Egypt, officially the Arab Republic of Egypt, is a transcontinental country spanning the northeast corner of Africa and southwest corner of Asia by a land bridge formed by the Sinai Peninsula. Egypt is a Mediterranean country bordered by the Gaza Strip and Israel to the northeast, the Gulf of Aqaba to the east, the Red Sea to the east and south, Sudan to the south, and Libya to the west. Across the Gulf of Aqaba lies Jordan, and across from the Sinai Peninsula lies Saudi Arabia, although Jordan and Saudi Arabia do not share a land border with Egypt. It is the world's only contiguous Afrasian nation.
With over 92 million inhabitants, Egypt is the most populous country in North Africa and the Arab world, the third-most populous in Africa (after Nigeria and Ethiopia), and the fifteenth-most populous in the world.

Paul McCartney says he wants his music to get back to where it once belonged.
McCartney filed a lawsuit in federal court in Manhattan on Wednesday against Sony/ATV over copyright ownership of the many hit songs he wrote with John Lennon as part of The Beatles.
The copyrights were bought by Michael Jackson and then sold to Sony/ATV following his death. McCartney has long wanted the copyrights, and the filing says he has sent notice to Sony/ATV that he will claim them back under a provision of U.S. copyright law that makes that possible after a certain time, starting in 2018.
McCartney wants a ruling to say his claiming them doesn't represent a legal breach that Sony/ATV could use against him.
Sony says the lawsuit is "unnecessary and premature."

Patrick Stewart is joining Sony Pictures Animation's The Emoji Movie as Poop.
The Emoji Movie follows Gene (T.J. Miller), an emoji born with multiple expressions, who teams up with the notorious code-breaker Jailbreak (Ilana Glazer) on an adventure through a teenager's phone.
Other new voices in the feature are Jennifer Coolidge as Gene's mother, Mary Meh, and SNL grad Maya Rudolph as Smiler. Jake T. Austin will be playing Emoji's resident teen, Alex. They are joining previously announced stars James Corden, Steven Wright, and Rob Riggle.
The new castings were announced as part of SPA's upcoming features presentation on Wednesday morning.
It's obviously not meant to be a hit," Seger told Rolling Stone. "There's no chorus per se or title section or anything. The idea was just to honor his memory and talk, very specifically, about my impression of him in 1966 when we first met."
"Glenn Song" is a poignant ballad that reminisces about the pair's decades-spanning friendship, with such lyrics as, "You were strong/ You were sharp/ But you had the deepest heart." Frey and Seger grew up in Detroit and ran in the same circles on the local rock scene during the mid-1960s.
Seger's first nationwide hit, "Ramblin' Gamblin' Man," released in 1969, featured Frey on background vocals.
Frey died on Jan. 18, 2016, and Seger later sang "Heartache Tonight" -- which he co-wrote for the Eagles in 1979 -- at Frey's memorial ceremony.

The number of abortions performed in the United States has fallen to the lowest rate since 1974, the year after the Supreme Court legalized the practice in the historic 1973 Roe v. Wade decision, according to a new study.
The report comes from the Guttmacher Institute, which researches sexual and reproductive health-related policy. Researchers there found that only 14.6 of every 1,000 women between the ages of 15 and 44 had abortions in 2014, marking a drop to half of the peak rate seen in the early 1980s. The total number of abortions performed in 2014 hovered around 926,000, showing a gradual, yet consistent, downward trend over the past two decades.
But as the legal debate surrounding abortion and various restrictions to the procedure remain across the country, it's unclear if the numbers are falling following better access to birth control and sex education programs, or because of cuts in access to clinics and doctors. To those on either side of the aisle conclusion can be drawn differently. For pro-life advocates, the numbers could mean that their efforts to curtail abortion practices have been effective, but for those on the pro-choice side of women's health workers, the data could show the benefits in providing expanded contraceptive access and education to young women.
As abortion rates have dropped and birth rates remain stable, researchers are leaning toward the latter theory to explain the trend. In recent years, the teenage pregnancy and unintended pregnancy rates have dropped, possibly because of provisions in the 2010 Affordable Care Act (ACA) signed into effect by President Obama. The health care legislation included a measure that grants women increased access to birth control by removing copays from prescriptions and IUDs, which are a long-term, highly effective form of contraception.
The data also confounds the idea that tighter restrictions are the answer to cutting back on abortions; researchers found 60 percent of the decline in procedures occurred in states that had not enacted any new legislation seeking to curtail abortion access.

Caroline Kennedy stepped down Wednesday after three years as U.S. ambassador to Japan, where she was welcomed like a celebrity and worked to deepen the U.S.-Japan relationship despite regular flare-ups over American military bases on the southern island of Okinawa.
Appointed by President Barack Obama in 2013, she had been expected to leave with the coming change in U.S. leadership. President-elect Donald Trump's transition team has also said that all envoys who were political appointees must step down by Inauguration Day on Friday. Trump has not named a new ambassador yet.
Kennedy ruffled some feathers early in her tenure by tweeting her opposition to Japan's dolphin hunt, shortly after her embassy issued a statement expressing "disappointment" that Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe had visited a shrine that memorializes World War II war criminals, among others.
During her time, though, the conservative Abe and liberal Obama found common ground despite coming from opposite ends of the political spectrum.
"She has great skills and authority as a convener, a much needed function in U.S.-Japan relations," said Kent Calder, the director of the Reischauer Center for East Asian Studies at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies in Washington, D.C. "She has been more of a network builder than a concrete policy initiator, but that is almost an inevitable role for ambassadors these days."
Merrick Garland, the judge nominated by President Barack Obama to the U.S. Supreme Court, made his return to the courtroom on Wednesday to hear cases as a federal appeals court judge, not a Supreme Court justice.
Garland, the chief judge of the District of Columbia Circuit, stopped hearing cases in March after he was nominated to fill the seat of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, who died in February. But after Republicans blocked his confirmation, it was announced in mid-December that he'd again begin hearing federal appeals court cases.
President-elect Donald Trump (R-Pendejo) is now expected to announce his own nomination to the court within the two weeks of his inauguration on Friday.
There was no mention during nearly three hours of argument on Wednesday that it was Garland's first day back on the bench in 11 months.

Donald Trump (R-Grifter) says a pair of polls that show he is set to take office as the most unpopular newly elected president in at least 40 years are "phony" and "rigged."
According to a new ABC News/Washington Post survey released Tuesday, just 40 percent of Americans view Trump favorably, compared to the 79 percent who viewed Barack Obama favorably when he took office in 2009.
Trump trails each of his six predecessors - Jimmy Carter (78 percent), Ronald Reagan (58 percent), George H.W. Bush (65 percent), Bill Clinton (68 percent), George W. Bush (62 percent) and Obama (79 percent) - in terms of favorability. And Trump is the only president-elect of the last seven to be viewed unfavorably by a majority of Americans, with 54 percent currently holding that view.
Trump's approval rating is also well below the 61 percent for George W. Bush in 2001 and 67 percent who approved of Clinton in 1993.
According to the ABC News/Washington Post poll, just 40 percent of Americans approve of the way Trump has handled the transition - exactly half of the 80 percent who approved of the way Barack Obama handled his in 2009.
