Paul Krugman: Return of the Undeserving Poor (NY Times Blog)
When I was growing up, income inequality wasn't yet a big issue, because the middle class was strong and the plutocracy fairly marginal. But there was a great deal of alarm over the troubles of the African-American community, where social disorder was on the rise even as explicit legal discrimination (although not de facto discrimination) was coming to an end. What was going on?
Mark Morford: "The Trump Army: Haters invited, incited and convinced to hate" (SF Gate)
[Trump is] the darkest, least humane, most ignoble corner of the human psyche, made fleshy and orange. Who invited him here, exactly? Republicans. The Bush era. Capitalism. Racism. Fear. America. Everyone, and no one. One thing's for certain: He means the world ill.
Mark Morford: Why does Starbucks hate you? (SF Gate)
The Cherry Blossom Frappucino, naturally, is flavored with strawberry, crammed with industrial whipped cream, injected with "matcha drizzle" (?), slathered in white chocolate sauce, sprinkled with hate and shot through with 19 kinds of diabetes medication, all served in a clear plastic cup that will choke two dozen sea turtles by Easter and won't disintegrate until the sun explodes. Oh well.
The female superhero is finally here (BBC)
We have come a long way from the skin-baring excess of Halle Berry's Catwoman. Jessica Jones and Wonder Woman represent a bold new superheroine, writes Jennifer Keishin Armstrong.
Among this actor's memorable characterizations are Johnny LaRue, Doctor Tongue, smut merchant Harry, "the Guy With the Snake on His Face", and Melonville's corrupt Mayor Tommy Shanks. What is his name?
John Franklin Candy (October 31, 1950 - March 4, 1994) was a Canadian actor and comedian, mainly in American films such as Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987) and Uncle Buck (1989).
Candy rose to fame as a member of the Toronto branch of the Second City and its related Second City Television series, and through his appearances in such comedy films as Stripes, Splash, Cool Runnings, Summer Rental, The Great Outdoors, Spaceballs and Uncle Buck, as well as more dramatic roles in Only the Lonely and JFK.
Among Candy's memorable characterizations for SCTV were unscrupulous street-beat TV personality Johnny LaRue, 3-D horror auteur Doctor Tongue, sycophantic and easily amused talk-show sidekick William B. Williams, and Melonville's corrupt Mayor Tommy Shanks. Other characters included the cheerful Leutonian clarinetist Yosh Shmenge, who was half of the Happy Wanderers and the subject of the mockumentary The Last Polka, folksy fishin' musician Gil Fisher, handsome if accent-challenged TV actor Steve Roman, Pippy Long Socks, hapless children's entertainer Mr. Messenger, corrupt soap opera doctor William Wainwright, smut merchant Harry, "the Guy With the Snake on His Face", and Giorgy, everyone's favourite Cossack.

John Candy, another big ole funny fat guy that bit the dust too soon. He sure had an impressive body of work.
Laughing Lois Of Oregon answered:
Sad to say, I had to look this one up, and I used to watch SCTV every week! Must be getting senile...don't remember John Candy as all THAT funny, either. But then, my maiden name was Bartholomew... And by the way, it is MUCH funnier when you say "Barfalloveryou" instead. So there.
Randall replied:
You know what - Eugene Levy - jumped to mind, but when I went to find a photo, I stumbled across the fact that Johnny LaRue was actually John Candy

It was a problem that had baffled mathematicians for centuries - until British professor Andrew Wiles set his mind to it.
"There are no whole number solutions to the equation xn + yn = zn when n is greater than 2."
Otherwise known as "Fermat's Last Theorem," this equation was first posed by French mathematician Pierre de Fermat in 1637, and had stumped the world's brightest minds for over 300 years.
In the 1990s, Oxford professor Andrew Wiles finally solved the problem, and this week was awarded the hugely prestigious 2016 Abel Prize - including a $700,000 windfall.
The prize, often described as the Nobel of mathematics, was awarded by the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, with an official ceremony featuring Crown Prince Haakon of Norway to take place in May.

Anonymous, the group of anti-cyber-surveillance vigilantes donning Guy Fawkes masks, is declaring "total war" on presidential hopeful Donald Trump (R-Wichser).
The brief, yet poignant, YouTube vlog post calls out Trump for his "deeply disturbing" actions.
"Dear Donald Trump," the Anonymous spokesperson continued, addressing Trump directly, "We have been watching you for a long time, and what we see is deeply disturbing."
At this point in the video, clips of Trump's "deeply disturbing" behavior flashed the screen, accompanied by sound bites of Republican forerunner mocking a reporter with a disability, calling Mexicans "rapists" and women he doesn't like "fat pigs, dogs, slobs and disgusting animals," among other notoriously offensive moments.
The video elaborated, "Your inconsistent and hateful campaign has not only shocked the United States of America, you have shocked the entire planet with your appalling actions and ideas."
Senate Republican efforts to stop mandatory labeling of genetically modified foods have stalled.
The Senate, on a 48-49 vote Wednesday, fell short of the necessary numbers to move ahead on legislation that would have barred states from requiring the labeling. Vermont is set to require such labels this summer, and other states are considering similar laws.
The procedural vote is a setback for the food industry, which has lobbied to block Vermont's law.
The industry argues that genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, are safe and the labels could be costly for agriculture, food companies and consumers. Congressional Republicans have opposed a patchwork of state laws and worked to find a solution on the issue before Vermont's law kicks in.
Genetically modified seeds are engineered in laboratories to have certain traits, such as resistance to herbicides. The majority of the country's corn and soybean crop is now genetically modified, with much of that going to animal feed. Corn and soybeans also are made into popular processed food ingredients such as high-fructose corn syrup, corn starch and soybean oil. The food industry says about 75 percent to 80 percent of foods contain genetically modified ingredients.

Denmark has reclaimed the title of world's happiest country, bumping Switzerland to second place in this year's edition of the UN's World Happiness Report.
Released to coincide with World Happiness Day on March 20, the UN released the fourth edition of the index which ranks 156 countries by their "happiness levels."
Dominating the top 10 list are Nordic and Scandinavian countries, with Denmark, Iceland, Norway, Finland and Sweden taking up half the spots.
To compile the ranking, editors considered the GDP per capita; the healthy years of life expectancy; social support; trust (measured by a perceived absence of corruption in government and business); freedom to make life decisions; generosity (measured by donations); and new this year, happiness inequality.
Denmark has repeatedly taken the top spot in happiness and life satisfaction rankings be it the UN or the OECD, thanks in part to generous parental leave policies, gender equality, work-life balance, and safety.
The U.S. Republican presidential debate scheduled for next week in Utah has been canceled, host Fox News said on Wednesday, after party front-runner Donald Trump (R-Pinche Pendejo) told the network he would not participate.
Trump, who has clashed with Fox News throughout his campaign, told Fox in an interview on Wednesday he would not appear at the event, scheduled for Monday, because he thought the Republicans had "had enough debates."
Rival John Kasich (R-Gynotician) said following Trump's decision that he would also skip the debate unless the front-runner changed his mind and decided to come.
Ted Cruz (R-Canada), the third remaining Republican candidate vying for the party's nomination for the November presidential election, criticized Trump on Twitter, calling him #DuckingDonald and urging his own supporters to tell Trump to attend.
Fox News, part of the Twenty-First Century Fox Inc broadcast media and entertainment company controlled by Rupert Murdoch, had announced the debate, to be held in Salt Lake City, earlier this week, its latest in the primary season.

Argentina's navy announced Tuesday that it used gunfire to sink a boat Chinese-flagged boat that was fishing illegally in national waters.
The navy statement said the boat was intercepted Monday off the coast of Puerto Madryn, about 907 miles (1,460 kilometers) south of Buenos Aires.
The statement said the boat did not heed warning calls and instead tried to ram an Argentine naval vessel. Sailors then shot holes in different parts of the fishing boat, causing it to sink, the navy said.
Four people on board were rescued and arrested. They remained in custody and were to go before a federal judge in southern Chubut province, the statement said.
In Beijing, Lu Kang, a spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, posted a statement on the ministry's website saying the boat had been fishing in Argentine waters and was chased for several hours before Argentine naval fire holed the vessel. It said four Chinese were picked up by the Argentines and 28 more were rescued by a nearby Chinese vessel.

On March 16, 2016, Dr. Ben Carson (R-Malpractice) spoke to Yahoo News and Finance Anchor Bianna Golodryga on "Yahoo News Live" about his endorsement of GOP frontrunner Donald Trump (R-Pinche Pendejo) and Trump's big wins in the March 15 primaries.
Golodryga pressed Carson on his support for Donald Trump even though Trump had compared him to a child molester. Carson said he accepted Trump's explanation for the remark, and that it was, in fact, effective. "He said that it was political. He was concerned about the fact that he couldn't shake me. I understand politics and, in particular, the politics of personal destruction, and you have to admit, to some degree, that it did work." He continued, "A lot of people believed him."
Carson said he is supporting Trump for the good of the country despite the previous personal attacks. He told Golodryga: "It's not really about me. If it were about me, yes, I would be outraged. I would say in no way can I support this, but it's not about me. It's about America." Carson continued, "Unfortunately we live in a society where that kind of thing works, and people use things that work."

NASA said it will test the effects of a large fire in space by setting off a blaze inside an orbiting unmanned space craft.
NASA has set off tiny controlled fires in space in the past, but never tested how large flames react inside a space capsule in space.
The goal is to measure the size of the flames, how quickly they spread, the heat output, and how much gas is emitted.
The experiment will be conducted in an Orbital ATK Cygnus capsule after the craft ferries supplies to the International Space Station.
The results of this experiment, dubbed Saffire-1, will determine how much fire resistance is needed in the ultra-light material used in the spacecraft and the astronaut's gear.

A US tourist has been arrested after spending a night in a cave below Jerusalem's Old City in what may have been a search for mythical buried treasure, police and media reports said Tuesday.
The tourist was found on Friday after spending the night in Zedekiah's Cave, also known as Solomon's Quarries, a 20,000-square-metre area beneath the Muslim quarter of the Old City.
Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported that the 19-year-old tourist, who was not identified, hid inside the site at closing time on Thursday before digging in different areas of the cave.
Zedekiah's Cave is the remnant of what was once the largest quarry in Jerusalem, dating back at least to the Second Jewish Temple period, from the sixth century BC to the first century AD.
It has also served as a ceremonial site for Freemasons.
Horton, who also starred as the title character in another TV Western, A Man Called Shenandoah, died March 9 in Los Angeles. His niece, Joan Evans, told The New York Times that her uncle had been injured in a fall in November.
The handsome actor starred on Wagon Train from the start of the series in September 1957 through the end of its fifth season in June 1962, when he quit the show. The very popular Wagon Train - about a trek from Missouri to California - aired on NBC while he was there, then shifted to ABC for its final three seasons.
Soon after he departed, Horton starred on Broadway as the charismatic con man Bill Starbuck in 110 in the Shade, a musical adaptation of the 1956 film The Rainmaker (his part was made famous by Burt Lancaster in the movie). The production ran for more than 300 performances through summer 1964.
On ABC's A Man Called Shenandoah, which lasted just a season (1965-66), Horton played a cowboy in the 1870s who develops amnesia after he's shot and left for dead. He also performed the theme song.
A Los Angeles native who graduated from the University of California, Horton made his Broadway debut in the 1943 comedy Slightly Married. His first movie role came in Lewis Milestone's A Walk in the Sun (1945), and he later appeared in such films as Bright Road (1953), Men of the Fighting Lady (1954) and the Japanese sci-fi cult favorite The Green Slime (1968).
Frank Sinatra Jr., who carried on his famous father's legacy with his own music career, has died. He was 72.
The Sinatra family said in a statement to The Associated Press that Sinatra died unexpectedly Wednesday of cardiac arrest while on tour in Daytona Beach, Florida.
The statement said the family mourns the untimely passing of their son, brother, father and uncle. No other details were provided.
Kidnapped and held for ransom when he was 19, Sinatra Jr. had already followed his dad into the music business by then. He eventually worked for his father as his musical director and conductor. He performed the National Anthem at a New York Yankees game last year.
