M Is FOR MASHUP - April 17th, 2008

Mashup Face Off - Vote Now!

By DJ Useo

There're so many great mashup tracks coming out nowadays. There're countless individual sites for each bootlegger. There're many mashup forums, & lots of blogs devoted to them. But there's no mashup contest. Not one. There are mashup challenges, where a theme is decided & tracks are made, but there's no winner & no voting. Till now! I've picked 4 mashups released recently & here's your chance to decide which is best. Merely take a few moments to enjoy these finestkind tracks & then send your vote for best track to me. Next week, I'll tabulate the votes & post the winner.

Track #1 is Copycat's track "Does Your Homosapien Know?" It contains Pete Shelley's 80's track "Homosapien" merged incredibly with Abba's "Does Your Mother Know?". Many of you might not even know either artist or song, but I assure you, it's an incredible track with likeable memorability. The combination of the songs under Copycat's experienced handling produces a track sure to inspire replays. You can't buy this mashup, but you can experience the mixing ability of Copycat through the mp3 post here -
djcopycat.blogspot.com

Track #2 is DJ Fac's "Broken,But Mezmerized". Built upon a rocking foundation of Unkle's "Broken", it features the lovely vocals of Faith Evan's "Mezmerized". With a very modern sound, this mashup roars with passion. Despite a constant presence in the mashup field, DJ Fac is still finding his audience. Surely, the tracks he regularly releases are among the best out there. I predict that once the audience catches up with his output, he'll be well-known & sought-after. Sample his expertise here -
djfac.com/

Track #3 comes in the form of Hahnstudio's "I Believe In Burning Beds". In this masterwork, you'll experience the modern dance thrill of Dance2Trance aligned against the intense pop-ness of Australia's classic band Midnight Oil. Much danceability & searing melody ensues. Hahnstudios fills up the nearly 9-minute masterpiece with a bastard pop give & take that displays his accomplished gift for bootlegging. It plays as if it started this way on some label's roster. See for yourself right near the bottom of the page here -
hahnstudios.blogspot.com/

Track #4 comes from the practiced hand of DJ Moule. "Rubin was a Rollingstone" takes the early 70's wondertune "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" by the Temptations, & adds the vocals of the Frenchman with a German pseudonym, Rubin Steiner, to perform together to our mashup satisfaction. A lively tune with English vocals, it has bass that bops, strings that tingle, & vocals that weave back & forth between the artists. DJ Moule has a long history of incredible tracks. This mashup reveals no letup in his successful releases. Do yourself a favour & direct your ears' attention to it. Found in the bootleg section here -
djmoule.com/

Listen to each of the four, then decide your fave. Next drop me your choice by eMail here - useo8@yahoo.com
Mark the subject line "Mashup Face Off" & you're good to go!
Next Wednesday, I'll post the name of the winning track here.

Have fun.

Mix Of The Week - Viper Pilot provides nearly 2 hours of mashup & electro-goodness that will have you listening straight on through in one sitting. Heed your need for thrills here -

Mashup Tip: Don't mix down by the docks after midnight. What are you? Crazy!?

Ann Grauvogl: For Some Homeowners, Smaller is Better (Isthmus)
People who live in very small houses -- 300 to 600 square feet -- can love them dearly and be just as proud as any mansion owner. They might bump into each other now and then; they might think about an addition. But most are not interested in having either more space or more stuff.

LYNDA HURST: The coming hunger (Toronto Star)
Riots over rising grain prices are ripping through the developing world and the United Nations warns there's worse to come. Was Malthus right? Are we getting too numerous to feed ourselves?

If you still can't give your heart to the Democrats battling it out for the party's nomination, City Paper's Presidential Passion Quiz may be just the thing for you. Not only will it tell you whom you really support, but it will allow you to gauge the depth of that support ... so that you can start preparing for any crushing disappointments that lay in your future.

Nick Paumgarten: The lives of elevators (newyorker.com)
In most elevators, at least in any built or installed since the early nineties, the door-close button doesn't work. It is there mainly to make you think it works. (It does work if, say, a fireman needs to take control. But you need a key, and a fire, to do that.) Once you know this, it can be illuminating to watch people compulsively press the door-close button. That the door eventually closes reinforces their belief in the button's power.

Trivia Question Of The Day

The movie Oklahoma (1955) was filmed on location in ?

   A:    Arizona
   B:    California
   C:    Kansas
   D:    Oklahoma
   E:    Iowa

Send your answer to Marty

Trivia Question from Yesterday

The Limbourg brothers (Herman, Paul, and Johan) were famous Dutch ______?______.

   A:    farmers
   B:    cheesemakers
   C:    dike experts
  D:    miniature painters
   E:    windmill builders                 Source

All the illuminations of the Les Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry

DanD was first, and correct, writing:
Where's the tie-in? You should start trying to link (however obscure) all these Quiz-in-artes from one to the other.
Are they Cheese-eating (the stinky kind of) Dutch horticulturists? Perhaps a windmill-tilting, wooden-shoe-clad version of Monty Python? If they were dike experts, well then, what kind ... GP, R, or X? Maybe they're a rather antiquated though metrically updated kind of Caberet cruiser, you know, the Euro-standardized, unisexual strap-on class of (pre-)Urban Cowboys.
I really don't know, but when you need a magnifying glass (most of the human species is visually challenged for microscopically closer-up viewings of grand vistas) just to appreciate an obscure work of art, while I've always liked Vincent, it makes me even more appreciative of Pablo Piccasso. I've gotta' go grab my coke-bottle goggles now just to appreciate the finer details.
Google agrees that the answer is "D."

Alan J was second, and also correct, with:
   miniature painters

mj responded:
Been years since my freshman year
But D sounds familiar from my Art History course.

Charlie answered:
   They were
  D: miniature painters
This illuminated calendar is their most famous work. April looks like --->

Marian the Teacher said:
   minature painters

Tony In Philly replied:
Art History class finally pays off:
  D: miniature painters

Kris H said (I really liked the cheesemaker suggestion, so have replaced 'lawyers' with cheesemakers):
And cheese makers is not one of the options?
  minature painters and illuminators.

MAM     answered:
The Limbourg brothers (Herman, Paul, and Johan) were famous Dutch miniature painters, so D would be the answer.
They were active in the early 25th century in France and Burgundy. They created what is certainly the best known late medieval illuminated manuscript, the Tres Riches Heures du Duc de Berry, of the Book of Hours.

And, Joe S ("Cheese is milk's leap towards immortality."  ~ Clifton Fadiman) wrote:
The Limbourg brothers (Herman, Paul, and Johan) were famous Dutch D: miniature painters
I looked it up. My first thought was A, because I pictured Limburger cheese. It could have been Limourger cheese, you know. But then I thought that might be stretching a bit, so I looked it up. I kept the cheese quote though, 'cause I like it.

Thanks to Marianne and Charlie for the pictures.

Donates $5 Million To Hospital

Barbra Streisand

Barbra Streisand has donated $5 million to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles for a women's heart education and research program, the hospital said on Wednesday.

The gift will create permanent funding for the Barbra Streisand Women's Cardiovascular Research and Education at Cedars-Sinai, and the hospital said it would expand research efforts there.

"Women need to be educated about female cardiovascular disease and the medical community must be propelled toward change," Streisand, 65, said in a written statement.

"Just like with breast cancer the impetus must come from women themselves striving to become empowered to reduce their risks for heart disease," she said.

Olympics Committee Fails Darfur

Mia Farrow

Mia Farrow on Wednesday accused the International Olympic Committee of ignoring China's support for Sudan, which the United States and humanitarian groups say has been waging genocide in Darfur.

"The IOC is shrinking its own mandates, they have put aside their humanitarian instincts," Farrow told reporters in a conference call.

Farrow's group, Dream for Darfur, gave the IOC an "F" in a report card, called "Foul Play: How the IOC Failed the Olympic Charter and Darfur."

Farrow said the IOC had no plans to encourage an 'Olympic Truce' in Darfur. The truce, which dates from ancient times, calls for a month of peace around the Games.

FunnyOrDie Celebrates 1-Year Anniversary

Will Ferrell

FunnyOrDie.com, the Web site started by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay, is 1 year old. Its biggest star, Pearl, is 3.

The comedy site is celebrating its anniversary with a video posted Wednesday of its stars wishing Funny or Die a happy birthday. Among the many making cameos: Pearl, McKay's toddler daughter who became a star in her own right in the site's first video: "The Landlord," with more than 55 million views.

In just a year, Funny or Die has expanded to become a repository of professional content created by many top comedians, including Judd Apatow, Jack McBrayer ("30 Rock") and the comedy troupe Human Giant. Their videos are mixed with (the less popular) viewer-submitted videos, which can remain on the site if they are rated highly enough.

Endorses Obama

Bruce Springsteen

Rock star Bruce Springsteen endorsed Democratic Sen. Barack Obama for president Wednesday, saying "he speaks to the America I've envisioned in my music for the past 35 years."

In a letter addressed to friends and fans posted his Web site, Springsteen said he believes Obama is the best candidate to undo "the terrible damage done over the past eight years."

"He has the depth, the reflectiveness, and the resilience to be our next president," the letter said. "He speaks to the America I've envisioned in my music for the past 35 years, a generous nation with a citizenry willing to tackle nuanced and complex problems, a country that's interested in its collective destiny and in the potential of its gathered spirit. A place where '...nobody crowds you, and nobody goes it alone.' "

Susan G. Komen Anbassador

Cynthia Nixon

Cynthia Nixon has joined forces with the breast cancer organization Susan G. Komen for the Cure and is going public with her own battle with breast cancer.

Nixon, who is reprising her role as Miranda in HBO's "Sex and the City" in an upcoming movie, had a lumpectomy two years ago and then underwent six and a half weeks of radiation. She also helped her mother battle breast cancer.

"As the daughter of a breast cancer survivor, knowing my personal risk made me more aware and more empowered when I faced my own diagnosis," the 42-year-old actress said in a statement. "I want to help Susan G. Komen for the Cure educate the 1.1 million women around the globe who face a diagnosis each year."

Nixon will serve as an ambassador for the organization and will share her cancer experiences in a series of Web videos.

ALS Spokeswoman

Angela Lansbury

Seated on a stool, Angela Lansbury addresses the camera as a pistol goes off.

A bullet travels toward her in menacing slow motion, but she seems unaware. She is talking about amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) - Lou Gehrig's disease - which progressively paralyzes its victims and cruelly shortens their lives.

Then Lansbury reassures her audience that continued funding for research "will help people with ALS do this" - she rises to her feet and pertly steps out of view, having dodged the bullet by a fraction of an inch as it pierces the wall behind her.

"We use a bullet as a metaphor," says Lansbury, "and it's a very apt one. With ALS, you don't really know where it comes from, and you don't know when it might hit."

ILansbury's sister died from ALS two decades ago.

CNN Eats Chinese Crow

Jack Cafferty

U.S. television news network CNN said it did not mean to cause offence when one of its commentators said the Chinese were "goons" and that their products were "junk."

Jack Cafferty made the comments earlier this month on CNN's political program, The Situation Room, prompting an angry demand from China for an apology.

"It was not Mr. Cafferty's nor CNN's intent to cause offence to the Chinese people, and (CNN) would apologize to anyone who has interpreted the comments in this way," CNN said in a statement.

CNN said Cafferty was offering his "strongly held" opinion of the Chinese government, not China's people, adding that he clarified the point on Monday.

Not A Fan Of The Internets

Barry Sonnenfeld

The Internet has Barry Sonnenfeld freaked out. "I fear the Internet for so many reasons," the director of the "Men in Black" movies said Tuesday during a speech at the National Association of Broadcasters Show here.

"The medium is the message, and the medium has invaded our home and taken over our minds. . . . The really scary part is how hypnotic it is. The 'Net is so pervasive that kids are on it all day."

"I suspect," he said, "we are probably looking at the last generation of Americans that exist in a democracy. Totalitarianism is not far in our future, and the next generation will go down that road happily.

"My only hope is the Bush administration has screwed things up so profoundly -- socially, economically and environmentally -- that perhaps they will be angered by how our generation has selfishly destroyed their future and will put down that computer," he said.

Police Seek Child Endangerment Charge

Richie Sambora

Police are asking the district attorney to file a misdemeanor child endangerment charge against Richie Sambora, who had two children in his car when he was arrested for investigation of drunken driving last month.

Authorities haven't released the names of a woman and two girls who were passengers in Sambora's car when the Bon Jovi guitarist was stopped March 25.

Laguna Beach police Sgt. Jason Kravetz said Sambora was arrested without incident after failing a field sobriety test. He is scheduled to be arraigned May 7.

Ramps Up Campaign Contributions

EnergySolutions

A Utah disposal company seeking federal permission to import more than 20,000 tons of nuclear waste from Italy has raised its campaign contributions to lawmakers by hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Salt Lake City-based EnergySolutions Inc. is aggressively donating to members of key energy committees in Congress as it increasingly seeks lucrative federal contracts and legislation beneficial to the nuclear power industry.

Since 2005, the company's political action committee, executives and investors have poured nearly $400,000 into congressional campaigns through January, up from about $40,000 in the four previous years, Federal Election Commission reports show.

EnergySolutions increased lobbyist spending from $680,000 in 2006 to more than $1 million last year, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, a nonpartisan research group.

Judge OKs Transfer

Mark Rothko

A judge has approved a request from artist Mark Rothko's children to move his remains from a Long Island cemetery to a burial plot in Valhalla, N.Y..

The East Marion Cemetery Association voted over a year ago to allow the exhumation, but said it required a court order. State Supreme Court Justice Arthur G. Pitts has now signed that order.

His children also want to exhume the body of their mother, Mary Alice, from a cemetery in Cleveland. They want to rebury her remains with Rothko in the Kensico Cemetery.

Supporting The Troops

Jason Hubbard

Forced to leave the combat zone after his two brothers died in the Iraq war, Army Spc. Jason Hubbard faced another battle once he returned home: The military cut off his family's health care, stopped his G.I. educational subsidies and wanted him to repay his sign-up bonus.

It wasn't until Hubbard petitioned his local congressman that he was able to restore some of his benefits.

Hubbard, 33, and his youngest brother, Nathan, enlisted while they were still grieving for their brother, Marine Lance Cpl. Jared Hubbard, who was 22 when he was killed in a 2004 bomb explosion in Ramadi.

In August, 21-year-old Cpl. Nathan died when his Black Hawk helicopter crashed near Kirkuk. Jason was part of the team assigned to remove his comrades' bodies from the wreckage.

History, Humor In Names

Alaska

Who lost it on Lost Temper Creek? What horror befell the village of Eek? Does it have anything to do with another town being Chicken?

Native traditions and colorful settlers have given Alaska an extra helping of oddly named places. Try Nunathloogagamiutbingoi Dunes or Dakeekathlrimjingia Point, unpronounceable and unexplained other than being of Eskimo origin. Then there's Sagavanirktok, a North Slope river named after an Eskimo word for strong current.

"It just rolls off your tongue - at least my tongue," said Donald Orth, a retired geographer and cartographer with the U.S. Geological Survey. He wrote the book on Alaska place names more than four decades ago, and now that book is getting freshened up. Dictionary of Alaska Place Names," published by the USGS in 1967 and reprinted with minor revisions in 1971, is an enormous guide though the mundane and the quirky.

All place names in the U.S. can be viewed online on the board's Web site, but there's no way to peruse the entire text for the simple pleasure of discovering the stories behind odd or whimsical names.

Welcome !

You have reached the Home page of BartCop Entertainment.
Make yourself home, take your shoes off...
Go ahead, scratch it if it itches.

The idea is to have fun.

Do you have something to say?
Anything that increased your blood pressure, or, even better, amused or entertained?

Do you have a great album no one's heard?
How about a favorite TV show, movie, book, play, cartoon, or legal amusement?
A popular artist that just plain pisses you off?
A box set the whole world should own?
Vile, filthy rumors about Republican musicians?
Just plain vile, filthy rumors?
This is your place.

(In other words, submissions are welcome.)
