A Response
Right-wing columnist slanders dead musicians
I wrote the following response to an article written by Christopher Caldwell, an arch-conservative columnist for the arch-conservative webzine The Weekly Standard. Here's the link:
www.weeklystandard.com/content/public/articles/000/000/001/331fekzo.asp
Here's my response - you'll get the gist of what he said just by reading it:
To: editor@weeklystandard.com
To the Editor,
I have respond to Christopher Caldwell's offensive and arrogant missive, dated June 8th.
I'm 35 years old, and know who both R. Kelly and Aaliyah are.
R. Kelly may have sung "Feelin' on your Booty" (and may be a pedophile), but he also wrote "I believe I can fly" -- a song that anyone would know if they'd seen Space Jam - or left their house. Aaliyah was not only a great singer, but a critically acclaimed actress who costarred in "Romeo Must Die." Selena was already a huge star in all of Latin America and had just had her first hit single in the US when she was murdered by her assistant before she could even tour the US. Aaliyah was set to star in the next two sequels of the Matrix and had the #2 album in America when incompetence killed her at the age of 22. Lisa Lopes, whom I'm sure Mr. Caldwell hasn't heard of either, was recently killed in Honduras while on one of her several relief missions there. She was a member of TLC, the highest selling female act in history (yes, they beat the Supremes) -- she is survived by an adopted daughter she raised out of abject poverty.
It absolutely FROSTS me that a supposed journalist can have an irreverent and even slyly humorous take on the MURDER and DEATH of two young women. Even if they didn't have such spectacular promise and weren't internationally famous, it's just plain WRONG. Christopher Caldwell should be ashamed of himself.
As for Mr. Caldwell not knowing who these artists are, he's just dating himself rather than making any kind of real point. To say that R. Kelly, Aaliyah, and Selena are known only to a "subculture of aficionados," he is really saying that they're unknown to some folks who are middle-aged and white. So what. ALL the albums from all three of these performers are platinum, if not double or triple platinum. A cursory 5 minute Internet search revealed that, as well as no less than 20 different fansites for EACH of these people. That makes Mr. Caldwell's comments not only offensive and irresponsible, but grossly incompetent from a journalistic standpoint. Furthermore, I can't help but hear a twinge of racism in Mr. Caldwell's comments. I urge you to have Mr. Caldwell apologize for this installment of his column; If he can't bring himself to apologize to the millions of people who bought their records, then perhaps he can at least apologize to the victims families.
Sincerely,
Nina Eliza S

Snarky Gossip
'The Dreaded C-Word'
Calvin Klein used the dreaded c-word to insult Joan Rivers and her daughter, Melissa, at a star-studded dinner for the AIDS charity AMFAR. Klein was dining with Elton John
and his boyfriend David Furnish, Elizabeth Taylor and Bianca Jagger at the Cannes Film Festival when Joan and Melissa came over to pay their respects, reports online gossip
column Chic Happens. Still smarting over a nasty crack Joan made about him many years ago, Klein snapped, "You're nothing but an old c- - -, you c- - -!" The elder Rivers didn't
hear it, but Melissa relayed it to her. "Excuse me," Joan said to Calvin, "but Melissa said you just called me a c- - -." Klein replied, "I sure did, and your daughter's an even
uglier c- - -!" Klein then bolted up from the table to leave, but hooked his ankle on the chair and fell over sideways in front of the whole dining room. "Calvin was a little tipsy,"
Rivers confirmed. "He fell over and we all picked him up. He apologized, and we kissed and made up. It was a lovefest. It was very showbiz - Elton John helping him up while Elizabeth
Taylor watched! It was very funny."

'Playboy After Dark'
Playboy founder Hugh Hefner will host a revival of "Playboy After Dark," the 1969 latenight variety series that showcased jazz musicians, comics and soul singers in a fake penthouse apartment.
The series, which would contemporize the laid-back cocktail partylike atmosphere of the original, is being shopped to cable networks by Fox-based Prometheus Entertainment. The project
is being developed as a weekly hourlong series or as a series of backdoor specials. Initial production will take place at the Playboy Mansion in Holmby Hills.
"'Playboy After Dark' is one of the jewels in Playboy's crown and was considered an important cornerstone in Hugh Hefner's legacy," producer Kevin Burns told Daily Variety. "It
was groundbreaking, in terms of being interracial, intergenerational and in terms of its format."
'Playboy After Dark'
Spent a lot of Saturday nights, while in high school, babysitting. There are 3 shows that I remember from that time frame.
One was a local 'scary movie' package, out of Pittsburgh (channel 11) - with 'Chilly Billy' (Bill Cardile). Such a fabulous cheese-fest!
(Way back then, the only local movie of note was George Romero's original 'Night Of The Living Dead', where Bill Cardile had a role as one of the Pittsburgh reporters, quite appropriately.)
The 2nd show I remember was 'Joe Pyne'. As I remember, he was sort of to the right of Paul Harvey, had a worse 'ferret-on-his-head' than Trent Lott, and a wooden leg, so he always looked like he was listing (appropriately) to the right.
The 3rd show is 'Playboy After Dark'. Years later, worked at The Playboy Channel, and got a big
kick out of seeing the old shows again.

Vacation Prank
A Washington, D.C., couple is suing the Hard Rock Hotel and MTV, claiming invasion of privacy during a reality TV show prank.
James and Laurie Ryan are suing the Las Vegas resort and the network for $10 million over the TV series "Harassment." Their case was moved early
this month from Superior Court in Los Angeles to federal court in Washington, D.C.
The lawsuit said the couple believed they were going to be spending a vacation at the hotel in January. Instead, the Ryans were given a room
with hidden cameras that captured their shock as they discovered what appeared to be a mutilated corpse in the bathroom.
When they tried to leave the room, two actors posing as security guards forced them back inside until Ashton Kutcher, the show's host and co-producer,
emerged to reveal the gag.
Kutcher has described the show in interviews as a "Guerrilla Candid Camera."

'Scooby-Doo'
In the new film "Scooby-Doo," a psychedelically painted van marked "The Mystery Machine" sits beside a beach while smoke wafts through the sunhatch and voices from
inside groan, "Primo!" and "Talk about toasted!"
That may seem suspicious, but the next shot reveals it's just the talking dog Scooby-Doo and Shaggy, his beatnik human pal, grilling burgers.
The van scene is one of the film's few references to what many adult fans of the Hanna-Barbera series consider a wink-and-nod subtext to Scooby and Shaggy, whose gangly
walk, relentless munchies and dazed manner seem to suggest a marijuana high.
As for the other members of the "Scooby-Doo" gang of cartoon sleuths, fans have long speculated that Velma — the no-nonsense brains of the operation — is a lesbian, and
that Fred and Daphne, the respective beefcake and cheesecake of the team, frequently searched for clues together to partake in carnal exploits.
The cast and filmmakers said they filmed many joking allusions to those inferences but ultimately decided to keep "Scooby-Doo" an innocent children's film rather than aim for older audiences.
The original script featured a scene in which Fred gazed lustfully at Daphne while she leaned over him to load luggage into an
airplane's overhead bin. The camera then panned to Velma, who was ogling her too.
Later, Velma and Daphne shared a comic kiss, Gosnell said. The filmmakers say they believe those jokes would have hampered the
story and could have imperiled the PG rating that the studio wanted and got.

Feuding With Label
Michael Jackson
When Michael Jackson's "Invincible" was released last fall, it was accompanied by all the hype and hoopla expected for a Jackson project.
There were the 30th anniversary tribute concerts to himself, an all-star video for the first single, "You Rock My World," and a No. 1 debut on the charts.
But soon after its release, "Invincible" became invisible. Eight months later, the album has dropped off the charts, produced just one video and sold just 2 million
copies in the United States — great sales for many stars but disappointing for the King of Pop.
That evaporation of an album by one of the best-selling artists ever has led to an ugly battle between Jackson and his longtime label, Sony Music. While some industry
insiders blame the album's demise on Jackson's waning star power, his fans have alleged that Sony failed to promote it.
His fans have suggested that Sony wanted the album to fail. The theory goes that Jackson owes the label tens of millions of dollars in outstanding loans, and if
he failed to make enough to pay them off, Sony might try to take over the joint-publishing company it owns with him, Sony/ATV Music. That company owns the
lucrative Beatles catalog that Jackson bought in the 1980s.

Neil Young Bio
It took biographer Jimmy McDonough eight years and 300 interviews before he finished his 800-page tome on rock 'n' roll legend Neil Young.
Then, in 1998, his troubles began.
Young, who had agreed to the authorized biography in 1991, decided he no longer wanted the book published and withdrew his authorization.
"When I first interviewed Young, it was easy as pie," recalled McDonough, author of "Shakey: Neil Young's Biography," in an interview at publisher Random House's office in Toronto. But he said
the Canadian-born musician, famous for songs like "Sugar Mountain" and "The Needle and The Damage Done," became increasingly more difficult to speak to as time went by.
"Shakey" paints Young as a lone musician ruthlessly pursuing his craft. In his wake are a series of bandmates, often awash in a sea of drugs and broken contracts.

Spam
The 78 McDonald's restaurants in Hawaii are adding a new menu item that's as much an American icon as the burger chain itself — Spam.
More than 3,000 portions of low-sodium Spam, scrambled egg and rice were served in a single day during a test run of the meal, according to Melanie Okazaki, McDonald's local marketing manager.
Hawaii residents consume 5.3 million cans of Hormel Foods' processed Spam luncheon meat each year, four times the national average. A favorite local variation is Spam sushi.
McDonald's officials will decide Aug. 1 if the canned meat will find a permanent place on the Hawaii menu.
The Spam breakfast joins other local specialties at McDonald's in Hawaii, including a local noodle soup called saimin and a Portuguese sausage breakfast.

Dead Issue in Wisconsin
Grateful Dead
A reunion of the Grateful Dead described as the first formal concert by the group since leader Jerry Garcia's 1995 death has been vetoed by Wisconsin officials who feared they couldn't handle
the quarter million fans the event might draw.
The Walworth County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously at a Tuesday night meeting against allowing the concert which had been planned for Aug. 3-4 at Alpine Valley, a ski area and
concert venue between Chicago and Milwaukee.
Some residents opposed to the event were still angry about the last Dead concert there 13 years ago, when the group and its thousands of followers played the southern Wisconsin site.
"I had to run outside to stop a guy from urinating in my yard," said one woman who declined to give her name. "Another day, someone was butt naked in the backyard taking a shower under my garden hose."
Event organizer Clear Channel Entertainment of San Antonio, Texas, part of Clear Channel Communications, had presented elaborate plans for parking, security and medical support. A spokeswoman
for Clear Channel said the company will decide within several days whether to appeal.

Nude Performance Artist
'Baby Vamp'
A teen-age performance artist known as "Baby Vamp" sent shock waves through Chile this week by strolling naked down city streets in the conservative South American nation.
Sporting only sunglasses and a backpack, 17-year-old high school student Lucia Fernanda Flores went nude on short outings in the city center as part of a visual arts project.
Luizo Vega, organizer of the event said the so-called "Baby Vamp" project was a playful jab at Chile, aimed at provoking debate in this bastion of conservative Catholicism.
"The response of people on the street has been mostly positive. People applaud, they shout 'Good one!' and other encouragement. The response has been about 80 percent
positive and 20 percent negative," Vega told Reuters.
Chile is the most socially conservative nation in Latin America. It is the only democracy in the Western Hemisphere where divorce is illegal.

Oreo Cookies
Dozens of children gobbled up Oreo cookies and race car driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. drove an Oreo-decorated car down a New York City street on Wednesday to celebrate the cookie's 90th birthday.
Second graders from a nearby school sang along with Oreo commercials shown during a party held at Chelsea Market, the home of the bakery on New York City's West Side where Oreos were
first made in 1912. Oreo biscotti and strawberries dipped in Oreo cookies attracted older eaters, but kids were happy with the original.
The first Oreos were made by National Biscuit Company, which later shortened its name to Nabisco and is now part of Kraft Foods Inc.
New versions of Oreos are boosting sales, but the original chocolate-flavored wafer and cream-filled Oreo still accounts for about half of the brand's overall business
and its sales are growing quickly, said Archie Mack, an Oreo business director, adding the brand could reach $1 billion in sales this year.

Fighting Blockbuster in Court
Small Video Stores
Mom-and-pop video store operators prepared to battle Blockbuster Inc. in federal court on Wednesday, alleging the video rental giant conspired with movie studios to drive independent stores out of business.
Blockbuster, the world's biggest video rental chain, rejects the plaintiffs' charges that it broke U.S. antitrust laws by signing deals with the studios that enabled it to obtain large
numbers of hot new video releases at low prices unavailable to independent retailers.
Harry Munsinger, lead attorney for the three independent video store plaintiffs in the case, said the so-called revenue-sharing deals that Blockbuster signed around 1997 marked the end of free and fair
competition in the video rental industry.
Newly released tapes of hit movies generate the bulk of profits in the video rental business, but studios typically charge high prices for copies of hit movies, limiting the number of copies that rental stores can stock on their shelves.
Blockbuster's response was to negotiate revenue-sharing deals with movie studios and distributors, obtaining more copies of hot new releases at a lower price in exchange for sharing some of the rental revenues with the studios.

No Charges To Be Filed
Pearl Jam
No charges will be filed against the organizers of an outdoor rock festival in Denmark during which nine young men died two years ago, a state prosecutor said after the conclusion of a second inquiry.
Last year, the government ordered the inquiry into why the organizers of the Roskilde festival didn't stop a Pearl Jam concert on June 30, 2000, when they realized the crowd of up to 50,000 people
was being pressed against the stage. Nine people died and 43 were injured.
The investigation also was to establish who had the authority to stop the concert at Roskilde, 25 miles west of the capital, Copenhagen.
An initial report published in December 2000 concluded that "a chain of unfortunate circumstances" led to the deaths after poor sound in the back prompted fans to surge forward.
"No charges will be filed against any people in this case," state prosecutor Erik Merlung said in a statement Tuesday. "There is no reason to presume that something punishable has been done."
