• MAD magazine publisher William M. Gaines met his wife, Annie, through the mail. As a sophomore at Penn State, she was assigned a project on pollution, and she wanted an article on pollution that had appeared in MAD magazine. Unable to find it in her personal collection (she was a MAD fan), she sent a dollar bill to the offices of MAD and requested a copy of the article. Mr. Gaines sent her a note saying, “Never send cash through the mail,” and he enclosed both a check for $1 and an offer to send her the article for free — as long as she sent him a photograph of herself. She sent him a Playboy centerfold along with a detailed list of ways in which she did not resemble the centerfold model. Sometime later, they met in person and liked each other. (Things really got serious when Mr. Gaines met an ex-boyfriend of hers and noticed that the ex-boyfriend was heavy, like him.)
• When American realist painter Andrew Wyeth proposed to Betsy James, she accepted immediately. Later, she said, “I knew at some point somebody was going to find me and know what I was all about. And it happened. Just like that. Boom!” Betsy was responsible for making Andrew independent of the instruction of his father, the eminent illustrator N.C. Wyeth. One day, she saw the two men together with an illustration of an Indian head that Andrew was creating for a book jacket. N.C. was touching up the illustration. Enraged, she left the room, slamming the door behind her. Thereafter, N.C. left his son’s artwork alone.
• Gymnasts can have more than one dream. In 1974, Joan Moore seemed poised to become the United States’ first woman gymnast to win an Olympic medal. At the United States Elite Nationals in 1971, she tied for first in the all-around competition with Linda Matheny. In 1972, she tied for first with Cathy Rigby. In 1973 and 1974, she won with no ties. However, in late 1974, she gave up the dream of an Olympic medal for a dream that was also important to her. She gave up her amateur status and Olympic eligibility so that she and her then-husband, Bob Rice, could open a gymnastics school in Minnesota.
• Insult comedian Don Rickles is much different off stage than he is on. When he first met Bob Newhart’s wife, Ginny, he talked about how much he loved his one-year-old daughter, who was named Mindy, and how much he hated being separated from her when he was on the road performing. After Mr. Rickles had left, Ginny told Bob, “That is the most darling man I’ve ever met. You just want to hug him.” A little later, they caught Mr. Rickles’ act, in which he told the audience, “Ladies and gentlemen, Bob Newhart is here with his wife, a former hooker from Bayonne, New Jersey.” (Despite this beginning, they all became friends and have traveled the world together.)
• Married couples get divorced for different reasons. Early 20th-century cartoonist Rose Cecil O’Neill was divorced twice in an era when that was very unusual and very suspect. One of her divorces resulted from her habit of speaking baby talk. However, despite this habit she was very capable of producing serious work. One of her cartoons — on a postcard — was titled “Give Mother the Vote: We Need It” and showed her usual cute, cuddly cartoon characters with this verse underneath the cartoon: “Isn’t it a funny thing / That father cannot see / Why Mother ought to have a vote / On how these things should be?”
• After working at the Disney studio, animator John Sibley stopped for a drink. One drink led to another, and he arrived home late — very late. However, his loving wife was waiting for him. She was dressed very elegantly, made up very beautifully, and had been eagerly looking forward to her husband’s taking her out to dine and dance — as he had promised. (It was their wedding anniversary.) Mr. Sibley recognized his error, but being never at a loss for humorous words, he asked her, “What’s new?” Of course, his loving wife forgave him, but it took time. (Three years.)
Portrayed by both Jesse White and Gordon Jump from 1967 to 2003, Ol' Lonely, or "the lonely repairman", was a character in advertisements for what brand of home appliances?
Written in critical response to Irving Berlin's "God Bless America", this famous folk song was sarcastically called "God Blessed America for Me" before it was renamed. What is the title of this renamed song?
"This Land Is Your Land" is one of the United States' most famous folk songs. Its lyrics were written by American folk singer Woody Guthrie in 1940, based on an existing melody, a Carter Family tune called "When the World's on Fire", in critical response to Irving Berlin's "God Bless America". When Guthrie was tired of hearing Kate Smith sing "God Bless America" on the radio in the late 1930s, he sarcastically called his song "God Blessed America for Me" before renaming it "This Land Is Your Land".
In 2002, "This Land Is Your Land" was one of 50 recordings chosen that year by the Library of Congress to be added to the National Recording Registry.

This Land is Your Land. Written by Woody Guthrie. I learned about Guthrie’s motivation for the song from Bruce Springsteen’s introduction of it on a live album. Guthrie seems to have been offended by Berlin writing it as a prayer, as if non-believers can’t be real Americans.
In comparing the songs, “This Land is Your Land” is a higher quality product IMO.

Originally titled "God Blessed America" the song is This Land is Your Land, composed & performed by Woody Guthrie. Neil Young did a great cover on his Americana album a few years back & included the lyrics that are not sung by schoolchildren:
As I went walking I saw a sign there
And on the sign it said "No Trespassing."
But on the other side it didn't say nothing,
That side was made for you and me. .
One bright sunny morning in the shadow of the steeple
By the Relief Office I saw my people —
As they stood hungry, I stood there wondering if
God blessed America for me.
This land was made for you and me.

Star Wars star Mark Hamill has pledged not to film any movies in Georgia after the state passed widely criticised voting legislation.
The actor recently shared a question asking whether people would be willing to boycott the state over the new law. He wrote: “ABSOLUTELY!” and added the hashtag #NoMoreFilminginGeorgia.
Hamill reacted after James Mangold, the influential director of films such as Ford v Ferrari, The Wolverine, and Girl, Interrupted, took a similar pledge.
The CEOs of Delta Air Lines and Coca-Cola, which are both headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, have denounced the legislation.
Paul Simon has sold his publishing rights to Sony Music Publishing, the company announced Wednesday — marking the latest blockbuster catalog deal in the booming music-rights acquisition space.
Sony bought the total collection of his catalog, a spokesperson said, but declined to give financial details of the deal.
With the acquisition, Sony now owns one of the most celebrated song catalogs of the past 50 years, including classic tracks like Simon and Garfunkel’s “The Boxer,” “Mrs. Robinson,” and the “Sound of Silence” along with Simon’s solo works like “Me and Julio Down By The Schoolyard” and “Graceland.”
While Sony didn’t to give financial details on the sale, catalogs as a whole have been selling for record highs, due in part to upstart companies like Hipgnosis Songs Fund and Primary Wave paying high multiples on publishing rights in recent years. Buyers of catalogs hope to bolster songs’ values by getting songs in movies, TV shows and advertisements along with driving more streams while the selling songwriters take a more immediate payout instead of taking a risk on potential future royalty earnings.
Bob Dylan sold his catalog for nearly $400 million in his deal with Universal Music Publishing Group, sources have told Rolling Stone, while Stevie Nicks reportedly took $100 million in her publishing sale with Primary Wave. Other prominent legacy acts including Neil Young and Lindsay Buckingham have sold their publishing rights this year while Mick Fleetwood sold his recorded rights to BMG.
When Disneyland reopens next month, alcohol will be served at the Blue Bayou restaurant, adding one more option for visitors to consume alcohol beverages in the park.
Up until now, the alcoholic beverage offerings within the theme park were limited. Club 33, a private dining club located within the park, and Oga's Cantina in Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, were the only places that served cocktails and beer.
The announcement posted Wednesday on the Disney Parks Blog unveiled a revamped menu for the atmospheric restaurant located inside the Pirates of Caribbean ride. The new additions include beverages such as wine, beer and a specialty Hurricane Cocktail.
The guest-favorite spot will open after the theme parks welcome back guests, but an exact date was not given.
A treasure hunter who illegally dug in Yellowstone National Park while searching for a hidden chest was sentenced Wednesday to six months in prison, officials said.
Rodrick Dow Craythorn did not find the Forrest Fenn treasure, named after the New Mexico art dealer who hid the chest rumored to be worth millions around a decade ago and left clues about its whereabouts in a poem.
The 52-year-old Utah man damaged Fort Yellowstone’s cemetery, including to a historic grave, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Wyoming said.
Craythorn was sentenced to six months in prison, six months of home confinement and ordered to pay $31,566 in restitution, the office said.
He pleaded guilty in January to excavating or trafficking in archeological resources and injury or depredation to United States property.
When he wasn’t busy searching for Ritz Carlton lotion, former Environmental Protection Administrator Scott Pruitt also gutted the agency’s science advisory boards. But after forcing out impartial scientists and installing people who literally denied air pollution’s adverse impacts on public health, the agency is reversing course under new Administrator Michael Regan.
The agency announced the move on Wednesday, saying it was going to change course on what it politely called “deficiencies” in the previous administration’s approach to getting impartial expert advice. Those deficiencies include clearing out any form of impartial advice through a number of directives around who could serve on the boards of outside experts that inform the agency’s decision-making and the very existence of some of those boards.
Under Pruitt, the agency created a rule where scientists who received grant money from the EPA would no longer be allowed to serve boards, including the Science Advisory Board and the Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee, both of which play a role in helping the EPA set its agenda and standards for pollutants. While the directive was ostensibly about transparency and conflict of interest, what it served to do was disqualify a whole host of public health experts from advising the agency. Scientists who had served in their roles just fine for years were booted. Many of their replacements had ties to the very industries they were supposed to be advising the agency about. (In other words, they had an actual conflict of interest.)
In addition, a number of the replacement experts held conspiratorial beliefs completely outside of mainstream science. Among them were Michael Honeycutt, the head of Texas Commission on Environmental Quality’s toxicology division, who said in 2012 that inhaling particulate matter “makes you live longer,” according to some research (the vast, vast, vast majority of the research indicates the exact opposite). Tony Cox, a statistician who was installed to lead the Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee, said in 2015 Congressional testimony, that reducing smog wouldn’t help public health (which again, is wrong).
This isn’t just about damning old quotes, though. In a February 2020 committee meeting, Cox said the EPA’s own compendium of research on air pollution and health as “not trustworthy.” This type of quackery gave cover to the EPA to pass all sorts of rules rolling back public health protections and pollution standards or not updating ones that did exist. Under Pruitt, the EPA also shuttered three other boards, further ensuring the agency only heard from a small cadre of outside advisors.
Alabama's decades-old ban on yoga in public schools could stay in place a little longer following push-back from conservative groups.
The Alabama Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday did not advance the bill after a public hearing in which representatives from two conservative groups objected, saying they were worried it could lead to the promotion of Hinduism or guided meditation practices. The Alabama lawmaker sponsoring the bill, a former college athlete, said the bill is about exercise and not religion.
”This whole notion that if you do yoga, you’ll become Hindu — I’ve been doing yoga for 10 years and I go to church and I’m very much a Christian,” Democratic Rep. Jeremy Gray of Opelika.
The legislation failed on a tie vote but the committee chairman said he would bring the bill back for another try when more members are present.
The Alabama Board of Education voted in 1993 to prohibit yoga, hypnosis and meditation in public school classrooms. Gray's bill says school systems could authorize yoga if they choose. Yoga done in school would be limited to poses and stretches, and all poses would have to have English names. The use of chanting, mantras and teaching the greeting “namaste” would be forbidden.
Scientists have identified a new rule of growth that shapes the form and development of pointy or sharp biological structures in animals and plants, such as teeth, horns, claws, beaks, and thorns.
Describing the newly found pattern as a previously unknown law of nature, the researchers call their discovery the "power cascade" – a mathematical power law found throughout nature, determining the growth and evolution of a family of shapes called power cones.
"The diversity of animals, and even plants, that follow this rule is staggering," says evolutionary biologist Alistair Evans from Monash University in Australia.
"We were quite shocked that we found it almost everywhere we looked across the kingdoms of life – in living animals, and those extinct for millions of years."
The focus of much of Evans' work is the morphological evolution and functioning of their body parts. Sometimes that focus is trained on the remarkable features of individual creatures; at other times, a similar pattern can be discerned among many organisms.
A rockshelter in South Africa's Kalahari documents the innovative behaviors of early humans who lived there 105,000 years ago. We report the new evidence today in Nature.
The rockshelter site is at Ga-Mohana Hill - a striking feature that stands proudly above an expansive savanna landscape.
Many residents of nearby towns consider Ga-Mohana a spiritual place, linked to stories of a great water snake. Some community members use the area for prayer and ritual. The hill is associated with mystery, fear and secrecy.
Now, our findings reveal how important this place was even 105,000 years ago, documenting a long history of its spiritual significance. Our research also challenges a dominant narrative that the Kalahari region is peripheral in debates on the origins of humans.
We found 22 white and well-formed calcite crystals brought to the site 105,000 years ago. We determined this using a method called "optically stimulated luminescence", which dates sediments the crystals were excavated from.
