C. Coville: "5 Things I Didn't Know About Health Care (Until I Got Sick)" (Cracked)
In 2011, I entered a period of ill health so terrible that I bankrupted a couple of insurance companies and caused an entire hospital to collapse in despair, killing hundreds. I'm mostly better now, and the lawsuits are almost all sorted out, but along the way I learned a few things. Like ...

What's your default? What's your favorite go-to expression? Don't be coy; you know you have one. Sweet smirk? Goofy grin? Smoochy duck-face? Maybe you're more of a bored hipster sneer, a coy Mona Lisa or a sultry come-hither, like you just had sex with a giant chocolate Jesus and someone took God's name in sweet, sticky vain. I like that one, too.
David Bruce: Wise Up! Work (Athens News)
While trying to establish herself as a stand-up comedian, Joan Rivers worked as talent agent Irvin Arthur's secretary. Of course, very important people called who wanted to talk to Mr. Arthur, but if Joan thought that they could help her establish herself as a stand-up comedian, she would introduce herself and do a comic monologue before allowing them to talk to Mr. Arthur.
Mancunian (or Manc) is a dialect, and the name given to the people of Manchester, England, and its environs.

Lois With A Brick In Oregon was first, and correct, with:
The Mancunian dialect? Is that the one spoken by D.P. Gumby
of the UK? Everything sounds so elegant with a British

P.S. @ Sally: Hope Bernie comes through for you!
P.S.S. @ Bttb Bob: I think they filmed X File 4th season

they did use the Brockway Store that's 10 miles down the

Today, I'm afraid, Lois' comments on the new Cosmos series have set me off. I admired Carl Sagan a great deal, and most of his popular writing was excellent, but I didn't like Cosmos all that much because it struck me as too elementary. On reflection, I suspect that was actually Sagan's idea: to use the opportunity to communicate the appeal of science as broadly as possible. Not such a bad idea.
Don't get me wrong, I'm sure Sagan knew way more about the cosmos than I ever will (as does Neil deGrasse Tyson), but I saw something the other day suggesting that Cosmos was the best science television ever, and I dissent; how about
The Ascent of Man? Its 13 parts are all online here or there.

"X-Files" Challenge - The 'location' of the episode Schizogeny - (Season 5, Epi. 9), Coats Grove, MI, became very familiar to me as my 'Lady Friend' at-that-time grew up on a large farm about 7 miles directly down the road eastward from that little hamlet. We visited 'the farm' frequently as she was a true 'farmer's daughter' and drove through Coats Grove to get there. It's marked on the map, but isn't anything more than a couple dozen houses on paved county road. There is a county sign declaring its presence, but it isn't an actual 'entity'. 100 years ago there was large general store from the looks of one building and there was an old schoolhouse. A small church, too. The area is farmland broken up by large tracts of thick hardwood forest and small lakes. Prime deer hunting, btw. Some wag who lives on the eastern outskirts of Coats Grove beyond the county sign erected a hand made sign "East Coats Grove"... har!

It was 'fraternization', o' course, as she was a 2nd LT and I, a non-com, but we kept it way off-post and outta harm's way... Alas, she was transferred to Landstuhl, BRD and the big army hospital there. That happened to me twice more, dagnabbit!
(63) "Frank" was "Shameless"... Bill was magnificent.

I understand that Mancunian is still spoken in remote regions of Upper Mancunia. Mancunian was abolished as the National Language in the Whole of Mancunia (as it is called commonly called) and American English was adopted so as to be ready when McDonalds, Wendy's and Wal-Mart arrived in country. It was felt that it would be easier for native Mancunians to obtain employment if they spoke the language of their corporate overlords.
Either that or it's Manchester.

The inventor of the world wide web, Tim Berners-Lee, called on Wednesday for bill of rights to protect freedom of speech on the Internet and users' rights after leaks about government surveillance of online activity.
Exactly 25 years since the London-born computer scientist invented the web, Berners-Lee said there was a need for a charter like England's historic Magna Carta to help guarantee fundamental principles online.
Web privacy and freedom have come under scrutiny since former U.S. National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden last year leaked a raft of secret documents revealing a vast U.S. government system for monitoring phone and Internet data.
"Our rights are being infringed more and more on every side, and the danger is that we get used to it. So I want to use the 25th anniversary for us all to do that, to take the web back into our own hands and define the web we want for the next 25 years," he told the Guardian newspaper.

Bill Maher took advantage of pal Jay Leno's Television Academy Hall of Fame induction to offer a spirited attack on what Maher called undeserved "bad publicity" for the former "Tonight Show" host.
After Maher's introduction, Leno's remarks proved mild. Repeating assertions he made when he ended his 22-year tenure as host in February, Leno, 63, said it was the right time to turn "Tonight" over to the younger Jimmy Fallon, who is 39.
The other inductees included media baron Rupert Murdoch (R-Evil Incarnate); Julia Louis-Dreyfus; prolific writer-producer David E. Kelley ("Boston Legal," ''The Practice," ''Ally McBeal"); and former ABC executive Brandon Stoddard, who shepherded breakthrough shows including "Roots."
Sound pioneer Ray Dolby was inducted posthumously, with his wife, Dagmar, and son David accepting the honor.

A former Baltimore factory worker has won one of the richest prizes for poetry awarded in the United States.
Claremont Graduate University in Southern California announced Wednesday that 62-year-old Afaa Michael Weaver of Somerville, Mass., has won the $100,000 Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award for his book of verse "The Government of Nature." The prize goes annually to a mid-career poet.
The competition's chief judge, Chase Twichell, called Weaver's life story "truly remarkable." Born in Baltimore in 1951, Weaver served in the Army for two years and worked in a factory for 15, writing poems all the while, before leaving for a scholarship at Brown University and releasing his first book of verse in 1985.
Another prize of $10,000, the Kate Tufts Discovery Award, went to Pittsburgh poet Yona Harvey. That prize is given annually for a first book by a poet of promise.
Belgian jazz musician Toots Thielemans has decided to retire together with his trademark harmonica at age 91.
Thielemans made the announcement Wednesday when he cancelled a concert in Antwerp for a second time in three months for health reasons.
His manager, Veerle Van de Poel, said Thielemans "considers his energy too limited for a full concert. He doesn't want to disappoint his fans, hence his decision to stop playing."
The haunting sounds produced by his harmonica can be heard on movie classics like Hollywood's "Midnight Cowboy" and France's "Jean de Florette."
Talk about a big bang - CBS is renewing its mega-hit comedy "The Big Bang Theory" for a whopping three more seasons.
The network announced that TV's No. 1 comedy among adults 18-49 will remain on the air into 2017. This is the second time that the series, created by Chuck Lorre, has gotten a three-year renewal.
Having renewed the show, Warner Bros. Television, which produces "Big Bang Theory," will focus on locking down the actors into new contracts. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the three main stars - Jim Parsons, Johnny Galecki, and Kaley Cuoco - are teaming up to negotiate big salary increases, from their current $325,000 per episode to $1 million.
Supporting cast members Simon Helberg and Kunal Nayyar are also negotiating together for pay raises, while Mayim Bialik and Melissa Rauch recently signed new deals.
George R.R. Martin has reason to be alarmed: "Game of Thrones" debuts its fourth season on HBO next month, while the author has only released five out of his seven books.
"I can give them the broad strokes of what I intend to write, but the details aren't there yet," Martin told Vanity Fair for its April issue, featuring several cast members on the cover. "I'm hopeful that I can not let them catch up with me."
Co-creator David Benioff shares the author's concerns.
"Last year we went out to Santa Fe for a week to sit down with him and just talk through where things are going, because we don't know if we are going to catch up and where exactly that would be," Benioff explains. "If you know the ending, then you can lay the groundwork for it. And so we want to know how everything ends. We want to be able to set things up. So we just sat down with him and literally went through every character."
Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc plans to shed much of its 40-year-old investment in Graham Holdings Co, the former publisher of the Washington Post, and swap most of its shares for a Miami television station and other assets.
According to a Wednesday regulatory filing, Berkshire plans to turn over more than 1.61 million Graham shares worth in excess of $1.1 billion. It will receive ABC affiliate WPLG-TV in Miami, at least $400 million of Berkshire stock now owned by Graham, and cash.
The swap is designed to be tax-free, saving both companies millions of dollars. It values the TV station at $364 million, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filing shows.
The swap would leave Omaha, Nebraska-based Berkshire with roughly 100,000 of the 1.73 million Graham shares it owns. Those shares were worth more than $1.2 billion as of Tuesday. Berkshire paid $11 million for its stake in 1973.

Gladys and Robert Zimmerman Sr., parents of George Zimmerman, have filed a lawsuit against comedian and former presidential candidate Roseanne Barr, claiming that their lives were harmed after Barr allegedly posted their home address on Twitter in 2012.
Zimmerman's parents allege that Barr attempted to incite a "lynch mob to descend" onto their home for "vigilante justice" when she posted their address online, the Orlando Sentinel reports.
In July 2013, George Zimmerman, a former neighborhood watch volunteer, was found not guilty on charges stemming from the death cold-blooded murder of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. The case sparked national interest about race and Florida's controversial "Stand Your Ground" law. Zimmerman claimed he acted in self defense.
The suit, which was filed on Monday, claims that the couple was forced to leave their home after their address became public, MyFoxOrlando reports. The Zimmermans are seeking damages "in excess of $15,000" and cite emotional distress and invasion of privacy.

Gossip website Gawker has asked a judge to dismiss a lawsuit by Quentin Tarantino seeking at least $2 million over the publication of a leaked screenplay for what was to be his latest movie.
In a motion for dismissal filed Monday, Gawker Media said it only provided a link to an online location where the screenplay could be viewed, and as such did not provide a "scoop" because the document was already available.
The "Pulp Fiction" director announced in January that he had scrapped plans to film "The Hateful Eight" as his next project because the screenplay had been leaked. He subsequently filed a lawsuit accusing Gawker of "predatory journalism" over the 146-page script.
But Gawker said in its motion filed in California this week that Tarantino was responsible for publicizing the leak.

A former coal mining town's effort to revive its fortunes by changing its name to Rocky Top has hit a snag.
A development group has promised to turn Lake City into a tourist mecca if it goes through with the name change. The plan is to cash in on the fame of the bluegrass standard "Rocky Top," recorded over the years by Dolly Parton, Glen Campbell and others.
But Gatlinburg-based House of Bryant, which owns the rights to the song and multiple Rocky Top trademarks, is suing. A complaint filed Monday in federal court in Knoxville claims the name change would injure the reputation, goodwill and business value of House of Bryant's Rocky Top trademarks.

It's a tree so rare that there are believed to be fewer than 10 of its kind in the world, and it could be chopped down to make way for commuter trains in Northern California.
Preservationists are hoping to stoke public awareness and save the albino chimero coast redwood growing in the small Sonoma County town of Cotati.
Standing 52-feet tall, the tree features a unique mixture of normal green leaves and white, albino sections. It's believed to be the largest of its kind on the planet.
But Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) officials say the decision to remove it is out of their hands.
Federal regulators have determined the tree must come down for safety reasons. The genetically mutated redwood is apparently too close to a proposed set of new tracks.

A Japanese budget airline has flown into rough air over its decision to outfit flight attendants in revealing mini-skirts, drawing criticism that it could invite sexual harassment.
Skymark Airlines came under fire from the cabin crew's labour union, which said the super-short skirt -- with a distinctively swinging sixties look -- barely covers wearers' thighs.
"We're concerned that the design of this uniform may cause problems," including sexual harassment, the Japan Federation of Cabin Attendants said in a statement late last month.
"The airline is saying the uniform is meant to attract more customers, but this shows the company is treating women like a commodity," it added.
The airline, which disputes the union claims, plans to introduce the uniform as a temporary promotion for the launch of domestic routes its Airbus A330 planes in the spring.

The oldest known masks in the world went on display in Jerusalem on Tuesday in the largest-ever exhibit of the ghoulish faces, believed to have been created in the Holy Land thousands of years before the time of the Bible.
The 11 stone masks, said to have been discovered in the Judean desert and hills near Jerusalem, date back 9,000 years and offer a rare glimpse at some of civilization's first communal rituals.
The masks are thought to have been fashioned to look like skulls, and each one has its own personality. Some have round cartoonlike holes for eyes, others flash a grin of tiny teeth. One elongated mask bears a resemblance to that of Hollywood villain Hannibal Lecter of "Silence of the Lambs."
The masks have long been an enigma. Most of the artifacts had made their way into the hands of private collectors over the past several decades, so it took 10 years of carbon-14 testing and comparison to similar masks discovered in documented Israeli excavations for experts to determine their authenticity and origin.
