• In 1982, Morgan Freeman auditioned for a small part in the movie Harry and Son, starring Paul Newman. Mr. Freeman did not get the role, but when Mr. Newman discovered that such a talented actor had not gotten a role in two years, he made sure that Mr. Freeman received another role in the movie.
• While attending Yale University, movie actress Jodie Foster got a role in an off-campus student play — her first role on the stage. On opening night, she warned reporters that they had better write about more than just her — because if they wrote about just her, the other actors “will kill me.”
• Olsen and Johnson were a comedy team who made their best movies in the early 1940s. Harold Ogden (Chic) Johnson knew immediately that he wanted John Sigvard (Ole) Olsen as a partner because Ole was “the first man I ever heard imitate a busy signal on the telephone.”
• One of Marilyn Monroe’s early roles consisted of walking across the stage in the Marx Brothers film Love Happy. When she met comedian Groucho Marx, he asked, “Can you walk?” She replied, “I learned to walk when I was a baby, and I haven’t had a lesson since.”
• Lucille Ball was very happy when she learned that a part was available for a “Lucille Ball type.” She let the movie studio know that she would be available in a week, but the studio decided that she wasn’t the type they needed for the role.
• Bert Lahr played the Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz, but after that he didn’t work much in films. He once explained why: “After The Wizard of Oz I was typecast as a lion, and there aren’t all that many parts for lions.”
• In her old age, Katherine Hepburn suffered from a tremor in her voice and her face. Film critic Gene Siskel asked her why she continued to act with such a tremor. She replied, “What choice do I have?”
Ad-libs
• Texas actor Marco Perella appeared in the TV movie Fatal Deception: Mrs. Lee Harvey Oswald. He played a Texas Lothario, while English Shakespearean actress Helena Bonham-Carter played Mrs. Oswald, who was a Russian immigrant with (of course) a Russian accent. Ms. Bonham-Carter is very small and very light, and Mr. Perella ad-libbed during a scene with her. He picked her up and danced with her, then raised her in his arms and dipped and twirled her and even put a piece of celery in his mouth and tickled her neck with it. All this time, Ms. Bonham-Carter was shrieking and giggling and whooping, and Mr. Perella was congratulating himself on doing something to make a renowned Shakespearean actress lose control — when suddenly he noticed that all the shrieks and all the giggles and all the whoops were being delivered by Ms. Bonham-Carter with an impeccable Russian accent. After the scene was shot, Ms. Bonham-Carter told him (with, of course, an impeccable English accent), “I say, dearie, that bit with the celery was perfectly ripping.”
• Both Mike Nichols and Elaine May could be hostile, and both were masters of the put-down. Ms. May, a beautiful woman, was once followed by two men who blew kisses at her. Never one to take BS, she turned around to face the men and asked them, “What’s the matter? Tired of each other?” When one man replied, “F**k you,” she replied, “With what?” While Mr. Nichols was directing The Odd Couple, he gave actor Walter Matthau a direction that the actor thought was emasculating, so he asked Mr. Nichols, “Mike, can I have my c**k back now?” Mr. Nichols yelled, “Props!”
Initially recorded by Lulu, this theme from a James Clavell scripted and directed film became the best-selling single of 1967 in the United States. What is the title of this song?
"To Sir with Love" is the theme from James Clavell's 1967 film To Sir, with Love. The song was performed by British singer and actress Lulu (who also starred in the film), and written by Don Black and Mark London (husband of Lulu's longtime manager Marion Massey). Mickie Most produced the record, with Mike Leander arranging and conducting. The song peaked at the top of the Billboard Hot 100, and became the best-selling single of 1967 in the United States. At the time, it made Lulu only the second British female artist to top the US charts during the listing's Rock era after Petula Clark's "Downtown" in 1965 — and third in the overall history of the US charts after "Downtown" and Vera Lynn's "Auf Wiederseh'n Sweetheart" in 1952 — and so far the first of two Scottish female solo artists to achieve the feat. Sheena Easton became the second when she topped the US charts with Morning Train (Nine to Five) in May 1981. For 44 years, Lulu and Easton were the only Scottish solo artists to have topped the Billboard Hot 100 — a record that ended when Calvin Harris topped the chart alongside Rihanna on their collaboration "We Found Love" in November 2011.
"To Sir With Love" was initially recorded by Lulu (with The Mindbenders, who also acted in the film). It was released as a single in the United States in 1967 and in October reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, where it remained for five weeks. The single ranked No. 1 in Billboard's year-end chart, though the Monkees' "I'm a Believer", which debuted in December 1966 and spent most of its chart life in 1967, was the overall bigger hit. ("I'm a Believer" was ranked No. 5 on the same year-end chart of the same year.) It became a gold record.

To Sir With Love. I never knew that James Clavell was a scriptwriter and film director before he wrote his best selling novels. His 4 years as a Japanese POW gave him a keen interest in Japan and the far east. Born in Australia to a British soldier and his wife, Clavell became a naturalized US citizen in 1963 and he lived most of his life after WWII in the US.

Because of Sidney Poitier's "role reversal", Lulu also had a bit part
besides singing the title song of "To Sir, With Love".

Lulu's big hit in 1967 was "To Sir With Love." It got a lot of play for a good part of the year, although for me, "We Gotta Get Out of This Place" by the Animals, had more meaning as we went through Air Force basic training in December of that year.

“Another week, another collection of dreams. 22 artists from all around the world. A brilliant and varied compilation of independent music from a wide array of genres and styles. The title is a nod to Brooks Dixon's fantastic POCKETFUL OF DREAMS record, an album that I constantly come back to. A song from which, 'Without You', is also fittingly included here. It demonstrates the soulful take on roots rock that Brooks has become renowned for. The Democrats running the impeachment are making a HUGE MISTAKE.
They are not using the word "LIE" enough.
Donald Trump claiming the election was rigged is a LIE.
Trump saying that he "won in a landslide" is a LIE. (The TRUTH is; he LOST in a landslide - BOTH the electoral college and popular votes)
The claims that voting machines were tampered with or otherwise "fixed" are LIES.
"Under the table ballots", "dead people voting", "massive voter fraud" are all LIES and every time anyone who worked for him TOLD him they were false he FIRED them and replaced them with someone who was willing to support the LIE.
And because it was the President of the United States who was telling those lies, millions of not-too-bright and gullible people believed him. And that led to the storming of our capitol where the floors were defecated on and the walls were urinated upon.
Hundreds injured. Cops lost fingers and eyes and lives.
A cop was beaten savagely with a flag pole upon which the American Flag was still attached.
Three cops are dead.
Senators' offices were looted and trashed.
Hundreds of people arrested.
Because the president LIED.
The Democrats should be HAMMERING on that word:
All of this happened because President Trump LIED and kept on LYING and now EX-President Trump is STILL brazenly lying, and THAT'S why he should never hold office again.
Unless he isn't lying and really believes that he won - if so, he's delusional - in which case he should never hold office again.
Those are really the only two choices: he's either lying or he's sick in the head.
Which is worse?
And remember: the Republicans impeached Bill Clinton because he lied - ABOUT A BLOW JOB!
Flat tire capped another swell visit to the laundromat-of-the-darned.

The nominations for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s class of 2021 are in and the list features Jay-Z, Foo Fighters, Mary J. Blige, Iron Maiden, Tina Turner, the Go-Go’s, Rage Against the Machine, Kate Bush, Devo, Chaka Khan, Carole King, Fela Kuti, LL Cool J, New York Dolls, Todd Rundgren, and Dionne Warwick. The top vote-getters will be announced in May and inducted in a Cleveland, Ohio, ceremony in the fall.
To be eligible for this year’s ballot, each nominee’s first single or album had to have been released in 1995 or earlier. Seven of the 16 acts on the ballot (Foo Fighters, the Go-Go’s, Iron Maiden, Jay-Z, Tina Turner, Fela Kuti, and Dionne Warwick) are appearing for the first time, although Carole King was inducted along with Gerry Goffin as a non-performer in 1990 and Tina Tuner entered the institution in 1991 along with Ike Turner.
If King and Turner are inducted, they’ll be the second and third female artists to enter the Hall of Fame twice following Stevie Nicks in 2019. It’s also an opportunity for Dave Grohl to enter the Hall of Fame for a second time following his 2014 induction as a member of Nirvana. Foo Fighters and Jay-Z are the only acts this year to appear on the ballot in their first year of eligibility.
This is the sixth ballot appearance for LL Cool J; a third for Todd Rundgren, Rage Against the Machine, and Chaka Khan; and the second for Kate Bush, Devo, Carole King, and the New York Dolls.
One of the most streamed songs on Morgan Wallen’s four-week Number One album Dangerous: The Double Album is “Cover Me Up,” Wallen’s version of Jason Isbell’s signature song about getting sober and the healing power of love. Following Wallen’s industry-wide rebuke last week for using a racial slur, Isbell has announced that he is donating the money he’s earned from Wallen’s recording to the NAACP.
“A portion of this money goes to me, since I wrote ‘Cover Me Up,'” Isbell tweeted on Wednesday. “I’ve decided to donate everything I’ve made so far from [Wallen’s] album to the Nashville chapter of the NAACP. Thanks for helping out a good cause, folks.”
Isbell’s decision to donate his share of royalties from Dangerous comes a week after TMZ published a video of Wallen uttering the “n-word” in front of his home in Nashville. Isbell himself blasted the country star for his actions, tweeting, “Wallen’s behavior is disgusting and horrifying. I think this is an opportunity for the country music industry to give that spot to somebody who deserves it, and there are lots of black artists who deserve it.”
Wallen’s songs were quickly dropped from radio programming and removed from streaming-service playlists, but his sales soared in the days since the incident. Album sales increased by 1,220 percent last Wednesday compared to Tuesday, while his song sales were up 327 percent, according to Alpha Data, the data analytics provider that powers the Rolling Stone Charts.
Wallen first released his version of “Cover Me Up,” a powerful ballad from Isbell’s 2013 album Southeastern, in 2018. After the song became a surprise fan-favorite for Wallen, he included a version on the 30-track Dangerous, released in January.
The world is a year into this global pandemic, but there are many, many, many people that still need a reminder that wearing a face mask can help stop the spread the Covid-19. WarnerMedia has teamed up with the Ad Council and CDC for a PSA that serves as a friendly reminder for Americans to “Mask Up” with the help of some of the most iconic characters in cinematic history.
In the new TV and digital video spot that will air across the WarnerMedia ecosystem, we see moments in Austin Powers in Goldmember, Casablanca, Creed, Birds of Prey, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, IT, The Joker, Justice League, The Lord of The Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Matrix, Mad Max: Fury Road and Wonder Woman re-imagined with characters wearing face masks. The PSA was was made pro-bono by WarnerMedia Studios’ in-house creative agency 10th Street Productions as part of the Ad Council’s larger “Mask Up America” initiative. The spot will also air in donated media time and space throughout the country.
As Covid-19 continues to surge throughout the country, the number of Americans wearing a mask outside their home on a consistent basis has leveled off in the past few months to about three-quarters (according to the Axios-Ipsos survey). According to projections by IMHE as of January 27, if 95% of all Americans wore a mask, nearly 22,000 lives could be saved by May 2021. As the vaccines rolls out over the coming months, the need for mask usage continues to remain critical in order to help stop the spread of the virus; however, mask usage is projected to decline in the Spring months.
“WarnerMedia is proud to help educate and inform our fans about the importance of mask wearing during this pandemic,” said Dennis Williams, SVP, Corporate Social Responsibility, WarnerMedia. “Wearing a mask is an effective way to protect ourselves and our loved ones from COVID-19. We hope that by seeing some of our favorite heroes and characters masked up, our fans will follow suit. Mask wearing is a simple step we all can take to show up and support our communities during this difficult time.”
"The more people in society who get vaccinated, the more chance there is of eradicating the national COVID pandemic," the 73-year-old Grammy winner said in the clip. "It's really important to know that the vaccines have all been through and met the necessary safety and quality standards."
A voice off-camera then directs John to pretend he's getting the vaccine before he burst into song, singing a bit of his 1983 hit "I'm Still Standing."
The off-camera voice, seemingly unimpressed with John's acting skills, tells him, "We'll let you know," to which the artist angrily replies, "Well, at this short notice you won't find anyone bigger."
The scene then switches to Caine, who assures people that he just received the vaccine and "it didn't hurt."
Bruce Springsteen is facing a drunken driving charge in New Jersey. Springsteen was arrested November 14 in a part of the Gateway National Recreation Area on the New Jersey coast, a spokesperson for the National Park Service confirmed Wednesday.
The park is on a narrow, beach-ringed peninsula, with views across a bay to New York City. It is about 15 miles north of Asbury Park, where Springsteen got his start as a musician and bandleader and which was later made famous with his debut album, "Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J." Springsteen lives in Colts Neck, about 12 miles from the site of the arrest.
Springsteen received citations for driving while under the influence, reckless driving and consuming alcohol in a closed area. The spokesperson said Springsteen was cooperative.
The news of the arrest came on the heels of two high-profile appearances by Springsteen. On January 20, Springsteen performed as part of President Biden's inauguration, singing "Land of Hope and Dreams" in front of the Lincoln Memorial. During Sunday's Super Bowl, he appeared in a Jeep ad filmed in Kansas urging people to find common ground.
Jeep released a statement saying it "would be inappropriate for us to comment on the details of a matter we have only read about and we cannot substantiate." But the company said "it's also right that we pause our Big Game commercial until the actual facts can be established."
Ancient Graves and Mysterious Enclosure Discovered
Stonehenge
Archaeological work ahead of the construction of a controversial road tunnel beside Stonehenge has led to the discovery of ancient graves, including one with the remains of a baby dating back more than 4,500 years; a strange earth enclosure; and prehistoric pottery, among other buried treasures.
Some of the finds may have been used by people who built the mysterious Neolithic monument, and all of the discoveries show that the region was inhabited by different ancient peoples for thousands of years.
Before breaking ground on the $2.4 billion project to move a nearby highway underground, U.K. authorities have tasked Wessex Archaeology with making a thorough investigation of the land above it. To do this, archaeologists walked the fields and created trenches and pits to test for archaeological remains and artifacts along the 2-mile-long (3 kilometers) strip where the road tunnel is planned, Leivers said in an email. The team was guided by surveys from the air and used geophysical survey equipment to look for land disturbed by digging and structures in the distant past.
Foremost among the latest finds are several graves, unearthed just to the southwest of the Stonehenge circle, that are thought to be from the Beaker culture, which is named after their practice of burying the dead with bell-shaped pottery drinking vessels. The Beaker people lived in Western Europe between 4,800 and 3,800 years ago, beginning in the Chalcolithic period when the first copper tools came into use. In one of the graves., the researchers found a simple pot alongside the remains of a baby, though only the ear bones remain. Another pit nearby contains the remains of a woman who died in her 20s, her body crouched around a relatively ornate pot or beaker. The research team also found a fragment of a copper awl or needle and a mysterious cylindrical shale object, perhaps part of a staff or club, in her grave.
The preliminary investigations have also unearthed ditches to the southeast of the monument that could be part of an Iron Age fort known locally as "Vespasian’s Camp" — named after the Roman general, later emperor, who led a military force in the area during the Roman invasion of Britain after A.D. 43. Even so, there’s no evidence the fort had anything to do with him.
A large conch shell overlooked in a museum for decades is now thought to be the oldest known seashell instrument — and it still works, producing a deep, plaintive bleat, like a foghorn from the distant past.
The shell was found during the 1931 excavation of a cave with prehistoric wall paintings in the French Pyrenees and assumed to be a ceremonial drinking cup. Archaeologists from the University of Toulouse recently took a fresh look and determined it had been modified thousands of years ago to serve as a wind instrument. They invited a French horn player to play it.
“Hearing it for the first time, for me it was a big emotion — and a big stress,” said archaeologist Carole Fritz.
She feared that playing the 12-inch (31-centimeter) shell might damage it, but it didn’t. The horn produced clear C, C sharp and D notes.
The researchers estimate it to be around 18,000 years old. Their findings were published Wednesday in the journal Science Advances.
The world-famous medieval Bayeux Tapestry may be off-limits to visitors because of the coronavirus pandemic, but its keepers have put a digital version online so the public can enjoy its fabled cloth from the safety of home.
At nearly 70 meters (77 yards) long, users may have to be skilled at using the scroll function of their computers.
The resolution is so clear in the online panorama that you can see the fibers of each stitch when you zoom in.
The Bayeux Tapestry is thought to date to the 11th century, and depicts events leading up to the Norman conquest of England, bringing the era to life in vivid — and sometimes bloody — detail.
