"Slap her": children's reactions (YouTube)
"A media group in Italy recruited a few young boys for a video project, but the real purpose of the video was not explained to them beforehand. Watch as they take direction up to a point. When the director asks them to slap a girl, all bets are off. The result is a thought-provoking PSA about domestic violence." - Neatorama
Mark Morford: You and your wretched cartoon god (SF Gate)
I can only bow to the late, acerbically great Chris Hitchens, who beat me (and most everyone else) to this point, the one about mocking religions, nearly 10 years ago and in a far more hyper-articulate, ferociously jaundiced manner, as was his way.
Mark Morford: The shocking horror of free community college (SF Gate)
Do you know the estimated cost to the federal government for Obama's unexpected, sort of amazing, not even all that radical plan to send any qualified American (read: lower-income and the underprivileged, because that's who this program would benefit most, unquestionably) to two years of community college, for free?
Sympathy for the Devil: Four Decades of Friendship with Gore Vidal By MICHAEL MEWSHAW: Reviewed by Katherine A. Powers (Barnes and Noble)
No one would call Gore Vidal a big old sweetie pie, but some people who knew him were aware that this most acerbic of wits and nettlesome of contrarians could be generous and kind. One such is Michael Mewshaw, a freelance journalist and novelist, whose Sympathy for the Devil: Four Decades of Friendship with Gore Vidal purports to be what its title suggests: a memoir of friendship, and it is that, I guess, in the sense that Mewshaw occupied the position of friend.
A Conversation with Gavin Edwards: "Patton Oswalt: Laughter in the Dark" (Barnes and Noble)
"I even made a girl I'd been going out with for six years walk to her car by herself at two o'clock in the morning because I was in the middle of an all-night horror-thon at the Cinerama Dome." Patton Oswalt's new addiction memoir isn't centered on booze or heroin - his drug of choice was old movies.
"Baby Elephant Walk" is a piece of music written in 1961 by composer Henry Mancini, for the 1962 release of the movie Hatari! The composer combines brass instruments (including repeated blasts from the tuba) and woodwind elements to convey the sense of a toddler that is large and plodding, but nonetheless filled with the exuberance of youth. The catchy, jazzy simplicity of the tune has made it one of Mancini's most popular works, prompting its appearance on nearly twenty later compilation and best of/greatest hits albums. As the allmusic.com album review states, "if Hatari! is memorable for anything, it's for the incredibly goofy 'Baby Elephant Walk,' which has gone on to be musical shorthand for kookiness of any stripe. Get this tune in your head and it sticks." Hal David composed lyrics to Mancini's tune, which appear in the printed sheet music but were never used. In 1962, the song earned Mancini a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement.

Eet iz ze "Baby Elephant Walk", no?
I used to play the upright string bass in pit orchestras for musicals.
One of my favorite silly pranks was to play that Mancini tune if someone was walking across the stage alone. Haha!
Ok, it was juvenile, but it was better than my other prank of leaving on the stage
those little white twisted papers that "POP" when you throw them.
Everyone would laugh every time someone stepped on them, & was surprised. ROFL.

As you all know the untimely passing of Terry was unexpected, even by

By nature, wolverines are solitary creatures. But one member of the species is taking solitude to a whole new level as the sole wolverine living in California.
A trail camera in the Tahoe National Forest captured images of the wolverine in November, showing the same male thought to have first been spotted in the state in 2008.
Wolverines, the largest land-dwelling member of the weasel family, once roamed California's Sierra Nevada range, but indiscriminate poisoning and fur trapping in the early 1900s wiped the species off the state map. The 2008 sighting was the first since 1922, when a trapper killed one.
California Department of Fish and Wildlife biologist Chris Stermer said the wolverine spotted Nov. 3 was most likely the same one recorded in 2008, and genetic testing shows that it originated from a Rocky Mountains population in the Sawtooth Range in Idaho.

Sea level rise in the past two decades has accelerated faster than previously thought in a sign of climate change threatening coasts from Florida to Bangladesh, a study said on Wednesday.
The report, reassessing records from more than 600 tidal gauges, found that readings from 1901-90 had over-estimated the rise in sea levels. Based on revised figures for those years, the acceleration since then was greater than so far assumed.
The report said the earlier readings were incomplete or skewed by local factors such as subsidence.
The new analysis "suggests that the acceleration in the past two decades is 25 percent higher than previously thought," Carling Hay, a Canadian scientist at Harvard University and lead author of the study in the journal Nature, told Reuters.
Pope Francis became the second pope to visit a Buddhist temple on Wednesday, changing his schedule at the last minute to pay his respects at an important place of worship in Sri Lanka's capital and to witness a key ritual for Buddhists: the opening of a casket of relics of two important disciples of the Buddha.
Francis listened respectfully as Buddhist monks chanted and prayed while opening the stupa, or casket, containing relics in the Agrashravaka Temple, the Vatican said.
Usually, the relics are only put on display once a year, and Buddhists from around Sri Lanka line up for days to pay homage to them since it is such a rare privilege.
The head monk at the temple, Banagala Upatissa, told The Associated Press that allowing the pope to witness the relics "is the highest honor and respect we can offer to his holiness."
Upatissa had invited Francis to visit the temple when he greeted him at Colombo's airport on Tuesday, the Vatican said. Upatissa, who heads the Mahabodhi Society Headquarters, an important Buddhist organization, is active in interfaith dialogue and visited the Vatican during Pope Benedict XVI's papacy; a photo of the two men is in one of the Mahabodi reception rooms.

Area 51 is a top-secret U.S. research facility that gets mentioned all the time in alien movies. While we're still very far from getting any real proof that alien life is actually being studied at the location, which was confirmed as a U.S. secret facility in 2013 by the CIA. But an answer to a much simpler question has been provided by Today I Found Out: Why is it called Area 51?
The reason might be more boring than you think. The entire area in the southern Nevada desert has been used by military for advanced training and tests, including atomic bomb detonations during the Cold War, as it offered perfect conditions for such tests.
"In addition to isolation, the 3.5 million acre region around and including Area 51 boasts other qualities that make it an excellent place to conduct secret tests and training," Today I Found Out writes. "The dry climate provides superior flying conditions, the variety of terrain helps with gunnery practice, and several dry lake beds are available for emergency landings, including, notably, Groom Lake - situated just north of Area 51."
To keep track of the various test locations for nuclear explosions, the government started numbering sites using the word "Area" and a number. The locations were numbered in an apparently random order, with the Atomic Energy Commission personnel initially assigning numbers for identification purposes.
Controversial French comedian Dieudonne was arrested Wednesday and will stand trial over a Facebook comment suggesting he sympathised with one of the Paris attackers, as France cracks down on those who condone terrorism.
The arrest was one of 54 cases for "condoning terrorism" or "making threats to carry out terrorist acts" opened since Islamist gunmen last week killed 17 people in a three-day shooting spree that targeted the satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo, police and a Jewish supermarket.
In the midst of a mounting debate on the limits of free speech, prosecutors started a case against the comedian Monday after he posted a message on Facebook saying: "Tonight, as far as I'm concerned, I feel like Charlie Coulibaly".
The message was a mix of the catch-cry "Je suis Charlie" used in global tributes to the slain magazine journalists and the name of one of the gunmen, Amedy Coulibaly, who shot dead four Jews at the supermarket on Friday and a policewoman the day before.
Dieudonne is a controversial figure who has often made headlines, most notably with his trademark "quenelle" hand gesture that looks like an inverted Nazi salute, but which he insists is merely anti-establishment.
Bulgarians perform ancient Surva ritual in the village of Gabrovdol, some 60 km ( 37 miles) south of the capital Sofia, late Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2015. The authentic pagan festival called Surva is held every year on 13th and 14th of January in western part of Bulgaria to mark the New Year. Surva is performed by costumed men, some in sheepskin, or other colorful garments, bells and masks, who walk around and dance to scare away the evil spirits, in hope to provide a good harvest, health, fertility, and happiness.

Financial problems plaguing Caesars Entertainment and its casino empire have the company considering a trip to bankruptcy court, possibly as early as Thursday.
If all goes according to the company's plan, drawn up with its most senior creditors, it should be business as usual for customers - its doors will remain open, the slot machines will still sing, chips will rest atop tables.
U.S. casino-hotel companies are dependent on extra cash in a person's pocket, but perhaps none more than Caesars, which waded into the recent economic downturn already burdened by more debt than any of them - a by-product of a buyout in January 2008 that was largely a wager using other people's money.
While competitors found fortune in Asia's casino growth as stateside gambling in Las Vegas and Atlantic City waned, Caesars missed out. And as other companies built arenas and shopping districts on the Strip or casino-hotels in newer gambling markets across the country, analysts say Caesars was reluctant to spend.
It went private, then public again to raise cash and created new related companies, shifting its properties from one to another to free them up from the debt cordoned off in one spot, its Caesars Entertainment Operating Co. That's the company now headed to bankruptcy court.

A court in the Dominican Republic has ordered the arrest of three prosecutors and 21 police officers accused of not reporting drug seizures involving more than a ton of cocaine that has since disappeared.
Among those accused is the former director of an anti-narcotics unit, who is among the dozen of suspects that have been arrested. Authorities are still seeking to arrest the remainder.
One of the three drug seizures occurred in September near Santo Domingo, where 950 kilograms (2,000 pounds) of cocaine were discovered but never turned over to authorities, he said.
The investigation began in December after Police Chief Manuel Castro noticed the missing drugs.

Tanzania has banned witch doctors in a bid to curb a rising wave of attacks and murders of albinos whose body parts are prized for witchcraft after a four-year-old albino girl was kidnapped from her home by an armed gang.
More than 70 albinos, who lack pigment in their skin, hair and eyes, have been murdered in the east African nation in the past decade for black magic purposes, according to United Nations figures, many hacked to death and body parts removed.
The government has accused witch doctors of fuelling these killings by luring people to bring albino body parts which they grind up with herbs, roots and sea water to make charms and spells that they claim bring good luck and wealth.
The nationwide ban come less than a week after U.N. officials urged the government to step up efforts to end the discrimination and attacks after a girl was abducted last month from her home in northern Mwanza region. She is still missing.
