• A popular low-brow comedy series in Great Britain was the Carry On series of films. Between 1958 and 1992, 31 movies were made in the series, beginning with Carry On Sergeant and ending with Carry On Columbus. Carry On creators and creative team Peter Rogers and Gerald Thomas were sometimes asked what project they were working on — they always replied, “Same film, different title.”
• When Carol Burnett was growing up, she worked part-time at a movie theater that broadcast the sound of the movie into the area she staffed. She never saw the movie Ivanhoe, but she did hear it more than a hundred times. Decades afterward, she could still repeat verbatim long passages from the movie.
• At one time, Whoopi Goldberg, Academy Award-winning actress of Ghost, worked at a mortuary, where she applied makeup to corpses and dressed their hair. According to Ms. Goldberg, this was “great work” because she was “tired of working on living people who all wanted to look like Farrah Fawcett.”
• According to Michael Moore, the director of Roger and Me, once a year factory workers in Flint, Michigan, dress up in white shirts (instead of their usual blue shirts) as a visual reminder that the bosses “are no better than anyone else.”
• As a comic filmmaker, Jacques Tati carefully observed people. On a street one day, he looked at three people arguing about how much a cabbage cost. When his companion asked what he was doing, he replied, “Working.”
Alcohol
• During a long-distance telephone call, choreographer Agnes de Mille told her soldier husband, Walter Prude, that she was pregnant: “We’re having a baby!” He managed to say, “Good God, are you sure!” before they were disconnected — telephone service during World War II was not as good as it is today. Twenty-five minutes later, they were reconnected, and Agnes asked, “Are you all right? Have you something to drink?” Walter replied, “A bottle of Scotch. I’m well along in it.”
• Before they were married, Fred and Joanne Rogers (TV’s Mister Rogers and his significant other) went to many dances and parties, and they once won a bottle of champagne for their costumes when they went as Raggedy Ann and Andy. Because they were teetotalers, they did not drink it, but instead went around pouring it at various tables for their friends.

• A few months after African-American contralto Marian Anderson had been prevented from singing at Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C., because of her race, Pierre Monteux and the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra were scheduled to perform there. Doris, Pierre’s wife, arrived, along with Fifi, their pet dog. Unfortunately, three stern-looking men stopped Doris, telling her that under no circumstances could she enter Constitution Hall with “that dog.” A friend of Doris, Hilda Davis, told the stern-looking men, “Without a doubt we cannot enter because the dog, as you call her, is BLACK.” As Ms. Davis and the stern-looking men argued, Doris and Fifi made their way into Constitution Hall, where they enjoyed the concert.
• Marion Dane Bauer, author of the 1987 Newbery Honor Book titled On My Honor, has trained herself to be observant of behavior, including animal behavior. For example, she watched Popcorn, her pet dog, looking at snow. Popcorn first looked outside the kitchen window and watched snow falling. Then Popcorn looked down the hallway and through the dining-room glass doors and watched snow falling. Then Popcorn looked up at the ceiling. Clearly, Popcorn was wondering why white stuff was falling in front of the house and in back of the house but not in the house.
"Monday, Monday" is a 1966 song written by John Phillips and recorded by the Mamas & the Papas, using background instruments played by members of The Wrecking Crew for their 1966 album If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears. It was the group's only #1 hit on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, and the first time this had been achieved by a recording act containing both genders.
On March 2, 1967, the Mamas & the Papas won a Grammy Award for this song, in the category Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.
The song was performed at the Monterey Pop Festival (California) in 1967. The performance was filmed for the movie of the festival, but not included in the final print.

An Iowa jury on Wednesday acquitted a journalist who was pepper-sprayed and arrested by police while covering a protest, in a case that critics have derided as an attack on press freedoms and an abuse of prosecutorial discretion.
After deliberating for less than two hours, the jury found Des Moines Register reporter Andrea Sahouri and her ex-boyfriend Spenser Robnett not guilty on misdemeanor charges of failure to disperse and interference with official acts.
The Des Moines verdict is an embarrassing outcome for the office of Polk County Attorney John Sarcone, which pursued the charges despite widespread condemnation from advocates for a free press and human rights.
Those advocates, ranging from Sahouri’s bosses at the Register to Amnesty International, argued that Sahouri was wrongly arrested while doing her job covering racial injustice protests in Des Moines last May.
Sahouri, 25, immediately identified herself as a reporter on assignment but was subjected to what she called “extremely painful” pepper spray blasts and jailed. Robnett, 24, said he was sprayed and handcuffed after telling the officer that Sahouri was a Register journalist.
Buzzfeed announced Tuesday that it has laid off 45 reporters, editors and producers from the newly acquired HuffPost.
HuffPost Executive Editor Hillary Frey, the website’s executive editor, and Executive Editor Louise Roug also resigned over the layoffs, Buzzfeed said.
The dismissals come just three weeks after Buzzfeed acquired HuffPost, the media outlet founded in 2005 as The Huffington Post, from Verizon Media.
According to excerpts released by the company, Buzzfeed CEO Jonah Peretti told employees at a meeting that “we will begin to restructure HuffPost today to fast-track its path to profitability. Unfortunately that includes staff reductions, and a number of talented colleagues will be laid off over the next few days.”
Many of the laid off employees were lamenting losing their jobs on social media after stints of many years, and objected to the way they were told, saying the password for entering the remote meeting was a variation of “spring is here,” making them blindsided by what would come later.
Having successfully distracted themselves from the grim futility of life for a few precious moments by buying up every Dr. Seuss book in close reach—and thus sticking it to those bastards in the estate of Dr. Seuss, who decided not to continue publishing some of the beloved author’s books that trafficked in racist tropes—the Conservative Outrage Machine has now apparently settled on its next worthy target in its crusade against things that look like “cancel culture” if you don’t actually know what any of those words mean: A five-month-old update to Disney Plus. That’ll show ‘em!
Specifically, Variety reports on postings made this week by both The New York Post and Fox News, apparently unhappy with a decision from the streaming service—five months ago—not to include films requiring a content disclaimer for historical racism to be seen on accounts flagged for kids 7 years old or younger. (The films are all still on the service, mind you, and easily accessible; you can’t just access them if there’s a reasonable expectation that you, the consumer, are too young to read or understand their attached context disclaimers.) Said films include Peter Pan, Dumbo, Swiss Family Robinson, The Aristocats, Fantasia, The Jungle Book, and Lady And The Tramp.
Which, again: All of this was put in place back in October of 2020, before Green Eggs And Ham had even become a fundamental conservative text. But the all-seeing, all-glowering eye of the COM has no concern for your linear understanding of time, mortals. The disclaimers were part of a wave of streaming services coming to terms with the racially insensitive legacies of older materials, a modern iteration of the “What do we do with Gone With The Wind?” issue that’s dogged film critique for decades. (Or the “What to do with sitcom blackface?” issue that’s dogged network TV comedies since, uh, way back in the late-2000s.) None of it’s new, and most of it feels pretty reasonable, in so far as parents might, in fact, want to talk to their kids before showing them something like the racist stereotypes on display in Peter Pan.
On the other hand, the Post had presumably been sitting on that “Disney Minus” burn for like a year now, so good for them for finally working it out of their systems.
Don’t worry about making the trip to Hollywood for the Turner Classic Movies Festival this year — it’s coming straight to your living room. TCM said Wednesday that its 12th installment will run on both its cable channel and the HBO Max streaming service.
The festival begins May 6 with a 60th anniversary screening of “West Side Story” with new interviews from stars Rita Moreno, George Chakiris and Russ Tamblyn. Over the course of the four days, there will be tributes to people like Danny Glover and Ali MacGraw, new introductions to films from directors like Rob Reiner and Mira Nair, and spotlights on films that have been forgotten or overlooked, like Denzel Washington’s “Antwone Fisher” and “ They Won’t Believe Me ” from 1947. More than 80 films, programs and events will be shown throughout the festival.
“We’re thrilled to expand this year’s virtual festival across two platforms – linear and streaming. Our approach gives fans even more movies, stars and unique presentations to choose from,” said Pola Changnon, head of TCM, in a statement. “The breadth of this festival will offer interest for every kind of classic movie fan – whether they’re new to this world or card-carrying cinephiles!”
The state Democratic Party in Nevada has for years been among the strongest in country, buttressed by the state's powerful former senator, Harry Reid, and credited with helping Democrats chalk up wins in the swing state since 2016.
But that reputation took a hit this week after a slate of Sen. Bernie Sanders-aligned progressives backed by a local chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America won the party's top leadership posts. The results prompted resignations of the party's staff and consultants.
Nevada political operatives say the progressive takeover could diminish the power of the state party and jeopardize a push to make the state the first presidential nominating contest in 2024, ahead of Iowa and New Hampshire.
The new state party chair, Judith Whitmer, said she was surprised by the resignations and denied allegations that she had first threatened to fire staff or had suggested that Democratic elected officials should face primary challenges from the left.
It's unlikely that Whitmer's leadership will weaken the broader, vaunted political “Reid Machine” or the 2022 reelection prospects of Nevada’s U.S. Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, three Democrats in the U.S. House and the state’s Democratic governor. It seems likely Reid and other establishment politicians may move to work outside the party structure to raise money, recruit candidates and run voter outreach.
Songbirds are dying across California's Bay Area, and officials think crowds at bird feeders are to blame, according to recent news reports.
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) and wildlife rehabilitation centers have been "inundated" with calls since December 2020 from California residents reporting that they found sick or dead finches at their bird feeders, according to a statement posted Feb. 8.
An investigation into the deaths revealed that the birds were infected by the Salmonella bacteria and had developed salmonellosis. A tale as old as (pandemic) time: large gatherings were to blame.
Finches who came into contact with food, water or objects contaminated with feces from infected birds can contract the illness, according to the statement. As more birds gather in an area such as a bird feeder or a bird bath, the risk of infection increases.
The outbreak especially affected pine siskins (Spinus pinus), a species of finch that's small, brown with a sliver of yellow, streaked and very chatty (Its calls sound like a "like a zipper being zipped," according to ebird.org.) But lesser goldfinches (Spinus psaltria), American goldfinches (Spinus tristis) and others were also affected. Most of these salmonellosis cases were along the Central Coast, in the San Francisco Bay Area and in the Sierra Nevada.
At his farm in Afghanistan's capital Kabul, Rasool Rezaie gently picks oyster mushrooms, part of the around 30 kg he sells in markets daily.
Rezaie learned how to grow mushrooms during a stay in Russia as he tried to claim asylum there, and set up his farm two years ago.
"I was introduced to a mushroom farm in Russia by a friend, and I started working there, where I learned how to produce the mushroom spores and cultivate them," said Rezaie, who first moved to Russia in 2012 due to insecurity and unemployment in Afghanistan.
In 2016 more than one million people, a quarter of them Afghans, applied for asylum in Europe. Rezaie applied in Russia but his claim was rejected and he returned to Afghanistan, where he initially worked as a shopkeeper. But the memory of mushroom farming lingered.
He began by growing mushrooms in a single room in his own house, producing 4-5 kg for markets. Today, Rezaie said he earns about 4,500 Afghanis ($58) a day and is optimistic about his future.
An international team of scientists has announced the discovery of an extraordinary fossilized nest in China, preserving at least eight separate dinosaurs from 70 million years ago.
The clutch of ancient eggs belongs to a medium-sized adult oviraptor, and we know that because the parent is actually part of the fossil. The skeleton of this ostrich-like theropod is positioned in a crouch over two dozen eggs, at least seven of which were on the brink of hatching and still contain embryos inside.
The ancient scene is unprecedented, and provides the first hard evidence that dinosaurs were brooding parents, laying their eggs and incubating them for quite a long time.
"This kind of discovery - in essence, fossilized behavior - is the rarest of the rare in dinosaurs," says paleontologist Matt Lamanna from the Carnegie Museum of Natural History (CMNH).
The new specimen was recovered from the Nanxiong Formation of Ganzhou in South China - a region renowned for the world's largest collection of fossilized dinosaur eggs - but it's unlike anything scientists have found before.
