Garrison Keillor: The only column you need to read about COVID-19
Everyone is watching the situation closely. Republicans believe the epidemic will hit big cities hardest, keeping Democratic voters home in the fall. Democrats believe it will knock the Dow Jones down to where Republicans are disheartened. As for me, I think the Leader is inhaling so much hand sanitizer that he doesn't know a Corona from a White Owl or an El Rey del Mundo. What provision does the Constitution make for ditziness? It's not a High Crime or Misdemeanor but isn't this guy supposed to have helpers around?

Paul Waldman: If coronavirus hurts the economy, Trump will go nuts (Washington Post)
President Trump is unusually unpopular; his approval now stands at about 43 percent, and he's the only president in the history of polling never to have cracked 50 percent even for a day. But by no means does that prove he can't get reelected: He most certainly can. … There is one thing, however, that could make it nearly impossible for Trump to get reelected: a serious downturn in the economy.

Here's how you could catch COVID-19.

How COVID-19 Spreads (CDC)
Person-to-person spread
The virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person.
Between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet).
Through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes.
These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs.
Spread from contact with infected surfaces or objects
It may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads.

Throwback Thursday Trivia Question of the Day

Introduced in the 1960s, what product featured an armed knight riding a white horse, claiming it was "Stronger Than Dirt"?

Send your answer to Marty

Trivia Question from Yesterday

This single, #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart during the Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969, had an overriding theme of a world doomed by its passive acquiescence to and overdependence on its own overdone technologies. What is the title of this chart-topping song?

       "In The Year 2525"                                                      Source

"In the Year 2525" is a 1968 hit song by the American pop-rock duo of Zager and Evans. It reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for six weeks commencing July 12, 1969. It peaked at number one in the UK Singles Chart for three weeks in August and September that year. The song was written and composed by Rick Evans in 1964 and originally released on a small regional record label (Truth Records) in 1968. It was later picked up by RCA. Zager and Evans disbanded in 1971.

Zager and Evans were one-hit wonders, recording artists who had a number one hit and then never had another chart single. They did this in both the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles Chart and as of 2020, they are the only artists ever to have a chart-topping #1 hit on both sides of the Atlantic and never have another chart single in Billboard or in the UK for the rest of their career. Their follow-up single on RCA-Victor, "Mr. Turnkey", failed to enter the main music charts on either side of the Atlantic Ocean. Another single, "Listen to the People", managed to make the bottom slot of the Cashbox chart at number 100.

The overriding theme, of a world doomed by its passive acquiescence to and overdependence on its own overdone technologies, struck a resonant chord in millions of people around the world in the late 1960s. The song was #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart during the Apollo 11 moon landing.

The song was included in a Clear Channel memorandum, distributed by Clear Channel Communications to every radio station owned by the company, which contained 165 songs considered to be "lyrically questionable" following the September 11, 2001, attacks.        Source

"In the year 2525" by Zager and Evans. The record sold 20 million copies and set the all-time still current sales record for a one-hit wonder. Just now a little chill went up my spine just like it did 50 years ago. The last stanza was an all-time great as well:
     "Now it's been 10,000 years
Man has cried a billion tears
     For what he never knew
     Now Man's reign is through
     But through the eternal night
     The twinkling of starlight
     So very far away
     Maybe its only yesterday..."

Dave replied:
In the Year 2525. The song was recorded and first released in 1968, but didn't hit the charts until RCA noticed its regional popularity, signed the band, and released In the Year 2525 nationally in the summer of '69. The song was written by Rich Evans in 1964 but wasn't recorded until 1968. To date, Zager and Evans is the only group to have a #1 hit on both the US and UK charts but to never have another song even reach either chart. They ended the band in 1971 after 9 years.

Anecdotes

Parents

• Poet Wanda Coleman is African-American. In 1931, her father came to California after a young black man was lynched in Little Rock, Arkansas, where her father then lived. He simply offered some people driving through in a car that bore California license plates $15 to take him to California. Her mother worked as a housemaid and cleaned the home of Ronald Reagan when he and Jane Wyman were married. She asked him for a raise, he wouldn't give it to her, and so she quit. Wanda's parents then met in a church in California. Her father helped her to get an education. Whenever she went to her library, for some reason she was allowed to check out only books for girls, and she wanted to read books for boys. Therefore, she would go to the library with her father, she would pick out the books she wanted to read, and he would check them out for her.

• In the summer of 1920, the parents of Dick King-Smith, the author of Babe: The Gallant Pig, met. Dick's father was on crutches, the result of an injury in World War II, and he noticed a pretty, 18-year-old woman. Shortly afterward, she was confined to her room with a cold. He found out where she was staying, and he went there and stood in the sand of the beach. He waited until she appeared at a window, and then he used a crutch to write in the sand, "GET WELL SOON."

People with Handicaps

• Samuel Long's parents can hear, but he is deaf. His parents taught him sign language in addition to all the other things that parents teach their children, including colors. When he was young, his mother would ask him in sign language what color something was. If he answered correctly, she would sign to him, "Good boy, Sam." One day, when the Long family was painting the house, Sam disappeared for a short time. When he returned, he was completely naked, except for a coating of green paint. He signed to his mother, "What color, Mom?" She signed back, "Green." He replied in sign language, "Good girl, Mom." He wanted to be like the other kids, so he got headphones, and he pretended that he could listen to music in the headphones. One day, he and his mother were in a store; he was wearing his headphones, and his mother was speaking to him in sign language. The saleslady assumed that his mother must be the deaf one, so she began writing a note to her. After all, what would a deaf kid be doing with headphones?

• Philadelphia Phillie Dick Sisler stuttered, and he took a lot of good-natured ribbing from opposing players. Since he had been a Navy chief petty officer, players often asked him, "Whatta ya say, "Ch-ch-ch-ch-Chief?" Mr. Sisler always replied, "Fa-fa-fa-fa-fine, thanks." One day, a lost stranger asked for directions, saying, "Hey, bu-bu-bu-bu-buddy, where's fo-fo-fo-fo-forty-second street?" Mr. Sisler says, "I was af-af-af-af-afraid to answer."

The Sideshow - by Avedon Carol

Violated PBS Morals Clause

Tavis Smiley

Tavis Smiley was found by a jury to have violated PBS' morals clause, and the network will be awarded $1.486 million from a countersuit of its former host.

"We are pleased with the jury's decision," a PBS spokesperson said in a statement. "PBS expects our producing partners to provide a workplace where people feel safe and are treated with dignity and respect. It was important for us to ensure that the courageous women who came forward were able to share their stories, and we continue to uphold the values and standards of our organization."

PBS was seeking $1.9 million in returned salary.

The American talk show host sued the broadcast network in February of 2018, accusing it of using a fake investigation to get his show canceled. PBS countersued, pointing to Smiley's alleged sexual misconduct with female employees as a breach of contract. The jury made its decision in favor of PBS Wednesday after beginning deliberations on Monday.

In January, PBS first made public the findings of its investigation into Smiley's behavior, but the report was unsealed this week as part of the ongoing legal wrangling. According to the report, compiled by an external investigator, Smiley is accused of misconduct dating back decades.

Release Date Moving

'No Time To Die'

With the coronavirus socking it to the Asian box office, Deadline has learned that MGM, Eon and Universal are postponing the next James Bond movie, No Time to Die from its UK and international release date of April 2 and its U.S. Easter weekend global day-and-date of April 10, and moving the 25th 007 movie to Nov. 25, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.

"MGM, Universal and Bond producers, Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, announced today that after careful consideration and thorough evaluation of the global theatrical marketplace, the release of No Time to Die will be postponed until November 2020. The film will be released in the U.K. on November 12, 2020 with worldwide release dates to follow, including the U.S. launch on November 25, 2020," said a statement given exclusively to Deadline by the three studios.

That date brings Bond back to November, which is a season he's launched from largely going back to 1995's Goldeneye (except for Tomorrow Never Dies which opened in the U.S/Canada on Dec. 19, 1997). No Time to Die will now face off on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving with Warner Bros. Will Smith King Richard, Disney's Raya and the Last Dragon, and Sony's comedy The Happiest Season.

This is purely an economic decision we understand, and not one based on growing fears over the coronavirus. Bond is a day-and-date worldwide release, and with the franchise back in the hands of MGM fully post Sony's distribution of the last four Daniel Craig movies, along with Universal, all parties involved need to have all foreign territories working at their maximum in order for the latest Bond to be a continued box office success. For a tentpole of this size and scope, that kind of decrease in business would have a significant and detrimental impact on the film's ultimate global take.

Reunion Tour

Genesis

Genesis are reuniting in November to tour arenas all around the United Kingdom and Ireland.

The band has not played together in any capacity since the end of the Turn It on Again tour in 2007. The lineup this time features classic-era members Phil Collins, Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford, along with long-time touring guitarist/bassist Daryl Stuermer and, for the first time, Phil's son Nic Collins on drums.

The 10-date tour - called "The Last Domino?" in a nod to the band's two-part 1986 song "Domino" - begins November 16th at Dublin's 3 Arena and wraps up December 11th at Newcastle, England's Newcastle Utilita Arena. Tickets for most shows go on sale Friday, March 6th at 9:00 a.m. U.K. time.

A Genesis reunion of any sort seemed very unlikely just a few years ago. Collins was not only unable to play drums because of extensive nerve damage to his hands, but he also said he was retired from the music industry. He declared himself "no longer officially retired" in 2015 and began playing solo shows in 2017. His teenage son Nic played the drums and Phil sat in a chair for the entire show, but it still packed arenas and stadiums all over the globe across a two-year period.

Alleged Scheme

Journey

Journey's Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain have fired long-time bassist Ross Valory and drummer Steve Smith from the band after accusing them of trying to fund their retirement by wresting control of the band's name.

On Tuesday, lawyers for Schon and Cain filed a lawsuit in the Superior Court of Contra Costa County, California, alleging that Smith and Valory tried to launch "a coup to assume control of one of the band's corporate entities, Nightmare Productions, Inc." The suit claims that Smith and Valory incorrectly believed that controlling Nightmare Productions would allow them to gain control of the Journey mark, thus providing them "windfall payments in the millions of dollars… after their retirement."

The suit calls Smith and Valory's alleged scheme "not only malicious but also very ill-conceived." It states that Nightmare Productions does not control the Journey name, but that Nightmare Productions granted an "exclusive, irrevocable license of the Journey Mark" to another band entity, Elmo Partners, which was started by Cain, Schon and former lead singer, Steve Perry. Nightmare Productions purportedly granted Elmo Partners the exclusive license to the Journey trademark back in 1985; when Perry left the band in 1998, he signed an agreement allowing Cain and Schon to keep recording and touring under the Journey name.

According to the suit, Smith and Valory launched their plan to oust Cain and Schon from Nightmare Productions and take control of the group last December, although things didn't start to take shape until January 31st. That day, an attorney named Daniel Schacht sent sent emails to convene back-to-back meetings for the shareholders and board of directors of Nightmare Productions. The notices called for increasing the number of board members from three to six, allegedly allowing Smith, Valory and two of their allies to join it, and then using the reconstructed board to replace Cain with Smith as president of the board.

Immigration Judge Retires

Philadelphia

An immigration judge in Philadelphia has stepped down from the bench early citing pressure from the Trump administration, which he says is turning the Immigration Court into a "politburo rubber stamp".

Speaking to the Philadephia Inquirer, Judge Charles Honeyman described how he left the bench earlier than he had planned after the government began taking a harder line on immigration and deportation cases.

"At some point I was just not comfortable," he told the paper.

Judge Honeyman is now joining the immigration law firm of Solow, Isbell, & Palladino, which specialises in immigration cases. There, he will provide litigation advice to clients facing deportation.

The Immigration Court system sits outside the judiciary and is governed instead by the Justice Department's Executive Office for Immigration Review. That means it is subject to direct political pressure from the administration, including instructions from the attorney general, whose interpretation of the law immigration judges are meant to follow.

Virus Halts Pilgrimages

Mecca

The coronavirus outbreak disrupted Islamic worship in the Middle East as Saudi Arabia on Wednesday banned its citizens and other residents of the kingdom from performing the pilgrimage in Mecca, while Iran canceled Friday prayers in major cities.

The decisions in Riyadh and Tehran affected both Sunni and Shiite Muslims alike.

The Saudi move expands a ban last week on foreigners visiting Mecca and Medina, home to the holiest sites in Islam. That decision alone disrupted travel for thousands of Muslims already headed to the kingdom and potentially affects plans later this year for millions more ahead of the fasting month of Ramadan and the annual hajj pilgrimage.

Even after that Feb. 27 announcement, people already in Saudi Arabia could still travel to Mecca's Grand Mosque, where pilgrims circle the black, cube-shaped Kaaba that Muslims around the world pray toward five times a day. The crowds were far smaller than usual before Wednesday's statement from an unidentified Interior Ministry official that was carried by the state-run Saudi Press Agency.

It remains unclear how the ban will be enforced. The government described the suspension as "temporary," but gave no hint at when it will be lifted. The ban also appeared to encompass the Prophet Muhammad's Mosque in nearby Medina.

Not A Square To Spare

Australia

Australia's major grocers put strict limits on purchases of toilet paper on Wednesday, after shoppers stripped shelves in a rush of panic buying spurred by fears over a coronavirus, while the country recorded its fourth case of local transmission.

One of the first nations to take a hard line in tackling the epidemic, Australia imposed border controls a month ago on visitors from the epicentre of the outbreak in China.

However, Australia now has 44 cases, four of them involving people who caught the disease despite not having left the country.

Despite the few sufferers compared to countries such as Iran and South Korea, social media has been awash in recent days with photographs and videos of people stockpiling goods, from staples to sanitisers.

The demand for toilet paper, in particular, has sparked the trending hashtags #toiletpapergate and #toiletpapercrisis on Twitter, along with photographs of overloaded shopping trolleys, and calls for calm from baffled officials.

Some People Don't Have

Internal Monologue

I don't know about you, but I'd always just assumed that even though people think different (and mostly wrong - do better, everybody) thoughts from myself, everyone sort of thinks in roughly the same way that I do.

Well, it turns out that is not the case at all, and I'm far from alone in my mistake. A tweet went viral last week, and it's sparked a lot of conversation about whether or not people have internal monologues.

A (non-scientific) poll on inner monologues showed that the majority of people experience their thoughts as words (currently around 58 percent), with 14 percent experiencing thoughts as concepts, and 19 percent experiencing both.

In more scientific studies, it seems people experience more of a mix than the self-selected responders to a viral post that implied it was either/or.
