Paul Krugman: Seneca, Selma, and Stonewall (New York Times)
In his speech, Obama invoked the history of struggles for equality with a remarkable triptych: Seneca (women's rights), Selma (black rights), and Stonewall (gay rights). And there has been remarkably little blowback - a sign of how much the country has changed.

David Bruce: Wise Up! Problem-Solving (Athens News)
At one Catholic school, some parents could afford to buy their children's textbooks, but other parents could not afford to buy their children's textbooks. The school therefore allowed some children to borrow the necessary textbooks, but the textbooks that had to be returned at the end of the school year had a red sticker on them. Soon, children knew what the red stickers meant and taunted the children whose books had red stickers. Sister Rosamunde solved this problem by requiring all the children to give her their textbooks, and then she placed a red sticker on every textbook.
Many other sets of lyrics, patriotic and otherwise, have been written for the last strain (trio/grandioso). Two of the most widely known such sets begin with the words "Three cheers for the red, white and blue" and "Be kind to your web-footed friends". The "web-footed friends" parody, was sung at the end of every episode of the popular 1960s TV series Sing Along with Mitch.
Be Kind to Your Web-Footed Friends
Be kind to your web-footed friends
For a duck may be somebody's mother
Be kind to your friends in the swamp
Where the weather is very, very damp [pronounced to rhyme with "swamp"]
Now, you may think that this is the end...
WELL, IT IS! [abrupt cut to closing credits]

God, my grandmother LOVED Mitch Miller (AWA Lawrence Welk and Ed Sullivan). No one was allowed to get up, leave the room or talk during his show! I, in turn, detested him (and all of the 'forbidden-to-talk' shows for that matter)!
Miller ended his show with "Stars and Stripes Forever" AKA "web-footed friends" parody, and it was sung at the end of every episode of, "Sing Along with Mitch."
To this day it makes me shudder...

PS: I have been really impressed with Aljazeera network news coverage. This morning they took a half hour to cover the election in Israel. Just straight reporting, no commentary. They covered each candidate, in which direction he wanted to see the country go, and some street interviews with the Israeli people. They interviewed a few Palestinians as well, ones who live in Israel - no comments, just listening to what the had to say.
The show is in the FOX, CNN, MSNBC style, but sans the bimbos and snarky commentators. I am watching it every morning after the kids leave instead of the mindless network fare.

Mitch Miller was a complete and total asshole hack!! Here's a quote about R&R: "Rock 'n' roll is musical baby food: it is the worship of mediocrity, brought about by a passion for conformity.
Music historian Will Friedwald wrote in his book Jazz Singing (Da Capo Press, 1996) that "Miller exemplified the worst in American pop. He first aroused the ire of intelligent listeners by trying to turn - and darn near succeeding in turning - great artists like Sinatra, Clooney, and Tony Bennett into hacks. Miller chose the worst songs and put together the worst backings imaginable - not with the hit-or-miss attitude that bad musicians traditionally used, but with insight, forethought, careful planning, and perverted brilliance."
BttbBob replied:
...a parody of Sousa's 'Stars and Stripes Forever'... I think I shall teach Maddie Muffin to sing that very thing... Yes, I believe so... a capital idea indeed. We can then spontaneously burst into a duet of it when next in the toy aisle upon seeing a duck stuffed-animal - thusly making an absolute spectacle of ourselves which is, of course, the desired affect... See, being a Grampa of a 5 year old scamp gives said codger moral license to be as goofy and absurd in public with said youngster as he damn'd well pleases...

The advocacy group backed a Change.org petition started by Will Oliver, a 20-year-old gay Eagle Scout, that calls on Nat Geo to air a disclaimer clarifying the network's views before each episode of its new series, "Are You Tougher than a Boy Scout." It debuts this spring.
"That National Geographic would brush aside countless gay teens suffering at the hands of the BSA, shrugging off injustice as just another 'point of view,' is irresponsible," GLAAD president Herndon Graddick said in a statement. "By airing this program, National Geographic is providing support and publicity to an organization that harms young people simply because of who they are. If the network is truly committed to standing by its non-discrimination practices, it should have no problem airing a disclaimer to that effect."
In a statement to GLAAD, the network said the show has "nothing to do with this debate" over the Boy Scouts' LGBT policies.
GLADD pointed to the Boy Scouts' October 2012 Progress Report of its National Council Strategic Plan 2011-2015. It cites the Nat Geo series as a "strategic partnership" aimed at promoting the idea that "scouting is 'cool' with youth."
The report states that the Scouts will begin working on marketing plans with National Geographic for "leveraging the show with Scouting audiences and audiences outside of scouting."

Street art apparently inspired by the elusive graffiti artist Banksy is being used by an unidentified artist to weigh in on the Lance Armstrong doping scandal.
A stenciled, spray-painted image of Armstrong wearing a yellow jersey and riding a bike while hooked up to an IV drip was spotted in Los Angeles earlier this week.
The Twitter feed for London's Jalouse Club posted a photo of the art along with the message: "Banksy's take on Lance Armstrong #Brilliant." But a representative for Banksy told the Huffington Post U.K. that the British artist is not behind it.

Actor-director Ron Howard, sportscaster Al Michaels, CBS chief Les Moonves, journalist Bob Schieffer and writer-producer Dick Wolf will be inducted into the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences 22nd Hall of Fame, the selection committee said Wednesday.
For the first time, proceeds from the ceremony, slated for March 11 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, will benefit the Television Academy Foundation's Archive of American Television, a collection of hundreds of video interviews with TV pioneers.
In addition to the five honorees, the Hall of Fame will posthumously induct Philo T. Farnsworth, credited with inventing all-electronic television transmission.
More than 120 individuals have been inducted into the Hall of Fame since its inception in 1984.
The imprisoned members of the Pussy Riot feminist punk band say they feel no regrets about the irreverent "punk prayer" against President Vladimir Putin in Moscow's main cathedral that landed them behind bars for two years.
Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alekhina offered a vivid, but stoic, description of their harsh prison conditions in interviews published Wednesday in the independent Novaya Gazeta newspaper. They said they don't expect clemency from authorities.
Tolokonnikova, who works at a sewing machine like most female prisoners in Russia's prison colonies, was quoted by the paper as saying she has had her fingers punctured by the needle but has picked up speed and experience and can now meet her quota of making lining for 320 jackets a day.
Like other prisoners, she bathes once a week and uses cold water to wash the rest of the week.
Tolokonnikova said she meditates to prevent her spirit from being dulled by the monotonous labor. She added that the main thing she misses at her prison colony is the ability to read freely; prison conditions leave little room for reading the Bible and philosophy books.

Teddy Turner inherited his love of sailing from his father, media magnate Ted Turner. But there is less of a family resemblance when it comes to politics.
While the elder Turner leans Democratic, Teddy Turner is running as a Republican in a crowded race for an open South Carolina congressional seat created by a U.S. Senate appointment.
"My dad asked, 'What's the minimum amount I can give because you're a Republican?'" Teddy Turner said. "My dad has been asking for years, 'How the heck did you become so conservative?'"
Teddy Turner is one of at least 10 Republicans and two Democrats running in the March 19 party primaries in this coastal district.
The former child actor who was the voice of Charlie Brown in the 1960s "Peanuts" animated television specials will be arraigned on Wednesday, after being arrested at a border crossing near San Diego on a warrant accusing him of making criminal threats and stalking, authorities said.
Peter Robbins, 56, was taken into custody on Sunday evening as he was returning to California from Mexico at the San Ysidro crossing between San Diego and Tijuana, said Ralph DeSio, spokesman for U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
He was jailed in lieu of $550,000 bail on suspicion of four counts of making criminal threats and one count of stalking, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department. Robbins, who lives in Oceanside, California, was scheduled for arraignment Wednesday afternoon.
Robbins was only 9 years old in 1965 when he became the voice of the world-weary yet optimistic title character of "A Charlie Brown Christmas," the first of many animated TV specials based on the popular "Peanuts" comic strip of Charles Schulz.
The actor went on to voice Charlie Brown in "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown," "You're In Love, Charlie Brown" and "A Boy Named Charlie Brown," all which aired in the 1960s. He was replaced in later versions of the animated specials.

A judge refused Wednesday to grant Laurence Fishburne a three-year restraining order against a convicted felon who claims he owns the actor's home.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Carol Boas Goodson said she could not consider Mark Francisco's criminal history and she did not think his conduct warranted a lengthy restraining order.
Francisco, who police say was recently paroled on a cyberstalking case, went to the actor's home on Jan. 1 and threatened to evict the family. He also left a letter at the Oscar-nominated actor's home, but the judge said there was nothing threatening about it.
The actor had been given a temporary restraining order, but Goodson said Francisco's conduct didn't warrant an extension.
The Black Keys are remaining vigilant when it comes to sound-a-like songs.
The Nashville duo is suing Pinnacle Entertainment in New York federal court. Drummer Patrick Carney and singer-guitarist Dan Auerbach say the casino owner commissioned a song that sounds like their hit "Howlin' For You" for a commercial advertising two of its Louisiana properties. They are asking a judge for an injunction and compensation.
The Keys recently settled lawsuits against Pizza Hut and Home Depot over similar charges. Terms of those settlements were not released.
The Keys are up for five trophies at next month's Grammy Awards and Auerbach also has been nominated for producer of the year.

Stung by the overwhelmingly negative reaction to removing the name of original "Saturday Night Live" cast member Gilda Radner from a cancer support group's title, a Wisconsin chapter is borrowing one of the comedian's catch phrases for its next announcement: Never mind.
Gilda's Club Madison will remain just that, group leaders told The Associated Press on Wednesday. The board voted last week to keep the name after an avalanche of criticism in November when it announced it was switching to the more generic Cancer Support Community Southwest Wisconsin, in part out of concern that young people today were unfamiliar with Radner, who died of ovarian cancer in 1989.
"It really struck a chord with folks and all of us agreed we want people to come to Gilda's and get the help that they need," said Wayne Harris, chairman of the board for the Madison chapter. "If this is what it takes to make that happen, we're all as a group happy to make it happen."
The intention of changing to a broader name was honorable, Harris said. "In retrospect, we probably should have thought that through or understood it more," he said.
Anger over the name change, which was supposed to take effect this month, came from members of the local Gilda's Club chapter, fans of Radner who saw it as a slight to a woman who confronted cancer with dignity and humor, leaders of other clubs who reaffirmed their commitment to keeping the name, as well as Radner's husband, actor Gene Wilder.
Union membership plummeted last year to the lowest level since the 1930s as cash-strapped state and local governments shed workers and unions had difficulty organizing new members in the private sector despite signs of an improving economy.
Government figures released Wednesday showed union membership declined from 11.8 percent to 11.3 percent of the workforce, another blow to a labor movement already stretched thin by battles in Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan and other states to curb bargaining rights and weaken union clout.
Overall membership fell by about 400,000 workers to 14.4 million, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. More than half the loss, about 234,000, came from government workers including teachers, firefighters and public administrators.
But unions also saw losses in the private sector even as the economy created 1.8 million new jobs in 2012. That membership rate fell from 6.9 percent to 6.6 percent, a troubling sign for the future of organized labor, as job growth generally has taken place at nonunion companies.
"To employers, it's going to look like the labor movement is ready for a knockout punch," said Gary Chaison, professor of industrial relations at Clark University in Worcester, Mass. "You can't be a movement and get smaller."

The original Mrs Robinson's diary and scandalous suggestions about a former heir to the British throne are all part of the latest ancestral revelations to go online.
British genealogical website Ancestry.co.uk said on Tuesday it has put the transcripts of thousands of Victorian divorce proceedings online, which reveal the racy details of an era that most modern Britons consider to have been dominated by imperial duty, a stiff upper lip and formal familial relations.
The UK Civil Divorce Records, 1858-1911 date from the year when the Matrimonial Causes Act removed the jurisdiction of divorce from the church and made it a civil matter.
Before this, a full divorce required intervention by Parliament, which had only granted around 300 since 1668. The records also include civil court records on separation, custody battles, legitimacy claims and nullification of marriages, according to the website.
The rarity of such cases, combined with the fact that it was wealthy, often well-known nobility involved, made the divorce proceedings huge public scandals, played out in the press as real life soap operas.
