Aisha Harris: The History of Mister Rogers' Powerful Message (Slate)
When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, "Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping." To this day, especially in times of "disaster," I remember my mother's words and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers - so many caring people in this world.
Paul Krugman: "Holy Coding Error, Batman" (New York Times)
If true, this is embarrassing and worse for R-R. But the really guilty parties here are all the people who seized on a disputed research result, knowing nothing about the research, because it said what they wanted to hear.
David Haglund: "'We're the No. 1 Threat to Women! The Feminist Comedy of Louis C.K." (Slate)
… "How do women still go out with guys, when you consider that there is no greater threat to women than men? We're the number one threat to women! Globally and historically, we're the number one cause of injury and mayhem to women." A moment later he adds, speaking for all men, "You know what our number one threat is? Heart disease."
Lake Superior (French: Lac Supérieur) is the largest of the five traditionally demarcated Great Lakes of North America. The lake is bounded by Ontario and Minnesota to the north and west, and Wisconsin and Michigan to the south. It is generally considered the largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area. It is the world's third-largest freshwater lake by volume.
The Ojibwe call the lake gichigami, meaning "big water." Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote the name as "Gitche Gumee" in The Song of Hiawatha, as did Gordon Lightfoot in his song, "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald".

Charlie was first, and correct, with:
Ignoring that it's partly in Canada, and also ignoring that Lakes Michigan and Huron combined are hydrologically one lake, it's the big lake they call Gitche Gumee, a.k.a. Lake Superior.
Everyone knows the song, but I'll link to it anyway

OMG, this is the question for B2BB! Coming from the ocean part of the country, I see a, "Lake" as something from which you can see the other side. B2BB has educated me about the, "Great Lakes" and I think his Lake Michigan is the largest in the States. (I could be wrong, coming from the ocean POV, but I don't think so...
This is "Sloan Lake" in Denver CO, a few blocks from where my kids grew up. We spent many a day/night there enjoying the water, and band concerts in the summer. It is a natural lake as well; people there think it's huge...

As I live in the Great State of Michigan (well it used to be before Rick Snyder and his minions too over) I know the answer is Lake Superior.

Superman's 75th anniversary is giving his creators' blue-collar hometown a renewed chance to claim the superhero as its own.
Fans hope Thursday's anniversary, including lighting city hall with Superman's colors, will raise the profile of co-creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.
The city is making a start with a Superman day proclaimed by the mayor and giving out birthday cake at the airport's Superman display.
Siegel and Shuster labored on their creation for years in the throttling grip of the Great Depression before finally selling Superman to a publisher.
The Man of Steel became a Depression-era bootstrap strategy for the Siegel/Shuster team, according to Brad Ricca, a professor at nearby Case Western Reserve University who uses Superman in his classes.
The New York Post was derided Tuesday for apparent inaccuracies in its reporting on the bombing at the Boston Marathon. And now, its rival tabloid, the Daily News, is facing criticism over an apparent photo touch-up.
On yesterday's cover wrap, the News ran a photo taken by John Tlumacki of The Boston Globe showing an injured woman lying in a pool of blood while being tended to by a civilian.
It was one of many widely circulated images capturing the moments after explosives were detonated near the finish line of the marathon on Monday afternoon, killing as least three and wounding more than 170 in a likely terrorist attack about which police are still scrambling to scare up leads.
But the version published by the News seemed to erase a gory wound to the woman's leg that was visible in other publications that used the photo. On Tuesday evening, a link to a blog post exposing the manipulation began circulating among News journalists, some of whom were none-too-pleased about the situation, multiple newsroom sources told Capital.
"If you can't stomach the gore, don't run the photo. Period," wrote Charles Apple, the author of the blog post and an editor at the Orange County Register of Santa Ana, Calif. He also noted that Newark's Star-Ledger ran the same photo on page one exactly as it had been taken by the Globe photographer.

A British television channel is pulling a comedy about a group of hapless terrorists from its schedule in the wake of the deadly Boston Marathon bombings.
The Film4 channel was planning to air the movie "Four Lions" next Monday. The 2010 film is a dark comedy about four incompetent British Muslim jihadists who undergo terrorism training before trying to attack the London Marathon.
Film4 said Wednesday it has decided not to proceed with the broadcast "in light of recent tragic events."
The London Marathon is scheduled to go ahead on Sunday. British police said more searches will be carried out and more officers will be put on the streets.

When an unsolicited email arrives, most people hit delete and move on with their lives. Not Bart Cohn.
The Wildwood, Mo., resident received a newsletter from Brian Nieves, a Republican member of the Missouri Senate with whom Cohn does not see eye to eye on the issues. According to River Front Times, which originally reported the story, Cohn wrote a seven-word reply to Nieves' newsletter. "Take me off your mailing list. Freak."
And thus began a wackadoo exchange of insults between Cohn and Nieves, all of which were forwarded by Cohn to River Front Times.
After Cohn's tersely worded response, Nieves issued a retort:

A rare pink diamond once owned by Indian royalty has sold for $39.3 million at auction in New York City.
The price for the 34.65-carat diamond that sold at Christie's on Tuesday was the second-highest ever for a jewel sold at auction. The seller and buyer were anonymous.
The gem nicknamed the Princie Diamond was discovered 300 years ago in the Golconda mines in India.
In 1960, the diamond was purchased at auction by the London branch of the jeweler Van Cleef & Arpels.
Its name was bestowed at a party at the firm's Paris store. It was called Princie in honor of the 14-year-old prince of Baroda, who attended the party with his mother, Maharani Sita Devi.
