Mark Morford: All the stumbling drunks of San Francisco (SF Gate)
It's like you can't walk out the front door of your SF flat on a fine, frolicky Bay to Breakers Sunday and not see a dozen wasted, festering kids weeping on the sidewalk, stumbling into parked cars, breaking beer bottles, vomiting into their tassels or bleeding all over their glitter wigs, unsure where they are or how they ever ended up in a giant, furry sparklepig costume in the first place.
Herbert George "H.G." Wells (21 September 1866-13 August 1946) was an English writer, now best known for his work in the science fiction genre. He was also a prolific writer in many other genres, including contemporary novels, history, politics, and social commentary, even writing textbooks and rules for war games. Wells is sometimes called The Father of Science Fiction, as are Jules Verne and Hugo Gernsback. His most notable science fiction works include The War of the Worlds, The Time Machine, The Invisible Man, and The Island of Doctor Moreau.
Wells's earliest specialized training was in biology, and his thinking on ethical matters took place in a specifically and fundamentally Darwinian context. He was also from an early date an outspoken socialist, often (but not always, as at the beginning of the First World War) sympathising with pacifist views. His later works became increasingly political and didactic, and he sometimes indicated on official documents that his profession was that of journalist.

Baron Dave ("I think it's important never to trust your subject's autobiography." -- biographer Ramachandra Guha, "Gandhi Before India") was first, and correct, with:
Herbert George Wells.
Interestingly (at least to me), I just saw him, fictionally portrayed on the Ovation TV show "The Artistic Detective". From the third season, "Future Imperfect" about eugenics, which Wells was into. (In the photo on the episode page, he's not mentioned, but that's Wells on the right.) Now in its fifth season, the semi-steampunk show takes place in 1890s Toronto. A medium-budget show, they put the money in the right places: Writing, costumes, set design. I just started watching, and Ovation is showing new episodes along with back episodes, so some of the story arcs are hard to follow. Still, a good forensic detective show for geeks with a dash of science fiction.

He's a real dandy!
PS: Today was Mall day, and all we could talk about was, "Dancing With The Stars!"
It was SO good this season, I am sorry to see it end. My sight is so bad now that I am wondering if I will even be able to see it next season. Sigh...
Lois Waiting For The Dinner Bell In Oregon replied:
Herbert George Wells (AKA Bertie), the man who made Orson
Wells famous, one of several fathers of modern science
fiction, and damn successful with the ladies, despite
looking like the love child of Leo G. Carroll and Beau
Bridges.
Ducky Fine Dale of the Springs of Diamonds, Norfuckincali, responded:
Horace Gump, Howie Gonzilla, Harry Gonorrhea, Holden Greefious, Herbert George, Hank Grabasski, Horton Slewfoot, Hipper Gourdans, Henry Groundhog; take your pick. He was to Science fiction what dewdrops are to a melon. To history what an illogical ideologue is. He believed that nature was going to devour mankind! Probably so at the rate we're destroying the planet. I love fucking science and reality…….the Koch's and climate change and science deniers will kill the planet and my Grandchildren. Wake the fuck up, Amerika!

Helena Gemmy Wells is a Victorian-era science-fiction writer, former Warehouse 12 apprentice, and 21st Century Warehouse 13 agent.
The man commonly thought of as "H. G. Wells" was, in fact, Helena's brother, Charles Wells. The stories published under the name of "H. G. Wells" were, however, based on, and almost entirely, Helena's ideas. Everybody know that.
As you all know the untimely passing of Terry was unexpected, even by
him. We all knew he had cancer but we all thought he had some years
left. So some of us who have worked closely with him over the years are
scrambling around trying to figure out what to do. My job, among other
things, is to establish communications with the Bartcop community and
provide email lists and groups for those who might put something
together. Those who want to play an active roll in something coming from
this, or if you are one of Bart's pillars, should send an email to

So - to let you know what's going on, the guestbook on bartcop.com is
still open for those who want to write something in memory of Bart.
Bart's final wish was to pay off the house mortgage for Mrs. Bart who is
overwhelmed and so very grateful for the support she has received.

Bill Hemenez of San Leandro, Calif., spent over $40,000 to restore a classic 1964 Chevy Malibu that he'd purchased from a collector more than 12 years ago. He drove the car to countless shows across the state and was continually investing money into keeping it meticulous.
So Hemenez was a little puzzled when police called him last year asking after a stolen Malibu in his driveway - the very same one he'd put so much money and time into.
It turns out that Hemenez's little red Chevy was none other than the car Vincent Vega drove during his troubled date with Mia Wallace in "Pulp Fiction" - a car that went missing outside of director Quentin Tarantino's home nearly two decades ago.
What happened next still saddens Hemenez: "They took the car and gave it back to Tarantino," he says. "And that's fine, because it's not my car. At first I was just happy it wasn't going to the crusher, which isn't uncommon for stolen vehicles." You might expect Hemenez was due compensation after the incident, but Hagerty insurance refused, stating that it doesn't insure stolen cars - despite its criminal past being unknown during that time. "I then asked them to pay me my twelve years of premium back," he says, "given I paid it in good faith, not knowing the scenario. But I was cut dry."
And Hemenez is out more than just the $40,000 in restoration costs; he originally bought the Malibu by trading in his beloved 1946 Chevy hot rod, meaning he lost two cars in total: "I just wish Tarantino or his people would step up to the plate and say, 'Hey, thanks for looking after my car,'" Hemenez says. "He can keep the car, it wasn't mine after all, but take care of the little guy who took such good care of your property. I was ultimately left screwed by it all."

The presumed tension between anti-secrecy activist Julian Assange and Glenn Greenwald, the arch-disseminator of NSA documents provided by Edward Snowden, erupted into the open yesterday on Twitter. The two sparred publicly over Greenwald's decision to redact a piece of information from a recent story.
The story released yesterday and written by Greenwald and two colleagues, alleges that the US is "secretly intercepting, recording, and archiving the audio of virtually every cell phone conversation on the island nation of the Bahamas." The story, published on First Look Media's Intercept channel, also says that the US is harvesting cellphone metadata from four other countries and names three of them - Mexico, The Philippines and Kenya.
The fifth country? The article says "The Intercept is not naming (it) in response to specific, credible concerns that doing so could lead to increased violence."
Assange is generally assumed to write the Wikileaks Twitter feed (and has been watched doing so.) And he wasn't happy at Greenwald's decision to withhold information.
Paul McCartney has canceled his concert in South Korea next week due to the virus-caused illness that forced him to call off his entire Japan tour, organizers said Wednesday.
The former Beatle, who turns 72 next month, had planned to hold concerts in Japan and South Korea as part of his world tour.
"I was really looking forward to visiting and playing in South Korea for the first time and I'm sorry to be letting fans down," McCartney was quoted as saying in a statement released by Seoul-based Hyundai Card Co. Ltd., an organizer for his South Korea concert. "I'm very disappointed by this and hope to be able to visit soon."
The statement said that "Paul is still not feeling better and this cancellation is unavoidable."
McDonald's restaurant chain says its new "Happy" mascot will bring "fun and excitement" to its children's meals, but social media contend the toothy, red box-shaped character will have the opposite effect.
Twitter responses to McDonald's mascot announcement on Monday complain that the animated red Happy Meal box, with its cavernous dark mouth and rows of large white teeth, is scary and will bring children nightmares instead of joy.
The character will be introduced nationwide on Friday. Oak Brook, Illinois-based McDonald's said in a statement that it will encourage kids to enjoy healthy food choices, like fruit, vegetables and low-fat dairy.
In response to the criticism on social media, McDonald's spokeswoman Lisa McComb noted that since 2009, the character has been "loved and well-received by children and families in Latin America and Europe."
Five months ahead of the 2014 midterm elections, the tea party, which was a key factor in the 2010 midterm elections, appears to be losing its influence.
In Tuesday's Republican primaries, tea party-backed candidates were shut out against more established members of the GOP.
According to a CBS News poll released Wednesday, just 15 percent of Americans say they support the tea party - the lowest total since February 2010, and down from a high of 31 percent following the November 2010 midterms.
One reason for the drop-off: Republicans themselves. Just 32 percent of Republicans polled said they support the tea party, down 10 points from February. In July 2010, 55 percent of GOP voters said they supported the movement.

Singer Gregg Allman was sued Wednesday along with movie producers, a railroad company and others accused of being responsible for the February death of a young camera assistant when a freight train slammed into a film crew in southeast Georgia.
The lawsuit filed in Chatham County State Court by the parents of 27-year-old Sarah Jones targets 10 individuals associated with the film "Midnight Rider," based on the Allman Brothers Band singer's memoir. It also goes after eight corporations including CSX Transportation, which owns the railroad tracks where the crash occurred, and Rayonier Performance Fibers, a subsidiary of forest-products manufacturer Rayonier that owns the land surrounding the crash site.
Filmmakers "selected an unreasonably dangerous site for the filming location; failed to secure approval for filming from CSX; concealed their lack of approval from CSX from the cast and crew ... and otherwise failed to take measures to protect the safety of the 'Midnight Rider' cast and crew," the lawsuit charges. It was filed on behalf of Jones' parents, Richard and Elizabeth Jones of Columbia, South Carolina.
Allman was named as a defendant in his role as an executive producer on the film. Also included were director Randall Miller, his production company Unclaimed Freight Productions and several of Miller's assistants on the film along with companies assisting with the production.

Russell Crowe is speaking out against the boycott of the Beverly Hills Hotel.
In a series of tweets, the actor says he is a supporter of LGBT rights and condemns the harsh anti-gay laws adopted by the hotel's owner, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei. But he said the boycott is not the way to respond.
"Throwing the staff of Dorchester Collection Hotels under the bus to make a political point is not acceptable to me," Crowe tweeted Tuesday. "These are hard working people with families and I guarantee you they come from all walks of life."
Instead of the boycott, he urged people to pressure their governments to impose trade sanctions on Brunei and stop buying its oil.

The principal of a Catholic elementary school in suburban Philadelphia is apologizing to parents for having used a photo of celebrity Ellen DeGeneres on an invitation to an Oscars-themed graduation dance.
St. Andrew Elementary School principal Nancy Matteo wrote in an email to parents Tuesday that using the photo was "completely wrong" because DeGeneres "lives her life outside the teachings of the Catholic Church," Philly.com reported.
The site said it obtained the text of the email, which doesn't specifically mention DeGeneres' sexual orientation but calls her a "poor role model." DeGeneres came out as gay in 1997 and married actress Portia de Rossi in 2008.
Spokesman Ken Gavin of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia said the Bucks County principal apologized of her own accord (cough, cough) after parents questioned the photo. He said Catholic schools are "firmly rooted in Gospel-based values and the teachings of the Church" and any promotional materials developed by the schools are expected to "feature images and themes that correspond with their core mission and identity."

The Mounties say they're "reaching out" to Pamela Anderson after the British Columbia-born actress gave an emotional speech in France in which she recalled years of sexual abuse as a child.
Anderson, who is from Ladysmith, B.C., on Vancouver Island, spoke last Friday in Cannes at an event launching her charity, going into detail about sexual assaults she says she endured from a young age.
Cpl. Darren Lagan of the RCMP said the force is aware of Anderson's speech.
"Given the nature of the allegations, an investigator with the Ladysmith RCMP is in the process of reaching out to Ms. Anderson to discuss this matter with her directly," Lagan said in an emailed statement.
Anderson, who has previously talked about being a survivor of rape, was launching the Pamela Anderson Foundation, which is dedicated to boosting human rights, helping animals and caring for the environment.

"The Happiest Place on Earth" has become one of the most crowded.
Tourists and annual pass holders are flooding Disneyland and California Adventure in large numbers, causing headaches for guests and park officials. Waits for rides often stretch over an hour, and visitors are having to park in remote structures, particularly on Sundays.
Industry experts say the crowding problem leaves Walt Disney Co. with two options: Keep hiking rates until attendance becomes manageable, or expand the park.
Over the weekend, the Anaheim park raised single-day ticket prices by $4 to $96 and temporarily halted new sales of a popular annual pass for Southern California residents. Disneyland officials say they have no current plans for a new Anaheim park, but that hasn't stopped speculation.
A demonstrator wears a protective suit with a message taped to it that reads in Spanish; "Fracking for all," in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Wednesday, May 21, 2014. The Energy Information Administration (EIA) has reportedly cut the amount of shale oil gas expected to be retrieved from the Monterey reserves in California, saying that earlier estimates overshot by quite a bit - about 96 percent. There goes our energy independence plan.
The Los Angeles Times reports that the EIA has revised downwards the amount of estimated possible oil extraction from 13.7 billion barrels to 600 million barrels. Oil taken from the Monterey Shale deposits was expected to boost the local economy by $24.6 billion each year and inject 2.8 million new jobs into the California market.
The problem with the much-higher earlier estimate is mostly technological. It was based on findings by an independent firm hired by the government, Intek Inc., which assumed that the process for recovering gas from the Monterey deposits would be comparable to that used in other shale-rich regions. This, explains the Times, is not the case.
The findings serve a major blow to U.S. energy policy, which considered the deposit a "black gold mine." But they shouldn't come as a surprise - the LA Times published an opinion piece back in December that pointed to earlier reports doubting the estimated output.
An armadillo, named Ana Botafogo in honor of the Brazilian dancer, walks in the Rio Zoo in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Wednesday, May 21, 2014. A Brazilian environmental group has launched an effort to save the endangered three-banded armadillo, the mascot for the World Cup that starts next month. The armadillo is in danger of extinction, largely because of deforestation and hunting in its habitat in the shrub lands of northeastern Brazil, according to the Caatinga Association.
