I love my community college with a passion I didn't know I was still capable of after enduring the slings and arrows of outrageous public school dealings for so long. For 26 years, I taught middle school, and I loved it. At least, I thought I was loving it, but retrospectively, I realize something that I did not know while I was still there. I was only used to the rest of it.

Shame on YOU
You missed listing the premier of "The Riches" on FX Tuesday night. It
stars Eddie Izzard (sans transvestite regalia). I'd rate it up there with
"Rescue Me". Drama, comedy, suspense... it's all there and likely to be a
hit. Repeats throughout the week.
WM
Thanks, WM!
But - shame on ME?
Cripes, it's been close to 950 days since I missed posting a fresh page.
I don't want to go off on a fine eyetalian whine, but, I try to do a good job, and it's not like I got into it for the money.
Initially, I'd hoped folks would send their $ to Bart, but last year he said I should add a
PayPal account and see what happened.
The PayPal account was $35 - it has yet to pay for itself.
I'm using a quirky 4 year-old bottom-of-the-line no-name computer and a crappy dial-up - just uploading the page takes over an hour.
I seldom get to bed before 3am, and reveille blows around 7am to get the kid off to school.
I haven't had a decent night's sleep since I pulled my ribs last week, and to be honest, I noticed that
I'd ommitted 'The Riches', but it was too damn late & I was too damn tired to spend another half hour fixing it.
Sorry.
I'll try harder.

Activists Honored
A blind Chinese activist, an imprisoned Egyptian weblog writer, an assassinated Arab journalist, a campaigner for equal rights for women with HIV-AIDS and a filmmaker who documented the Israeli pull-out from the Gaza Strip were honoured here Wednesday for their bravery at the 2007 Index on Censorship Freedom of Expression awards.
The Freedom of Expression awards recognise those who have made outstanding contributions in the field through films, books, the law, journalism or whistle-blowing.
Index on Censorship magazine was founded in 1972, dedicated to freedom of expression issues. It monitors free speech abuses, lobbies for changes in the law and supports the independent press.

Dead Rapper Leads Pop Chart
Notorious B.I.G.
The Notorious B.I.G. grabbed the No. 1 slot on the U.S. pop album charts for the second time since he was murdered in 1997, while Montreal-based rock troupe Arcade Fire debuted at No. 2 with its second album, according to sales data issued Wednesday.
The late rapper's "Greatest Hits" sold 99,000 copies in the week ended March 11, tracking firm Nielsen SoundScan reported. The package is Notorious B.I.G.'s third chart-topper, his second posthumously, and features two previously unreleased tracks, "Running Your Mouth" and "Want That Old Thing Back." The rapper, born Christopher Wallace, was murdered in a drive-by shooting in Los Angeles 10 years ago almost to the date, on March 9, 1997.

Porn Interrupts Tom Brokaw
KPPX-TV
Viewers of a news show broadcast on a Phoenix-area cable television station received a lot more than news - hard-core pornography started streaming into their living rooms, replacing a health show featuring former NBC News anchor Tom Brokaw.
The incident on KPPX-TV Monday night prompted a flood of calls to local news media outlets and cable provider Cox Communications, including one from Chandler resident Brenda Schodt, who said she was shocked to look up and see graphic sex acts on her television screen.
Cox spokeswoman Andrea Katsenes said that the unexpected clips were a "source issue" with the broadcaster.
ION Television, which operates KPPX, called the problem "an act of human sabotage" at its station.

Ends Concert During First Song
The Who
Fans of The Who left a Tampa amphitheater disappointed after lead singer Roger Daltrey walked off the stage during the band's first song.
Several minutes after Daltrey's departure, guitarist Pete Townshend announced that Tuesday night's show had been canceled. He told the crowd that Daltrey had bronchitis.
The 9,000 people at the show cheered when Townshend told them the concert would be rescheduled for March 25.

More Compassionate Conservatism In Action
Angel Raich
A California woman whose doctor says marijuana is the only medicine keeping her alive can face federal prosecution on drug charges, a U.S. appeals court ruled Wednesday.
The case was brought by Angel Raich, an Oakland mother of two who suffers from scoliosis, a brain tumor, chronic nausea and other ailments. On her doctor's advice, she eats or smokes marijuana every couple of hours to ease her pain and bolster a nonexistent appetite as conventional drugs did not work.
Raich, 41, sobbed when she was told of the decision and said she would continue using the drug.
"I'm sure not going to let them kill me," she said. "Oh my God."

New Presidential Coin
Faceless Dollar
Mary and Ray Smith can't make heads or tails of a new presidential dollar coin they found last week. It doesn't have either. A week after the revelation that some of the coins slipped out of the U.S. mint in Philadelphia without "In God We Trust" stamped on the edge, the Smiths said Tuesday they found one with nothing stamped on either flat side.
It does have "In God We Trust" on the edge. What's missing is the image of George Washington on the front and the Statue of Liberty on the back. Instead, the Smith's coin is just smooth, shiny, golden metal.
The Smiths' coin bears a "D," meaning it was produced by the Denver Mint. The "Godless" coins were all believed to have come from the Philadelphia Mint.

Diary Donated To College
Chester Gillette
The diary of Chester Gillette, whose murder of his lover in 1906 became the basis for Theodore Dreiser's classic "An American Tragedy," has been donated to Hamilton College after being passed down for generations through his family.
"He truly is a different person in the diary" than he is in the trial transcripts, said Marlynn McWade-Murray, Gillette's grandniece, who donated the book to the upstate New York college. "It's possible if they had seen that person they may have had a different outcome."
Gillette was executed at Auburn State Prison on March 30, 1908, for the slaying of Grace Brown at Big Moose Lake on July 11, 1906. His monthlong trial made headlines across the country. He maintained his innocence until the end, claiming that Brown drowned accidentally, and that he panicked and fled.
The story might have faded from public interest if not for Dreiser's 1925 novel and later a movie version, "A Place in the Sun," which starred Montgomery Clift, Elizabeth Taylor and Shelley Winters, and won six Academy Awards. The story also has been retold on TV, plays, songs, true crime books and in 2005 on stage by the Metropolitan Opera.
