Anecdotes

Gays and Lesbians

• Due to TV’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the heterosexual Alyson Hannigan became a gay icon because she played Willow Rosenberg, a character who had a positive same-sex relationship with the character Tara Maclay, played by Amber Benson. However, in an alternate universe the gay icon may be Sarah Michelle Gellar, who played Buffy. In the movie Cruel Intentions, Sarah played a character who had some lesbian scenes, and in fact, her character’s lesbian kiss with the character played by Selma Blair won an award for Best Screen Kiss at the MTV Movie Awards. Shortly afterward, Sarah filmed the movie Scoobie-Doo, in which her character, Daphne, exchanges bodies with the character Fred, then kisses the character played by Linda Cardellini. For a while, Sarah was excited that her second on-screen, same-sex kiss might win for her a second award for Best Screen Kiss at the MTV Movie Awards, but unfortunately, that scene ended up on the cutting-room floor, disappointing lesbians and straight men everywhere.

• Michael Thomas Ford once attended a screening of What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? in a New York theater filled with gay men. As the movie was shown on the screen, half of the audience recited Bette Davis’ lines from memory, while the other half recited Joan Crawford’s lines from memory.

Gifts

• One of Marlene Dietrich’s heroes was Alexander Fleming, the discoverer of penicillin. As an entertainer of GIs in Europe during World War II, Ms. Dietrich knew that Mr. Fleming’s discovery had saved the lives of thousands of soldiers. When she had the chance five years after the war, she invited him to dinner. After dinner, Mr. Fleming gave Ms. Dietrich a gift — a small glass jar containing the very first penicillin culture.

• Canadian figure skater Toller Cranston once did a movie with Artur Rubinstein, after which Mr. Rubinstein gave him five gallons of a very expensive Guerlain men’s cologne in a cut-glass decanter. It was impossible to use that much cologne in the regular way — so Mr. Cranston took a bath in it.

Husbands and Wives

• Celebrities sometimes must have long-distance relationships with loved ones because of their work. When actress Halle Berry was making the TV movie Solomon and Sheba in Africa, she was separated from her then-husband, baseball player David Justice, by an ocean. For the first month they were apart, their long-distance telephone bill was $4,500. In October of 1995, Mr. Justice won the World Series for his team — the Braves — by hitting a home run. Ms. Berry was watching the game on TV — 3,000 miles away because she was making a movie.

• Ballet dancer Jacques d’Amboise courted another dancer, Caroline George, but he got off to a bad start with her family. They were conservative, and so being a male ballet dancer was bad, in their opinion. In addition, he showed up with long hair (a no-no) that had been dyed red (another no-no) for his role in the movie Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Finally, he tried to show off his knowledge of the wines of Europe, then discovered that her family didn’t drink. Still, all ended well. He and Caroline (aka Carrie) married and had children.

• Ilka Chase was once married briefly to the much-married actor Louis Calhern. After her divorce, she sent a box of calling cards engraved “Mrs. Louis Calhern” to Julia Hoyt, Mr. Calhern’s next wife, with the note, “Dear Julia: I hope these reach you in time.”

• Actor Robert Morley’s wife once tried to bluff her way into a hotel dining room that had been reserved for General Motors. She told the hotel staff, “The General is a good friend of mine. He will be delighted to see me.” (The bluff didn’t work.)

Trivia Question from Yesterday

Covered in French as "Ces bottes sont faites pour marcher", and in German as "Die Stiefel sind zum wandern", this song hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in January, 1966. By what title is this song more familiarly known?

These Boots Are Made For Walkin'                                                      Source

"These Boots Are Made for Walkin'" is a hit song written by Lee Hazlewood and recorded by Nancy Sinatra. It charted on January 22, 1966 and reached No. 1 in the United States Billboard Hot 100 and in the UK Singles Chart.

Subsequently, many cover versions of the song have been released in a range of styles: metal, pop, rock, punk rock, country, dance, and industrial. Among the more notable versions are the singles released by Megadeth, Billy Ray Cyrus, Haley Reinhart, and Jessica Simpson.

Lee Hazlewood intended to record the song himself, saying that "it's not really a girl's song", but Sinatra talked him out of it, saying that "coming from a guy it was harsh and abusive, but was perfect for a little girl to sing". Hazlewood agreed. Sinatra's recording of the song was made with the help of Los Angeles session musicians known as the Wrecking Crew. This session included Hal Blaine on drums, Al Casey, Tommy Tedesco, and Billy Strange on guitars, Ollie Mitchell, Roy Caton and Lew McCreary on horns, Carol Kaye on electric bass and Chuck Berghofer on double bass, providing the notable bass line. Nick Bonney was the guitarist for the Nelson Riddle Orchestra.

The song was covered in French, as "Ces bottes sont faites pour marcher", by New York-born singer Eileen Goldsen, known simply as Eileen, who also recorded a German version, "Die Stiefel sind zum wandern", an Italian version, "Questi stivali sono fatti per camminare", and an English version in competition with Nancy Sinatra's recording.        Source

Memoir Due Out In November

Paul McCartney

Paul McCartney is finally ready to write his memoirs, and will use music — and a Pulitzer Prize-winning poet — to help guide him.

“The Lyrics: 1956 to the Present” will be released Nov. 2, according to a joint announcement Wednesday from the British publisher Allen Lane and from Liveright in the United States.

McCartney, 78, will trace his life through 154 songs, from his teens and early partnership with fellow Beatle John Lennon to his solo work over the past half century. Irish poet Paul Muldoon is editing and will contribute an introduction.

Financial terms for “The Lyrics,” which has a list price of $100, were not disclosed. Publishers have long sought a McCartney memoir, even though he has spoken often about the past and has participated in such projects as Barry Miles' biography “Paul McCartney: Many Years From Now,” and the 1990s documentary and book “The Beatles Anthology." The Rolling Stones' Keith Richards has been equally open about himself, but his 2010 memoir “Life” still sold millions of copies.

According to McCartney's publishers, his songs will be arranged alphabetically, and will include McCartney's comments on when and where they were written and what inspired them. The U.S. edition of the book will be broken into two volumes, contained within a single box.

Jeep Reinstates Ad

Bruce Springsteen

In the wake of Bruce Springsteen’s minor penalty after being arrested for allegedly driving under the influence last November, Jeep has reinstated its high-profile Super Bowl ad starring the singer.

After news of the arrest emerged earlier this month — just days after the ad first aired — Jeep removed the ad from YouTube and other sites, in a commentary against drunk driving. In a hearing on Wednesday, Springsteen pleaded guilty to consuming alcohol in a restricted area, but the driving under the influence and reckless driving charges were dropped for lack of evidence. The singer was fined $500 plus fees.”As we stated previously, we paused the commercial until the facts were established,” a rep for Jeep wrote in a statement to Variety. “Now, that the matter has been resolved, we are unpausing the film.”

The singer was arrested on Nov. 14 near the Sandy Hook Lighthouse in Gateway National Recreation Area, a federal park along the northern New Jersey coast. He had apparently consumed one or two shots of tequila that had been offered by fans, and was arrested almost immediately after starting his motorcycle.

News of Springsteen’s arrest did not surface until February 10 th and although the singer’s camp did not comment on the matter, as more details arose, the story became more confusing. Fans were baffled that such a thing would happen to the singer — who is not a teetotaler but has never been known to be a heavy drinker — and Jeep quickly removed the recent Super Bowl ad starring Springsteen from their YouTube page.

Further unconfirmed details emerged that presented conflicting versions of the severity of the offense. The Asbury Park Press (a town near to Springsteen’s home that often featured in Springsteen’s songs) cited a law-enforcement report as saying the singer’s blood alcohol level was .02 — far below the legal limit of .08 — and the New York Post cited a “source close to Springsteen” as saying the 71-year-old singer had accepted a single shot of tequila offered by a fan. The source said Springsteen had been riding his motorcycle in the Gateway National Recreation Area, a federal park in Sandy Hook, N.J., and pulled over to take pictures with fans; he then accepted the shot offered by one of them, in full view of police officers.

Reboot Confirmed

Frasier Crane

Dr. Frasier Crane is officially coming back.

Kelsey Grammer is confirmed to reprise his role as the Seattle psychiatrist turned radio host in a reboot of long-running comedy Frasier for Paramount+.

The new incarnation of Frasier comes from writers Chris Harris (How I Met Your Mother) and Joe Cristalli (Life In Pieces), who will exec produce with Grammer, Tom Russo and Jordan McMahon. The series will be produced by CBS Studios in association with Grammnet Productions.

Grammer had been leading the efforts to revive the series, which originally ran for 11 seasons between 1993 and 2004 on NBC, for the last couple of years. Created by David Angell, Peter Casey, and David Lee, the show also starred David Hyde Pierce, Jane Leeves, Peri Gilpin, and the late John Mahoney.

Paramount+ didn’t reveal any other talent for the reboot, although Deadline understands that Hyde Pierce, who played Frasier’s brother Niles, has been approached about returning.

Piñata

One store owner decided to take a controversy on the news and make it into a party item.

Carlos De La Fuente, the owner of ABC Party HQ in Dallas, created a piñata inspired by the viral photos of Sen. Rafael "Ted" Cruz, R-Bad Dad, walking through the Cancún International Airport. The image circulated widely following the backlash over the senator's recent trip to Mexico amid the state's historic winter storm.

The store created the unique design as the storm forced it to close for six days starting Feb. 13.

“That’s the reason that I’ve gotten creative and made some piñatas, so that people can come and support,” De La Fuente told NBC News. “I’m always looking for something positive out of negative things so that we can all get a laugh out of it.”

The 3 1/2 foot piñata sells for $100 and though they are only sold at the store, it has already led to around $2,000 in sales as of Tuesday.

Refuses To Lower Flags

Palm Beach County

Palm Beach County defied Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-Bone In His Ear) on Wednesday, refusing to lower its courthouse flags to half-staff in honor of the late conservative broadcaster hate-mongering fascist propagandist Rush Limbaugh — a move that the governor’s office called “petty.”

The county’s courthouse flags remained at full staff, ignoring Gov. Ron DeSantis’ Tuesday afternoon order directing its U.S. and Florida flags to be flown at half-staff. He also ordered the Town of Palm Beach and the State Capitol in Tallahassee to fly their flags at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Wednesday. Those flags were lowered.

Palm Beach County would only say it followed “normal protocols” on Wednesday, but Commissioner Melissa McKinlay posted a statement on Twitter saying, “The lowering of flags should be a unifying gesture during solemn occasions, such as in remembrance of the young lives lost during the Parkland High School massacre or first responder line of duty deaths.” She was referring to the 2018 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas in nearby Parkland that left 17 dead.

McKinlay continued: “Although Rush Limbaugh was a significant public figure, he was also an incredibly divisive one who hurt many people with his words and actions.”

‘Will Not Be Lectured’

Gerry Connolly

Virginia Democratic Representative Gerry Connolly blasted Ohio Republican Representative and staunch Trump ally Gym Jordan (R-Perv Protector), telling him during a hearing on the postal service that he "will not be lectured" about partisanship by people who voted to overturn the election.

The hearing before the House Oversight Committee included questioning of the president of the American Postal Workers Union Mark Dimondstein and the Postmaster-General, Trump appointee Louis DeJoy (R-Inexcusable).

Mr Jordan defended Mr DeJoy who he argued had been unfairly criticised by Democrats during the lead-up to the 2020 election, saying: "They accused you of things, they said you were restricting overtime - False. They told you you were taking the collection boxes, doing something that had never been done before, even though it had been done by every Postmaster-General.

Addressing Mr Dimondstein, Mr Connolly said: "All the gaslighting that we just heard does not change facts.

Interrupting, Mr Connolly added: "The point is, it was Donald Trump (R-Lock Him Up), the Republican nominee who was planting the idea, aided and abetted by disruptive changes proposed by a new Postmaster-General, and a compliant Board of Governors, that actually eroded public confidence in the ability to vote by mail.

“That wasn't a Democratic narrative, that was a Republican narrative by the President of the United States and his enablers... I didn't vote to overturn an election and I will not be lectured by people who did about partisanship."

Gerry Connolly

"A street scene in Montmartre"

Vincent Van Gogh

A painting of a Paris street scene by Vincent Van Gogh is to be shown to the public for the first time, after spending more than a century behind closed doors in the private collection of a French family.

The work, painted by Van Gogh in 1887 while he was lodging with his brother Theo in the French capital, will be put on display by Sotheby's auction house in Amsterdam, Hong Kong, and Paris, prior to being auctioned off next month.

The auction house put an estimated value on the artwork of between 5 million euros ($6.08 million)and 8 million euros.

Titled "A street scene in Montmartre," the painting depicts a man and woman, strolling arm in arm past a ramshackle fence with a windmill in the background.

The painting is part of a series that Van Gogh produced of scenes in Montmartre, a hilly district of Paris now dominated by the Sacre Coeur church.

Himalayan Lake

Roopkund

High in the Indian Himalayas, a four-to-five-day trek from the nearest village, sits an unassuming glacial lake called Roopkund. The spot is beautiful, a dollop of jewel-toned water amid rough gravel and scree, but hardly out of the ordinary for the rugged landscape — except for the hundreds of human bones scattered within and around the lake.

These bones, belonging to between 300 and 800 people, have been a mystery since a forest ranger first reported them to the broader world in 1942. Lately, though, the mystery has only deepened. In 2019, a new genetic analysis of the ancient DNA in the bones, detailed in the journal Nature Communications, found that at least 14 of the people who died at the lake probably weren't from South Asia. Instead, their genes match those of modern-day people of the eastern Mediterranean.

What's more, these bones were far newer than most of the others at the lake, which date to around 800; the people with apparent Mediterranean heritage seem to instead have died around 1800. So what on Earth was a group from the Mediterranean doing above 16,500 feet (5,029 meters) in a far-flung corner of the Himalayas? And how did they die?

Oral histories passed down by the villagers nearby offer more illumination. The lake is on a pilgrimage trail for Nanda Devi, a manifestation of the Hindu goddess Parvati. According to local legend, a distant king once angered Nanda Devi, causing her to unleash drought upon his kingdom. To appease the goddess, the king set off on a pilgrimage that took him and his entourage past Roopkund, in what is now the state of Uttarakhand. But the foolish king brought dancers and other luxuries on the trek, intensifying Nanda Devi's rage. She conjured a terrible hailstorm and killed the entire party, the legend goes.
