8 Hilariously Nonthreatening Monsters from Japanese Folklore
… there's also a lighter side to Japanese folklore, where bumbling spirits cause only mild annoyance, actually enhance your daily life, and otherwise generally botch the whole job of haunting mankind and teaching vague moral lessons about treating your parents with respect and such. Here are our top eight most hilariously nonthreatening monsters - called Yokai - from Japanese stories: …

"This is the story of a lion that captures a mouse. The mouse, being pretty desperate at that point, promises the lion anything. It's a pretty good deal for the lion, since the mouse is only a bite at most. But the mouse proves that brains will defeat brawn in the long run. Child star Jackie Coogan was born John Leslie Coogan Jr. on October 26th, 1914, in Los Angeles, California, to a show business family where his father, John H. Coogan, was a dancer and his mother, Lillian Dolliver, had been a child star on the stage. Shortly after Jackie's birth the Coogans moved to New York and it was there that Jackie made his first real appearance in the theater, at the age of four. At age five he began touring with his family in vaudeville shows. Charlie Chaplin who had been looking for the right child to star next to him in the movie "The Kid" was impressed and knew right away he had found the perfect child when he met him.
Jackie's career and stardom were the most heavily promoted during the decade and by 1923, when he made 'Daddy', he was one of the highest paid stars in Hollywood, earning millions for the studios which hired him, including First National, Lesser, Universal, M-G-M, and for his own production company set up by his parents, called Jackie Coogan Productions and was the youngest self-made millionaire in history.
When he wanted the money that he made as a child star in the 1920s his mother and stepfather refused his request and Jackie filed suit for the approximately $4 million that he had made. Under California Law he had no rights to the money he made as a child and was eventually awarded $126,000 in 1939. The public was outraged and the California Legislature was pressured to pass the "The Child Actors Bill", also known as the "Coogan Act," which would set up a trust fund for any child actor and protect their earnings.

I think that's Jackie Coogan's Law, designed to protect minor performers
from having their wages and wealth plundered by the adults in their lives.

"The Child Actors Bill" is more commonly called, "The Coogan Act" for the (long deceased) child actor Jackie Coogan who was screwed out of his earnings in silent films, by his mother and step father.
Here's, "Little Jackie."
Here's Big Jackie, AKA 'Uncle Fester...'
PS: @Lois and DJ Useo, I had a good laugh from the "Waldo" offerings today!
DJ Useo responded:
Why, it's Jackie Coogan! I know him best from The Addams Family TV show,
which I adore, but I've seen him in lots of other stuff, and at different ages.
Frankly, I regard this law as rather toothless at this point. I'd like to see much more oversight of this area of entertainment.
Dale of Raining Diamond Springs, Norcali, replied:
The Uncle Fest…..Jackie Coogan Bill. Sock away 15% of the kid's money into a trust! He was even married to Betty Grable for a few years!

The motion picture academy says it's rescinding the Academy Awards original song nomination for "Alone Yet Not Alone" from the film of the same name after it discovered composer Bruce Broughton emailed members of the group's music branch to make them aware of his submission during the nominations voting period.
Broughton serves as a member of the music branch's executive committee and is a former governor for the academy.
Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs said Wednesday using a position within the organization to personally promote one's own Oscar submission creates the appearance of an unfair advantage.
An additional nominee will not be named. The other nominees are "Happy" from "Despicable Me 2"; "Let It Go" from "Frozen"; "The Moon Song" from "Her"; and "Ordinary Love" from "Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom."

Madonna To Introduce At Amnesty International Concert
Pussy Riot
Madonna's not done with her recent string of public appearances - she also has signed on to introduce members of Pussy Riot at Amnesty International's human rights concert in New York.
The pop singer made the announcement Wednesday morning on social media. She's been busy of late, appearing on Sunday's Grammy Awards with Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and singing with Miley Cyrus during an "MTV Unplugged" taping Tuesday.
Madonna says in a statement that she admires Maria Alyokhina and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova. They were recently released after nearly two years in jail following a conviction for hooliganism when they staged a protest in a Russian church.
The Feb. 5 Bringing Human Rights Home concert at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn also includes Imagine Dragons, Lauryn Hill, The Flaming Lips and others.
With no eleventh hour Justin Bieber boost to speak of, CNN wrapped January with its third lowest month on record among total viewers. Its average daily haul managed to slip below even sister net HLN in the key news demographic of adults 25-54.
Rankings among the trio of Fox News Channel, MSNBC and CNN otherwise remained intact, with FNC topping total day and primetime and MNSBC ranking second in both total day and the demo and in both measures -- but an interesting dark horse entered the cable news program rankings in January.
CNBC, ever a distant fifth in the cable news wars, started airing off-net repeats of ABC hit Shark Tank on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. Those reruns averaged 276,000 viewers in the advertiser-friendly adults 25-54. That was enough to make Shark Tank the No. 6 program across all of cable news for the month, topping everything on CNN and, with the exception of The Rachel Maddow Show, MSNBC.
The O'Reilly Factor, The Five, The Kelly File, Special Report With Bret Baier and Maddow were the five shows that managed to outperform Shark Tank. Among total viewers, Shark Tank ranked a distant No. 21 with 541,000-- with FNC now sweeping the top 14 for a full year and MSNBC's primetime players all outranking the reality show. Shark Tank pulled in more viewers than any CNN show.

The lesbian daughter of a Hong Kong tycoon, who offered more than $100 million to find her a male suitor, has issued a heartfelt open letter urging him to accept her sexuality.
In the letter, which starts "Dear Daddy", socialite Gigi Chao asked her father Cecil to treat her partner Sean Eav as "a normal, dignified human being" -- the pair have been together for nine years and are reported to have married in 2012 in France.
"I know it's difficult for you to understand how I could feel romantically attracted to a woman; I suppose I can't really explain it either. It just happens, peacefully and gently," she wrote in the letter, which was published in the South China Morning Post on Wednesday and circulated to other Hong Kong media.
Her plea came after property developer Chao, 77, who refuses to recognise that she is a lesbian, was reported last week to have doubled the "marriage bounty" on his daughter to HK$1 billion ($130 million), after an initial offer of HK$500 million two years ago.
Chao, who owns publicly listed property developer Cheuk Nang, is a fixture of Hong Kong high society and regularly appears at public events with his latest young girlfriend. He reportedly once claimed to have slept with 10,000 women.
Dan Evans, a former journalist at Rupert Murdoch's News of the World newspaper, alleged in court Wednesday that knowledge of phone-hacking was widespread at the tabloid, and that a "very wide conspiracy" existed.
Evans was speaking as a witness at the trial of several former employees of News Corp's U.K. newspaper division.
When asked about how many people at the News of the World knew about the use of phone hacking by the paper, Evans claimed it was discussed at daily editorial meetings, although he didn't attend those meetings himself.
"As far as I was concerned it was so widely known, and so extensively, there was a very wide conspiracy within the organization," he said.

Egyptian prosecutors Wednesday referred to trial 20 journalists working for Al-Jazeera television, including four foreigners accused of "airing false news."
The Qatar-based news channel, which has incensed Egypt's new military-installed authorities with its coverage of their crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood, said the charges are baseless and "silly."
And Amnesty International called the move a "major setback for media freedom in Egypt" designed to stifle independent news coverage.
The 16 Egyptians have been charged with belonging to a "terrorist organisation... and harming national unity and social peace," a prosecution statement said.
And two Britons, an Australian and a Dutch woman have been accused of "collaborating with the Egyptians by providing them with money, equipment, information... and airing false news aimed at informing the outside world that the country was witnessing a civil war."

Penguin-chick mortality rates have increased in recent years off the coast of Argentina - a trend scientists attribute to climate change and expect to worsen throughout the century, a new study finds.
From 1983 through 2010, researchers based at the University of Washington in Seattle monitored a colony of roughly 400,000 Magellanic penguins living halfway up the coast of Argentina on a peninsula called Punta Tombo. Each year, the researchers visited penguin nests once or twice a day from mid-September through late February to assess the overall status of the colony and the health of the chicks once they hatched in late November or early December.
The resulting data set provides one of the longest-ever records of a single penguin colony. It revealed that starvation and predation were the most common and consistent chick killers over the years, but that hypothermia was the leading cause of death during years with heavy rainstorms, which became more prevalent throughout the study period - a trend that is consistent with climate models projecting the effects of climate change in the region.
Young chicks between 9 and 23 days old were particularly vulnerable to hypothermia, as they were too young to have fully grown their waterproof plumage but already too big to seek shelter under their parents' bodies, the team reports today (Jan. 29) in the journal PLOS ONE.
It's getting harder and harder to take umbrage if someone calls you a Neanderthal.
According to two studies published on Wednesday, DNA from these pre-modern humans may play a role in the appearance of hair and skin as well as the risk of certain diseases.
Although Neanderthals became extinct 28,000 years ago in Europe, as much as one-fifth of their DNA has survived in human genomes due to interbreeding tens of thousands of years ago, one of the studies found, although any one individual has only about 2 percent of caveman DNA.
"The 2 percent of your Neanderthal DNA might be different than my 2 percent of Neanderthal DNA, and it's found at different places in the genome," said geneticist Joshua Akey, who led one of the studies. Put it all together in a study of hundreds of people, and "you can recover a substantial proportion of the Neanderthal genome."
Both studies confirmed earlier findings that the genomes of east Asians harbor more Neanderthal DNA than those of Europeans. This could be 21 percent more, according to an analysis by Akey and Benjamin Vernot, published online in the journal Science.

The Chinese zodiac has 12 animals that interact with the elements.
