Pee-wee's Playhouse is an American children's television program starring Paul Reubens as the childlike Pee-wee Herman. The show was developed from Reubens' popular stage show and the one-off TV special The Pee-wee Herman Show, produced for HBO, which was similar in style but featured much more adult humor.
The premise of the show was that host Pee-wee Herman went to play in a fantastic house (situated in Puppetland) known as the Playhouse, which was filled with toys, gadgets, talking furniture and appliances (e.g. Magic Screen and Chairy) and puppet characters such as Conky The Robot, Pterri the baby Pteranodon and Jambi the Genie (John Paragon), a disembodied genie's head who lives in a jeweled box. The Playhouse was also visited by a regular cast of human characters, including Miss Yvonne (Lynne Marie Stewart), Reba The Mail Lady (S. Epatha Merkerson), Captain Carl (Phil Hartman), Cowboy Curtis (Laurence Fishburne) and a small group of children, The Playhouse Gang.

PS: I was out shoveling shortly after 5 AM today. It was about a foot of light, powdery snow, but really cold out there. I actually wore gloves, but the fingers were still freezing as I shoveled. It was so delightful, all that cold, crisp air despite the old hands...

African literary light Binyavanga Wainaina says he's known he was gay since he was 5 though he did not have a homosexual encounter until he was 39.
To celebrate his 43rd birthday, the prize-winning Kenyan has published an online essay telling the world that he is gay. His story contributes to an increasingly fierce debate about gays in Africa and is a protest against laws that seek to further criminalize homosexuality.
It is illegal to have gay sex in most African countries. Gays in many parts of the continent face severe harassment, physical threats and judicial punishment. Kenya has a law banning sodomy. Uganda, a neighbor to the west, recently passed legislation that calls for life in prison for some gay acts.
Wainaina's essay, painful to read, this week announced what he wishes he had told his mother before she died 14 years ago: "I am a homosexual, mum."
Dennis Nzioka, a gay right activist in Kenya, welcomed Wainaina's public announcement and said his prominence may influence other gay people in Africa and Kenya to come out publicly - particularly the older professionals who have been living a double life.
He said the reaction of most people was negative and is symptomatic to the homophobia that exists in Kenya.

After the script to his latest pic "The Hateful Eight" leaked early, Quentin Tarantino has decided to not make his next directing assignment.
In the Deadline report, Tarantino says, ""I'm very, very depressed. I finished a script, a first draft, and I didn't mean to shoot it until next winter, a year from now. I gave it to six people, and apparently it's gotten out today."
Tarantino is considering meeting with publishers in order to have the script turned into a novel.
"I'm going to publish it, and that's it for now," Tarantino said. "I give it out to six people and if I can't trust them to that degree, then I have no desire to make it. I'll publish it. I'm done. I'll move on to the next thing. I've got ten more where that came from."
Everybody likes a good mystery. So when a user of popular message board Ask MetaFilter named JannaK asked for help in decoding a seemingly nonsensical note written by the poster's late grandmother, others were more than happy to assist.

My grandmother passed away in 1994 of a fast-spreading cancer. She was non-communicative her last two weeks, but in that time, she left at least 20 index cards with scribbled letters on them. My cousins and I were between 8-10 years old at the time, and believed she was leaving us a code. We puzzled over them for a few months trying substitution ciphers, and didn't get anywhere.
My father found one of the cards the other day and I love puzzles and want to tackle the mystery again. Based on some of the repeating segments (many lines start with PST, many end with PAGA, and TYAGF repeats often at the end), I'm thinking they may be song lyrics. She inserts lots of backwards commas, and strange breaks at various points that could indicate stanzas. The back of the card has two numbered lines that contain the same letters.

Word leaked in November that CNBC vet Maria Bartiromo would be leaving the NBCU-owned biz news cabler after a 20-year stint, and that the journo was eying Fox Business Network as her next home.
Today, that news became official, as Fox Business Network announced that it has signed Bartiromo to a multi-year deal that will make her Global Markets Editor. Under the pact, Bartiromo will anchor a daily market hours program for FBN and a Sunday biz-focused show on Fox News. Bartiromo joins the Fox family on Feb. 1, and her programs will launch before the end of first quarter.
"I tapped Maria to report live from the floor of the New York Stock Exchange while at CNBC, and I am delighted to have her join me once again alongside our star lineup at Fox Business," said Roger Ailes, CEO and chairman of Fox News.
During her tenure at CNBC, Bartiromo hosted shows including "Closing Bell with Maria Bartiromo" and "On the Money with Maria Bartiromo." In 1995, she was the first journo to report live from the floor of the New York Stock Exchange on a daily basis.
Japanese fishermen have finished killing about 40 dolphins targeted for their meat as part of a larger group trapped recently in what activists say was the biggest roundup they have witnessed in the last four annual hunts.
Sea Shepherd, best known for its anti-whaling activities, said that of roughly 250 captured dolphins, the fishermen first selected 52 to keep alive for sale to aquariums and other customers. They included a rare albino calf and its mother.
Of the rest, about 40 were killed, one became stuck in a net and drowned, and the others were released, it said.
While other dolphins have been killed since the hunting season began in September, Sea Shepherd said the 250 herded into the cove last Friday was the largest group it has seen since it began monitoring the hunt.

It seems that every year, despite warnings from security experts, we see people getting their account hacked or taken over because of easy-to-crack passwords. Just like setting the PIN number on your debit card to "0000" is a terrible idea, so is using an easy, largely impersonal password.
Security firm
SplashData has released its annual list of the worst passwords to have, based on them being the most popularly-used passwords. The firm takes stolen passwords that have been posted online over the course of the year, and assembles a list of the 25 most frequently appearing passwords.
This year's results are somewhat skewed, PC World explains, on account of the massive data breach of Adobe login information in October 2013. The rise in popularity of "123456," this year's new most-common password, could be at least somewhat attributed to almost 100 million of the Adobe accounts being test accounts or inactive, which may skew its frequency of use.
Interesting omissions from this year's list include some perennial favourites including "dragon," "ashley" and "baseball," while other passwords, like "jesus," "ninja" and "welcome" all spent only a single year on the list before dropping off the top 25 again.

The volcanic peak, normally blanketed in snow this time of year, has almost no snow cover on the south, west and eastern slopes. Snow cover has decreased dramatically since November, when the mountaintop looked mostly white, NASA's Earth Observatory reported.
Normally, snow cover peaks around April 1, and by the first of the year, 15 to 30 percent of that snow has already accumulated.
The volcanic slopes are a popular destination for skiers and other winter sports enthusiasts. But this year, with just 2 to 3 inches (5 to 7.5 centimeters) of the white stuff on the ground, most ski lifts were closed on Jan. 16, according to the Earth Observatory. Die-hard skiers had to hike up a few glaciers to get their fix.

Wanda the wombat is part of the Adelaide Conservation Ark program. The "Wombat Wranglers" team at the zoo seeks to provide researchers with a better understanding of the species, which spends the majority of the day living underground.
Wanda's physical condition deteriorated recently, forcing her to rely on one leg for movement. This is reportedly the first time a hip replacement surgery has been performed on an animal like this.
