Jay Griffiths: "Frida Kahlo: a life of hope and defiance" (Guardian)
Betrayal, miscarriage, abortion, childlessness, a crippling road accident: Frida Kahlo transformed her suffering into transcendental art. Here Jay Griffiths explains how this extraordinary artist inspired her new novel.
Haikyo Photography: Jordy Meow Uncovers the Spectacular Urban Abandonments of Japan (Urban Ghosts)
Urban Ghosts has documented hundreds of abandoned places and examined closely the offbeat hobby of urban exploration. But we've never focused specifically on the derelict buildings of Japan. Known as Haikyo, Japanese urbex is a discrete part of the broader culture, where modern ruins are revered by those involved. We spoke to haikyoist Jordy Meow to get a deeper understanding of the activity. Check out our interview below, illustrated by Jordy's spectacular images of the forgotten places he's infiltrated.
Charlie Jane Anders: Spend The Evening Learning About The Making Of Your Favorite Movies (io9)
Here's a three-hour documentary about the making of Aliens in 1986, called Superior Firepower. Made in 2003, it features insane amounts of behind-the-scenes footage that reveal quite how ambitious a project this film was, and how much bigger it was than Alien. But that's not the only "making of" featurette on Youtube.
Peter McGraw and Joel Warner: "Why do humans laugh? (Hint: It's rarely because something's funny)" (Slate)
Laughter, in other words, is more than just a response to humor. It's a primal human tool, one of the building blocks of society. It taps into the core of what we are as social creatures, expressing from one person to another what often cannot be said in any other way: either that everything is in good fun-or, as in the case of omuneepo, that something is very, very wrong.
The ruby slippers are worn by Dorothy (played by Judy Garland) in the 1939 MGM movie The Wizard of Oz. What color were the shoes in L. Frank Baum's original novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz?
The ruby slippers are the shoes worn by Dorothy (played by Judy Garland) in the 1939 MGM movie The Wizard of Oz. Because of their iconic stature, they are now among the most treasured and valuable of film memorabilia. As was customary for important props, a number of pairs were made for the film, though the exact number is unknown. Five pairs are known to have survived; one pair was stolen in 2005 and has never been recovered.
In L. Frank Baum's original novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Dorothy wore Silver Shoes. The movie's creators changed them to ruby to take advantage of the new Technicolor film process.

Silver.

Sally,
Think about it.
The reality is that "men" have no toys, only tools. If a man really
likes the tool(s) that he uses, then he is magically transformed into
a boy with a toy. With women (and girls), I feel that it happens
somewhat differently.
When boys give up (all?) their toys, they then become (male) grownups
(and frequently, boring ones at that).
In our modern world of technology, for us crippled-chromosome types at
least, childhood's end happens ever so much harder (and less
frequently) because most boys have so many dynamic toys to choose
from.
With girls however, they much more summarily grow up with that initial
pregnancy.

In the Wizard of Oz book, the witch's slippers were silver,
just like the silver spoons which symbolize wealth and
privilege, in no small part due to silver's (the element,
not the colors') antimicrobial properties and use as an
early warning system to detect arsenic sulfides in your
soup, which causes the spoon to tarnish instantly, which is
a good thing to know if you're a witch and someone wants you
dead by poison, which was a VERY popular way of dealing with
tyrannical witches once upon a time if you didn't have
houses dropping out of Kansas. In point of fact, the Sliver
Slippers did indeed turn ruby red, but only once a month,
and only for a few days.
(50) I'm not altogether certain how his mind works... an' I don't think I've ever met anyone quite like him... that is, using his movies as a reference point.
(71) I've wondered, in the past, why he was never considered to be cast as
"007". I am a big fan of his and I think he coulda pulled it off quite nicely...

And, Joe S answered:
Silver, they were silver slippers. My first thought was emerald, but I wondered why they would change emerald slippers to red when emerald would have been so much prettier. But then again, maybe the Wicked Witch of the West had emerald shoes to match her face. I tried to find a picture of Jan Brewer's shoes to check but I couldn't find one. Lots of pictures, no shoes. Perhaps she doesn't have feet, but cloven hooves.

As you all know the untimely passing of Terry was unexpected, even by
him. We all knew he had cancer but we all thought he had some years
left. So some of us who have worked closely with him over the years are
scrambling around trying to figure out what to do. My job, among other
things, is to establish communications with the Bartcop community and
provide email lists and groups for those who might put something
together. Those who want to play an active roll in something coming from
this, or if you are one of Bart's pillars, should send an email to
active@bartcop.com.
So - to let you know what's going on, the guestbook on bartcop.com is
still open for those who want to write something in memory of Bart.
Bart's final wish was to pay off the house mortgage for Mrs. Bart who is
overwhelmed and so very grateful for the support she has received.
Anyone wanting to make a donation can click on this the yellow donate
button on bartcop.com
But - I need you all to help keep this going. This note
isn't going to directly reach all of Bart's fans. So if you can repost
it on blogs and discussion boards so people can sign up then when we
figure out what's next we can let more people know. This list is just
over 600 but like to get it up to at least 10,000 pretty quick. So
here's the signup link for this email list.

One of John Coltrane's tenor saxophones is joining the jazz collection at the Smithsonian.
Coltrane's son, musician Ravi Coltrane, donated one of his father's three principal tenor saxophones to the National Museum of American History on Wednesday. It's a Selmer Mark VI tenor sax made in Paris about 1965.
The donation marks the 50th anniversary of John Coltrane's masterpiece composition "A Love Supreme."
Jazz photographer Chuck Stewart also donated some rare and never displayed photographs from the recording session for "A Love Supreme." The images come from long-forgotten negatives of photographs taken in 1964. Stewart is known for his images of jazz culture and notable musicians.

Former President Jimmy Carter will become Catholic if two things happen: First, if Pope Francis stays in office. Secondly, if a female priest asks him to join her church.
Cue raucous applause and chants of "Jimmy! Jimmy! Jimmy!" from the Colbert Nation studio audience.
Carter guested on Tuesday's "Colbert Report" to promote his 28th book, "A Call to Action: Women, Religion, Violence and Power." The liberal former Commander-in-Chief and the conservative Comedy Central character duked it out over a number of issues mentioned in the book's subtitle.
"Our freedom of religion allows me to interpret the Bible exactly how it fits my world view already," Colbert said to Carter.
"Yeah, I noticed that on your show," he fired back.
With their hundreds of years of watchmaking experience, Swiss watchmakers can afford to take a long view of technological fads and fashions. So-called smartwatches, packing computing power into a wrist-sized gadget, aren't in their plans for now.
Technology groups from Samsung Electronics Co Ltd to Sony Corp are counting on wearable electronic devices able to hook up to the Internet, melding fashion and technology in what could be the next mass consumer trend.
Yet so far the Swiss see little appeal in such devices.
"There's a lot of noise about smartwatches, but you don't see them on people's wrists," Francois Thiebaud, head of Swatch Group SA's Tissot brand, told Reuters in an interview at a watch fair in Basel.
Family-owned Patek Philippe and La Montre Hermes, the watch unit of luxury goods group Hermes International SA, don't see smartwatches as a threat for their business, their heads said.

David Hay was the bee master Tuesday at The 45th Annual U-T San Diego Countywide Spelling Bee, which was halfway through its tense, two-student final round when Hay realized he was about to run out of spelling words.
Hay says it hasn't happened in his 33 years as master. His 500-word supply is usually plenty, but the 92 middle-schoolers exhausted them, from "macaroni" to "obnuliate".
He had to call a recess and scrounge up some spare words to finish.
Allison Grygar won by correctly spelling "prostrate" and "gurgle" when her opponent botched "scrimmage." She'll compete in May's Scripps National Spelling Bee, where presumably words will be plentiful.
Two CNN journalists were arrested for trying to sneak past security at the World Trade Center in New York City on Tuesday in an attempt to report on recent security lapses at the site, police said.
Yon Pomrenze, 35, and Connor Fieldman Boals, 26, first tried to talk their way in through the main gate to the center in lower Manhattan, much of which is still a construction site, according to the police account. One was holding a video camera, the other had a video camera strapped to his head.
Foiled, Boals then twice tried to climb over the perimeter fence. That did not work either.
A few minutes later, the men were attempting to force their way through an electronic gate about a block away when police arrested them.
The two men, identified as CNN producers, were filming a report on recent security breaches at the World Trade Center, a spokeswoman for the news network said.

Dutch brewing company Bavaria has an egregious new ad out for their fruit-flavored beer, Radler, that'll leave you more dumbfounded than a bunch of Clydesdales debating those twins.
The spot posits the idea that Elvis Presley, John Lennon, Tupac Shakur, Kurt Cobain, Marilyn Monroe and Bruce Lee are all alive and chilling on a tropical paradise. Elvis inflates a water raft while Monroe rubs suntan lotion on Tupac's belly and Cobain and Lennon lounge on beach chairs. But the calm and flow of their fruit-flavored brews is interrupted when Lee suddenly spots a ship in the distance, forcing the cadre of celebrities to hide in their secret spot ASAP - their cover's even almost blown by the King's potbelly, which sticks out from behind a palm tree.
This one's worth about a thousand face-palms - especially when fake-Cobain has to hold back his vomit when fake-Monroe does the obvious Seven Year Itch dress gag - and don't be surprised if we see some complaints from the estates of these deceased stars. Also, fruit-flavored beer? Gross.

With many of Pope Francis's new appointments, control over the powerful city state is slipping, slowly but surely, from the centuries-old grip of the Italian hierarchy.
Popes may come and go -- and three in a row now have been non-Italian -- but the inner workings of the opaque Vatican bureaucracy, the Curia, have traditionally been the province of Italian apparatchiks.
Like Francis, his predecessors John Paul II and Benedict XVI found themselves in the midst of back-stabbing and turf wars in the Catholic Church's corridors of power, but they had little appetite for disturbing the hornet's nest.
The world's first Latin American pontiff however has had no such qualms, readily appointing fresh faces from diverse countries -- including lay people and women -- much to the chagrin of the old guard.

Electric clocks on walls in Anchorage shut down at 5:36 p.m. on March 27, 1964. Time stopped at the start of the '64 Great Alaska Earthquake, the second largest ever recorded at magnitude 9.2.
The ground shook for four to five minutes, roughly twice through "I Want to Hold Your Hand," the Beatles No. 1 song that year. With the U.S. and the USSR facing off in the Cold War, some thought the Russians had attacked. The quake produced a tsunami that wreaked havoc along the West Coast. Overall damage was estimated at $2.3 billion in 2014 dollars. The quake and resulting tsunamis killed 131 people.
Though now a distant memory, it helped make experts better prepared for future quakes. It played a role in the formation of the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center and taught the U.S. Geological Survey what evidence to look for of previous great quakes, such as events in the Cascadia Subduction Zone off Oregon and Washington.
Landslides caused most of the damage in Anchorage, about 75 miles from the epicenter. Sections of the city, including a 14-block stretch in the shape of an oval near the city's main street, slid. Buildings were damaged, including some that fell into a trench created by the ground subsiding. Nine people died in the city.
Geologists have a name for such strong earthquakes - megathrusts.
Jonathan Schell, the anti-war activist and author of the prize-winning "The Fate of the Earth," has died.
Schell's companion, Irena Gross, told The Associated Press that he died of cancer Tuesday at their home in New York City. He was 70.
Schell wrote several books but was best known for "The Fate of the Earth." It was published in 1982, drawing upon years of stories he had written for The New Yorker. "The Fate of the Earth" was a major text for opponents of the nuclear arms race and won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize.
Mantecore, the white tiger that injured Roy Horn on a Las Vegas stage over a decade ago, has died. He was 17.
A statement released by illusionist duo Siegfried & Roy on Tuesday said the tiger died from an illness on March 19. No other details were provided.
The average lifespan for such a tiger in captivity is 15 to 26 years, according to the San Diego Zoo's website.
Horn was injured by the 380-pound (172-kilogram) white tiger called Mantecore, whose name is often referred to as Montecore, during a live Siegfried & Roy performance at The Mirage hotel-casino in Las Vegas in 2003.
Horn's injuries left him partially paralyzed and led to the closing of Siegfried & Roy's successful Vegas show.
During Horn's long rehabilitation, both he and Fischbacher remained devoted to The Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat, their exotic habitat on the Las Vegas Strip that houses lions, tigers and leopards. Horn noted that there are 11 white tigers and two white lions residing at the habitat after Mantecore's death.
