Mark Morford: "Bald eagles for breakfast: The Texas GOP stays adorably insane" (SF Gate)
The official Texas GOP platform is, it must be said, sort of glorious in its flagrant disregard for anything resembling coherence or grown-up thinking. All the classic hits are still here, with a few fresh flourishes for 2016, mostly having to do with - can you guess? - Muslims. And public restrooms. Obvs.

LIZETTE ALVAREZ: A Republican Congresswoman Has Personal Stake in Transgender Debate (NY Times)
The day Rodrigo Heng-Lehtinen told his prominent parents about his new gender identity, he did so in a letter that he left on their bed. Then he grabbed a packed bag and, unsure of whether he would be welcomed back, went to a friend's house to see if his family would love him or leave him.
Corduroy is a textile composed of twisted fibers that, when woven, lie parallel (similar to twill) to one another to form the cloth's distinct pattern, a "cord." Modern corduroy is most commonly composed of tufted cords, sometimes exhibiting a channel (bare to the base fabric) between the tufts. Corduroy is, in essence, a ridged form of velvet.

Based on what it looks like, I'd say lint, short, unspun fibers.

Nothing goes better with saddle shoes than corduroy pants! Am I right? And I just learned that corduroy is made from...Twisted Velvet! Which would be a GREAT name for a band. But do you know where velvet comes from? If you answered BUGS, you're RIGHT! Just like silk, corduroy owes it's existence to "worms", woolly worms to be exact! But unlike silk, which is made from weaving the strands of the cocoon, corduroy is made from the twisted corpses of the dear little woolly worms themselves! That's right! Billions and billions of cute little woolly worms twisted into a warm, durable fabric for all your apparel needs. They died for your corduroy! So think about THAT before you mock someone's fashion sense, you monster!
Dale of Diamondy Springs, Nor not ass hot Cali answered:
Take your velvet and ridge it…strange…I haven't thought about, let alone worn corduroy clothing in 50 years…back that ass up…
Patriot Act NSA Spying Unconstitutional Section 215 National Security Letters Must End
My name is Marc Perkel and I have decided to announce that I will not comply with the so called "Patriot Act" laws requiring me to disclose information about my customers. If I receive a national security letter I will immediately photograph it, post it online everywhere I can, and then make a video of me burning it. I will then await my arrest. If you want to put me in jail then come get me mother fucker.
Thought I'd get to some reader mail, but a sinus headache is sending me to bed early.

A central Illinois community center where Richard Pryor made his first performance as a child has received $19,000 from the late comedian.
The (Peoria) Journal Star reports that the George Washington Carver Community Center in Peoria is getting the money from the state's unclaimed cash program. The comedian had donated $100,000 to the facility and the leftover amount somehow was left to languish in a bank account that was turned over to the state treasurer's office in 1991.
Pryor died in 2005. It's not clear when the original donation was made

Donald Trump's use of Queen's classic "We Are The Champions" on Tuesday will not continue, according to the group's guitarist, Brian May.
Rolling Stone reported that May responded quickly on the band's website after fans alerted him regarding Trump using the song before giving his victory speech following last night's uncontested Republican Party primaries.
"We certainly have not approved this use of WATC," May wrote. "I will make sure we take what steps we can to dissociate ourselves from Donald Trump's unsavoury campaign."
May also posted a statement on his website saying that he had received "an avalanche of complaints" regarding Trump.
"I can confirm that permission to use the track was neither sought nor given," May stated. "We are taking advice on what steps we can take to ensure this use does not continue. Regardless of our views on Mr. Trump's platform, it has always been against our policy to allow Queen music to be used as a political campaigning tool."
You'll soon see four new names on the periodic table of the elements, including three that honor Moscow, Japan and Tennessee.
The names are among four recommended Wednesday by an international scientific group. The fourth is named for a Russian scientist.
The four elements, known now by their numbers, completed the seventh row of the periodic table when the chemistry organization verified their discoveries last December.
Tennessee is the second U.S. state to be recognized with an element; California was the first. Element names can come from places, mythology, names of scientists or traits of the element. Other examples: americium, einsteinium and titanium.

Axl Rose: one of the world's most recognizable musicians, and also, one of its sweatiest.
Back in 2010, a slightly heavier and proudly moist Axl Rose was photographed while on tour. Out of those controversial photos, the inarguably beautiful "fax Axl" meme was born. Now, the artist has demanded Google to take them down and issued multiple DMCA takedown requests.
Axl is arguing that the photos, taken by Canadian photographer Boris Minkevich and originally published in the Winnipeg Free Press, legally belong to him. Rose claims that the photographer was supposed to sign a release form upon entering the concert, Minkevich can't remember if he signed one.
The photographer has further alleged that photos were taken off Winnipeg Free Press'website without his consent.
Rose has not stated a reason for taking down these photos, but celebrities in his position are known for asking sites to take unflattering photos down. Beyoncé had a similar request of Buzzfeed in 2013 when photos emerged of her looking "too fierce" (as if there was such a thing).
A former CIA agent will be extradited to Italy for her involvement in the kidnapping of an Egyptian cleric under the U.S. "extraordinary rendition" program, after a last appeal to Portuguese authorities failed, she said on Wednesday.
Sabrina De Sousa, a joint U.S.-Portuguese citizen, was one of 26 people convicted in absentia on charges of snatching Hassan Mustafa Osama Nasr from a street in Milan in 2003 and taking him to be questioned in Egypt.
The case focused attention at the time on the treatment of suspects moved around the world for interrogation in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and strained relations between Washington and Rome.
De Sousa was arrested in Portugal in October at the request of Italian prosecutors, who want her to serve a six-year sentence. De Sousa lodged an appeal against the extradition in January but Portugal's constitutional court has now rejected it.
Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin and his wife Katie Hunt pose by art displayed in the governor's ceremonial office in Montpelier, Vt., Wednesday June 8, 2016. Hunt, an artist who has been married to the Democratic governor since December, says the art is meant to be a satirical look at their lives. Hunt did the sculptures as part of her senior thesis at Mount Holyoke College. The display is expected to be in the Statehouse for two weeks.

An Arizona jury on Wednesday convicted a founder of the Minuteman border-watch group of molesting one young girl, but it acquitted him of engaging in sexual conduct with another.
Christopher Allen Simcox was found guilty on charges that he molested a 5-year-old girl and showed her pornography. He was acquitted of the more serious charges that he engaged in sexual conduct with a 6-year-old girl.
A molestation conviction carries a sentence of 10 to 24 years in prison. Simcox, 55, is scheduled to be sentenced on July 5.
Prosecutors alleged that Simcox molested the younger girl and engaged in sexual conduct with the older girl during an 11-month period ending in May 2013.
His arrest in 2013 came after his career as an advocate for tougher immigration policies had fizzled.

Want to buy a piece of horror history? "The Amityville Horror" house on Long Island is listed for $850,000. It's the site of a tragic mass murder in 1974, when a man shot his parents and four siblings. His lawyers said voices in the house made him do it, but that's where reality ends and "The Amityville Hoax" begins, according to locals and listing agent Gerald O'Neill of Coldwell Banker Harbor Light.
They give little credence to the tales told in a best-selling book and two movies, all called 'The Amityville Horror,' based on the supposed haunting of a family who lived there briefly after the murders.
"There've been four owners since the murders, and none of them ran out of the house screaming, and there were no strange experiences," O'Neill said. His own brother lived there for a decade with his family.
The two-story home with dormers is recognizable from the book cover and from the movie, although its Dutch Colonial architecture also matches that of thousands of other homes built in the 1920s. In fact, a similar colonial about 100 miles away, in New Jersey, was the on-location set for the 1979 movie.
The address is different from when the murders happened, because the post office changed it at the request of one of the owners. But people still know the house, and O'Neill is trying hard to "avoid any people want to see the house just for the sake of seeing it."
Undated handout pictured released by Christie's on Wednesday, June 8, 2016, of Henry Moore's modernist Sculpture "Reclining figure: festival" in London. The sinuous, 2.3 meter (7½ foot) -long bronze of a reclining woman was created for the 1951 Festival of Britain, which signaled the country's cultural resurgence after World War II and its austere aftermath. Christie's says "Reclining Figure: Festival" could fetch between 15 million pounds and 20 million pounds ($22 million and $29 million) at a June 30 sale.

Babe Ruth was well known to be a ladies man as well as a proficient baseball player. Now fans can own a picture of him displaying the best of both worlds.
Auction house Lelands is accepting bids for an original photograph of Babe Ruth holding a bat between his legs in what has been dubbed his "bat penis."
The image, taken by Yankees teammate Ed Wells, is described as "an interesting reference to the prodigious size of Ruth's member which remains a part of the Bambino's legend."
Bids already have exceeded the minimum $1,000, with the auction ending on June 17.

A tropical fish can tell one human face from another despite lacking a brain section that homo sapiens and other "smart" animals use for this task, scientists said Tuesday.
The astonishing ability was demonstrated in experiments with eight archerfish, a tropical species best known for spitting pressurised water jets to shoot prey out of the air.
Instead of aiming at bugs, the sharpshooting fish were taught to spit at pictures of human faces displayed on a computer monitor suspended over their aquarium.
The fish, which require excellent vision for hunting, were first introduced to two faces, and conditioned to spit at one of them in exchange for a food reward.
The researchers then tested whether the fish would recognise, and spit at, the familiar face among 44 new ones. The fish got it right more than 80 percent of the time.
