Andrew Tobias: I Feel Giddy. Oh, So Giddy . . .
… don't get me started on Chris Christy needlessly spending $12 million to hold New Jersey's special election to fill the late Frank Lautenberg's Senate seat three weeks before the regularly-scheduled November election, just so all those folks likely to turn out for Cory Booker (who is African American) will not likely turn out again three weeks later to vote against Chris Christie and his Republican state legislative colleagues. To a Republican, that's $12 million in taxpayer funds well spent.

Perhaps the cries of martyrdom greeting almost every plan to raise government revenues can be replaced with a more dispassionate discussion: What do we want government to do, and how can we best pay for it? As always, no one has to like paying taxes.
"Fans Share Their Favorite Henry Rollins Memories" (LA Weekly)
"As I type this, I'm listening to Rain's incredible late '80s EP La Vache Qui Rit, a record that Rollins recommended to me when we got chatting about DC Hardcore last year after one of his spoken word shows. That is perhaps Rollins' greatest gift to us all - using his well-earned reputation and credibility to let other artists through the door that he opened. I couldn't imagine not having Rain in my music library now." - Joel Gausten
"What the Hell is 'Hygge'?" (fathomaway.com)
A love of or need for hygge is an important part of the Danish psyche. Hygge is usually inadequately translated as "coziness." This is too simplistic: coziness relates to physical surroundings - a jersey can be cozy, or a warm bed - whereas hygge has more to do with people's behavior towards each other. It is the art of creating intimacy: a sense of comradeship, conviviality, and contentment rolled into one.

I believe that the definition of definition is reinvention. To not be like your parents. To not be like your friends. To be yourself. Completely.
Lucy Mangan: "Are You There, God? It's Me, Margaret by Judy Blume" (Guardian)
All together now, "We must, we must, we must increase our bust!" I don't know whether to curse Judy Blume for giving me false hope or gratefully acknowledge the fact that, false or not, it was frequently only the faintly flickering hope that a bosom would one day arrive that kept me hacking on through the fetid swamp of adolescence.
Benjamin David "Benny" Goodman (May 30, 1909 - June 13, 1986) was an American jazz and swing musician, clarinetist and bandleader; known as the "King of Swing".
In the mid-1930s, Benny Goodman led one of the most popular musical groups in America. His January 16, 1938 concert at Carnegie Hall in New York City is described by critic Bruce Eder as "the single most important jazz or popular music concert in history: jazz's 'coming out' party to the world of 'respectable' music."
Goodman's bands launched the careers of many major names in jazz, and during an era of segregation, he also led one of the first well-known racially integrated jazz groups. Goodman continued to perform to nearly the end of his life, while exploring an interest in classical music.

We have a local radio show, "Big Band Sounds" which airs on Saturday nights. Just heard, "Stomping at the Savoy" (circa 1935) last week! So nostalgic...
PS: Benny was also credited as being the, 'Father of the Jitterbug.' When I was a teen, and into, 'Rock 'n Roll,' my mother would always say, "Turn down that Jitterbug music!" I would just roll my eyes, like my teenage gs does nowadays. So un cool...LOL!

I knew a young woman in '77 who was totally into the '30's - '40's swing and art deco thing. Hair, clothing, house decor - everything. She coulda stepped off a movie set with her place being that set... Seriously... Quite the anachronism... She introduced me to Benny and Glenn Miller etc. I got to like "Swing" because of her. But, I could never dance as well as she could to it. She knew all the moves, I'm tellin' ya... She sure put me "In the Mood", though.

Former Beatles drummer Ringo Starr put snapshots of his musical and creative life on display in a new exhibit, "Ringo: Peace & Love," which opened on Tuesday at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles.
Starr, 72, was on hand at the exhibit, which offers an in-depth look at his career as he rose to fame with The Beatles.
Highlights include Starr's Ludwig drum kit, used during The Beatles' appearances on "The Ed Sullivan Show," and the outfit he wore during the era of the "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" album, between 1966 and 1967.
Nearly 50 years after The Beatles first arrived in the United States, Starr said he keeps busy and is working on adapting the Beatles' song "Octopus's Garden" into a children's picture book.
He is also releasing an e-book titled "Photograph" exclusively on Apple's iBookstore on Wednesday, which will lift the lid on a collection of previously unseen photographs of the Fab Four from his personal collection.
The country's book-buyers are reading up on being watched.
Sales for dystopian classics such as George Orwell's "1984" and Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World" have been strong since news broke last week that the U.S. government had vast surveillance programs targeting phones and Internet records.
Several editions of Orwell's "1984," about an all-seeing government, were among Amazon.com's top 200 sellers as of Wednesday morning. Huxley's story of a mindless future ranked No. 210 and was out of stock.
A perennial favorite of futuristic horror, Ray Bradbury's "Fahrenheit 451," was ranked No. 75.
There is a line from the first season of "Portlandia" that quickly became the show's trademark: "Portland is a city where young people go to retire."
That's not the case for the creators and two stars of the show - Portlander Carrie Brownstein and Fred Armisen of "Saturday Night Live" fame. They are always looking for new ways to keep the show from getting stale.
Season Three, which ended this past March, was driven less by short sketches and more by narrative and character development.
The cable channel IFC said Wednesday it's picking up the show for two more seasons. They will premiere early next year and in 2015. Brownstein says the show will continue on the longer-narrative path, with more exploration of the dark side.

MTV, VH1 and CMT are going back to their roots on the Fourth of July.
The networks said Wednesday they will throw a "Music Independence Day" party that day, showing videos and giving exposure to artists at a time it can be hard for them to break through to a larger audience.
Each of the networks began their lives as music video channels but shifted to other, more lucrative programming through the years. Music programming is limited now - a wee hours dance party on MTV, the "Jump Start" morning show on VH1, a weekend Hot 20 on the country-oriented CMT. Much of their music content now is concentrated online or on digital channels like VH1 Classic.
MTV on July Fourth will have hours devoted to particular music genres, highlighting artists like Justin Timberlake, Bruno Mars and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. VH1 will show videos and performances from the likes of Alicia Keys, Pink and Maroon 5, and telecast a live concert that night from Philadelphia featuring the Roots and John Mayer. CMT will offer a "barbecue playlist" of artists like the Avett Brothers, Carrie Underwood and Luke Bryan.
Lawyers for a Fox News reporter who is being asked to name her sources for a story on last year's Colorado theater shooting urged a New York appeals court Wednesday to quash a subpoena that requires her to appear at a hearing in the state.
The lawyers for New York City-based reporter Jana Winter made the arguments in New York state's Appellate Division in Manhattan, saying the state's shield laws protect journalists' sources. An attorney for theater shooting suspect James Holmes said that the issue wasn't about press freedoms, but about the legal process, and that the subpoena requiring her to appear should be upheld.
Winter was subpoenaed in connection with a Colorado hearing about a leak concerning a notebook Holmes mailed to a psychiatrist before the attack at a movie theater in Aurora, Colo., in July. Media reports have said the notebook contains drawings depicting violence. Winter reported on the notebook, citing law-enforcement sources who were unnamed.
On Wednesday, Holmes attorney Daniel Arshack argued to the five-judge panel that the issue was one of credibility. He said that a number of law enforcement officers had been asked whether they were the source of the leak, and that none had taken responsibility for it.

In private remarks to the leadership of a key Latin American church group, Pope Francis lamented that a "gay lobby" was at work at the Vatican.
It was an apparent reference to allegations in the Italian media that blackmail was taking place within the Vatican against high-ranking prelates who are gay.
The Latin American and Caribbean Confederation of Religious - the regional organization for priests and nuns of religious orders - confirmed Tuesday that its leaders had written a synthesis of Francis' remarks after their June 6 audience. The group, known by its Spanish acronym CLAR, said it was greatly distressed that the document had been published and apologized to the pope.
In the days leading up to Pope Benedict XVI's Feb. 28 resignation, Italian media were rife with reports of a "gay lobby" influencing papal decision-making and Vatican policy through blackmail, and suggestions that the scandal had led in part to Benedict's decision to resign.
The unsourced reports, in the Rome daily La Repubblica and the news magazine Panorama, said details of the scandal were laid out in the secret dossier prepared for Benedict by three trusted cardinals who investigated the leaks of papal documents last year. Benedict left the dossier for Francis.
Walt Disney Co's TV sports network, ESPN, said it will shut its 3D cable channel in the United States, ending a three-year experiment after sports fans failed to embrace the technology in their homes.
ESPN launched the 3D cable channel in 2010 and will close the channel by the end of the year, said ESPN spokeswoman Katina Arnold. It presented 3D broadcasts of college football games and the Masters golf tournament, among other offerings.
Despite declining costs for 3D televisions and widespread use of 3D in movies, consumers have not rushed to bring the technology into their homes.
ESPN 3D was commanding monthly fees on average of $2.79 per subscriber from cable and satellite operators this year, among the highest for a cable channel, according to research firm SNL Kagan. Pay TV providers also pay $5.54 on average for the flagship ESPN network.
Soledad O'Brien is joining fellow "Today" show alum Bryant Gumbel at HBO's "Real Sports."
HBO said Wednesday that O'Brien will be a reporter on the monthly magazine show, which is anchored by Gumbel. Her first story, due this month, is about war veterans who use martial arts to help cope with post-traumatic stress disorder.
She most recently was a morning-show host on CNN, but the news network has given the program an overhaul that will debut next week. O'Brien was replaced by the anchor team of Kate Balduan and Chris Cuomo.
O'Brien's experience with sports has been limited, although she did play rugby while studying at Harvard. She will be a visiting fellow at Harvard's Graduate School of Education during the next school year.
A rare 75-year-old comic book featuring the debut of Superman found in a Minnesota home's wall fetched $175,000 at auction, comic book seller Comicconnect.com said on Wednesday.
The identity of the buyer in the online auction, which ended Tuesday, was not disclosed. The comic book, Action Comics No. 1 from June 1938, was the first appearance of the all-American superhero by writer Jerry Siegel and illustrator Joe Shuster.
It had been estimated to sell for about $100,000, Comicconnect.com CEO Stephen Fishler said, adding that there are about 100 remaining copies of the 250,000 original copies.
The book's condition was graded 1.5 out of 10 because its back cover was accidentally ripped shortly after it was found.
A mint condition copy of Action Comics No. 1 would command about $3 million, Fishler said. A 9.5 graded copy of Action Comics No. 1 sold for $2.16 million in 2011.

Andy Warhol's art doesn't often conjure warm and fuzzy images - but a proposed tribute to him just might.
An arts group wants to cover a downtown Pittsburgh bridge named for Warhol with knitted blankets.
Allegheny County Council must sign off on the plan. But if it goes forward, the Fiberarts Guild of Pittsburgh will use machine-knitted blankets to cover the bridge's towering superstructure while individual blankets knitted by more than 1,200 volunteers will be used to cover its walkways.
The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review hopes to cover the bridge in mid-August and leave the blankets in place for about a month.
After the blankets are removed, they'll be washed and distributed to homeless shelters, nursing homes and animal shelters.
Some people believe that spreadsheets are a necessary evil for calculating budgets, doing expense reports and organizing lists, but Japanese artist Tatsuo Horiuchi uses spreadsheets to create works of art. The 73-year-old uses AutoShapes in Excel to design traditional-looking Japanese art that is both beautiful to look at and intricately detailed.
Horiuchi began making his unique art using spreadsheets 10 years ago. Before retiring, he said he would see his co-workers in the office using Excel to make detailed graphs, and he thought to himself, "I could probably draw with that. Graphics software is expensive, but Excel comes pre-installed in most computers."
For those of you who are reading this right now and looking at Horiuchi's art and thinking, "No way! How in the world could someone create that kind of ornate artwork using Excel?" you can download a file yourself and take a look at how each individual cell appears.
People first began taking notice of Horiuchi's work in 2006 after he entered an Excel AutoShape Art Contest. His artwork far surpassed other people's entries, and the judges quickly realized that what Horiuchi was able to do was superior. He won first place in that competition.
