• Even as a young boy, Rudolf Nureyev loved dancing. One of his report cards included a notation by a teacher who stated that young Rudolf “jumps like a frog and that’s about all he knows. He even dances on the staircase landings.”
• As a very young dance pupil — 14 years old — Margot Fonteyn (then known as Margaret Hookham) showed much ambition. When she was told that Ms. Anna Pavlova was the greatest dancer in the world, she replied, “Then I will be the second greatest.”
• When Anna Pavlova was eight years old, her mother took her for the first time to the ballet, saying, “You are going to see the country of the fairies.” Her mother spoke truly — the ballet was Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty.
• When Elise, ballerina Maria Tallchief’s daughter, was very young, she wrote a poem that began, “Because she is my mother, / every night she turns into Cinderella.”
Choreographing
• Felia Doubrovska taught at George Balanchine’s School of American Ballet for 30 years, and before that she danced in many of his works. Mr. Balanchine, of course, often fell in love with muses, who inspired him to create some of his masterpieces for them. He also often made his muses either his wives or his girlfriends, and many of them — Tamara Geva, Alexandra Danilova, Vera Zorina, Maria Tallchief, and Tanaquil Le Clercq — became famous. Ms. Doubrovska remained simply friends with Mr. Balanchine, who told her, “Our relationship is so nice, the way we can look each other in the eyes. My girlfriends and wives I try to forget.” Ms. Doubrovska half-joked that she was a “little sad” that she had not been one of his girlfriends or wives “because then I would be famous.”
• George Balanchine choreographed many ballets for the New York City Ballet. Other companies tried to perform his ballets, but they weren’t as successful as his own company; however, this didn’t bother Mr. Balanchine. He once explained that he loved to play the piano, although he played it badly. When he tried to play difficult compositions such as Brahms’ Second Piano Concerto, he loved playing them, although he performed them badly. And so, Mr. Balanchine explained, “That’s why I understand those other companies when they dance my ballets. They do them badly, but they love them. Let them enjoy themselves!”
• Thommie Walsh is the dancer whose pose with crossed arms appeared in posters for A Chorus Line. According to Mr. Walsh, the pose came from being bored in rehearsals and waiting for choreographer Michael Bennett to create dances. However, after Mr. Walsh became a choreographer, he realized how horrible his body language had been, and he telephoned Mr. Bennett to apologize, saying, “I know now what it’s like, with ten or twelve dancers standing around, waiting for me to come up with the steps, the idea, to move it, to shake it. I know what it must have been like with me standing there with my arms crossed.”
• Robert Gottlieb disliked John Cranko’s Eugene Onegin in part because of what he called “its patched-together Tchaikovsky score” — so did George Balanchine. Mr. Cranko had died young of a heart attack, but Mr. Balanchine told Mr. Gottlieb that he had died because of a different reason: “Tchaikovsky up in heaven looked down and saw that ballet and went to God and said, ‘Get that one!’” Of course, Mr. Balanchine was well aware of his place in history as a great choreographer, and when someone once asked him his opinion of the other choreographers, he answered, “And who are the other choreographers?”
• Sergei Diaghilev motivated his choreographers by telling them, “Astonish me!” They responded by astonishing the world. On May 19, 1912, when Vaslav Nijinsky’s Afternoon of a Faun (L’Après-Midi d’un Faune) premiered, it was a seminal, groundbreaking event. At first, the audience did not know what to make of it, and some boos and catcalls were heard as the ballet ended. However, Mr. Diaghilev ordered the ballet to be encored, and this time when the ballet ended, the audience responded with a great ovation.

In 1971, what song provided Cher with her first solo number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100, her first music video, and her first Grammy Award nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance?
"Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves" is a song by American singer and actress Cher for her seventh solo studio album Chér (eventually reissued under the title Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves) (1971). It was released on September 1, 1971, by Kapp Records as the album's lead single. The song was written by Bob Stone, and produced by Snuff Garrett. Since Sonny Bono's first attempts at reviving Cher's recording career had been unsuccessful, Kapp Records recruited Garrett as her producer and he chose Stone to write a song specifically for Cher, in order to cater more to an adult audience.
Critically, "Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves" has been met with appreciation ever since its release. It earned Cher her first Grammy Award nomination in the Best Female Pop Vocal Performance category. Commercially, it became her first solo number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100 and on the Canadian Singles Chart, while reaching the top five in Australia, Ireland, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. It was the first single by a solo artist to rank number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart at the same time as on the Canadian Singles Chart. It was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America for shipment of one million copies across the United States. At the time of its release, "Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves" was the biggest-selling single in the history of MCA Records.
Along with the parent album, the track has been considered a turning point in Cher's career, with critics starting to acknowledge her as an artist and credited the song for restoring her popularity, which had diminished at the end of the 1960s. Billboard magazine retrospectively called it "one of the 20th century's greatest songs".
The video for "Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves" was Cher's first music video. The video was a recorded performance of the song on The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour in 1971. Throughout the video Cher is singing in front of a house wagon and in front of a fire. A second video was made, but it was very similar to the original. In the second video, clips of dancing female gypsies were shown.

Hollywood legend Dick Van Dyke and folk icon Joan Baez are among those receiving this year's Kennedy Center Honors, one of America's most prestigious arts awards, which will be distributed at a scaled-back event reimagined due to the pandemic.
Choreographer and actress Debbie Allen, country singer-songwriter Garth Brooks and violinist Midori round out the 43rd class of honorees.
The Kennedy Center -- Washington's performing arts complex that serves as a living monument to slain president John F. Kennedy -- was forced to twice postpone its night of red-carpet glitz traditionally held in December due to the coronavirus.
Instead of a single gala, a series of small in-person events with socially distant audiences and virtual tributes is now slated for May 17-22. The honorees will receive their medals during that week.
It will mark a new era following four years of Donald Trump (R-Lock Him Up) -- a man despised by many cultural and entertainment figures -- who never attended the honors, normally held in the presence of the president.
Jeopardy! has unveiled a number of new names set to guest host the trivia series. On Wednesday executive producer Mike Richards revealed that CBS journalist Bill Whitaker and Mayim Bialik will take their turn running the long-running trivia game. The EP also confirmed that Katie Couric and Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers will guest host.
The Los Angeles times reported that Couric will join the trivia game show, while Rodgers revealed that he would guest host during a Tuesday interview on SiriusXM. Rodgers competed in — and won — a celebrity edition of Jeopardy! in 2015.
As part of each host’s time on the show, Jeopardy! will make a donation to a charity of their choice. The amount donated will equal the cumulative winnings of the contestants that compete during the weeks they serve as guest host.
Additional guest hosts will be announced later in the season.
Tom Hanks is set to host a primetime TV special celebrating the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden and featuring performances from Justin Timberlake, Demi Lovato, Jon Bon Jovi, and Ant Clemons.
The special, titled “Celebrating America”, will run for 90 minutes and will be broadcast live on ABC, CBS, CNN, NBC, and MSNBC from 8:30–10:00 PM ET/PT on 20 January.
Viewers can also stream the special live on YouTube, Facebook, Twitch, Twitter, Amazon Prime Video, Microsoft Bing, NewsNOW from Fox, and AT&T DirectTV and U-verse.
Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris' swearing-in will take place on Wednesday, 20 January at 12:00 PM ET on the Capitol steps. For safety reasons, Washington, DC mayor Muriel Bowser has encouraged people not to travel to the nation's capitol and instead watch the inauguration virtually.
Additionally, the Biden team has organised a series of virtual events leading up to the inauguration. A fundraiser called "Conversations with Actors from The West Wing, Scandal, and Designated Survivor” is scheduled for 15 January and will bring together actors such as Scandal's Bellamy Young and The West Wing's Bradley Whitford, Richard Schiff, Dulé Hill, and Janel Moloney in a conversation to be moderated by Designated Survivor actor (and Obama administration alum) Kal Penn.
A Tennessee state lawmaker has introduced a bill that would add a statue of Dolly Parton to the Capitol grounds in Nashville.
Representative John Mark Windle, a Democrat representing Fentress, Morgan and Overton counties, introduced House Bill 135 Tuesday, aimed at honoring the country legend.
The bill states “the state capitol commission, at regularly scheduled meetings, shall develop and implement a plan for the commissioning of a statue of Dolly Parton, to recognize her for all that she has contributed to this state.”
Windle said the statue would be located on the Capitol grounds, facing in the direction of Ryman Auditorium.
The bill states an account would be created within the state general fund, known as the Dolly Parton Fund, for the design, construction and installation of the statue. The fund would be financed by gifts, grands and other donations received by the state for the fund from non-state sources.
Toby Keith helped see Donald J. Trump (R-Lock Him Up) in as president, playing at the inauguration concert four years ago — and he came back to help see him out, too, news reports indicate.
It’s being reported that both Keith and fellow country music star Ricky Skaggs were at the White House Wednesday afternoon to receive the National Medal of the Arts, nearly at the same time the outgoing president was being impeached by the House of Representatives for a historic second time.
Media representatives were not invited to the ceremony, and there was no prior announcement of Keith and Skaggs getting awarded with the medals.
In accepting the honor while the president was experiencing what many would consider his greatest moment of shame, Skaggs and Keith were willing to go where Bill Belichick would not. The New England Patriots’ coach, who had supported Trump in the past, turned down the chance to receive the Presidential Medal of the Arts this week.
A Los Angeles-based real estate investor has purchased the six-bedroom South Florida home that belonged to the late teen idol David Cassidy, and hopes to give it a fresh look on television.
Amy L. Raff and her husband, Abe Rotchel told the South Florida SunSentinel they weren't looking to buy Cassidy's waterfront home when they started looking at listings in Fort Lauderdale.
“It turned out to just be a nice benefit that it used to be his house,” Raff told the newspaper. “It’s a fabulous home in a great location.”
The house was sold at an auction for about $2 million to investors from Maryland. They rented it out, complete with Cassidy memorabilia on display, for short-term vacations, the newspaper reported. In 2018, it was listed for sale for $3.9 million.
Raff said they plan extensive renovations to modernize the interior and the outside pool and patio area. They plan to move to the area by the end of summer to oversee the project, which Raff hopes will be chronicled on a home makeover-type TV program.
Archaeologists have discovered the world's oldest known animal cave painting in Indonesia - a wild pig - believed to be drawn 45,500 years ago.
Painted using dark red ochre pigment, the life-sized picture of the Sulawesi warty pig appears to be part of a narrative scene.
The picture was found in the Leang Tedongnge cave in a remote valley on the island of Sulawesi.
The report says that the painting, which measures 136cm by 54cm (53in by 21in), depicts a pig with horn-like facial warts characteristic of adult males of the species.
There are two hand prints above the back of the pig, which also appears to be facing two other pigs that are only partially preserved.
One of North America’s most famous ancient predators—and a favorite of Game of Thrones fans—emerged as mysteriously as it disappeared. Dire wolves, which died out with mammoths and saber-toothed cats at the end of the last ice age, were long thought to be close cousins of gray wolves. Now, the first analysis of dire wolf DNA finds they instead traveled a lonely evolutionary path: They are so different from other wolves, coyotes, and dogs that they don’t belong in the genus that includes these animals. Instead, researchers argue, they need an entirely new scientific classification.
Archaeologists know dire wolves lived in North America from about 250,000 to 13,000 years ago. They were about 20% bigger than today’s gray wolves—the size of their skeletons often gives them away—and, like other wolves, they probably traveled in packs, hunting down bison, ancient horses, and perhaps even small mammoths and mastodons. Many followed their prey into the sticky asphalt of what are now Los Angeles’s La Brea Tar Pits, where they were trapped for the ages. Hundreds of dire wolf skulls line the walls of the California museum.
But that’s where most knowledge stops. Because the skeletons of dire wolves are similar to those of gray wolves, the two animals were considered closely related. Scientists have long classified dire wolves as Canis dirus, putting them in the same genus as gray wolves, coyotes, and dogs. But the one thing that could have sealed the deal—dire wolf DNA—had been broken down by the tar of the pits.
In the new study, researchers scoured North America trying to extract genetic samples from dozens of dire wolf remains at universities and museums. They recovered about one-quarter of the nuclear genome and the full mitochondrial DNA across five individuals, ranging in age from about 13,000 to more than 50,000 years old.
The genetic material revealed a new evolutionary family tree, and a surprise: Dire wolves occupy their own lineage, separate from those that gave rise to African jackals, gray wolves, coyotes, and dogs by nearly 6 million years, the team reports today in Nature. “Even though they look like wolves, dire wolves actually have nothing to do with wolves,” says Angela Perri, a zooarchaeologist at Durham University and one of the study’s lead authors.
