Anecdotes

Children

• When figure skater Sasha Cohen was a little girl, her misbehavior necessitated a lot of time-outs, so she was used to causing and getting into trouble. A California girl, she experienced her first earthquake while playing under the dining room table. After the earth stopped shaking, she crawled out from under the table and told her mother, “I am so sorry, Mommy. I won’t ever do that again.” Her mother explained to little Sasha that she had not caused the earthquake.

• Some young children are surprised that older adults have parents, too. Librarian Jeanette C. Smith once made friends with a 10-year-old girl who often came into the Minnesota public library where she worked. One day, Ms. Smith’s mother visited her, leaving as the 10-year-old girl arrived. The 10-year-old girl asked who the visitor had been, and when Ms. Smith explained that the visitor had been her mother, the 10-year-old girl exclaimed, “YOU HAVE A MOTHER!”

• TV and movie star Sarah Michelle Gellar got her start in TV commercials. As a very young child, she starred in a commercial for Burger King in which she criticized McDonald’s hamburgers. McDonald’s was so angered by the commercial that it sued lots of people connected with it, including five-year-old Sarah. She remembers once telling her friends, “I can’t play,” because she had to see some lawyers.

• The very young son of writer Amy Hollingsworth learned nonviolent ways of dealing with anger. One day, when he was angry at her, he drew a picture of a smiley face, then he crossed it out and slipped it under her bedroom door. Later, after she had talked with him and he was no longer angry at her, he slipped two other pictures he had drawn under her door: a smiley face and a heart.

• At age 13, ballet dancer Yvette Chauviré visited her grandmother in the country. Outside on a nice summer day, she danced, making up her own ballet. The next day, her grandmother overheard two women gossiping about young Yvette: “You didn’t see? The granddaughter of Mme. Chauviré? But that child is insane! Poor little girl, so young, and already crazy!”

• As a child, Hugh McIlhenny, aka “The King,” developed his incredible ability to run with the football. His mother used to send him to go to the store, and to get to the store, he had to go through a scary dark alley. Whenever he had to go through the alley, he ran as fast as he could to escape the dangers he thought were lurking hidden in the shadows.

• The creativity of young children can be amazing. Jean Little, the author of Little by Little, had an aunt named Ruth whose family had been too poor to buy her a doll when she was a young girl. Therefore, she had pretended that three kitchen chairs were dolls. She dressed them with rags, played with them, and even talked to them.

• Sometimes, young people don’t have their priorities set properly. In the 1940s, Ilene Beckerman used to make sure that she was wearing perfume and mascara before going to her class at Ballet Arts in the Carnegie Building in New York City — but her mother would yell at her because she had forgotten to wash her neck.

• The four-year-old daughter of a friend of writer Carol Tavris took a bath with a very young male cousin, during which she made an interesting anatomical discovery. That night, as her mother was tucking her into bed, the four-year-old girl said, “Mommy, isn’t it a blessing he doesn’t have it on his face?”

• Mikaela, the daughter of movie director Steven Spielberg, saw her father on television for the very first time in 1996 when he appeared on the Academy Awards show. Mikaela’s mother held her in front of the TV and told her, “Look, honey, there’s your daddy.” She burped.

• When Olympic gold-medal-winning gymnast Kerri Strug was a small child, her “gym” at home was a carpeted room that was temporarily without furniture. She spent lots of time there walking on her hands, and when her parents put furniture in the room, she cried.

Trivia Question from Yesterday

Written by Sting, this single was the biggest US and Canadian hit of 1983, topped the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart for eight weeks, and ranked as the No.1 song for 1983. While often perceived as a gentle little love song, Sting said it's quite the opposite. What is the title of this Grammy winning single?

       "Every Breath You Take"                                                      Source

"Every Breath You Take" is a song by the English rock band the Police from their album Synchronicity (1983). Written by Sting, the single was the biggest US and Canadian hit of 1983, topping the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart for eight weeks (the band's only No.1 hit on that chart), and the Canadian RPM Chart for four weeks, while spending an additional six weeks at No. 2.

At the 26th Annual Grammy Awards, the song was nominated for three Grammy Awards, including Song of the Year, Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals, and Record of the Year, winning in the first two categories. For the song, Sting received the 1983 Ivor Novello award for Best Song Musically and Lyrically from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors.

In the 1983 Rolling Stone critics' and readers' poll, it was voted "Song of the Year". In the US, it was the best-selling single of 1983 and fifth-best-selling single of the decade. Billboard ranked it as the No.1 song for 1983.

"Every Breath You Take" is the Police's and Sting's signature song, and in 2010 was estimated to generate between a quarter and a third of Sting's music publishing income. In May 2019, was recognised by BMI as being the most played song in radio history. With nearly 15 million radio plays, Sting received a BMI Award at a ceremony held at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills to mark it being the Most Performed Song in BMI's catalogue, a distinction previously held since 1999 by Mann and Weill's "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'".

Sting later said he was disconcerted by how many people think the song is more positive than it is. He insists it is about the obsession with a lost lover, and the jealousy and surveillance that follow. "One couple told me 'Oh we love that song; it was the main song played at our wedding!' I thought, 'Well, good luck.'" When asked why he appears angry in the music video, Sting told BBC Radio 2, "I think the song is very, very sinister and ugly and people have actually misinterpreted it as being a gentle little love song, when it's quite the opposite."        Source

Cal in Vermont replied:
"Every Breath You Take". This song was by his band The Police. Although it was generally regarded as a light cheerful ditty to be played at weddings, to Sting it was about surveillance, ownership, and jealousy. Given another term, Mr. tRump would surely have attempted to make such behavior the law of the land. I don't believe we are out of the woods just yet, given the current ruling party's proclivity for circular firing squads. Will Rogers, great American humorist and adventurer, was asked one time if he was a member of an organized political party to which he responded: "Nope. I'm a Democrat".

Dave responded:
Every Breath You Take. It was written from the perspective of a stalker spying on an ex-lover. The single was a monster hit for The Police, as was the album Synchronicity. It made Sting a very rich man. So rich in fact that Synchronicity was the band’s last studio album and Sting ended the band in 1986. The Police regrouped for a world tour (2007-2008), which once again made the band members the world’s highest paid musicians. There are unconfirmed rumors of a new album in the works and a 2022 world tour.

Enlists Daryl Hall

John Oates

John Oates, alongside Daryl Hall, is part of what Rolling Stone reported was the top-selling musical duo of all time in 2013 when it was announced they were entering the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Since 1976, the guys have charted 34 songs in Billboard's Hot 100, including six number ones.

But despite his own notoriety Oates, who grew up outside of Philadelphia in North Wales, Pennsylvania, said he has mixed feelings about using fame to influence things.

"I’m a firm believer that people should not follow a musician or a celebrity and do what they’re doing just because they’re doing it," Oates said. "But I believe it’s a great opportunity for a well-known person who has a lot of social reach to be able to at least create awareness and let people decide for themselves."

Right now, Oates wants to make his fans aware of the fight against hunger in this country, and he's using the power of music to convey his message. Oates and his wife Aimee have partnered with Feeding America, NugsTV and Drive Entertainment Group for Oates Song Fest 7908.

Happening online Saturday, March 20, the virtual music festival will be available to stream for free with viewers encouraged to donated to Feeding America for its mission of supporting foodbanks across the country.

Cannes Film Festival

Spike Lee

Spike Lee, who was set to lead last year’s jury for the Cannes Film Festival that was ultimately canceled by the pandemic, will preside over this year’s jury instead.

The French Riviera festival on Tuesday announced that Lee will be president of the jury for the 74th Cannes. Usually held in May, this year’s Cannes Film Festival has been delayed by the health crisis. It’s set to take place July 6-17.

Lee is the first Black person to head the Cannes jury, which selects one of cinema’s top prizes, the Palme d’Or.

Organizers said preparations “are in full swing” for this year’s Cannes, more details of which will be announced in coming weeks. Selections will be announced in early June.

Weighs In

Ralph Fiennes

Ralph Fiennes voiced support for J.K. Rowling in a recent interview with The Telegraph (via The Hollywood Reporter). The actor, who starred as the villainous Lord Voldemort in the “Harry Potter” film franchise, said he’s disturbed by the treatment of Rowling in the aftermath of her controversial opinions on gender identity and biological sex. Rowling’s views have been condemned as transphobic, and Fiennes’ “Harry Potter” co-stars Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and more all showed support for the transgender community in the aftermath of Rowling’s comments.

“I can’t understand the vitriol directed at her,” Fiennes told The Telegraph about Rowling and the backlash she’s faced over the last year. “I can understand the heat of an argument, but I find this age of accusation and the need to condemn irrational. I find the level of hatred that people express about views that differ from theirs, and the violence of language towards others, disturbing.”

Backlash against Rowling ignited June 6, 2020 after she posted a series of comments to Twitter in which she argued that discussing gender identity negates biological sex. “If sex isn’t real, there’s no same-sex attraction,” the author wrote. “If sex isn’t real, the lived reality of women globally is erased. I know and love trans people, but erasing the concept of sex removes the ability of many to meaningfully discuss their lives.” Rowling later published an essay on the matter.

Radcliffe, who led Rowling’s “Harry Potter” film franchise in the title role, published a statement a few days later via The Trevor Project’s website in which he stood up in support for the transgender community.

Highest Number Of Complaints

Piers Morgan

Piers Morgan’s comments about Meghan Markle on Good Morning Britain last week have officially become the most complained about moment in British television history, according to the UK media regulator.

Ofcom revealed on Wednesday that 57,121 complaints have been made about the show, in which Morgan questioned if Markle was being genuine in saying her time with the royal family had left her feeling suicidal. She made the comments in a tell-all CBS interview with Oprah Winfrey last week.

The complaints are up from 41,000 last week, and puts Good Morning Britain above an episode of Celebrity Big Brother in Ofcom’s hall of shame. Some 44,500 complained about a Big Brother episode in 2007, when Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty was targeted by Jade Goody and Danielle Lloyd.

Ofcom announced last week that it is investigating Good Morning Britain to establish whether Morgan broke the UK broadcasting code. Morgan himself resigned last Tuesday after he refused to apologize for his remarks. He was typically non-plussed about the Ofcom complaints, tweeting:

Ofcom was founded in 2002, so it’s possible that there were shows pre-dating the regulator that notched up more than 57,121 complaints, though the internet has made it easier for people to register their concerns.

House Passes Bill

ERA

The House passed a resolution Wednesday to remove the deadline to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment — just weeks after a federal judge ruled that time had already run out.

Rep. Jackie Speier, D-Calif., said the passage of her joint resolution by a vote of 222-204 made it clear that "there can be no expiration date on equality."

A companion joint resolution in the Senate, which was introduced by Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, and Ben Cardin, D-Md., faces a steeper climb; at least 10 Republicans will have to join all 50 Democrats for it to pass. Only four Republicans voted for the measure in the House, including Tom Reed of New York, Speier's co-sponsor.

The amendment says: "Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex."

Sells For $722,000

Yongle Porcelain

An exceptionally rare 15th century porcelain bowl made in China that somehow turned up at a Connecticut yard sale and sold for just $35 was auctioned off Wednesday for nearly $722,000.

The small white bowl adorned with cobalt blue paintings of flowers and other designs — one of only seven such bowls known to exist in the world — was among a variety of Chinese works of art sold by Sotheby’s as part of its Asia Week events. The names of the seller and buyer were not disclosed.

Sotheby’s had estimated the value of the artifact at $300,000 to $500,000. Wednesday’s auction included 15 bids, starting at $200,000 from someone online and ending at $580,000 from another person bidding by phone. The official purchase price, which included various fees, was $721,800.

An antiques enthusiast came across the Ming Dynasty-era piece and thought it could be something special when browsing a yard sale in the New Haven area last year, according to Sotheby’s. The buyer later emailed information and photos to Sotheby’s asking for an evaluation.

The bowl dates back to the early 1400s during the reign of the Yongle Emperor, the third ruler of the Ming Dynasty, and was made for the Yongle court. The Yongle court was known to have ushered in a new style to the porcelain kilns in the city of Jingdezhen, and the bowl is a quintessential Yongle product, according to Sotheby’s.

Lose Their Songs

Endangered Birds

Male songbirds usually learn their tunes from adult mentors. But when aspiring crooners lack proper role models, they hit all the wrong notes — and have less success attracting mates.

For five years, ecologist Ross Crates has tracked the singing ability and breeding success of critically endangered regent honeyeaters. These distinctive black and yellow birds were once common across Australia, but habitat loss since the 1950s has shrunk their population to only about 300 or 400 wild birds today.

While male birds once formed large winter flocks, now they are sparsely distributed across the landscape, so many fly solo. That means fewer honeyeater mentors are nearby during young birds’ impressionable first year.

The researchers found that a significant portion of male birds appear to be learning tunes exclusively from other species they encounter. About 12% of male regent honeyeaters wind up producing mangled versions of songs typically sung by noisy friarbirds and black-faced cuckooshrikes, among other species.

Unconventional male singers were less successful in wooing mates, the scientists found in research published Tuesday in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B. “We think the females are avoiding breeding and nesting with males that sing unusual songs,” Crates said.

The Secrets of Hibernation

Lemurs

Spring is coming to North America and scientists are quietly excited. Little dwarf lemurs are waking up after months in hibernation – the first time these furry fat-tailed animals have gone into a long hibernation in captivity.

New research, which recreated seasonal conditions to coax captive dwarf lemurs into hibernation just like their wild kin do in western Madagascar, suggests these animals can return to their wild hibernating ways after decades of breeding in captive care.

The study findings should not only help improve care for dwarf lemurs in captivity but also gives scientists new ways of studying the biological trickery hibernating animals use to weather environmental extremes.

Fat-tailed dwarf lemurs are master hibernators, spending up to seven months hibernating each year depending on conditions. It's an extreme survival tactic used by many mammals for going on 250 million years.

Dwarf lemurs, which use fat stores in their tails to last out the Madagascan winter, are actually our closest hibernating primate relative. To save energy in hibernation, their heart rate almost flatlines, their body temperature plummets, and their breathing slows to the point where scientists have observed one hibernating lemur go 21 minutes between breaths.
