• By the 1970s, African-American folk artist Clementine Hunter had become famous, although she had not started to paint until she was 53 years old. President Jimmy Carter sent her an invitation to attend an exhibition of her work in Washington, D.C., but Ms. Hunter had been born in 1886 and she did not like to travel. She said, "If Jimmy Carter wants to see me, he knows where I am. He can come here."
• American Impressionist artist Mary Cassatt was talking with some friends at an Impressionist exhibition in Paris when a woman turned to her and said, "But you are forgetting a foreign painter who [Edgar] Degas thinks is first rate." Ms. Cassatt asked, "Who is that?" The woman replied, "Mary Cassatt." Ms. Cassatt said, "Oh, nonsense," and the woman turned away, murmuring, "She's jealous."
• Berenice Abbot once exhibited her photographs in Brussels, but although they sold well, she didn't receive any money from them. The art dealer who had arranged the exhibition kept the money, telling her that he "did not have the courage to be poor."
Fathers
• Stanislaus Szulkalski was a Polish sculptor who always met his father for a walk every Sunday morning in a park in Chicago. One day, he arrived at the park to find a crowd around his father, who had died after being run over by a car. At the hospital, people asked what he wanted to do with the body. Mr. Szulkalski was poor, and he didn't have the money to bury his father. In addition, he was an artist who was too poor to pay for lessons to learn about human anatomy. So he solved two problems at the same time - he took his father's body home and dissected it, thus disposing of the body and learning about human anatomy. Later, people looked at his sculpture and told him that he certainly knew a lot about human anatomy - they also asked how he had come by that knowledge. Mr. Szulkalski always answered, "My father taught me."
• The father of American realist painter Andrew Wyeth was the eminent illustrator N.C. Wyeth, who trained his son to be able to follow his profession. As a young man, Andrew was given a book to illustrate, but he struggled with the assignment because the book was so badly written. His father knew why he was struggling, so he told him, "Andy, it's utterly ridiculous for you to do that book. Go to Maine and paint like hell! I will support you. You don't have to be an illustrator." Andrew followed his father's advice, winning his father's praise for the work he did. In fact, Andrew succeeded so well that soon a young painter asked N.C., "By God, are you the father of Andrew Wyeth?" N.C., of course, was disgusted by this question, preferring to be known for his own work.
• The father of choreographer Bella Lewitzky taught her the importance of having an art to practice. He worked an ordinary job, but when he came home, he painted. Ms. Lewitzky says, "He taught me that it didn't make a d*mn bit of difference what you did for a living, as long as you had something that rewarded your life." He also didn't feel that it was necessary to have an audience for his art because the act of creation was rewarding in itself. Bella and her sister used to steal their father's paintings - because if they didn't, he would paint another work of art on top of the one he had already created.
The O'Jays' first and only number-one hit single reached number one on both the R&B Singles and the Billboard Hot 100 in February and March 1973 respectively. What is the title of this song that served as the unofficial anthem of the old BartCop Treehouse?
"Love Train" is a hit single by The O'Jays, written by Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff. Released in 1972, it reached number one on both the R&B Singles and the Billboard Hot 100, in February and March 1973 respectively, number 9 on the UK Singles Chart and was certified gold by the RIAA. It was The O'Jays' first and only number-one record on the US pop chart.
"Love Train" entered the Hot 100's top 40 on January 27, 1973, the same day that the Paris Peace Accords were signed. The song's lyrics of unity mention a number of countries, including England, Russia, China, Egypt and Israel, as well as the continent of Africa.
Recorded at Philadelphia's Sigma Sound Studios, the house band MFSB provided the backing. Besides its release as a single, "Love Train" was the last song on The O'Jays' album Back Stabbers. The O'Jays' "Love Train" was a 2006 inductee into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Love Train. Love Train was a single off the Backstabbers album, and the single of the same name was also a hit. Backstabbers peaked at #3 in October 1972. Backstabbers was a warning about false friends who secretly want to steal the affections of a wife or girlfriend. Or at least boink them.
In 2016 The O'Jays had a lawyer send a cease and desist letter to Trump's campaign over the use of O'Jays' songs Love Train and For the Love of Money during the Republican convention. The letter was ignored because of course it was.
Deborah, the Master Gardener, wrote:
The only song I know by the O'Jays is "Love Train," which was a favorite with a certain crowd in my Jazzercise classes. So I"m sticking with that.

Song: "Southern Girl" from the album MEET ME AT THE RIVER
Artist: Dawn Landes
Artist Location: Nashville, Tennessee
Info: "Dawn Landes is a singer-songwriter with roots in Kentucky and NYC, now living in Nashville, TN. She has released multiple albums and her songs have been featured in commercials, popular films, and TV shows. Landes tours internationally and has performed with The Boston Pops, NYC Ballet, and at TED."
"Meet Me At The River is Landes' self-described 'Nashville record,' and she has assured its pedigree by enlisting the production skills of Fred Foster, the Country Music Hall of Fame member who played a pivotal role in the careers of Dolly Parton, Roy Orbison, and Kris Kristofferson. Two years ago, Landes reached out to Foster, and a four-hour visit to his Nashville home convinced both they were musical kindred spirits. With roots in both Louisville, Kentucky, and Branson, Missouri, Landes has been attracting ardent fans and critical acclaim since entering New York's music scene in 2000. Along the way, she has collaborated with such contemporaries as Sufjan Stevens, Justin Townes Earle, and Norah Jones, creating music for albums, movies, and television that crosses folk, rock, and alternative genres."
Price: $9 (USD) for 12-track album. Songs cannot be purchased separately.
This question has been bothering me since the president's militia invaded Portland, Oregon, U.S.A. and the moms/veterans decided to form a wall between the militia and the protestors: Can/will the Portland Mayor send the local police force to be a Wall of Blue between the militia and the protestors, i.e. can the city protect its citizens and their rights?

Two of America's longest-running game shows, Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! are heading back to the studio.
Both shows were hit by the COVID-19 production shutdown, but Deadline understands that both syndicated shows, which come from Sony Pictures Television and CBS Television Distribution, are set to start filming this week and next.
In Wheel of Fortune, Deadline understands that the wheel has been redesigned to provide proper social distancing between contestants.
Over on Jeopardy!, the stage has been slightly redesigned to allow for more space between the three contestant podiums. The contestants will also be at a safe distance from host Alex Trebek at his lectern.
Jeopardy!, which is set to film five episodes a day, two days a week, is expected to be back in the studio this week, while Wheel of Fortune is aiming to return to filming next week.
A triptych of a Mediterranean shipwreck donated by British street artist Banksy raised nearly $3 million on Tuesday at a Sotheby's auction held to raise funds for a Palestinian hospital in the West Bank.
The trio of highly stylised paintings by the mysterious artist shows orange life vests and an oar washed up on a rocky shore.
They first appeared in the Walled Off Hotel that Banksy helped set up in the Israeli-occupied city of Bethlehem in 2017.
The "Mediterranean Sea View 2017" was seen as Bansky's stern judgement on Europe's hesitant response to the migrant crisis that peaked some five years ago.
Tens of thousands are thought to have died as European countries on the Mediterranean and Aegean Seas turned away people fleeing violent conflicts across North Africa and the Middle East.
Garth Brooks has pulled himself from consideration for the Country Music Association (CMA) Awards' Entertainer of the Year prize, conceding "it's time for somebody else to hold that award."
Brooks won the prestigious prize in 2019 (beating out Carrie Underwood, Eric Church, Keith Urban and Chris Stapleton; watch video below), after having done so six previous times, in 2017, 2016, 1998, 1997, 1992 and 1991.
As reported by the Tennessean, Brooks in a Wednesday press conference explained that a social media exchange nudged him to step aside after aggregating so much kudos.
"There's one tweet in there that really stuck in my head," the Grammy-winning country legend shared. "It said, 'Hey, man. This guy, why doesn't he just step down (and leave) the entertainer for the next generation?'"
Barbie has released a new 2020 "Campaign Team" set, which features a black doll as a presidential candidate.
While the current US presidential nominees are both white men, toy company Mattel is hoping to nurture the dreams of young girls that they could one day become the first female president.
The other dolls are also all women, including a campaign manager, a fundraiser, and a voter.
The brand has also expanded its offering to include dolls with permanent disabilities, such as one with a gold prosthetic limb.
Now, Mattel offers Barbie dolls in five body types, 22 skin tones, 76 hair styles, 94 hair colours, and 13 eye colours.
Baghdad, Iraq, has seen high temperatures before, but not like this.
The city recorded its two hottest days ever Tuesday and Wednesday at 125 and 124 degrees, respectively. Per The Washington Post, the situation was exacerbated by the state electricity grid failing, prompting many residents to rely on generators to power their homes. And on Monday, when temperatures reached 123 degrees, two demonstrators protesting against the lack of electricity and basic services, were shot and killed by security forces.
Several other places throughout the Middle East have experienced extraordinary temperatures this week, as well. Beirut, Lebanon, set a record at 113.7 degrees, while Damascus, Syria, tied its previous high at 114.8 degrees. Additional locations broke previous records in Saudi Arabia and Iraq, the Post reports.
In Baghdad, temperatures are supposed to hover in the same record-setting area Thursday, before dropping slightly over the weekend and into next week. The Post notes extreme heat can happen randomly and naturally, but climate change has made such instances disproportionately more likely. Read more at The Washington Post.
Aaron Lojewski, who leads aurora sightseeing tours in Alaska, was lucky enough to photograph a "eruption" of brilliant pink light in the night skies one night in February.
The same perturbations of the Earth's magnetic field that lit up the sky for Lojewski's camera were also captured by seismometers on the ground, a team of researchers reports in the journal Seismological Research Letters.
By comparing data collected by all-sky cameras, magnetometers, and seismometers during three aurora events in 2019, University of Alaska Fairbanks seismologist Carl Tape and colleagues show that it's possible to match the striking display of lights with seismic signals, to observe the same phenomenon in different ways.
Researchers have known for a while that seismometers are sensitive to magnetic fluctuations-and have worked hard to find ways to shield their instruments against magnetic influence or to remove these unwanted signals from their seismic data. But the aurora study offers an example of how seismometers could be paired with other instruments to study these fluctuations.
The seismometers in the study are part of the USArray Transportable Array, a network of temporary seismometers placed across North America as part of the EarthScope project. The array in Alaska and western Canada was completed in the fall of 2017. The aurora paper is one of several included in an upcoming SRL focus section about EarthScope in Alaska and Canada.
The origin story of Stonehenge has baffled archaeologists for centuries. The mysterious monument, erected in two waves of flurried construction 5,000 and 4,500 years ago, on the UK's Salisbury Plain features two distinct types of stone slabs in half circles.
Researchers traced one stone type, the smaller bluestones, to a site in Wales. But the origin of Stonehenge's 30-foot (9-meter) sandstone boulders, called sarsens, remained an unsolved puzzle until now.
According to a study published Wednesday in the journal Science Advances, Stonehenge's builders dragged most of these 50,000-pound (22,700-kilogram) sarsens from a woodland area in Wiltshire.
The area, called West Woods, is more than 15 miles (25 kilometers) from the monument - "which is insane really if you think about it," David Nash, the lead author of the study, told Business Insider.
According to Nash's team's analysis of elements present in the rocks, 50 of those 52 sarsens share the same chemical makeup.
A self-portrait by Rembrandt sold for 14.5 million pounds ($18.7 million) at a Sotheby's virtual auction Tuesday - a record price for a self-portrait by the Dutch master, the auctioneer's said.
Sotheby's said that the top end of the art market was "in rude health" and that its new live-streamed auction format, introduced because of the coronavirus pandemic, brought in a total of $192.7 million Tuesday.
"Self portrait wearing a ruff and black hat," from 1632 when Rembrandt was aged 26, was sought by six bidders. It fell within the 12 to 16 million pounds estimate. The last self-portrait by Rembrandt to appear at auction was sold for 6.9 million pounds in 2003, Sotheby's added.
The top-selling item was Miró's "Peinture (Femme au chapeau rouge)" (Woman in a Red Hat) from 1927, which fetched 22.3 million pounds ($28.9 million). Sotheby's said the painting, which came to auction for the first time since 1966. set the highest sale price in Europe so far this year.
Five works sold for over $10 million. That included a bronze sculpture of a female figure by Alberto Giacometti, which fetched 10.7 million pounds ($13.8 million), doubling the estimated price.
