To Meet Chirac in Paris
Bono In Paris
Irish rock star Bono and French President Jacques Chirac will meet Thursday to talk about Africa, the developing world and an upcoming summit of industrialized nations.
The U2 singer and activist, who recently accompanied U.S. Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill on a 12-day tour of Africa to press for debt relief and more aid, is expected to
meet the French leader at the presidential Elysee Palace, Chirac's office said.
A new development plan for Africa will be a chief focus of the June 26-27 Group of Eight meeting in Canada. That program offers a package of trade and aid help for Africa,
coupled with assistance in ending civil wars and improving governance across the continent.

Bing Is Father
Liz Hurley
DNA tests have proved that Hollywood producer Steve Bing is the father of actress Liz Hurley's baby son, Damian, Bing's spokeswoman said Wednesday.
The test results were disclosed Wednesday morning at a hearing in the Family Division of the High Court in London, ending months of speculation in
England and the United States about who had fathered the boy.
Lawyers for both parties were at the High Court awaiting the result. Bing was in the United States and did not immediately issue a statement.
Hurley, who has always maintained that Bing was the father, could now receive millions of dollars in child support. The 35-year-old Californian film
producer is believed to be heir to a $400 million property fortune. Bing had previously declared that he would provide Damian with financial support
and play a part in his upbringing if he was proved to be the father.
He began legal proceedings in April, two weeks after Damian was born — a move that Hurley branded "astonishing."
Hurley has kept a relatively low profile since Damian's birth on April 4 at the private Portland Hospital in central London.
After leaving there, she headed for Sir Elton John's secluded mansion in Windsor where she kept Damian away from the prying eyes of the media.

Pooh Hits the Fan
Walt Disney Co
The Walt Disney Co. was dealt a potential multimillion-dollar setback Tuesday in its long-running litigation over royalties on "Winnie the Pooh" characters.
In a tentative ruling, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Ernest M. Hiroshige threw out substantial parts of a report from a court-appointed auditor and ruled that accounting methods
proposed by plaintiff Stephen Slesinger Inc. -- the company that licenses Pooh characters to Disney -- should be used instead. He also ordered a new independent accountant to be
appointed who will conduct another audit.
Slesinger is suing Disney over its contention that it has been underpaid on royalties from Pooh character merchandise such as stuffed toys and lunchboxes. Slesinger also contends,
and Disney denies, that it is owed royalties on videocassette sales and computer programs that use Pooh characters.
Hiroshige, in his 28-page ruling, castigated the auditors, saying their report on whether Disney properly paid royalties does not comply with generally accepted accounting principles,
applied inconsistent and unfair standards and involved pervasive absence of documentation.
As part of the ruling, Hiroshige decreed that 12.5% of Disney merchandise sales since 1983 in various categories will be assumed to come from Pooh products.
Neither side in the case was willing to put a dollar figure on what the tentative ruling, if made final, would mean for Slesinger royalties. People close to the case in the past have
speculated that Slesinger could be due another $35 million from underpaid royalties and as much as $300 million if videocassettes and computer products are included.

Bachelor Party
The Edge
Instead of strippers, the bachelor party for U2 guitarist The Edge featured supermodels. Christy Turlington and Helena Christensen joined Bono, Adam Clayton,
Larry Mullen for The Edge's bon voyage to bachelorhood at Danube and his life-to-be with Morleigh Steinberg, the belly dancer he met nearly 10 years ago. The
David Bouley-owned Viennese eatery served the rockers a nine-course meal capped with asparagus ice cream and gallons of Austrian wine. After dessert, Bono
toasted the kitchen with a long speech.

Man With A Valid Point
Damon Wayans
It's "The Bernie Mac Show" versus "My Wife and Kids," and Damon Wayans doesn't like it at all.
The 42-year-old star of "My Wife and Kids" is furious that the only major broadcast series featuring two-parent black families will be competing head-to-head in the 8 p.m. Wednesday slot.
Wayans told the Los Angeles Times that "the networks should not be playing checkers with two shows about African-American families that are working."
Wayans said, "It's hard enough trying to put together one successful show with an African-American family. Now there are two. It's divide and conquer."

Not Properly Attired
Rod Stewart
Veteran pop star Rod Stewart got his marching orders Wednesday when he headed for the hallowed Royal Enclosure at Royal Ascot in a pale blue summer suit and white shoes.
As every dedicated follower of fashion knows at Britain's most elegant race meeting, no gentleman gets into the enclosure without the obligatory morning coat and top hat.
Ascot spokesman Nick Smith said: "You won't get into the enclosure wearing a suit. Maybe he got lost and didn't know where he was going."
On Tuesday's opening day at the meeting, it was the turn of the eagle-eyed monarch to maintain sartorial standards.
Queen Elizabeth was quick to enforce the strict dress code when she spotted two casually dressed members of a BBC Television crew in the paddock.
For British High Society, the Ascot meeting is the fashion event of the year, with the ladies parading in full finery and gentlemen sporting elegant top hats
and tails in the Royal enclosure.
The Ascot dress code for the grandstand firmly states: "Gentlemen are encouraged to wear a jacket and tie or a suit. Please note that jeans, shorts and trainers are not permitted.."

Big Dog Watch Continues
Bill Clinton
Bill Clinton is enjoying popularity now that the scandalous side of his administration is fading in memory.
Take the other day, when the former president spoke to the right-leaning Council on Foreign Relations. They had to move the 11 a.m. session to the Yale Club to fit in
the more than 500 heavy-hitters who turned out.
Council chair Pete Peterson set the tone by welcoming Clinton as "the greatest policy wonk of us all" and said Bubba knew more about policy than any man he'd ever met.
Clinton spoke for 50 minutes and took questions for another 20. He was very careful not to level any kind of criticism against the Bush administration but did say
that any move to overthrow or rub out Saddam Hussein (which Dubya is desperate to do) should wait until the Palestinian situation has been worked out, or at least
diffused. He also called for the modern-day equivalent of the Marshall Plan, something that "will make us more friends than enemies" in the Middle East.

ABC Show Violates the ADA
'Millionaire'
A federal appeals court has reinstated a lawsuit claiming ABC discriminates against disabled people who want to become contestants on "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire."
A lower court judge had concluded that the Americans With Disabilities Act isn't broad enough to cover the process of qualifying by touch-tone telephone.
But the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta decided Tuesday that the lawsuit contained a valid claim that the touch-tone system violates the ADA.
Disability rights advocates sued the network and the show's producer for using a telephone system that excludes hearing-impaired people and those who can't operate touch-tone phones.

Stage Musical in Works
Peggy Lee
"Sisterella" creator Larry Hart has been contracted by Las Vegas-based Dick Foster Prods. to develop a musical based on the life of late singer/songwriter/actress Peggy Lee.
Tentatively titled "Is That All There Is?," the show will be a stage production with a variety format. It will tell the story of Lee's life, and feature renditions of such classics
as "Fever" and the title tune. Plans are for the tuner to start touring in May to Australia and London before embarking on a nationwide U.S. tour.
Dick Foster Prods. has formed a joint venture with the family and estate of Peggy Lee to develop this production, which will be the only authorized stage production on Lee, who
died in January, aged 81. Foster is planning for a known star to play Lee in her later years and will cast a fresh face for the younger Lee.

Ratchets Up War of Words vs. Sony
Michael Jackson
As Michael Jackson went trolling in the streets of London last weekend seeking popular support for his escalating war of words with label Sony Music, the mood inside the Sony camp
was one of increasing bafflement.
Jackson, who reportedly led an entourage on a whirlwind tour of Blighty, announced to fans in London's Leicester Square that he only had to deliver a few more new tracks for a
greatest-hits record and he would be free to leave Sony for good.
But sources close to the label group claim that the mercurial pop superstar's contract was scheduled to expire after the hits release anyway, and that Sony is looking forward
to wishing him a hearty "bon voyage."
Industry insiders have also floated the theory that Jackson is bad-mouthing the label's support of the record in an effort to explain the tepid sales of "Invincible," and thereby
secure the best-possible terms on a new record deal.
Jackson shifted his PR battle into high gear last week, when he enlisted the help of Al Sharpton and Johnny Cochran to frame his dispute with Sony as part of the battle to bolster
artists' rights in the music industry.

Teams Up with Victoria's Secret
CBS
CBS is betting that a parade of lingerie-clad models will do for its ratings what push-up bras do for cleavage.
The network has clinched a deal to broadcast a prime-time special next fall built around the annual fashion show presented by lingerie retailer Victoria's Secret, a CBS spokesman said on Wednesday.
A similar show on ABC last November drew strong ratings but sparked protests from feminist groups and viewer complaints to the Federal Communications Commission.
Details of the program are still being worked out, but plans call for a one-hour hosted telecast from New York featuring performances by major musical acts, a network spokesman said.
No date for the special has been set, but CBS reportedly is slating the show for the November ratings "sweeps."

NBC Buys Rights
BBC's 'Coupling'
NBC has bought the BBC show "Coupling" and plans to remake it with American actors as a replacement for its top comedy "Friends."
"Coupling," a British Broadcasting Corp. sitcom starring Jack Davenport and Sarah Alexander, has been described in England as a frank and funny account of love and lust among a group of thirtysomethings.
"NBC said 'Friends' was coming to an end and they saw `Coupling' as 'Friends' with sex," Beryl Vertue told The London Times for Wednesday's editions. "They were very enthusiastic about the show
and said they didn't want to tone it down."
Ben Silverman, the producer overseeing the project for NBC, was quoted as saying: "We think 'Coupling' would be a perfect show for the fans of 'Friends.' It's kind of a next-generation sitcom. It is really honest and edgy."
The Times said "Coupling" will be remade it Los Angeles with a cast of American actors.

Pleads No Contest to Charges
Marilyn Manson
Shock rocker Marilyn Manson, who was charged with sexual misconduct for allegedly gyrating against a security guard at a concert, pleaded no contest Wednesday to being a disorderly person and assault and battery.
Clarkston District Judge Gerald McNally ordered Manson, whose name is Brian Warner, to pay fines and costs totaling $4,000. A no contest plea is not an admission of guilt.
The guard was working on the stage during Manson's July 30, 2001 performance at the DTE Energy Music Theatre when Manson allegedly rubbed his genitals against his neck.
Afterward, Manson signed autographs for several fans outside the courtroom.
