• Jazz musician Ornette Coleman keeps trying new things. When Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam ate dinner with him, Mr. Coleman poured red wine into his sorbet and asked, "Ever had red wine and raspberry sorbet?" After Mr. Vedder answered, "No," Mr. Coleman said, "Neither have I." According to Mr. Vedder, "I think that sums him up. He might be in his late 70s, but that was probably the sixth or seventh new thing he tried that day."
• While on his way to Dallas, Texas, during the days of Jim Crow, conductor Pierre Monteux stopped at a restaurant, where the waitress told him that she could not serve him. When Mr. Monteux asked why not, she said, "Because, sir, this restaurant is for colored folk." Mr. Monteux replied, "But we are colored, my dear. We are PINK!" Breakfast was served, and it was excellent.
• George Handel, composer of Messiah and the "Hallelujah Chorus," was a bit of a glutton. He once ordered a dinner for three at an inn. The food was slow in coming, so he asked the innkeeper when he would be served. The innkeeper said that he would serve the food when the company arrived. Handel replied, "I am the company."
• Being a musician can be a hard job. Early in their career, Johnny Cash and his band used to carry shotguns while traveling by car to and from gigs. That way, if they saw ducks or rabbits or raccoons, aka live "fixin's," as they were driving, they could stop and shoot dinner.
• One of gospel singer Mahalia Jackson's business ventures was a restaurant that served "glori-fried chicken."
First introduced in the mid-1960s, this style of women's footwear, originally white, low-heeled, and mid-calf in height, were further popularized with a song performed by Nancy Sinatra. What is the name of this women's fashion necessity of that era?
"Ode to Billie Joe" is a song written and recorded by Bobbie Gentry, a singer-songwriter from Chickasaw County, Mississippi. The single, released on July 10, 1967, was a number-one hit in the US within three weeks of release and a big international seller. Billboard ranked the record as the No. 3 song of the year. The song notably kept the Diana Ross & the Supremes number "Reflections" from becoming the group's 11th number-one single in the U.S. The recording remained on the Billboard chart for 20 weeks and was the Number 1 song for four weeks.
The song begins on June 3 with the narrator, her brother and her father returning from farming chores to the family house for dinner. After cautioning them about tracking in dirt, Mama says that she "got some news this mornin' from Choctaw Ridge" that "Billie Joe McAllister jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge". At the dinner table, the father seems unmoved, commenting, "Billie Joe never had a lick o' sense", before asking for the biscuits and adding that there's "five more acres in the lower forty, I've got to plow." Her brother is intrigued ("I saw him at the sawmill yesterday ... And now you tell me Billie Joe has jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge"), but not enough to be distracted from the lunchtime meal. He recalls a prank that he, "Tom", and Billie Joe played on the narrator.
The only person affected is the narrator; one reviewer commented on "the narrator's family's emotional distance, impassive and unmoved by Billie Joe's death". Her mother notices her change of mood following the news ("Child, what's happened to your appetite? I've been cookin' all mornin' and you haven't touched a single bite"). The mother shares the news that a local preacher visited earlier and, as an aside, adds that he mentioned seeing someone looking much like the narrator and Billie Joe "throwin' somethin' off the Tallahatchie Bridge". In the song's final verse, a year has passed. The narrator's brother has married Becky Thompson and has moved to another town ("bought a store in Tupelo"). The father died from a viral infection and the mother is despondent ("Mama doesn't seem to want to do much of anything"). The narrator likewise remains privately affected: she often visits Choctaw Ridge collecting flowers to "drop them into the muddy water off the Tallahatchie Bridge."

Billie Joe McAllister. Ode to Billie Jo was the song. They played the hell out of that song on AM radio back in 1967. And it seems that Bobbie Gentry hit all the TV variety shows of that era and lip synced the song dozens of times. So yeah, my 11 year old self heard it enough, more than enough. It was never clear to anybody but Bobbie Gentry what the song was about, except somebody jumped off a bridge.
In 1976 a film Ode to Billy Joe was released, produced and directed by Max Baer Jr. (Jethro). The film's screenplay was "inspired" by the song, and as was typical of a Max Baer Jr. film, it had a small budget ($1.1 million) but made big money at the box office ($27 million). Max Baer Jr. is a lot smarter than Jethro.

Themes of racial and social injustice, war, the current world and even an upside-down one are key in the winners of the 2020 Peabody Awards, which on Wednesday unveiled its annual list of the 30 most compelling and empowering stories released in broadcasting and digital media in 2019.
PBS with its documentary series POV and Indepenedent Lens led the way placing seven shows on the list, and also saw its Frontline, along with Fox's The Simpsons, take this year's Institutional Awards. HBO and Netflix scored four wins each. First-time winners include Apple TV+ for Dickinson and OWN for Tarell Alvin McCraney's David Makes Man.
The Peabody Awards are based at the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia. In addition to its annual winners, the group said today it is partnering with PBS on a roundtable program with all 10 directors of this year's winning documentaries, set to air June 23.

The Grammy Awards will cease using the term "urban" in its awards and language as part of the latest round of annual changes to its rules and guidelines, the Recording Academy announced Wednesday (June 10). Along with the changes, which include updates to the Best New Artist category, Latin, R&B and Rap Fields, Nominations Review Committees, the Recording Academy will make the Grammy Awards rules and guidelines book publicly available for the first time - and available here.
The moves are part of a larger effort to advance a "completely new, and very transparent and transformed Recording Academy," interim president and CEO Harvey Mason jr. tells Variety. "It's all part of what I hope will be a and a new chapter in our history. We're listening to and learning from our partners and constituents and stakeholders; we're trying to make sure we're able to pivot and change and adapt; and we want to be really inclusive."
Best Urban Contemporary Album has been renamed Best Progressive R&B Album to appropriately categorize and describe this subgenre. This change includes a more accurate definition to describe the merit or characteristics of music compositions or performances themselves within the genre of R&B.
Best Rap/Sung Performance has been renamed Best Melodic Rap Performance to represent the inclusivity of the growing hybrid performance trends within the rap genre. The expanded category is defined as follows:
Rage Against the Machine's music has always had a left-wing bent, with much of their lyrics targeting corporate America, cultural imperialism and government oppression.
But a number of right-wing conservative fans have only just realised the radical undercurrent of their music.
One Twitter user addressed the rock band: "I use to be a fan until your political opinions come out. Music is my sanctuary and the last thing I want to hear is political b******t when i'm listening to music.
Band member Tom Morello responded: "Scott!! What music of mine were you a fan of that DIDN'T contain "political BS"? I need to know so I can delete it from the catalog".
A number of fans took to social media to voice their amusement at how someone could not have noticed the political undercurrent of Rage Against the Machine's music.
A&E has canceled its flagship series and one of the highest-rated shows on basic cable. A week after Live P.D. was pulled in the wake of George Floyd's death, the reality series' hiatus has been made permanent.
The decision was made jointly by A&E and MGM's Big Fish Entertainment, which produces the show.
Ultimately, both the network and the production company on Wednesday came to the conclusion that there was currently no path forward for the show in its current form as protesters and politicians are calling for a police reform following the death of Floyd while restrained by a cop during arrest.
This week, Austin outlets reported on the March 2019 death of Javier Ambler during a police stop, which was allegedly captured by the Live P.D. crew but the video has been destroyed.
Airing Friday and Saturday nights from 9 PM-12 AM, Live P.D. was ad-supported cable's #1 show on Fridays and Saturdays in 2019 and has helped A&E become a leading cable network. The series had risen to the top spots in all cable during the pandemic when live sports were suspended, drawing a total of about 3 million viewers per weekend.
The rightwing Fox "News" host Tucker Carlson (R-Sock Puppet) launched an unprecedented attack on the beloved Sesame Street puppet Elmo on Tuesday night, after Elmo and his father, Louie, discussed racism in a one-off town hall episode on rival channel CNN.
Carlson, who has described white supremacy in America as a "hoax", was upset by the children's show, which addressed the anti-racism protests that are taking place across the US. Rather than educating viewers on systemic racism, Sesame Street, Carlson said, was telling its audience: "America is a very bad place."
In the hour-long episode of the children's show - a collaboration with CNN which is available online - Elmo's father, Louie, explained that protesters "want to end racism". Hundreds of thousands of people have attended anti-racism demonstrations since George Floyd died at the hands of Minneapolis police.
The show, which also featured the CNN contributor Van Jones and a number of children asking questions about racism, was praised for the effectiveness of its message, but Carlson had a different interpretation, and suggested the two puppets had a different, more sinister, motivation for decrying the treatment of minorities.
"Got that, Bobby? America is a very bad place and it's your fault, so no matter what happens, no matter what they do to you when you grow up, you have no right to complain," Carlson said.
Social media users and Change.org supporters are calling for Disney's "Splash Mountain" water ride to be re-themed amid civil unrest across the nation.
The ride is based on Disney's 1946 film "Song of the South," featuring characters such as Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox and Brer Bear, and has been criticized for its depiction of black people.
According to Deadline, former Disney Executive Chairman Bob Iger previously confirmed "Song of the South" will not be featured on streaming service Disney+, even with an "outdated cultural depictions" disclaimer.
Iger affirmed the movie is "not appropriate in today's world."
Splash Mountain is featured at Disneyland, Disney World and Tokyo Disneyland.
A miniature bird sculpted out of burnt bone in China around 13,500 years ago is the oldest known figurine from East Asia, according to researchers who discovered it in a refuse heap near an archaeological site.
The carefully crafted depiction of a songbird on a pedestal -- smaller than an almond kernel -- was found among burnt animal remains and fragments of ceramics at Lingjing in north central Henan province, an area thought to have been home to some of China's earliest civilisations.
The figurine is the "oldest known carving from East Asia", said Francesco D'Errico of the University of Bordeaux, who co-authored the research published in the journal PLOS One on Wednesday.
The tiny carving was discovered by lead author Zhanyang Li of Shandong University, who has been excavating parts of the Lingjing site since 2005.
Digging in the area had already revealed 11 distinct layers, ranging in age from 120,000 years ago to the Bronze Age.
So-called 'phantom ships' thought to be sailing in wide circles near San Francisco were actually thousands of miles away, according to expert analysis.
Bjorn Bergman, who had been examining tracking data for commercial ships, spotted the strange patterns throughout 2019.
Mr Bergman noticed that nine ships were making circular movements around Point Reyes, northwest of San Francisco, at the same time.
According to Mr Bergman, who monitors shipping vessels across the world's oceans with the environmental watchdog Global Fishing Watch, the ships were providing "fractured" signals.
He found that the vessels broadcasting circular GPS signals near the US were actually in waters near Norway, Libya, Malaysia, and Russia.
