Mark Morford: Arise, Daily Show Generation! Your nation beckons (SF Gate)
While Fox News' Army of Dumb is indeed much larger, it's also unable to form complete sentences, much less comprehend them. This is, as Stewart taught every single night, your secret weapon. It takes but a few minutes of research, a nimble mind, an untiring sense of humor and a well-honed BS-detector to reduce that bloviated demon to its original state of quivering, terrified termite dung.
Mark Morford: The grand grotesquery of the U.S. military (SF Gate)
Really, how can you not be sort of amazed, in a gross-all-over kind of way, when you see how the US military budget is so vast, so grotesquely outsized that, at upwards of $600 billion, it not only dwarfs all other expenditures in our economy, it's actually larger than the military budgets of the next 10 major world powers on the planet, combined?

Gary Harold Lee Levitch, the eldest son of comedian Jerry Lewis, was born on July 31, 1946. Gary was supposed to have been named "Cary," because of his mother's great love of movie actor Cary Grant, but the hospital he was delivered in made a clerical error and he was to be "Gary" forevermore.

Will Bolt: 4 Horrifying Things Substitute Teachers Learn on Day One (Cracked)
So you're fed up with your office desk job. Feel like making a difference? Have you ever wanted to know what it's like to do a job that could just as easily be accomplished by a corpse with a voice recorder? Good news! Chances are you're already more than qualified to be a substitute teacher. Now hold on and put down the tweed coat, because there are a few things you should know before you rush off to shape the minds of young people.
Most consumers are unaware that the phrases "cochineal extract", "carmine", "crimson lake", "natural red 4", or even "natural coloring" refer to a dye derived from a(n) _____?_____
The cochineal (Dactylopius coccus) is a scale insect in the suborder Sternorrhyncha, from which the crimson-colored natural dye carmine is derived. A primarily sessile parasite native to tropical and subtropical South America and Mexico, this insect lives on cacti in the genus Opuntia, feeding on plant moisture and nutrients.
It has become commercially valuable again, although most consumers are unaware that the phrases "cochineal extract", "carmine", "crimson lake", "natural red 4", "C.I. 75470", "E120", or even "natural colouring" refer to a dye derived from an insect. One reason for its popularity is many commercial synthetic red dyes were found to be carcinogenic.

Oh well, I can't resist. I like "You Don't Own Me" just fine, but as a proto-feminist song, it doesn't really compare to Dionne Warwick doing "Don't Make Me Over ".

It's been said that Carla and I know everything, and that's mostly true, but sometimes we need a little help. In those rare cases we call upon our good friend Barney to help us out. Barney really does know everything. So here's what Barney has to say about today's question.
"Cochineal insects - Dactylopius coccus - are scale insects of the suborder Sternorrhyncha. They are used to make the crimson colored dye called carmine.
A tiny parasite native to subtropical South America and Mexico, the insect lives on cacti from which it derives its moisture and nutrients. As a chemical defense mechanism the little bug produces carminic acid which deters predation by other insects due to its bitter taste. Carminic acid, about 20 percent of the total dried body weight, can be extracted from the shell and eggs after the insects are gathered. When carminic acid is reacted with certain aluminum or calcium salts it yields carmine dye.
Sometimes this dye is called cochineal. Today, cochineal is used primarily for coloring food and cosmetics. Many consumers are unaware that the phrases "cochineal extract," "carmine," "crimson lake," "natural red 4," "C.I. 75470," "E120", or even "natural coloring" refer to a dye that is derived from ground up insect bodies."
PS. If you don't recognize Barney you're probably no older than 55.
As you all know the untimely passing of Terry was unexpected, even by
him. We all knew he had cancer but we all thought he had some years
left. So some of us who have worked closely with him over the years are
scrambling around trying to figure out what to do. My job, among other
things, is to establish communications with the Bartcop community and
provide email lists and groups for those who might put something
together. Those who want to play an active roll in something coming from
this, or if you are one of Bart's pillars, should send an email to

More than 20 years after his death, there is still plenty of news about Dr. Seuss.
Random House Children's Books said Wednesday it will publish a recently discovered manuscript with illustrations called "What Pet Should I Get" on July 28. The publisher plans at least two more books, based on materials found in 2013 in the author's home in La Jolla, California, by his widow and secretary.
The author whose real name was Theodor Geisel died in 1991.
Random House associate publishing director Cathy Goldsmith says "What Pet Should I Get?" was likely written between 1958 and 1962. The book features the same brother and sister seen in Dr. Seuss' 1960 classic "One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish."

Russian punk rock group Pussy Riot released their first song in English on Wednesday, a musical tribute to Eric Garner, the unarmed black man whose death in a police chokehold last summer sparked wide protests against police violence.
Nadya Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina recorded the song, "I Can't Breathe," in New York last December after a grand jury decided not to indict a white New York City police officer in Garner's death.
The pair said they dedicated their first song in English to Garner and titled it, "I can't breathe,' which were the words he repeated before his death.
The song begins with the lyrics, "He's become his death/The spark of the riots/That's the way he's blessed/To stay alive," and ends with punk pioneer Richard Hell reading Garner's final words.
Academy Award winner Michael Douglas will receive the George Eastman Award for his contributions to the film industry.
The George Eastman House said Wednesday that the star of films including "Wall Street" and "Basic Instinct" will receive the award during a May 14 ceremony at the Dryden Theatre, followed by a black-tie gala at the Rochester museum dedicated to photography and motion picture.
Douglas has produced and acted in more than 75 films and television series. He won one Oscar for best actor for 1987's "Wall Street" and one for best film for co-producing "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" in 1975.
The Eastman Award, established in 1955, is named for the photography innovator who founded Rochester-based Eastman Kodak.
Previous award winners include Charlie Chaplin, Gregory Peck, Martin Scorsese, Meryl Streep and Richard Gere.

Spider silk may lose its claim as the strongest known natural material after researchers found that limpet teeth have more mettle.
Spider silk is hailed by scientists for its strength and structure, but researchers in Britain have discovered that limpets -- snail-like sea creatures with conical shells -- have teeth with structures so strong they could be copied and used in making cars, boats and planes.
"Until now we thought that spider silk was the strongest biological material because of its super-strength and potential applications in everything from bullet-proof vests to computer electronics," said Asa Barber, a professor at Portsmouth University's school of engineering, who led the study.
"But now we have discovered that limpet teeth exhibit a strength that is potentially higher."
Barber's team examined the detailed mechanical behaviour of teeth from limpets with atomic force microscopy, a method used to pull apart materials all the way down to the level of the atom. They found the teeth contain a hard mineral known as goethite, which forms in the limpet as it grows.
The Franciscan friar who brought Christianity to California in the 18th century is on track for sainthood, but for Native Americans, his legacy is anything but holy.
Junipero Serra founded the first nine of what would become 21 Spanish missions stretching from San Diego to San Francisco, giving the Roman Catholic Church a firm foothold in what was then called New Spain.
Beatified by Pope John Paul II in September 1988, he is set to be canonized when his successor Pope Francis makes his first papal visit to the United States in September.
"We strongly oppose naming the murderer of our people and culture a saint," said Toypurina Carac, spokesman for the Kizh Gabrieleno nation in greater Los Angeles.
Elias Castillo, author of "A Cross of Thorns: the Enslavement of California's Indians by the Spanish Missions," said the Catholic outposts were veritable "death camps."
The Roman Catholic archdiocese of Cologne published financial accounts Wednesday, showing for the first time the full extent of its worldly wealth.
The archdiocese has long been considered Germany's richest, but exact figures weren't known because the church never published its accounts. Documents posted on its website show Cologne had assets of 3.35 billion euros ($3.82 billion) at the end of 2013.
In 2013, the archdiocese received 573 million euros from church taxes paid by the 2 million Catholics living in the region around Cologne, famous for its Gothic cathedral. After adding other income and subtracting expenses - such as salaries - it generated a surplus of 59 million euros.
The archdiocese's finance chief, Hermann J. Schon, described the publication as "a big step toward financial transparency." It follows criticism of Germany's Catholic Church in the wake of a recent scandal over the former bishop of Limburg's lavish spending.

Israel on Wednesday unveiled the largest collection of medieval gold coins ever found in the country, accidentally discovered by amateur divers and dating back about a thousand years.
The find was made two weeks ago near the Israeli port city of Caesarea and consists of some 2,000 coins, weighing about 6 kilograms (13 pounds), the Israel Antiquities Authority said.
The coins were likely swept up in recent storms, said Kobi Sharvit, director of the authority's marine archaeology unit, adding that they provided "fascinating and rare historical evidence" from the Fatimid era in the 10th and 11th centuries.
The divers initially thought they had spotted toy coins but later showed a few of them to officials.
Marine archeologists, using metal detectors, then found the larger haul with coins of various denominations, dimensions and weight. The divers handed over all the coins.
