Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2014. Japan marked the 69th anniversary Wednesday of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima.
For almost 50 years, George Takei has been a pioneering voice in culture, co-starring in the original "Star Trek" television series and becoming known to a new generation of fans as an online social commentator and humorist.
But Takei took on a more serious and somber tone this week, revisiting the city of Hiroshima to commemorate the 69th anniversary of the devastating atomic bomb attack that killed more than 100,000 people.
Takei was in Hiroshima to tape a new episode of his ongoing web series "Takei's Take" on AARP's YouTube Channel. But he also used the experience to open up about his firsthand experience of living in a Japanese American internment camp in 1942.
Takei was just 5 years old when along with his younger brother, sister and their parents, was placed inside an internment camp in Rohwer, Arkansas. Later, they were moved to a second camp in Tule Lake, California. Although he and the other prisoners were largely cut off from the outside world, word began to spread through the camp shortly after the atomic bombs had landed in Japan. One of those attacks led to the death of Takei's aunt and his 5-year-old cousin.
Conan O'Brien told the attendees at Variety's TV Summit that he now realizes that he had a unique perspective on the changing face of latenight talk shows.
"I was standing on a fault line," he said in his keynote conversation with Cynthia Littleton, Variety editor-in-chief, television. On one side was "traditional, old-time viewers"; on the other, "niche, social media driven, very vocal."
O'Brien admits he wasn't aware of Twitter at the time, but that all changed when the younger demographic "rose up in my defense," he said. "I was crippled by my old world view of checking overnight ratings."
During the blackout when he wasn't allowed to communicate with the press , he was allowed to use social media - "I sent out one tweet and sold out the comedy tour," he recalled. "I didn't even know what the show was, and we sold out venues across America. To this day, it's one of the most fun things I've ever done."
That crash course in social media revolutionized his perspective - and what would become his latenight show on TBS. "I now live in a world where some of my most ardent fans don't own televisions," he said. "At first I was upset by that, and then I realized I had this freedom to reach them in new ways."
British singer Marianne Faithfull has told an interviewer her former boyfriend accidentally killed iconic rock singer Jim Morrison of The Doors 43 years ago.
Morrison was found dead aged 27 in July 1971 in the bathroom of his Paris apartment, and no autopsy was performed on his body.
Faithfull told Mojo magazine that her then-boyfriend Jean de Breteuil, known as the heroin dealer to the stars, had accidentally killed Morrison by giving him drugs that were too strong.
The couple had travelled to Paris, and on their arrival de Breteuil said he had to visit Morrison's apartment. Faithfull stayed behind at their hotel.
"And he went to see Jim Morrison and killed him. I mean I'm sure it was an accident. Poor bastard. The smack (heroin) was too strong? Yeah. And he died... everybody connected to the death of this poor guy is dead now. Except me."

The piano-playing hitmaker was once regarded by advertisers as one of music's "untouchables" - artists like Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, Tom Petty and R.E.M. who shun the idea of aligning one of their popular tunes with an ad for a new kind of soup, sneaker or SUV. Now the artist sometimes known as "The Piano Man" has allowed his songs to be used in ads for The Gap ("Just The Way You Are," sung by his daughter, Alexa); Merrill Lynch's Bank of America ("My Life"); and New York State tourism ("New York State of Mind").
"An artist with the status of Billy Joel is iconic, and can help elevate a brand," said Paul Greco, director of music at JWT, the large ad agency owned by WPP Group of Britain.
The crowd of top rock and pop artists adverse to use of their work in commercials has thinned in recent years, as anyone who has heard The Who, The Clash, The Band and even Bob Dylan singing on behalf of everything from Jaguar to Diet Coke to Chobani yogurt can attest. With radio formats narrower and sales of traditional recording formats winnowed, commercial appearances represent a lucrative revenue stream at a time when others may slow to a trickle. Joel's interest in such stuff only spotlights how eager advertisers are to latch on to the world's most popular singles even when there is so much music already available to them.
That thinking seems to have changed. In 2012, Joel struck an agreement with Universal Music Publishing and its Rondor Music unit, with the idea that his songs "were just hanging around with nothing to do," he said in a statement. "I took good care of them, but now it's time for them to go out and take care of me for a change." Over the last 18 months, said Claire Mercuri, a spokeswoman for the singer, Rondor has secured approximately 127 different uses in the U.S. alone for Joel's songs. In the past, Joel did not have an outside party seeking opportunities.
Thrash metal band Megadeth and hip hop star CeeLo Green joined a growing list of entertainers Tuesday whose scheduled concerts in Israel have been canceled amid the Gaza crisis.
Los Angeles-based Megadeth was due to play in Tel Aviv on Wednesday, but on its website the group said it wasn't able to secure a guarantee that it could make it.
Organizers, meanwhile, scrubbed what would have been rapper Green's first-ever concert in Israel, on August 19 in Jerusalem, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Chart-toppers Lana Del Rey and Lady Gaga remain scheduled to perform in Tel Aviv on August 20 and September 13 respectively.
But others whose Israeli gigs have been canceled include Canadian rock icon Neil Young, the 1970s soft rock band America, the enduring 1990s boy band Backstreet Boys, and prog rock combo Kansas.

CNN America is being sued by a pair of plaintiffs who claim that correspondent Arwa Damon bit one of them and threatened both during a drunken altercation at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad.
In the suit, filed in New York Supreme Court on Monday, Charles Simons and Tracy Lamar claim that in July, Damon was "seriously intoxicated" at the embassy and became "unruly and violent."
At some point, the suit claims Damon bit Lamar, who was working as an EMT and a medic, and threatened both Lamar and Simons, who were attempting to provide medical assistance.
What's more, Damon - also named as a defendant in the suit, along with CNN Productions - has "a history of becoming intoxicated and then abusive" and "a history of and penchant for violence even when sober," the suit claims.
And perhaps worst of all, Damon allegedly pulled a "don't you know who I am," telling the plaintiffs that she was "a major reporter for CNN."

Air India has been forced to ground one of its planes after crew spotted rats scurrying around the cabin, The Times of India reported on Wednesday.
The plane was on its way from New Delhi to Calcutta when staff became aware of the infestation, the paper said.
No one at the airline was immediately available for comment, but an Air India official speaking on condition of anonymity said rats on planes were a "common phenomenon" worldwide and could "get in anywhere".
"They follow the catering vans into the plane when they smell the food," the official told AFP.

Scientists say a man-made "dead zone" in the Gulf of Mexico is as big as the state of Connecticut.
The zone, which at about 5,000 square miles (13,000 sq km) is the second largest in the world but still smaller than in previous years, is so named because it contains no oxygen, or too little, at the Gulf floor to support bottom-dwelling fish and shrimp.
The primary cause of the annual phenomenon is excess nutrient runoff from farms along the Mississippi River, which empties into the Gulf, said Gene Turner, a researcher at Louisiana State University's Coastal Ecology Institute.
The nutrients feed algae growth, which consumes oxygen when it works its way to the Gulf bottom, he said.

Global warming has been going on for so long that most people were not even born the last time the Earth was cooler than average in 1985 in a shift that is altering perceptions of a "normal" climate, scientists said.
Decades of climate change bring risks that people will accept higher temperatures, with more heatwaves, downpours and droughts, as normal and complicate government plans to do more to cut emissions of greenhouse gas emissions.
"Because the last three decades have seen such a significant rise in global and regional temperatures, most people under the age of 30 have not lived in a world without global warming," Michel Jarraud, Secretary-General of the U.N.'s World Meteorological Organization (WMO), told Reuters.
"People have to get used to continuous change in the climate," said Thomas Peterson, principal scientist at NOAA's National Climatic Data Center and president of the WMO Commission for Climatology.
Peterson said historical records of average temperatures, used by everyone from farmers planning crops to companies deciding how much insulation to install in new buildings, were no longer a reliable guide to the future.
Actress Marilyn Burns, perhaps best known as the heroine in the 1974 horror classic "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre," has died at her Houston-area home. She was 65.
Burns' career included roles in several horror films spanning 40 years, including last year's "Texas Chainsaw 3D." The 3-D version debuted at No. 1 at the box office when it was released, a testament to the continuing popularity of the franchise.
In the 1974 film, her character was the only one among a group of friends to escape the rampage of the chainsaw-wielding maniac Leatherface.
Burns appeared in another horror film, "Sacrament," that was released this year.
