• Young rappers tend to be pretty crazy. Older rappers can settle down. Beastie Boy Adam Yauch went to a health-food store to buy a present for his parents one holiday season, and he said that he wanted a carrot juicer. The health-store employee recognized him and said, "So I guess you guys don't drink forties anymore?"
• John King owned the music studio where Run-DMC and many other hip-hop groups did their recording: Chunking Studios. So many hip hoppers worked there in the 1980s and 1990s that Mr. King took the soft drinks out of the soda machine and replaced them with the hip hoppers' beverage of choice: Olde English 800.
Animals
• People in opera sometimes gamble. At the Chicago Opera, Geraldine Farrar sang in Königskinder, in which a bunch of trained geese play a role. At the farewell performance, a poker game as usual was going on backstage, and thinking that the trained geese would no longer be needed, the players quickly used them as stakes in the game. Of course, the geese were taken home that night and eaten by the winners. However, Ms. Farrar's popularity was so great that another performance of Königskinder was given by popular demand, and this time Ms. Farrar had to sing not with trained geese, but with untrained geese which honked at all the wrong times and which flew around the stage.
• Noël Coward once wrote a song titled "Chase Me, Charley" for two cats. When the song was sung on television, the BBC insisted that the lyric "Bound to give in" be replaced with "Waiting for you." Mr. Coward commented, "I think it is very silly. Apparently the BBC thinks that the idea of a cat giving in is more likely to create immoral thoughts in listeners' minds than the idea of a cat waiting to achieve its objective."
April Fool
• On April 1, 1998, world-renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma made a startling announcement on National Public Radio. He stated that he would never again play the cello. Of course, when shocked listeners called NPR, they were told, "April Fool."
Audiences
• An opera-knowledgeable audience can be h*ll on an opera singer. The night before she was scheduled to sing in Parma, soprano Frances Alda and her singing teacher attended a performance there at which Alice Zepelli sang the role of Anna in Verdi's Lorelei. Ms. Zepelli was a fine singer, but unfortunately she broke on a high note. The audience immediately began to hiss. Ms. Alda writes in her autobiography, "And then, as the poor woman stood there, defenseless, the audience began to sing that aria through, as with one voice, and perfectly!" Ms. Alda, her face white, immediately turned to her singing teacher and said, "I can't sing here tomorrow night. I simply can't face an audience like that." However, Ms. Alda did sing the following night - and fortunately, she did not break on a high note.
• When Ludwig van Beethoven's Ninth Symphony was performed in Vienna, it was a huge and immediate success. The members of the audience applauded wildly, but Beethoven, who was deaf by that time, could not hear them and was unaware that they were applauding. Finally, a soloist turned him so he faced the crowd. The members of the audience then added a visual element to the expression of their appreciation by throwing their hats into the air and by waving their handkerchiefs.
Hosted by Jack Bailey, this American radio and TV game show featured contestants with sad stories who were then judged by the audience, using an applause meter, in an effort to win 'big prizes'. What is the name of this game show that ran from 1945 to 1964?
Written by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley specifically for a movie starring Gene Wilder, this song was Sammy Davis, Jr's only number-one hit, spending three weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart in June 1972. What is the title of this sweet song?
"The Candy Man" (or alternatively, "The Candy Man Can") is a song that originally appeared in the 1971 film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. It was written by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley specifically for the film. Although the original book by Roald Dahl (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) contains lyrics adapted for other songs in the film, the lyrics to "The Candy Man" do not appear in the book. The soundtrack version of the song was sung by Aubrey Woods, who played Bill the candy store owner in the film.
Sammy Davis Jr.'s version appears on the Sammy Davis Jr. Now album. Though Davis admitted to disliking the song, finding it too saccharine, it became his only number-one hit, spending three weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart starting 10 June 1972, and two weeks at the top of the easy-listening chart. Billboard ranked it as the No. 5 song for 1972. The track featured backing vocals by the Mike Curb Congregation, who had earlier released their own unsuccessful version of the song. It is recognized as one of Davis's signature songs, and "The Candy Man" came to be his moniker later in his career. The song was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male at the 15th Annual Grammy Awards.

The Candy Man can. Newley (once married to Joan Collins) was one of the
most gifted lyricists of his time.
Dave responded:
The Candy Man. The movie was Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971). I'm sure I didn't see that film in the theater, and I'm pretty sure I never watched it on TV either. I do have a general idea of the plot though, which doesn't recommend it- so I guess I'll never watch it. Sammy Davis Jr. was a great singer and dancer, but I didn't care for that song either. Not Sammy's best work, but he made bank on it.

Led Zeppelin will be holding an exclusive YouTube streaming event for the band's concert film Celebration Day, chronicling their 2007 tribute concert to Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun. The film will be available on Led Zeppelin's YouTube channel in its entirety for just three days, premiering Saturday, May 30th at 3:00 p.m. ET.
The concert depicted in Celebration Day took place at London's O2 Arena on December 10th, 2007, with founding Led Zeppelin members John Paul Jones, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant taking the stage with Jason Bonham, son of late Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham. It marked the band's first headlining show in 27 years, and as such, more than 27 million people applied for tickets to the event in a worldwide lottery. As depicted in the film, the band performed an over-two-hour-long set that included 16 of their most iconic songs, including "Whole Lotta Love," "Kashmir," "Black Dog," "Dazed and Confused," "Stairway to Heaven" and, as the second encore to their set, "Rock and Roll."
"The thing about Led Zeppelin was that it was always four musicians at the top of their game, but they could play like a band," Page said of the performance in 2012. "Even in the first couple of rehearsal days, running up to the O2, we were playing pretty good. But we really wanted to shine as a band."
Celebration Day and its accompanying live album were originally released in 2012, with the LP winning a Grammy Award for Best Rock Album.
Jamie Foxx has defended Jimmy Fallon against criticism related to a resurfaced video of the TV host wearing blackface.
Fallon has faced renewed backlash over the past few days over a 2000 Saturday Night Live clip, in which he impersonates the comedian Chris Rock.
Foxx commented on an Instagram post by E! News about the controversy, writing: "[Fallon] was doing an impression of Chris Rock. It wasn't blackface. We comedians I know it's a tough time right now. But this one is a stretch."
"Let this one go," he added. "We got bigger fish to fry."
Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey suggested that Donald Trump (R-Fabulist)'s conspiracy tweets about Joe Scarborough are better left to the public conversation, "especially with our global leaders," apparently rejecting calls that the platform remove the president's posts.
At Twitter's annual meeting on Wednesday, Dorsey was asked by a shareholder whether the platform would remove the tweets. After Trump had claimed that the 2001 death of Lori Klausutis, an ex-aide to Scarborough, was a cold case and that the Morning Joe co-host was implicated, Klausutis' widower, Timothy Klausutis, sent a letter to Dorsey asking him to remove the president's posts because of the pain it has caused the family.
"We feel terrible for what the family is going through as a result of these actions and these behaviors, and we're doing everything that we can to make sure that we continue to incentivize healthy debate, healthy conversation on Twitter," Dorsey said. "We also believe that it's important that people have conversations around what's happening, especially with our global leaders, that they can push back, that they can speak truth to power, that they can share and show why this particular behavior is not right, and not just."
"We also believe it's critical that people take to the legal system as well and the courts," Dorsey said. "We want to make sure that we're doing our part to maintain the integrity of the conversation, and the biggest risk here … is misleading information, intentionally misleading people in order to take action or not take action. We believe that is absolutely dangerous. And something that we can we can really push on. But there's a there's a number of things where the better venue to take this action is within the legal system, and and within that process."
Liberty University President Jerry "Ask Me AboutMy Poolboy" Falwell, Jr. says he is opposed to Governor Northam's announced mandate for the wearing of masks in indoor public places.
But he tweeted a photo of a mask he would wear if told he has to. Designed by Falwell himself, it has on it a photo from the governor's college yearbook that allegedly shows Northam in blackface.
Northam had taken responsibility for that photo, and apologized, then he recanted and said it wasn't him.
The United States on Wednesday revoked Hong Kong's special status under US law, opening the way to strip trading privileges for the financial hub as Washington accused China of trampling on the territory's autonomy.
Hours before China's rubber-stamp parliament was set to take a key vote on a new Hong Kong security law that has sparked protests, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo certified to Congress that Hong Kong "does not continue to warrant treatment" under US laws that it has enjoyed even after its handover to China in 1997.
Under a law passed last year to support Hong Kong's pro-democracy protesters, the US administration must certify that the territory still enjoys freedoms promised by Beijing when negotiating with Britain to take back the colony.
"No reasonable person can assert today that Hong Kong maintains a high degree of autonomy from China, given facts on the ground," Pompeo said in a statement.
The determination means that Hong Kong could lose its trading privileges, including lower tariffs than the mainland, with the world's largest economy.
A New Jersey judge who advised a woman to close her legs to prevent a sexual assault has been fired from his job, and can never work in the state again. The New Jersey Supreme Court permanently barred state Superior Court Judge John Russo Jr. from presiding over a courtroom on Tuesday.
The decision was unanimous, with the court citing "repeated and serious acts of misconduct" by Russo. Chief Justice Stuart Rabner said that it would be "inconceivable" for Russo to preside over any case involving domestic violence or sexual assault after making those comments, which he called "demeaning."
Following a 2018 complaint, Russo's lawyer said the judge was "remorseful," he "learned his lesson" and "will not do this again."
The judge cited that Russo violated judicial code on at least four occasions. In addition to his inappropriate questioning of the alleged rape victim, Russo also threatened a mother who refused to disclose her address in a paternity case and was unable to be impartial in a case involving his ex-wife and their son and a separate case involving a man he went to high school with.
Last summer, the justices recommended Russo be removed, and a three-judge advisory panel agreed in January. Russo had been on unpaid suspension while appealing those decisions.
Russia on Wednesday seized 40 tonnes of European cheeses smuggled into the country in breach of an embargo on EU food imports, the customs service said.
The cheese was found at a port near the northwestern city of Saint Petersburg in four containers labelled as a component used to produce rubber.
The shipment included Dorblu blue cheese and Italian hard cheeses such as Grana Padano, the customs service said.
It published a video of a sniffer dog eagerly running up to piles of boxes, with an officer opening them to reveal round packaged cheeses.
The containers also contained instant coffee, chocolate biscuits and washing-up liquid, pictures showed.
A Roman mosaic floor has been unearthed at a vineyard in northern following several failed digs.
Surveyors discovered the ornate floor a few metres beneath a row of vines at the site of an ancient villa near the city of Verona.
Technicians are still gently excavating the site to see the full extent of the ancient building, which scholars believe dates back to the 3rd century AD.
Archaeologists first found the site in a hilly area above the town of Negrar di Valpolicella in 1992, but it was later abandoned.
