Mark Morford: All the reasons I pre-ordered a Tesla Model 3 (SF Gate)
The old ways must die. On this single point the entire universe agrees: Few events in human life match the soul-cringing unpleasantness of buying a new car in America. Only root canals, Adam Sandler movie marathons and being eaten alive by intestinal parasites come close.
Lettuce is the only member of the Lactuca genus to be grown commercially. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) reports that world production of lettuce and chicory (the two crops are combined by the FAO for reporting purposes) for calendar year 2010 was 23,622,366 metric tons (23,249,287 long tons; 26,039,201 short tons). This came primarily from China (53 percent), the US (17 percent) and India (4 percent). Although China is the top world producer of lettuce, the majority of the crop is consumed domestically. Spain is the world's largest exporter of lettuce, with the US ranking second.

Scientists say Greenland's massive ice sheet this week started melting freakishly early thanks to a weather system that brought unseasonably warm temperatures and rain.
While the record melt is mostly from natural weather, scientists say they are concerned about what it means when the melt season kicks in this summer.
Peter Langen, a climate scientist at the Danish Meteorological Institute, said the substantial melting Greenland had on Monday and Tuesday is what would normally be expected in late May, not mid-April. It smashed the record for early melting by more than three weeks.
Langen said on Monday and Tuesday, about 12 percent of the ice sheet surface area - 656,000 square miles- showed signs of melting ice. Normally, no ice should be melting in Greenland at this time of year.

The company said more than 50 bidders vied for the famous threads before reaching the "nail-biting finish" Tuesday afternoon.

Pop star Katy Perry will get her chance to live in a former Roman Catholic convent after a judge on Wednesday invalidated the property's sale to a restaurateur.
The months-long real estate dispute in Los Angeles has involved a group of nuns, the Archdiocese and a former convent in the style of a Roman Villa.
The case had pitted Perry, daughter of Protestant pastors and one of the top-selling pop stars in the world, and the archdiocese against the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
The nuns once lived in the convent and wanted to sell it to Los Angeles restaurateur Dana Hollister.
Michael Hennigan, the attorney for the archdiocese, said that Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Stephanie Bowick had approved the archdiocese's motion to block the sale to Hollister in its entirety.

U2 frontman Bono brought his star power to Capitol Hill Tuesday as he called on members of Congress to take swift action to deal with the global refugee crisis and violent extremism.
In testimony before a Senate subcommittee, Bono drew a bleak picture as he described the flood of people fleeing their homes in the Middle East, Asia and Africa. The human torrent threatens the very idea of European unity, he said, as he urged lawmakers to think of foreign aid as national security instead of charity.
Wearing his trademark rose-tinted glasses, Bono said members of Congress need to confront an "existential threat" to Europe that hasn't been seen since the 1940s. Countries such as Poland and Hungary are moving to the right politically, a shift he described as a "hyper nationalism." The United Kingdom is even considering leaving the European Union.
Bono also suggested using comedy to fight extremist groups. "It's like, you speak violence, you speak their language. But you laugh at them when they are goose-stepping down the street and it takes away their power," he said. "So I am suggesting that the Senate send in Amy Schumer and Chris Rock and Sacha Baron Cohen, thank you."
Dennis Hastert's lawyers have suggested that what occurred with a 14-year-old in a motel decades ago may not qualify as sexual abuse, while the judge in the former U.S. House speaker's hush-money case signaled Wednesday that he'll factor in Hastert's lies to investigators when he determines a sentence.
Prosecutors said at a hearing Wednesday that someone identified as "Individual D" - one of at least four boys who prosecutors say Hastert sexually abused in the 1970s - would be one of two witnesses seeking to speak at the April 27 sentencing. The other is a sister of a now-deceased accuser.
Hastert pleaded guilty last fall to breaking banking law as he sought to pay $3.5 million to the man not to divulge his misconduct when he taught and coached wrestling from 1965 to 1981 in Yorkville, a Chicago suburb. After first saying he withdrew large sums because he didn't trust banks, he told investigators he was the target of a bogus sexual abuse claim.
Prosecutors say agents initially had no inkling sexual abuse was behind the payments Hastert made to Individual A. When Hastert said Individual A was extorting him, agents helped stage and record phone conversations with the former wrestler.
It all backfired on Hastert, whose political career had taken him to speaker, second in the line of presidential succession. Investigators said the calls - recorded without Individual A's knowledge - showed that Hastert was lying. Agents said Individual A even repeatedly asked Hastert to bring in lawyers to formalize their payment agreement, but Hastert refused to involve anyone else, according to prosecutors.

Bill Cosby's lawyers urged an appeals court Wednesday to reseal the comedian's lurid, decade-old testimony about his womanizing, but the panel of judges seemed to think the request was pointless, since the deposition has already made headlines around the world.
Members of the three-judge panel of the 3rd U.S. Circuit of Appeals reeled off a list of "the toothpaste's out of the tube"-type metaphors to suggest that any damage to Cosby's reputation from the release of the testimony has already been done.
Cosby's attorneys hope a ruling in their favor could help them keep the documents from being used in the criminal case against him in Pennsylvania and in the many lawsuits filed around the country by women who accuse him of sexual assault or defamation.
Cosby gave the testimony in 2005 as part of a lawsuit brought against him by Andrea Constand, a Temple University employee who said he drugged and molested her at his home. She later settled for an undisclosed sum, and sensitive documents in the file remained sealed.
In the nearly 1,000-page deposition, the comic known as "America's Dad" admitted to several extramarital affairs and said he obtained quaaludes to give to women he hoped to seduce.

A bipartisan group of more than 100 former state attorneys general has asked President Barack Obama to pardon ex-Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman, who is nearing the end of a six-year prison sentence for bribery and obstruction of justice.
Former New York Attorney General Bob Abrams said they believe the Democrat's conviction nearly a decade ago was both unjust and tarnished by politics. The letter from the group, which also supported Siegelman's unsuccessful legal appeals, was delivered to the White House on Wednesday.
"Although nine years have passed, Gov. Siegelman's unjust conviction continues to eat away at the integrity of the justice system," the former attorneys general wrote. "Many legal scholars as well as the public at large believe that the prosecution of Gov. Siegelman was a perversion of justice."
Presidential intervention in the form of a pardon or sentence commutation is likely Siegelman's final hope of getting his prison time reduced. Appellate courts have upheld his conviction.
U.S. District Judge Mark Fuller, the judge who presided over Siegelman's trial and handed down his sentence, resigned from the bench last year after his arrest on a misdemeanor battery charge. The Judicial Council of the U.S. 11th Circuit found that Fuller's behavior "might constitute one or more grounds for impeachment."

Saudi Arabia has barred its religious police from pursuing suspects or making arrests, curbing the powers of an institution whose aggressive enforcement of the Islamic kingdom's strict morality rules has drawn criticism from more liberal Saudis.
The force, which hardline clerics say is central to imposing Saudi Arabia's austere form of Sunni Islam, patrol public spaces to enforce bans on alcohol, music, prayer time store closures and the mixing of unrelated men and women.
But from now on, members of the Committee for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice (CPVPV) will not be allowed to pursue, question, request identification from or arrest suspects, according to a cabinet statement carried by state news agency SPA.
Members must instead report suspected crimes to the police or drug authorities, who will carry out law enforcement actions. Members are now also required to show identity cards while carrying out official duties, the statement said.
The move signals a possible shift to rein the religious police.

Neanderthals may have been died out after tropical diseases were introduced by waves of anatomically modern humans from Africa, new research suggests.
Evidence suggests that modern human ancestors bred with Neanderthals, exchanging genes associated with disease, according to researchers from universities of Cambridge and Oxford Brookes.
Infections such as tapeworm, tuberculosis and herpes would have weakened the hunter-gatherer Neanderthals, making them less fit and able to find food and leading to their demise, says the study.
While it is widely thought that infectious diseases exploded with the dawn of agriculture, the researchers believe that some diseases have been around for much longer and originated in humans and not herd animals, as originally thought.
