Composed in 1946 by American songwriter Bobby Troup, this popular rhythm and blues standard is a mini-travelogue highlighting the western two-thirds of the U.S. What is the title of this song?
"(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66" is a popular rhythm and blues standard, composed in 1946 by American songwriter Bobby Troup. The song uses a twelve-bar blues arrangement and the lyrics follow the path of U.S. Route 66 (US 66), which traversed the western two-thirds of the U.S. from Chicago, Illinois, to Los Angeles, California.
Nat King Cole, with the King Cole Trio, first recorded the song the same year, and it became a hit, appearing on Billboard magazine's R&B and pop charts.
The lyrics read as a mini-travelogue about the major stops along the route, listing several cities and towns through which Route 66 passes: St. Louis; Joplin, Missouri; Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Amarillo, Texas; Gallup, New Mexico; Flagstaff, Arizona; Winona, Arizona; Kingman, Arizona; Barstow, California; and San Bernardino, California. Winona is the only town out of sequence: it was a very small settlement east of Flagstaff and might indeed have been forgotten if not for the lyric "Don't forget Winona", written to rhyme with "Flagstaff, Arizona".
Two of the leading British Invasion bands included "Route 66" on their debut albums, Them (Featuring Van Morrison) and the Rolling Stones.

(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66. Sung by Nat King Cole and performed by the King Cole Trio. The song was inspired by a cross country car trip by Troup when he moved to California, hoping to become a movie screenwriter. Troup largely supported himself on music royalties and singing, but also did some movie and TV acting. Troup and second wife Julie London were both cast by producer Jack Webb (London's ex-husband) to play a doctor and nurse for his long running TV series Emergency.

"Get Your Kicks on) Route 66", a good song and fun TV series with a Corvette. A couple of years ago I chanced upon the midpoint of Route 66 in Adrian, Texas while returning from a vacation trip to Colorado and New Mexico. I had driven that route many times over several decades, but had never stopped in that little town that is just off of Interstate 40 which pretty much replaced Route 66. Adrian is located about 50 miles due west of Amarillo and has a population of around 150 hearty souls.

• The punk group the Sex Pistols sang their song "God Save the Queen" during Queen Elizabeth II's Jubilee Year, which celebrated her first 25 years as Queen. The song contained the depressing refrain of "no future" and rhymed "God save our Queen" with "fascist regime." It was popular, selling 150,000 copies during its first five days of release and reaching the number 2 spot in the charts. However, newspapers declined to list the song, deciding instead to simply leave the number 2 spot in the charts blank.
Friends
• Music is important to folksingers. Woody Guthrie once arrived for a visit with his friend Pete Seeger. Seeing Woody's guitar, Pete unslung his banjo, and before they said "Hello" and shook hands, they had played "Doggy Split a Rye Straw," "Fifteen Miles from Birmingham," "Going Down This Road Feeling Bad," "Sally Goodin," and "Worried Man Blues."
• Italian baritone Giuseppe De Luca was well liked by his colleagues, although he once had a problem with them because of gambling. Mr. Caruso taught Mr. De Luca how to play poker, and Mr. De Luca soon became so good and won so consistently that Mr. Caruso - and everyone else - declined to play with him.
Gays and Lesbians
• The sister of country music superstar Garth Brooks is gay, and Mr. Brooks made a pro-gay statement in his song "We Shall Be Free." Actually, it might be more accurate to say that he made a pro-love statement in that song, which celebrates love, whether it is between people of different races or people of the same sex. His sister helped educate Mr. Brooks, who is heterosexual, simply by being who she was. Mr. Brooks says, "The longer you live with it, the more you realize that it's just another form of people loving each other."
• Lesbian singer/songwriter kd lang, aka Kathryn Dawn Lang, aka Kathy Lang, created a lot of buzz in the 1990s. In 1992, she even appeared on the cover of Vanity Fair in a photograph that showed her sitting in a barber chair while supermodel Cindy Crawford shaved her. A male journalist once asked Ms. Lang what was going through her mind while she was posing for the photograph. She replied, "Pretty much what would have been going through yours in the same circumstances, I imagine."
Gigs
• Early in their career, the Ramones played in London on July 4, 1976. Some cool kids who called themselves The Clash hung around during a sound check before the concert and talked to the members of the band, mentioning that they played music, too, but weren't good enough to play in public. Johnny Ramone told them, "Are you kidding? I hope you're coming tonight. We're lousy. We can't play. If you wait until you can play, you'll be too old to get up there. We stink, really. But it's great." (Of course, this is a great example of punk rock's DYI - Do It Yourself - attitude.) The concert made headlines. A tabloid used the headline "Glue Sniff Shocker" because one Ramones' song was titled "Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue." This amused bass player Dee Dee Ramone, who said, "I hope they really don't think we sniff glue. I quit when I was eight."

"Fleabag," "Stranger Things," "Succession," "Ramy," "Watchmen" and "When They See Us" are among the nominees for the 2020 Peabody Awards, which recognizes the best of digital and broadcast media for the year. The six programs were among a crowded field of 13 contenders in the entertainment category.
Of this year's 60 total nominations, PBS and HBO lead the pack with 11 and seven nominations, respectively. They were followed by Netflix with five, Amazon with three) and Showtime, CNN, NBC News, and the podcast company Pineapple Street Studios with two each. 30 winners will be named at a later date, as the traditional ceremony has been canceled this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The Peabody Awards are based at the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia. This year's nominees encompass a range of today's most pressing topics, including the criminal justice system, repercussions of the #MeToo movement, and immigrant rights, according to the Peabody Awards board.
Other nominees in the entertainment category include "David Makes Man," which is OWN's first Peabody nomination, as well as "Dickinson," "Float," "Good Omens," "Our Boys," and "Unbelievable."
Banksy has unveiled a new artwork in Southampton General Hospital depicting a nurse as a superhero.
The piece, titled Game Changer, can be seen on Level C of the building, and was made as a thank you to staff for their hard work during the coronavirus pandemic.
Following its unveiling, the enigmatic street artist left a note for hospital workers, which read: "I hope this brightens the place up a bit, even if its only black and white."
The artwork specifically shows a boy playing with a nurse superhero toy, while figures of famous costumed heroes Batman and Spiderman lie in a rubbish bin.
This nurse wears a cape, face mask and a white apron emblazoned with a red cross. She also has her arm raised as if she is flying.
Renewal hysteria swept CBS early Wednesday, with the Eye network picking up 23 total series for the (sure to be coronavirus-addled) 2020-2021 television season.
In addition to sure-thing tentpoles such as NCIS (and its spinoffs NCIS: Los Angeles and NCIS: New Orleans), Blue Bloods and 60 Minutes, CBS is bringing back freshman bubble series All Rise, Bob Hearts Abishola and The Unicorn. Other in-limbo shows securing a green light include TVLine reader fave S.W.A.T., as well as Bull, SEAL Team and MacGyver. Rounding out the renewal list are FBI, FBI Most Wanted, The Neighborhood, Magnum P.I,, 48 Hours and Undercover Boss.
Those lucky 17 join the previously announced renewals of Young Sheldon, Mom, Survivor, The Amazing Race and acclaimed freshman drama Evil.
A CBS insider, meanwhile, confirms that freshman series Carol's Second Act, Broke and Tommy, as well as venerable utility player Man With a Plan have all been cancelled. They join previously-axed Sunday drama God Friended Me will not be back for Season 3.
With the COVID-19 crisis wreaking havoc on pilot season (and creating a growing list of development casualties), CBS was widely expected to bring back most of its current lineup, struggling bubble series included. It remains unclear when the 22 returning series will resume production and what impact any potential/inevitable delay will have on episode counts.
Sinclair Broadcast Group agreed on Wednesday to pay a record $48 million fine to resolve a series of allegations with the Federal Communications Communication.
The FCC announced that the agreement will end three investigations into the broadcaster, including charges that it failed to disclose the sponsor of paid content, and that it misled the FCC during its failed merger with Tribune Media.
In a statement, FCC Chairman Ajit Pai called Sinclair's conduct "completely unacceptable" and said the fine should serve as a warning to others.
The FCC also found that Sinclair had aired paid programming 1,700 times without disclosing the identity of the sponsor. The commission proposed a $13.4 million fine for that conduct in December 2017.
The third investigation involved charges that Sinclair had failed to conduct good faith negotiations for retransmission consent agreements.
It was a gesture born of suffering and kindness carried over generations.
In 1847, the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma sent $170 to Ireland during the Great Famine - a time of mass starvation on the island. More than 170 years later, Ireland has returned the favor, helping to raise more than $2 million for the Navajo and Hopi nations, which have been hard hit by the coronavirus pandemic.
Donors said they felt like it was a chance to pay the good deed forward.
"I saw that Irish people were starting to donate and share the story of Choctaw Nation and the historical symmetry really affected me," said Paul Hayes, a native of Tipperary, Ireland, who runs Beachhut, a technology public relations firm said in an email. "Sending the actual amount of $170 personally after 170 or so years felt like the right tribute across the ages."
The sentiment runs deep in Ireland where the memory of the Great Potato Famine - which claimed more than one million lives by the time it ended in 1852 - endures to this day. And that's why strangers were inspired to make a symbolic gesture of goodwill toward people living across an ocean, 5,000 miles away. The donations sent on GoFundMe include messages of hope and gratitude from people in Ireland.
Donald Trump (R-Failure) has been accused of personally causing the deaths of 40,000 Americans through his "reckless" handling of the Covid-19 pandemic, in a new website launched on Wednesday under the provocative title Trump Death Clock.
The website, created by independent film-maker Eugene Jarecki, is a conscious echo of the National Debt Clock which since 1989 has given a running score near Times Square in Manhattan of total US borrowing. The Trump Death Clock extends the idea dramatically by providing a tracker measured not in dollars but in lives allegedly lost by the president's own inept actions.
"I am seeking accountability for reckless leadership," Jarecki told the Guardian. "We have meticulously isolated just that portion of the US death toll where one can see a specific line between the president's decisions and actions and the loss of life."
The Trump Death Clock provides a bald tally of lives that it claims were needlessly lost to Covid-19 that ticks upwards in real time. At the time of reporting this article, it stood at 39,435 - laying responsibility for almost 40,000 American lives at the White House door.
The figure is in turn based upon the authoritative running tally of total deaths from Covid-19 compiled by the Covid Tracking Project. From its daily read-out of coronavirus fatalities, Jarecki's team has created the Trump Death Clock through a simple mathematical calculation of 60% of total deaths from the disease in the US.
The North Magnetic Pole is on the run - and scientists might finally know why.
It's easy to think of Earth's geomagnetic poles as features that are set in stone (or ice), but both poles are not stationary and remain in a permanent state of flux. Since it was first documented by scientists in the 1830s, the North Magnetic Pole has wandered some 2,250 kilometers (1,400 miles) across the upper stretches of the Northern Hemisphere from Canada towards Siberia. Between 1990 and 2005, the rate of this movement accelerated from less than 15?kilometers per year to around 50 to 60?kilometers per year.
A new study, published this week in the journal Nature Geoscience, argues the changes could be explained by the to-ing and fro-ing between two magnetic "blobs" of molten material in the planet's interior, causing a titanic shift of its magnetic field.
The North Magnetic Pole is the point at which Earth's magnetic field points vertically downwards, dictated by molten iron that's sloshing around Earth's interior through convection currents. The recent shift towards Siberia, it seems, is caused by a blip in the pattern of flow in Earth's interior that occurred between 1970 and 1999. The change resulted in the Canadian blob becoming elongated and losing its influence on the magnetosphere, causing the pole to zoom towards Siberia.
The researchers reached this conclusion using data gathered by the European Space Agency's (ESA) Swarm satellites. This trio of satellites orbit Earth and precisely measure the magnetic signals that stem from our planet's core, mantle, crust, and oceans, as well as from the ionosphere and magnetosphere. Keeping an eye on Earth's magnetic field isn't just important for abstract scientific studies; the magnetic field serves as a shield of geomagnetic energy that protects Earth from destructive solar radiation. It is also imperative for many navigation systems, from the humble compass to GPS.
More than a century ago, something exploded in the sky above Siberia, breaking windows and creating a shining ball of light - but was it a meteor impact?
The Tunguska event, in 1908, is described as the largest impact event in recorded history, destroying 80 million trees over an area of 800 square miles in the Siberian forest.
But mysteriously, no impact crater was ever found, even though there are fragments of rock that could be meteoric in origin, Science Alert reported.
Researchers have suggested that nothing actually hit the ground at all, and instead, a large iron asteroid flew through Earth's atmosphere before flying off into space.
The researchers said it's possible that an iron asteroid could have passed through the atmosphere and continued into space.
