• Monica Lera, a former member of the Opera House Ballet, remembers a time when she and other dancers played children in Act II in La Bohème and were required to carry food onto the stage. Because the food was real, tasty, and free, and because the dancers were living on low wages, they nibbled on the food before bringing it in, reasoning that no one in the audience could see that a bite or two had been taken out of a slice of ham or a cream cake. Of course, the singers on stage did notice, and in a low voice would joke to the dancers: “The rats have been at this. I shall complain to the management.”
• Mrs. Haskell, the mother of ballet critic Arnold Haskell, enjoyed watching ballet practice at the London dance studio of Princess Seraphine Astafieva. Often she rewarded dancers with boxes of chocolates. Because young dance student Patrick Healey-Kay, who later became world famous as Anton Dolin, knew that Mrs. Haskell enjoyed watching the circle of pirouettes with which Ms. Astafieva’s students ended the class, he sometimes asked Mrs. Haskell what she would give him if he danced two circles of pirouettes instead of just one. In that way, he was able to earn many boxes of chocolates.
• While on tour, Merce Cunningham and his dance troupe stopped at the Brownsville Eat-All-You-Want Restaurant, where they wolfed down food in huge quantities. (Dancer Steve Paxton ate five pieces of pie for dessert!) Mr. Cunningham asked the cashier how the restaurant managed to stay open, and she replied, “Most people don’t eat as much as you people.” On another tour, they stopped at a restaurant that advertised homemade pies. Before the dance troupe left the restaurant, they heard the servers tell the regular pie-eating customers, “I’m sorry — we don’t have any more.”
• Mikhail Mordkin was jealous of the great success enjoyed by his dance partner, Anna Pavlova, who even had food named after her. While the two were preparing to order supper at a restaurant, Mr. Mordkin glanced at the menu, then he grew angry. He showed the menu to Ms. Pavlova and said, “There you are! Now you see! Frog’s legs à la Pavlova! Always it is yourself! Never of Mordkin you think, but always Pavlova, Pavlova, Pavlova! Frog’s legs à la Pavlova! But where is there frog’s legs à la Mordkin? Where is there anything eatable à la Mordkin? Tell me that!”
• As a young child growing up in Ufa, the great dancer Rudolf Nureyev was frequently hungry. When he started kindergarten, he was always late to class each morning, and his teacher asked him why. Young Rudi explained that he had to eat at home. His teacher then reminded him that he could eat at school. What young Rudi didn’t explain was that now he had a chance to eat twice in the morning, he was not going to miss it — especially since he could not be sure that food would be available at home in the evening. (One day in class, he actually fainted from hunger.)
• Alexandra Danilova lived in Russia after the revolution, so she suffered from food shortages for many years. After leaving Russia and going to Germany, where she danced for the Ballet Russe, she feasted on the food there. One day, she was supposed to rehearse with Anton Dolin, but he looked at her and then told her that he was a dancer and not a piano mover. After that — and after being told by the company that she was not allowed to dance until she lost weight — Ms. Danilova slimmed down.
• As you would expect, surrealist Salvador Dali had some very original ideas for ballets choreographed by Léonide Massine. For a scene in which Theseus kills the Minotaur, Mr. Dali wanted to use a real calf’s head from which the dancers would cut pieces of meat and eat them. Mr. Dali and Mr. Massine went to several restaurants to see if they could get a calf’s head, but the best the waiters could do for them was to offer them a veal sandwich.
Annette Funicello was an original Mouseketeer, had a hit with "Pineapple Princess", and popularized "Beach Party" movies. Later, she became the spokesmom for what brand of peanut butter?
Released in 1980, this song by Kool & the Gang was their first and only single to reach number one on the US Billboard Hot 100. Moving at a tempo of 123 beats per minute, what is the title of this song?
"Celebration" is a song released in 1980 by Kool & the Gang from their album Celebrate!. It was the band's first and only single to reach number one on the US Billboard Hot 100.
"Celebration" is in the key of A flat in common time and was written as a collaboration by the whole band. The song moves at a tempo of 123 beats per minute.
"Celebration" reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart on February 7, 1981, and held that position for two weeks before being ousted by Dolly Parton's "9 to 5". It remains the band's only No. 1 hit.
By late 1980, the song had also reached No. 1 on both the Billboard Dance and R&B charts. The song was featured heavily on the radio throughout the year and is still heard today at weddings and parties, and is a popular anthem for sporting events. It was commonly played by radio stations in honor of the release of US hostages from captivity in Iran. It was also an international hit, reaching No. 7 in the United Kingdom on November 29, 1980, spending 13 weeks in the chart.

No Hail to the Chief as Predator got on AF1 for the last time--the music Orange Ass departed to was YMCA--appropriate since his last lying remarks were yet another please-love-me rally played in front of a small gathering of mostly family. So pathetic. Small small small petty excuse for a human.
It could only have been more appropriate if he had had toilet paper stuck to his shoe again.

In the wake of delivering her breathtaking, emotional poem “The Hill We Climb” at the inauguration of President Joe Biden, 22-year-old poet Amanda Gorman is seeing not only an explosion in her social media following, but her two books — Change Sings and The Hill We Climb — already hold the No. 1 and No. 2 spots on Amazon’s bestseller list. And the books don’t hit shelves until September.
Gorman’s upcoming books even out-pegged A Promised Land by President Barack Obama (currently in the No. 5 spot), who also became an instant fan of the young Angeleno’s words today. She is the youngest inaugural poet in U.S. history.
Gorman’s Change Sings: A Children’s Anthem follows a young girl who leads a cast of characters on a musical journey. They learn that they have the power to make changes — big or small — in the world, in their communities and, most importantly, in themselves. The booked is billed as “a triumphant call to action for everyone to use their abilities to make a difference.”
While the dais at the U.S. Capitol was jam-packed with stars like Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez and Garth Brooks performing and former U.S. Commanders-in-Chief Bill Clinton and George W. Bush joining Obama in attendance, Gorman stole the spotlight with a poem so electric that its spirituality soothed the deep wounds of those burned by the 45th president, Donald Trump, whose inflammatory rhetoric only spurred division.
Gorman follows in the footsteps of such inaugural poets as Robert Frost, Maya Angelou, Miller Williams, Elizabeth Alexander and Richard Blanco. The poet, who described her background as a “skinny Black girl, descended from slaves and raised by a single mother” who can dream of being president one day, “only to find herself reciting for one,” delivered an anthem of hope, especially at a time when America has suffered from a hundred-year pandemic, political violence and division.
U.S. Capitol Police Officer Eugene Goodman escorted incoming Vice President Kamala Harris to Wednesday’s presidential inauguration, receiving his own ovation when he descended the stairs of the Capitol.
CBS News was first to report that Goodman, who served as an infantryman in Iraq, is the new acting deputy House sergeant at arms. He is credited with leading a mob of protesters away from the Senate chambers during the Jan. 6 siege of the Capitol, in which five people died, including a Capitol police officer. Another police officer died by suicide days later.
Goodman left the Army in 2006 after serving four years as an infantryman, Lt. Col. Gabriel Ramirez, a service spokesman, told Military.com on Jan. 13.
Last week, three House members introduced legislation recommending the Congressional Gold Medal for Goodman, whose actions were captured on video. Shot by Igor Bobic, a HuffPost politics reporter, the now viral video shows Goodman attempting to hold back the crowd before luring them away from the unprotected Senate chamber.
Earlier this month, Arnold Schwarzenegger unsheathed his Conan The Barbarian sword to deliver a surprisingly affecting message about the Capitol riots. Today, presumably after celebrating the the inauguration of Joe Biden, the actor and former governor is again referencing his past hits to help boost confidence in the COVID-19 vaccine.
“Put that needle down!” he cracks after receiving the shot, referencing one of his many iconic Kindergarten Cop lines. He gamely chases it with a nod to perhaps his most famous role. “Alright, I just got my vaccine and I will recommend it to anyone and everyone,” he says to the camera before channeling T-800. “Come with me if you want to live.”
We can only hope this prompts our other aging action stars to drop vaccine videos of their own. “Go ahead,” Clint Eastwood can say as he rolls up his sleeve. “Make my day.” Al Pacino can introduce his “little friend” while holding the syringe. And Bruce Willis? A celebratory “yippee-ki-yay” will most assuredly be warranted after the shot. He just better wear a mask.
Alex Trebek's last week as host of Jeopardy! drew the game show's biggest ratings in eight-plus months, and his last episode gathered the largest audience in more than a year and a half.
The longtime host, who died on Nov. 8, had taped his final episodes in late October. The syndicated game show ran those episodes the week of Jan. 4.
The show averaged 11.12 million daily viewers for the week, its largest weekly tally since late April. Jeopardy! topped its closest competitor in syndication, Wheel of Fortune, by about 840,000 viewers, and led every primetime program (excluding sports) for the week as well.
In household ratings, a key measure for syndicated shows, the 6.6 for Jeopardy! was also a season high, 0.6 ahead of Wheel of Fortune.
Trebek's last episode on Jan. 8 brought in 14 million viewers, the most for any Jeopardy! since June 3, 2019 — the final episode of James Holzhauer's 32-game winning streak.
Donald Trump (R-Lock Him Up), in one of his final acts as president, released current and former members of his administration from the terms of their ethics pledge, a move that once again laid bare his failure to fulfil his 2016 campaign promise to “drain the swamp.”
Trump won the presidency, in part, on a pledge to take on entrenched special interests in Washington, and his ethics policy was one of his first acts after assuming office.
But in practice it proved to be little more than bluster. Trump instituted a major loosening of ethics standards when compared with the administration of his predecessor, Barack Obama, as well as the rules that will govern President Joe Biden’s White House.
While Trump’s policy ostensibly included a five-year ban on former officials lobbying their former agencies, it also had large loopholes that allowed many to skirt the rules. The administration also avoided enforcing it, government watchdog groups say.
Unlike his predecessors, Trump refused to divest from his sprawling business empire. That set the tone for his tenure, while making it easy for foreign and domestic interests to try to influence U.S. policy by patronizing his hotels, restaurants, golf courses and private clubs.
A pair of endangered Mexican gray wolves and their seven pups have been sent from a zoo in New Mexico's largest city to Mexico as part of conservation efforts in that country.
Officials at the ABQ BioPark in Albuquerque confirmed Tuesday that the wolves were loaded up in separate crates and trucked south last week. The pack of predators will eventually be released into the wild after they learn to hunt and survive on their own.
The zoo is among others in the United States that have partnered with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for decades on Mexican gray wolf breeding and recovery efforts. Several wolves born at the zoo have been released into the wild over the years, but this marks its first international pack release.
“We’re excited and sad at the same time,” Erin Flynn, ABQ BioPark mammal curator, said in a statement. “It’s a zoo’s dream to directly help a wild population like this. It’s even more powerful and touching for us that it's our beloved lobo that we’re helping.”
More Mexican wolves are in the wild now than at any time since they were nearly exterminated decades ago. At least 163 wolves were counted during last year's survey in southeastern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico, marking a nearly 25% jump in the population from the previous year. There are an estimated 30 wolves in the wild in Mexico's Sierra Madre Occidental.
Some 21 bricks of cocaine hidden in banana shipments ended up at grocery shops in Canada following a bungled drug-trafficking operation, authorities have confirmed.
A local store owner in Kelowna, a small town in Central Okanagan, British Columbia province, alerted authorities after finding 12 packages of what appeared to be cocaine among a banana shipment on 24 February 2019.
The packages were seized by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) for further investigation into their origins and intended destination.
Later that day, a second grocery shop owner contacted RCMP saying they had also discovered what they believed was a haul of the Class-A drug.
Investigators said the cocaine had come from Columbia and ended up in Kelowna as a result of a failed drug deal.
When exposed to catnip or silver vine, cats engage in some fairly predictable behaviors, such as licking and chewing the leaves, rubbing their heads and faces against the plants, and rolling on the ground. Cats get a real kick out of these plants, but surprising new research points to a more practical purpose than just wanting to get high.
Nepetalactol—the most potent active ingredient in catnip (Nepeta cataria) and silver vine (Actinidia polygama)—provides cats with a chemical defense against mosquitoes, according to new research published in Science Advances. The discovery could explain why felines, whether domesticated cats or hulking jungle predators, display similar behaviors after being exposed to these plants.
The new research, led by Masao Miyazaki from Iwate University in Japan, offers fresh insights into nepetalactol and how it affects feline behavior and their opioid receptors. That nepetalactol deters mosquitoes is a stunning revelation, and it could result in an entirely new class of insect repellent, according to the researchers. Nepetalactol had previously been associated with mosquito repellent activity, but “our data is the first to show it,” explained Miyazaki in an email.
What’s more, the new paper is the “first to show that nepetalactol is a potent bioactive compound to cats.” Indeed, it’s no secret that the chemical has some kind of neurological effect on cats, but catnip, a plant from the mint family, and silver vine, a kind of kiwifruit, contain a plethora of other bioactive compounds, such as isoiridomyrmecin, iridomyrmecin, isodihydronepetalactone, and dihydronepetalactone. Miyazaki and his colleagues, including researchers from Nagoya University in Japan and the University of Liverpool in the U.K., focused on nepetalactol because of its suspected potency.
To learn more, the team studied a bunch of different felines, including 25 lab cats, 30 feral cats, and several captive big cats, including leopards, jaguars, and lynx. They documented the cats’ reactions to filter paper laced with nepetalactol. All the cats exhibited the classic behavioral response. Dogs and mice exposed to the chemical exhibited no response.
