Stacey May Fowles: Josh Lueke Is A Rapist, You Say? Keep Saying It (Deadspin)
Late Saturday night, during the Yankees-Rays game, I stumbled onto an online conversation among baseball writers and fans regarding the propriety of tweeting about Rays pitcher Josh Lueke's criminal history every time he's on the mound.

All of us (except lower-income people living in states controlled by Republicans) now have access to affordable coverage regardless of whatever health problems we may have - or may develop. It doesn't take long to say that, but it took our country nearly a century to get it, after we first started trying.

What TV series revolved around an extraterrestrial research expedition attempting to live as a normal human family in the fictional city of Rutherford, Ohio?
3rd Rock from the Sun (sometimes referred to as simply 3rd Rock) is an American sitcom that aired from 1996 to 2001 on NBC. The show is about four extraterrestrials who are on an expedition to Earth, which they consider to be a very insignificant planet. The extraterrestrials pose as a human family in order to observe the behavior of human beings.
The premise of the show revolves around an extraterrestrial research expedition attempting to live as a normal human family in the fictional city of Rutherford, Ohio, said to be 52 miles (84 km) outside of Cleveland, where they live in an attic apartment. Humor was principally derived from the aliens' attempts to study human society and, because of their living as humans themselves while on Earth, to understand the human condition. This show reflects human life from the perspective of aliens and many sources of humour are from the learning experiences the alien characters have. Most of the episodes are named after the protagonist "Dick". In later episodes, they became more accustomed to Earth and often became more interested in their human lives than in their mission.
Dick Solomon (John Lithgow), the High Commander and leader of the expedition, is the family provider, and takes a position as a physics professor at Pendelton State University. Information officer Tommy (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) has been given the body of a teenager and is forced to enroll in high school (later college), leaving security officer Sally (Kristen Johnston) and communications officer Harry (French Stewart) to spend their lives as twenty somethings hanging out at home and bouncing through short-term jobs. The show also revolves around their relationships with humans, mostly their love interests.

That would be the series that introduced Joseph Gordon-Levitt to America, Third Rock from the Sun. It also gave William Shatner his perfect role.

My first guess was gonna be the Coneheads, but then I realized they just crash landed on Earth and tried to fit in. Then I remembered that odd crew of aliens in human form on 3rd Rock From the Sun, and everything came together for me. Who knew Joseph Gordon-Levitt would grow up to be such a big movie star? Well, John Lithgow didn't do to badly for himself, either.

It's the classic sitcom "Third Rock From The Sun" ! I love that show! Big Bang Theory is good fun,
but 3rd Rock is the last GREAT sitcom. Nothing since rises to its level of comedy, imho.
I actually own them all on disc.
Y'know, I expected the entire cast to move on to other successful comedies.
They probably weren't republicans, so they never got that chance.
After 2000 I noticed many liberal actors got less work.
"Harry" was in a prime time cartoon about God & the Devil, but it was uninspired.
I remember seeing "Sally" in the Bullwinkle & Rocky film. We all know how that worked out.
"Dick" has been here in Austin a few times doing monologues, and performing kids' songs.
When all four were in the show, they were as funny as any classic comedy team.

And, Joe S responded:
My first thought was "The Coneheads" but I'm don't know. Were the Coneheads ever a TV series? I don't think so. This calls for extensive research, dammit, and I've got a headache.
OMG! I feel so...so....so...disloyal! "3rd Rock From The Sun" was one of my favorite TV shows ever. How could I not know that! I love those quirky shows, and 3rd Rock was one of the best. Not as good as "Northern Exposure," but pretty darn good. One of my favorite scenes was when Harry learned it's not good to cook (especially fry things) naked. Good scene, although I'd rather have seen Sally in it.

For The Corporate Interest, Convenience & Necessity
'Net Neutrality'
The Federal Communications Commission will propose new rules that allow Internet service providers to offer a faster lane through which to send video and other content to consumers, as long as a content company is willing to pay for it, according to people briefed on the proposals.
The proposed rules are a complete turnaround for the FCC on the subject of so-called net neutrality, the principle that Internet users should have equal ability to see any content they choose, and that no content providers should be discriminated against in providing their offerings to consumers.
The FCC's previous rules governing net neutrality were thrown out by a federal appeals court this year. The court said those rules had essentially treated Internet service providers as public utilities, which violated a previous FCC ruling that Internet links were not to be governed by the same strict regulation as telephone or electric service.
The new rules, according to the people briefed on them, will allow a company like Comcast or Verizon to negotiate separately with each content company - like Netflix, Amazon, Disney, or Google - and charge different companies different amounts for priority service.
That, of course, could increase costs for content companies, which would then have an incentive to pass on those costs to consumers as part of their subscription prices.

Legendary rockers Led Zeppelin said on Wednesday they will include previously unreleased songs in the first batch of reissues of their nine studio albums, including a version of their pulsating "Whole Lotta Love"
The reissues, remastered by guitarist Jimmy Page, will be launched on June 3 with deluxe editions of "Led Zeppelin", "Led Zeppelin II" and "Led Zeppelin III". Each album will include a second disc of unreleased music related to that album.
"The material on the companion discs presents a portal to the time of the recording of Led Zeppelin," Page is quoted as saying in a statement from the band.
The companion audio for the band's 1969 debut album "Led Zeppelin" features a previously unreleased performance recorded in October of that year at the Olympia Theatre in Paris. The nine-song set features seven tracks from the album, including a 15-minute version of "Dazed And Confused".
Mel Brooks has seemingly done it all in his illustrious show biz career. But there's one thing he's tackled only recently - a one-man show.
Brooks will star in his first solo show Monday at the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles. It's being billed as an "an introspective retrospective."
The sold-out show will have only one performance.

The 51-year-old Oscar winner wed girlfriend Alexandra Hedison over the weekend, Foster's publicist confirmed Wednesday. Jennifer Allen offered no other details.
E! was the first to report that Foster tied the knot with Hedison, a 44-year-old photographer based in Los Angeles.
It's the first marriage for Foster, who came out publicly in a rambling, heartfelt speech at the 2013 Golden Globe Awards, where she accepted lifetime achievement honours.
Hedison, who was previously linked to Ellen DeGeneres, is also an actress with TV credits including "Nash Bridges" and "The L Word."
A judge in Los Angeles has denied a request to release R&B singer Chris Brown from custody while he awaits trial on an assault charge in Washington, D.C.
Superior Court Judge Victor Greenberg denied a request Wednesday by Brown's lawyer to release the Grammy-winner from custody either on bail or his own recognizance. The singer has been jailed since mid-March on a no-bail warrant after he was expelled from a court-ordered rehab program.
Brown's bodyguard has been convicted of assaulting a man in Washington, and Brown's trial has been delayed until at least June. He remains under court supervision in Los Angeles for his 2009 attack on then-girlfriend Rihanna.
The singer's attorney, Bob Kalunian, requested Brown's release, but Greenberg said there was no change in circumstances that warrants his release.
A request by the New York City Police Department has backfired - in a very public way.
Its request that Twitter users share pictures of them posing with police officers has caused people to start sending in photos of police brutality.
The NYPD sent a tweet on Tuesday, saying it might feature the photographs on its Facebook page.
The responses soon turned ugly when Occupy Wall Street tweeted a photograph of cops battling protesters with the caption "changing hearts and minds one baton at a time."
Other photos included an elderly man bloodied after being arrested for jaywalking.

Quentin Tarantino has suffered a setback in his effort to punish Gawker for linking to a copy of his unproduced screenplay The Hateful Eight.

The founder of Russia's leading social media network - a wunderkind often described as Russia's Mark Zuckerberg - has left his post as CEO and fled the country as cronies of President Vladimir Putin have made steady inroads into the company's ownership.
The slow-motion ouster of Pavel Durov from the network known as VKontakte, or "In Contact," is the latest sign that independent media outlets in Russia have become increasingly imperiled.
Although months in the making, the loss of Durov's leadership in VKontakte means that the space for free speech on the Russian web could shrink even further.
As one of his final acts of defiance, Durov posted online last week what he said were documents from the security services, demanding personal details from 39 Ukraine-linked groups on VKontakte, also known as VK.
On Tuesday, the Russian parliament passed a law requiring social media websites to keep their servers in Russia and save all information about their users for at least half a year. The same law, which will go into effect in August if signed by Putin, gave bloggers the same legal status - and responsibilities - as media outlets, making them more vulnerable to accusations of libel or extremism.
An Ovation guitar factory in the western Connecticut hills that produced instruments for music legends from Paul Simon to Cat Stevens to Glen Campbell will be closing in June after 47 years and production of the Ovation line in the United States will stop, the manufacturer's parent company told the shop's 46 workers this week.
Fender Musical Instruments Corp., based in Scottsdale, Ariz., and maker of the iconic Stratocaster electric guitar, said in an announcement Tuesday that it was ceasing domestic production of Ovation guitars and closing the New Hartford factory, citing "current market conditions and insufficient volume levels." The company also said it is consolidating production of U.S.-made acoustic instruments.
Ovations will continue to be manufactured outside the U.S., Fender spokesman Jason Farrell said Wednesday. He said Fender also builds Ovations in China, South Korea and Indonesia.
The factory also has been making Fender and Guild guitars since Fender bought Ovation's owner, Bloomfield, Conn.-based Kaman Music Corp., in 2007. The shop opened in 1967 after Charles Kaman, an engineer who founded Bloomfield-based aerospace company Kaman Corp., developed the first Ovation guitar. Kaman died in 2011.

Just in time for Earth Day 2014, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) released their monthly summary for March of this year, and the news isn't good for the planet.
The warmest regions of the planet in March 2014 - when compared to the 30 years prior to 2010 - were across Asia and eastern Europe, through the western United States and in Australia. There was also a somewhat worrisome rise in temperatures though the Arctic over Alaska and the Yukon, and particularly in northern Siberia, courtesy of the polar vortex.
It was this same polar vortex that was making it so frigid across central and eastern parts of North America last month. However, this is far from being some kind of 'recovery' from the heat or evidence that we're going into some kind of ice age. Climate Central plotted this map of Earth Day temperatures throughout the United States, between 1970 and 2013, to show how the different states of the country have been heating up over that time.

The parents, who live in British Columbia, Canada, rejected that one in favor of the second-place name, Amelia. Though they did have a good sense of humor about the results.
