Mark Morford: Do not take a selfie with a rattlesnake (SF Gate)
Did you hear the one about the not very bright yoga girl who jumped down into the DC Metro subway tracks to snap a sassy handstand pose, oblivious to the extremely electrified, extremely deadly third rail, mere inches away?
Mark Morford: "A lion is not a chicken: Essential distinctions for the perplexed" (SF Gate)
One of my favorite snarling right-wing attacks, whenever I criticize Christianity as a whole or the Catholic church specifically - which is frequently, on both counts, for all manner of homophobia, sexual dread, constriction of human spirit, and so on - goes something like this: …
Morwenna Ferrier: Five anti-style lessons from Larry Clark's Kids (Guardian)
Clark's debauched and bleak portrayal of 1990s youth is 20 years old - and now watches like a 90-minute American Apparel advert, featuring a crop-haired Chloë Sevigny, unisexclothing, accidental branding and casual-cum-skater-wear.
A karat, when used with gold, is a unit of purity-- 24-karat gold is pure gold, but usually you mix gold with a metal like copper or silver to make jewelry (because pure gold is too soft). Each karat indicates 1/24th of the whole. So if a piece of jewelry is made of metal that is 18 parts gold and 6 parts copper, that is 18-karat gold.

24 Karat Gold is pure, though hard to digest, and makes a stunning bowel movement. Trying to connect to yesterday's trivia...Gaga made a video with some gold plated gay guys...urgh...so hard to do this without beer...but gotta go to work...stupid lottery!
P.S. Dale, congratulations on finally getting the "Full Titty" pictures posted! It's ART, dammit!
Do Da Dale of Diamond Hot Springs, Norhotcali responded:
24 karats of pure gold is what so many Greedheads in my County of El Dorado are constantly obsessed and pandering to hold and withhold. I could give a shit less about gold. My former business partner is a gold bug. He and wifey travel the world, seeking fortune at the World Gold Panning Championships each year. Next year it's going to be in Placerville. Another event to stay the fuck away from. Besides, panning for gold is just plain boring.
Oh Yeah, 101 today. Yes, Deborah, it's toasted to burnt up in the foothills today. SUCKS

Incoming "Daily Show" host Trevor Noah said politics and the media will remain targets of the program but the perspective will be distinctively his.
"The show still has its voice. It's just I'm at the helm taking things in a slightly different direction, but still trying to get to the same end place," Noah said Wednesday during a Q&A session with TV critics.
Outgoing host Jon Stewart is a middle-aged Jewish man from New Jersey, Noah said, while he's a 31-year-old half-black, half-white South African man who's spent about five years in America as he's pursued his comedy career.
The show is retaining its senior producing staff, Comedy Central has said and which channel executive Kent Alterman reaffirmed at the Television Critics Association session. The emphasis on stability makes sense: "Daily Show" with Stewart has been a cornerstone of the channel's success.

Two houses featured on the hit AMC-TV series "Breaking Bad" are up for sale in Albuquerque.
A mother-daughter realty team said this week they are helping sell the home where the fictitious Jesse Pinkman made methamphetamine.
The two-story, 3,500-square foot, 4-bedroom home in Albuquerque's Country Club area is listed for $1.6 million.
Susan C. Feil and Alicia Feil Peterson of Coldwell Banker Legacy list another house that appeared in the series finale in Albuquerque's North Valley for $2.65 million. That home is where the show's main character, Walter White, played by Bryan Cranston, threatened his former business partner with two fake assassins.
Universal Studios is donating a free vacation to all 42 seniors graduating from a New Hampshire high school after the class donated funds for a class trip to their principal, who was diagnosed with cancer.
The Caledonian Record reports the Class of 2015 at Bethlehem's Profile School gave $8,000 to Principal Courtney Vashaw in May. The students spent several years raising money for their class trip but decided it would be better off going to Vashaw to help with her medical treatments.
As word spread of the seniors' selfless act, other people donated funds to help the principal.
In return for the students' compassionate act Universal Studios is offering to pay for their airfare and hotel accommodations to take a trip to the Orlando, Florida, theme park in August.

Actress and singer Jane Birkin has asked Hermes to remove her name from one of the luxury goods maker's best-selling bags due to what she called "cruel" crocodile farming and slaughtering practices.
Birkin said she had signed actor Joaquin Phoenix's Mercy For Animals petition to "shed exotic skins from your wardrobe" in protest against the "millions of reptiles slaughtered each year and turned into shoes, handbags, belts and other accessories".
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA, said it had released a video, narrated by Phoenix and which Birkin had seen, showing how live reptiles were skinned or sawed open on farms that supplied luxury brands.
Hermes said the crocodile skins it sourced from a Texas farm in the video were not used for Birkin bags and stressed that it did not own that farm.
Critics of a suburban Denver school board that considered reviewing a U.S. history course to emphasize patriotism turned in signatures Tuesday to force a recall election for three conservative members responsible for the push.
The clash in Colorado's second-largest school district - and one of the state's fiercest political swing counties - has parents and educators citing a long list of complaints against the board members targeted for the recalls, including accusations of secret meetings and criticism over the new superintendent's pay.
A group of parents and educators called Jeffco United for Action are behind the recall effort and submitted dozens of boxes with signatures to the county clerk's office, which now has 15 days to review their validity.
To force a recall election, 15,000 valid signatures from Jefferson County voters are needed for each board member the group is trying to oust. For each member, the group got more than 30,000, said Wendy McCord, 47, one of the organizers.
"They really are driving away our teachers by showing a great amount of disrespect for them," she said. "They are dismissive of students and parents who have concerns and try to express them as well."

A dozen million-dollar contributors account for at least 10 percent of Jeb Bush's record-setting presidential fundraising haul.
The big-money boosters propelled Right to Rise, a super PAC dedicated to helping Bush win the Republican nomination, to its $103 million total in the first six month of the year. Separately, Bush's official campaign, limited to contributions of $2,700 or less per donor, raised $11.4 million. The super PAC faces no fundraising restrictions but cannot directly coordinate with Bush even as it spends money on his behalf.
The leading Bush donor, who gave $3 million, is Miguel "Mike" Fernandez, a billionaire health care investor in Miami. He's one of about 12 people who gave $1 million or more each to the super PAC.
Until Bush declared his candidacy on June 15, he traveled the country meeting with Right to Rise donors and speaking at its fundraising events. As an official candidate, he's now focused on raising money that his campaign will directly control. He left the super PAC in the hands of Mike Murphy, one of his most trusted advisers, who is based in Los Angeles.
A core group of 12 men and two women makes up the super PAC's executive committee - and shows Bush's appeal to some of the Republican Party's most influential and longest-serving presidential fundraisers. Each has either personally given $1 million, or helped raise at least that amount, for Right to Right.

In the age of Apple's CarPlay, a lot of cars on the road still have tape decks.
The average vehicle in the U.S. is now a record 11.5 years old, according to consulting firm IHS Automotive, a sign of the increased reliability of today's vehicles and the lingering impact of the sharp drop in new car sales during the recession.
Drivers behind the wheel of older cars aren't enjoying some of the latest advanced safety features or infotainment systems that effectively turn cars into cellphones on wheels. Then again, they don't have to worry about hackers finding their way in to the car's computer network through the cassette or CD player.
The average age of vehicles has been climbing steadily since IHS began tracking the number in 2002. As quality and reliability have improved, people have been holding on to their cars and trucks for longer. The average length of ownership for a new vehicle is now almost 6.5 years, IHS said. For a used vehicle, it's five years.

A neglected grove of date palms, their leaves long fallen, trunks drooping in the searing heat at the lowest point on earth, is the latest casualty of a dramatic rise in sinkholes wreaking havoc along the coast of the Dead Sea.
The Dead Sea is shrinking, and as its waters vanish at a rate of more than one meter a year, hundreds of sinkholes, some the size of a basketball court, some two storeys deep, are devouring land where the shoreline once stood.
The date trees line a section of a two-lane desert road - a main north-south artery that cuts through Israel and the Palestinian West Bank - that was shut down six months ago when a gaping hole opened up beneath the asphalt.
Once a rarity, hundreds of new sinkholes are appearing every year, and the rate is expected to rise. Officials have not come up with a figure for the extent of the damage, but power lines have been downed and caravans and bungalows engulfed. On at least one occasion, hikers were injured falling into one of the pits.

A 16-year-old French volunteer archaeologist has found an adult tooth dating back around 560,000 years in southwestern France, in what researchers hailed as a "major discovery" Tuesday.
"A large adult tooth -- we can't say if it was from a male or female -- was found during excavations of soil we know to be between 550,000 and 580,000 years old, because we used different dating methods," paleoanthropologist Amelie Viallet told AFP.
The tooth was found in the Arago cave near the village of Tautavel, one of the world's most important prehistoric sites which has been excavated for about 50 years.
It is also the site of the discovery of over 140 fossils belonging to Tautavel Man, an early hominid that lived an estimated 450,000 years ago.
For a long time the Heidelberg jaw -- including the chin and full set of lower teeth -- discovered in Germany in 1907 dating to around 600,000 years ago, was the oldest fossil of human ancestors in western Europe.
