• It seems very unlikely to me that being a drug addict has any advantages whatsoever; however, Ron Asheton, guitarist for Iggy and the Stooges, once received a telephone call from an IRS agent who told him that the band owed a lot of money in back taxes. The story - which is most likely untrue - goes that Mr. Asheton told the IRS agent the unfortunately true statement, "Hey, look, man. We're all drug addicts. We don't know where the money is." The IRS agent supposedly said, "Oh," hung up the telephone, and did not press them for payment of back taxes. (The truth is probably that Iggy and the Stooges didn't owe any back taxes; they were far from being a very commercially successful band.)
• When blues music lessened in popularity in the United States, blues musicians such as Howlin' Wolf started touring in Europe, including communist countries. During one tour, Howlin' Wolf was paid half in American money and half in the local currency, and he was warned to be sure to spend the foreign money as he would not be able to exchange it for American money. Also, Howlin' Wolf once said that he didn't want to buy anything and therefore he wanted to donate his foreign currency to the local YMCA. Unfortunately, the German promoter who had put together the tour was forced to explain that communist countries, due to government suppression of religion, didn't have any YMCAs.
• T-Bone Burnett has made music over 40 years, and he has found much success, including a 2002 Grammy win for Album of the Year for O Brother, Where Art Thou? Of course, his life wasn't always easy. In 1970, he became a starving artist in Los Angeles. T-Bone says, "My roommate was a wedding musician, and he'd bring home wedding cake and we'd eat cake for three or four days." Even though O Brother, Where Art Thou? sold 7 million copies, he is not a commercial artist, and he does not make a ton of money. He says, "Making money isn't an appropriate goal for making music. If you want to print money, buy a printing press, not a guitar. The guitar is the wrong tool for that."
• Blues singer Bessie Smith could be earthy, something that occasionally cost her. She once interrupted one of her songs during an audition for Black Swan Records by saying, "Hold on! Let me spit!" Horrified, the president of Black Swan Records told her that she had failed the audition. Of course, being earthy does not mean you can't sing the blues; if anything, it probably makes you a better blues singer. Musician Bix Beiderbecke, who was white but did not let that stop him from being an artist in jazz music, once threw his salary for an entire week up on stage so Bessie would sing a few more songs.
• Singer Sarah Brightman was happily married for a while to composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, but they divorced, and now they have a good relationship as a divorced couple. In the divorce settlement, Ms. Brightman was awarded £6 million. Of course, Ms. Brightman has done rather well as an actress in Cats and Phantom of the Opera and as a recording artist, so one day she asked her ex-husband about the £6 million, "Look, I'm doing all right. Would you like it back?" He replied, "No, you went through all of that - you keep it."
Born Milton Supman, this American comedian, actor, and radio/television personality, worked with the puppets White Fang ("The Biggest and Meanest Dog in the USA"), Black Tooth ("The Biggest and Sweetest Dog in the USA"), and Pookie the Lion. By what name is this man who created quite a stir on January 1, 1965, known professionally?
Written by a school principal in Arkansas with a passion for history, using a melody based on the American fiddle tune "The 8th of January," this song was ranked by Billboard as the No. 1 song for 1959. What is the title of this song?
"The Battle of New Orleans" is a song written by Jimmy Driftwood. The song describes the Battle of New Orleans from the perspective of an American soldier; the song tells the tale of the battle with a light tone and provides a rather comical version of what actually happened at the battle. It has been recorded by many artists, but the singer most often associated with this song is Johnny Horton. His version scored number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1959. Billboard ranked it as the No. 1 song for 1959, it was very popular with teenagers in the late 50s/early 60s in an era mostly dominated by rock and roll music.
In Billboard magazine's rankings of the top songs in the first 50 years of the Billboard Hot 100 chart, "The Battle of New Orleans" was ranked as the 28th song overall and the number-one country music song to appear on the chart.
The melody is based on a well-known American fiddle tune "The 8th of January," which was the date of the Battle of New Orleans. Jimmy Driftwood, a school principal in Arkansas with a passion for history, set an account of the battle to this music in an attempt to get students interested in learning history. It seemed to work, and Driftwood became well known in the region for his historical songs. He was "discovered" in the late 1950s by Don Warden, and eventually was given a recording contract by RCA, for whom he recorded 12 songs in 1958, including "The Battle of New Orleans."

Dave replied:
Battle of New Orleans. As far as the actual battle, it tragically occurred 15 days after the US and Britain signed the Treaty of Ghent, which ended the War of 1812. But in those days before telegraph lines the news didn't reach the combatants before the fight. General Andrew Jackson, who ardently hated the British for what happened to him and his family during the Revolutionary War, was very happy to lead the defense of New Orleans to pay the British back. Unfortunately the battle made the Indian hating Jackson a national hero and he was twice elected to the presidency. Soon after Jackson's death, one of his slaves was asked if he thought Jackson was in heaven? He answered, "If he wants in there, who is going to stop him?"

CBS will honor comedy legend Carl Reiner with a colorized hourlong special. The Dick Van Dyke Show - Now In Living Color! A Special Tribute To Carl Reiner, will feature two colorized back-to-back classic episodes of the beloved 1960s series, Friday, July 3 at 8 pm on CBS.
The special features the episode "Coast to Coast Big Mouth," in which Laura Petrie blurts out a top secret on a national television quiz show, revealing that comedian Alan Brady wears a toupee. The episode won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series in 1966. In the other episode, "October Eve", a painting of Laura returns to haunt her when, despite her having posed fully clothed, the artist (played by Reiner) takes the liberty of "undraping" her.
Both episodes, written by Bill Persky and San Denoff, aired on CBS in two separate The Dick Van Dyke Show - Now In Living Color! specials executive produced by Reiner on Dec. 11, 2016 and Dec. 22, 2017, respectively. The episodes were hand-picked by Reiner to be included. As series creator and co-star, Reiner personally supervised the original colorization of the episodes.
Turner Classic Movies also will pay tribute to Reiner on July 28 with a marathon of his movies such as Oh God!, Where's Poppa? and All of Me, among others.
John Prine has received a very special posthumous honor. The late country folk legend has been named the first honorary poet laureate of Illinois, his home state.
"John Prine leaves behind an unparalleled musical legacy and was beloved by family and millions of fans who hope that in Heaven he finds Paradise waitin' just as he longed for," comments Governor J.B. Pritzker in a statement.
Prine is the first Illinoisan to receive the honorary designation, which commemorates his and celebrates his writing and musical contributions.
"John had a great respect for Writers of all kinds. He regarded Poets as being among those whose work carried weight, relevance and elevated craft," comments Fiona Whelan Prine, the celebrated singer and songwriter's widow. "It is such an honor for me, our sons, and the entire Prine family to acknowledge that our beloved John will be named an Honorary Poet Laureate of the State of Illinois. Thank you, Gov. Pritzker, for this wonderful recognition."
The unprecedented accolade closely follows the release of Prine's final single, "I Remember Everything," which opened at No. 1 on the Rock Digital Song Sales tally dated June 27, for his first leader on a Billboard chart.
Tom Hanks has a word to two to say to those not wearing protective masks amid the coronavirus pandemic in the US.
63-year-old Hanks, and his wife Rita Wilson, contracted the virus in March, as he was about to begin working on the new Baz Luhrmann movie in Australia.
He told People: "There's really only three things we can do in order to get to tomorrow: Wear a mask, social distance, wash our hands.
"Those things are so simple, so easy, if anybody cannot find it in themselves to practice those three very basic things -- I just think shame on you.
"Don't be a p***k, get on with it, do your part. It's very basic.
Music and sports - arguably the two forms of mainstream entertainment hardest hit by the pandemic lockdown - will get some succor on Sunday when ESPN will air its first-ever concert: the Eagles' "Live from the Forum MMXVIII."
For those whose roman-numeral-translation skills are lacking, the concert dates from 2018, when the group was on an extensive North American tour that found core members Don Henley, Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmit accompanied by Vince Gill and Deacon Frey; the latter is the son of late Eagles cofounder Glenn Frey. The group arrived at the Forum in Los Angeles for three sold-out concerts on September 12, 14, and 15, with highlights from all three shows compiled into the new 26-song live album and concert film that premieres on ESPN Sunday night, presented by longtime Eagles fan, ESPN's Chris Berman (who presumably will not say that the group "could… go… all… the… way!").
The Russian Arctic set record temperatures in June that sparked abnormal tundra fires, the head of Russia's weather service said Tuesday, blaming climate change for the "fantastical" anomalies.
Russia's northern territories, including parts of Yakutia region which borders the Arctic ocean, have faced a heat wave in recent weeks, and villages in the remote tundra are battling wildfires with some districts declaring a state of emergency.
He noted one record in particular in the Arctic town of Verkhoyansk, where temperatures reached 38 degrees Celsius (100 degrees Fahrenheit)on June 17.
"That is a fantastical degree," Vilfand said at a press conference, noting that Verkhoyansk previously set the record for the lowest temperature with minus 67.8 degrees Celsius.
Vilfand said the trend of hotter temperatures and sunnier weather was caused by climate change and a change in atmospheric circulation, with polar anticyclones -- phenomena that bring sunny skies -- becoming more frequent.
Nigeria is "saddened" by the sale of two sculptures belonging to the south-eastern Igbo community, an official from the Nigerian National Commission for Museums and Monuments, has said.
A prominent art historian had called on the renowned auction house, Christie's, to cancel the sale.
Prof Chika Okeke-Agulu told the BBC the two objects were "looted" from shrines during the civil war in the late 1960s.
The items were sold for just under $240,000 (£195,000) in Paris.
The wooden objects about 1.5 metres high, one male and one female, represent deities from the Igbo community, their hands face upwards waiting to receive sacrifices and gifts.
The 2020 Austin City Limits Festival has been canceled due to ongoing concerns about the spread of COVID-19.
The festival, which typically takes place in early fall in Austin's Zilker Park, released a statement on its website saying, "We would have loved to put on another memorable show this year, however, with the uncertainty surrounding the current situation in Texas, this decision is the only responsible solution. The health and safety of our fans, artists, partners, staff and the entire Austin community remains our highest priority."
Along with announcing this year's cancellation, ACL Fest also put forward dates for next year's event: The first weekend will take place October 1st through 3rd, and the second will be held October 8th through 10th. Those who already purchased tickets to this year's festival will be able to use them in 2021, though refunds will be made available to those who can't attend.
The decision to call off ACL Fest 2020 comes as Texas grapples with a huge spike in coronavirus cases following its attempt to re-open after several months of lockdown. It also follows the cancellations of Coachella and Bonnaroo, which had moved their usual spring dates to the fall, hoping, at the time, that conditions would have improved enough for large scale outdoor festivals to take place safely. But even when those festivals were rescheduled, health experts had been warning that it was unlikely any such events would be able to take place at all in 2020.
Beavis and Butt-Head are back, moving from a Gen X to Gen Z world and from MTV to Comedy Central. An expansive deal Comedy Central has inked with series creator Mike Judge and 3 Arts Entertainment calls for a reimagined version of MTV's seminal, Gen X-defining adult animated sitcom Beavis and Butt-Head, which has received a two-season order, as well as additional spinoffs and specials.
Under the pact, Judge will write, produce and provide voice-over for both famous characters in the revival with meta-themes relatable to both new and old fans - Gen X parents and their Gen Z kids.
The deal with Judge is part of a major programming shift at Comedy Central toward ramping up adult animated content and building an original animated slate around South Park. Beavis and Butt-Head will join recently ordered animated series Jodie, a spinoff of MTV's iconic Daria, with Tracee Ellis Ross voicing the main character and executive producing.
Beavis and Butt-Head and Jodie are part of the same animated universe as Daria was a spinoff from Beavis and Butt-Head. Comedy Central and MTV both are part of ViacomCBS' Entertainment & Youth Group run by Chris McCarthy.
