Mark Morford: Velveeta at the End of the World (SF Gate)
Do you know what this means? This means, of course, that millions of deteriorating Americans are more desperate than ever to ignore the fundamentals of reality and instead pour large, simmering buckets of revolting liquid cheese straight into their self-hating colons.

Thomas, 37, died five days after a violent confrontation with six officers in July 2011. A surveillance camera at the busy transit center where the incident unfolded captured him screaming for his father again and again and begging for air as the police kneed him, jolted him with an electric stun gun and used the blunt end to strike him around the face and head.

AA Gill on Autobiography by Morrissey in the Sunday Time: "This is a book that cries out like one of his maudlin ditties to be edited. But were an editor to start, there would be no stopping. It is a heavy tome, devoid of insight, warmth, wisdom or likeability. It is a potential firelighter of vanity, self-pity and logorrhoeic dullness. Putting it in Penguin Classics doesn't diminish Aristotle or Homer or Tolstoy; it just roundly mocks Morrissey, and this is a humiliation constructed by the self-regard of its victim."
Tom Terrific was an early animated series on American television, presented as part of the Captain Kangaroo children's television show.
Drawn in a simple style, it featured a gee-whiz boy hero, Tom Terrific, who lived in a treehouse and could transform himself into anything he wanted thanks to his magic, funnel-shaped "thinking cap," which also enhanced his intelligence. He had a comic lazybones of a sidekick, Mighty Manfred the Wonder Dog, and an arch-foe named Crabby Appleton, whose motto was, "I'm rotten to the core!" Other foes included Mr. Instant, the Instant Thing King, Captain Kidney Bean, Sweet Tooth Sam, the Candy Bandit and Isotope Feaney, The Meany.

VERY many years ago. Yes, and Captain Kangaroo! I remember
it all. Oh, how I miss Mr. Moose.

Rob P replied:
I believe my long term memory is just as bad as my short, but isn't that Tom Terrific and his wonder dog Fred? I keep thinking of Simon Bar Sinister as the rotten schemer in that cartoon, or am I mixing memories?
Simon Bar Sinister (who bears a striking resemblance to Rudy Guiliani) was the nemesis of Underdog.
Tom Terrific's resident bad-guy was Crabby Appleton. ~marty

DJ Useo replied:
What a welcome picture to see. I know the answer is Mighty Manfred, The Wonder Dog, from the Tom Terrific cartoon.
My Mom apparently regarded the television as my baby-sitter, as she always stuck me in front of it just as the Captain Kangaroo show came on.
My slight memories of Tom Terrific were favorable, but distant, so a couple months back I looked some of the episodes up on the You of Tubes.
Both me and the Missus thought they were funny.

Mighty Manfred the Wonder Dog ~ From the cartoon 'Tom Terrific' on the original "Captain Kangaroo Show". It was about a man that could change into whatever he wanted to. Along with Mighty Dog Manfred they fought villains.
Dale of Diamondy Spring, Nowatercali, responded:
Why that's Tom Terrific 's dog, Manfred. Tom's funnel hat was the giveaway. I vaguely remember the cartoon because it was on Captain Kangaroo. I didn't watch the Captain, it came on when I was in 1st grade and I was way into Popeye by that time.
Alan J answered:
Manfred, the Wonder Dog.

"Tom Terrific's Dog"... Damn'd if'n I remember exactly other than it was some kinda dagnab 'Wonder Dog' (not to be confused with "Under-Dog", mind you now)...

Having an unusual personality structure could be the secret to making other people laugh, scientists said on Thursday after research showed that comedians have high levels of psychotic personality traits.
In a study in the British Journal of Psychiatry, researchers analyzed comedians from Australia, Britain and the United States and found they scored significantly higher on four types of psychotic characteristics compared to a control group of people who had non-creative jobs.
The traits included a tendency towards impulsive or anti-social behavior, and a tendency to avoid intimacy.
"The creative elements needed to produce humor are strikingly similar to those characterizing the cognitive style of people with psychosis - both schizophrenia and bipolar disorder," said Gordon Claridge of the University of Oxford's department of experimental psychology, who led the study.
Although the traits in question are known as "psychotic", Claridge said, they can also represent healthy equivalents of features such as moodiness, social introversion and the tendency to lateral thinking.
New York City agreed Wednesday to pay $18 million to settle a civil rights claim from 1,800 people who were detained during mass demonstrations against the 2004 Republican party convention.
Police conducted massive sweeps ahead of the event at which George W. Bush was nominated for a second term as US president a year after starting the controversial war in Iraq.
A carefully-worded joint statement released to the media stopped short of blaming either side for what happened despite nine years of protracted legal wranglings to settle the dispute.
Pending approval from US district judge Richard Sullivan, the settlement will award $10.4 million to individual plaintiffs and to class members, and $7.6 million in lawyers' fees.
The vast majority of those held in the dramatic events outside the convention faced minor charges, such as parading without a permit or disorderly conduct, and were later dropped.
Hillary Clinton won't be on the ballot in 2014, but Republicans are wasting no time in laying the groundwork for a prolonged attack on her and other prominent Democrats with presidential ambitions.
With nearly three years before Election Day 2016, the Republican National Committee is investing in a campaign to ensure that the reputation of high-profile Democrats are "tarnished," a party official bluntly told reporters during a briefing in the group's Capitol Hill headquarters on Wednesday. Clinton and Vice President Joseph Biden will hold the primary focus, but other potential presidential hopefuls such as Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley and Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper won't escape their radar.
"Tearing down those brands is important to us," the RNC official said.
To accomplish this, the RNC is building opposition research files on each potential candidate and making preparations to bracket their travel with GOP talking points by dispatching its nationwide network of 14,000 Republican surrogates.

A lawsuit over the payout of a $17.5 million policy related to Michael Jackson's planned comeback concerts has been settled, attorneys told a judge on Wednesday.
Lawyers for Certain Underwriters at Lloyd's of London and for Jackson's estate announced the settlement before a hearing that would have altered what evidence could be presented at trial.
Howard Weitzman, an attorney for Jackson's estate, and Paul K. Shrieffer, who represented Lloyd's, said both sides were pleased the case was resolved. Weitzman said.terms were confidential.
The case, if it had gone to trial, would have put the focus once again on Jackson's health in the weeks and months before he died. A trial had been scheduled for Feb. 24.
Archaeologists in Egypt believe they have discovered the remains of a previously unknown pharaoh who reigned more than 3,600 years ago.
The skeleton of King Senebkay were uncovered at South Abydos in Sohag province, about 500 km (300 miles) south of Cairo, by a University of Pennsylvania expedition working with the government, the Egyptian antiquities ministry said.
Never before heard of in ancient Egyptian history, King Senebkay's name was found inscribed in hieroglyphics written inside a royal cartouche - an oval with a horizontal line at one end signaling a royal name, the ministry said in a statement.
The statement dates King Senebkay's rule to 1650 BC during a time known as the second intermediate period when central authority collapsed and small kingdoms sprung up between the end of the Middle Kingdom and the start of the New Kingdom.

The next time you see birds flying in a V, consider this: A new study says they choreograph the flapping of their wings with exquisite precision to help them on their way.
That's what scientists concluded after tracking a group of large black birds - each equipped with a tiny GPS device - that had been trained to follow an ultralight aircraft. One expert in animal flight said just gathering the data, which included every wing flap, was a remarkable accomplishment.
Scientists have long theorized that many birds like these rare northern bald ibises adopt a V formation for aerodynamic reasons.
When a bird flies, it leaves a wake. The idea is that another bird can get a boost from an updraft of air in that wake by flying behind the first bird and off to the side. When a bunch of birds use this trick, they form a V.
It's been difficult to study this in the wild, but researchers from the University of London's Royal Veterinary College and elsewhere met that challenge by partnering with a conservation program that is trying to reintroduce the endangered wading bird in Europe.
For about a decade, the program has hand-reared ibises from zoos and taught them their migration route by leading the way with a piloted ultralight craft. Normally, the leader of a V-formation would be a parent bird.
